Wanted to get a thread going about calendar megadungeons. Some blogger made a thing about it a couple years ago but it's existed for much longer.

The premise is simple: You write a dungeon room every day. Each month of rooms make up a floor of your dungeon. Never skip a day, but you can go back and edit as much as you want.

Why? Writing everyday is good for you. Helps you stay creative and exercise your brain. Also, this is deceptively challenging. If you've written a lot of dungeons or mega-dungeons before, you may find that this forces you to stretch some creative muscles you'd forgotten about. If you've never written a mega-dungeon before because you found it too daunting, this breaks it up into little bite sized chunks.

Some variations that people seem to like:

Each week's rooms are a cluster and directly tie into each other. Layout can be whatever you want.

Draw your rooms directly on a calendar so that the rooms vaguely fill the space (see pic).

Write a room 6 days a week and then use the 7th to design a unique monster, faction, or artifact that ties into the cluster or one of the rooms you wrote that week.

Had a couple people ask me what the "themes" of my dungeon are and I'm not sure what they want to hear. Is it like an English lit question? Themes like the cycle of hubris, regret, and self-deception or the folly of pride? Or do they want to hear about the ice labyrinth?
>>
>>97707347
Not entirely sure but probably both the concepts as story elements or compelling background and physical characteristic.
>Ice labyrinth themes
>isolation, puzzles, stasis, thaw
>opaque walls, stalactites and stalagmites with frozen captives in them, ice flow river
I tend to use it as a cluster of ideas to keep in mind when brainstorming or keying rooms. Doesn't have to be complex or high concept, last one I had was
>ziggurats, swamp decay, raid
>underwater caverns, surface temples, cult wars

A skyscraper megadungeon can work, especially if you take into account that multiple different firms utilize different floors and parts of floors, and the scumminess of a cyberpunk world can mean that stairwells and elevators are limited in where they go, noise isolation between floors (to prevent bugging and corporate espionage) keeps fighting noise from being noticed, and security services are per-firm, contracted with very limited scopes. There's all your contrivances for why some dickheads shooting up floor 3 doesn't put the whole building on lockdown - the building is more of a necessary evil of space savings with different "commerce tribes" using it for their operations, not some kind of unified hive.

Or you could do things like having giant, mostly-horizontal (+/- 5 floors up and down from ground at most) sprawling "abandoned" complex that was originally some sort of megamall or manufactory and has been repurposed by different gangs, squatters, hermits, and other social misfits. Think like, urbex youtube channels in derelict high tech buildings but "shored up" instead of being full of black mold. There's a little more room for parlay in that sort of thing too since not everyone will be necessarily hostile, or hates their neighbors more than outsiders.

>what are themes
fucking retards

Are you too stupid to understand basic analysis or did you write a brain dead series of rooms?

>Is "Ice Labyrinth" a theme?
jesus christ
>>
>>97709385
I don't know man, if I asked somebody to tell me about their mega dungeon, I think "one level is an ice labyrinth" is more useful/descriptive than "it's about the cycle of hubris, regret, and self-deception".

But this hobby has a fucking mountain of fart-huggers so who knows

Flower knight's getting a combo armor set with slenderman that's apparently cursed in COD. I'm on my first campaign with flower knight and I also wish it had armor, it's thrown in a weird gap for me where I like to have different armor on every survivor but in this campaign I only have gorment, Rawhide, and leather available early so I'm gonna have to double leather so I can farm Phoenix and DBK safely

Guess im going to have to find slenderman somewhere. Still missing slender, gorm, and man hunter.
>>
>>97709683
Yeah those are the most desired and most out of stock, over the new stuff even. Butcher is fine but gets a little dragged out and his level 3 is annoying, nobody likes king's man and slendermsn is the best replacement, and gorm is just a good fun quarry with unique armor and crafting mechanics and only a little bit of bullshit

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

Naw, this is faggot shit. The Christians, Muslims, and maybe Jews of Trench Crusade are good guys, sometimes extremely desperate good guys, fighting for creation to not further unravel and a right to exist in it.

Hell is fucking trying to impregnate people with fly aids babies and doing what Jews wish they could do with loans. On top of sending people burnt to a fucking crisp like an army of Major Toms after a botched re-entry.

They are
but the Hell folk have reasons as to why they do what they do as well. Not good reasons, but justifiable in their minds.
>>
>>97709395
Yeah I'm sure they do, just dude who thinks it's ok to rape women because they deserve it for being immoral (dressing in a skirt and tank top). They are objectively bad, though they may rationalize it in their head as them being "good". The thing is with TC and even ITT people argue that the conflict is nuanced and complex when it isn't at all. Hell is evil and heaven is good. Yes I'm sure sometimes a heretic does something actually good and a faithful person does something bad (though we have no lore on a heretic doing a good thing) the exception proves the rule. As I saw someone say a while a go: "Some of the faithful do bad stuff and it's usually out of desperation. The faithless/fallen all do bad stuff and they're the belligerents"

Various AD&D/OSR threads are full on cancer with autism shitfights and gay nonsense.

I am looking to run a megadungeon game for some people who never played anything older than 3.5. I've played some of them but it was a while back myself, and I've been mostly doing retroclones for the last little while.

So what I'm asking is to get some takes on AD&D, B/X, AD&D 2e, and BECMI.

Names: Rule Complication vs usefulness, ease of learning, strengths/weaknesses, and ease of acquiring physical copies of the book(s). I don't need any modules and minimizing splats is ideal, so if you feel like any of these "cannot be enjoyed" without X extra book(s) please include that information as well.

these grogs ultimately don't like D&D, they want to autistically consume it to satisfy their hyperfixations and need for structure, and get furious when they see that as under attack.
Any reasonable person (or even autistic people that don't have that form of it) can look at D&D and realize there's no true "right" way to play, only wrong ways for particular tables. Trying to force your vision upon a game as open and fluid as D&D will always fail because you have utterly 0 influence over someone elses table. You cannot compell them to run the game a certain way, and neither can they do so to you.

So this drama is ultimately a utter shame.
>>
>>97710336
If the system isn't the primary focus, why did you pick these 4 to choose from? The OP mentions retroclones, are you looking to improve some section of your experience or gain cred by running "cooler" old systems?
>>
>>97710186
I enjoyed BECMI enormously over the years (Played sicne 1982). Comparatively few options when played "as is". Race-as-class simplified a lot, although it did make halflings (sort of like a Thief but max level 8 without much compensation) and dwarves (Fighter maxing out at Lvl 12 instead of 36. Make what you will of that) ruleswise superflous.

AD&D suffered badly from poor structure of the books, but was, mainly and mostly, similar to BECMi but with lots more spells. A proper editor instead of booze and cocaine would have saved Gygax a lot of trouble.

AD&D2e was a nicely cleaned up version of AD&D with far more options, and even more spells.
Not bad at all if you want something with wider range in terms of classes and races and on-weapon proficiencies.

That being said, I have had fun anyway, with all of the above.
>>
>>97710509
I like race-as-class because I find races as stat boosts to really annoy me. I am a little displeased to hear BECMI makes dwarves and halflings feel less useful/relevant.

Would you say the addition of more spells make AD&D deeper or more interesting, or does it just increase Magic User/Cleric paperwork?
>>
>>97710524
I lean heavily towards making it more paperwork-heavy.
A lot of the spells did more-or-less the same things but with different names. Damage, mobilty enhancing/impeding, healing, scrying and so on.
Sure, types of damage (cold, fire et.c.) did play some role but neither me nor my players actually really found it made much difference. Why was Ice Storm a lvl 4 spell but Fireball Lvl 3 despite doing, essentially the same thing, that is to say cause damage over an area?

hmm, that makes me think, maybe I will just use the library 3d printer instead? It is one of those ones that is ass for models since everything not at right angels is made up of jaggedy lines, but that doesn't seem like as much of a problem for larger terrain pieces.
>>
>>97576097
What is a good system for platoon level ancients/medieval?

Like around 30 models per side, larger than squad actions of like 5-15, but smaller than army actions of like 50+? Basically the largest amount of men a single officer could command in detail. The smallest scale where you command groups of models instead of single models.

An important question to ask when determining if DLE games are for you is
'Do you enjoy campaigns that won't finish before you retire, and combats that run over several sessions (while your character is unconscious)?'
If so, stick with PF/DnD.
Otoh, if you like fast, dirty, deadly fights and campaigns that will be done by summer, then Demon Lord might work for you.

A campaign runs from level 0 to level 10.
There is no XP to track - the campaign structure is designed so that PCs level up after each adventure.
If you want to stretch it out you could vary this at your table, do two adventures per level, etc.
But I don't know why you would want to do that, there are so many character options, just do a new campaign with new PCs (or play something else).

Most of the modules are standalone, but there are some published campaign frames.
Of note, there is a official Freeport campaign, so if you have played Freeport before, you could play it again to get a before/after feel for how the Demon Lord engine affects play.

There are Chaos Orks and Orkish genestealers. They're not likely to pick up much from Necrons because they're ancient enemies. Tau are not common so the chance happening might not have ocurred- also orks think tau have sissy dakka so they're less inclined to emulate them.

Dunno about Eldar, Orks and Eldar have a common origin so you'd think there'd be more cross pollination. You don't hear that much about Orks and Eldar fighting in general, really. Maybe they just kind of have a built in racial understanding.
>>
>>97707026
40k is not a well worldbuilt setting where factions interact with each other organically and logically
the imperium is the setting, everyone else is a satellite of the imperium and so interacts almost exclusively with the imperium, not with the rest

if you want a pseudo realistic explanation, it's because humans are the dominant power of the galaxy so there are enough interactions for the outlying imperiaboos to become numerous enough
or simply because all other factions are not orky enough, while humans are orky enough if you squint a bit
>>
>>97707026
If you squint hard enough the Evil Sunz and their related Kult of Speed have certain similarities with the Eldar.
The ES use vehicles to get their boyz into position and provide heavy support but, being Orkz, get a bit too enthusiastic about the fighting to do the tactical repositioning part.
The KoS are the fast attack elements, such as the Saim Hann Wild Riders and other jetbike users, but again with the Orkish habit of getting into close combat rather than using hit and run tactics.

its partially because the series is human-centric by design and everything that happens is based on how much it affects humanity specifically
things like eldar vs necron or tau vs chaos are either just interesting footnotes (its a continuation of the war on heaven, so its worth a mention) or are used in relation to how it affects the empire (imperium having a laugh at the taus feeble attempts to achieve diplomacy with chaos)

back after the fight
objective of the map was to kill the boss, he wall jumped up to it and force caged himself in with it, while we cleaned up all the adds (no reinforcements)
he basically took no damage due to hide looping + the boss just having not enough options to deal with him, but by the time we dealt with all the enemies, he only took 1 structure off the boss
DM ended up fiating that "okay you fought for like 6 more rounds and beat him" because no one wanted to sit and watch him chip away at the boss's hp for that long while no one else got to play
it was whatever. I was still frustrated because I would have actually dealt way more damage to it plus I didnt get my duel but it's whatever
if we actually had to sit and wait for him to chip the boss to death I may have just left the table
him forcecaging the boss shut off half of its shit though which ended up trivializing the encounter
I still don't like how he keeps trying to main character himself into stuff but it may just be a symptom of the atlas being incredibly "main-charactery" of a mech
I might say something to the DM. I just wish me or other players could have cool moments instead of him just jumping around the whole map and killing shit before we get to it.

Yesterday's HG session was pretty cool. We got to swat a bunch of GRELs riding hoverbikes.
Some pretty cinematic moments happened. (Duelist Mamba missed a GREL by a hair's length from his vibrokatana, only for said Grel to get popped to smithereens by another Gear's AC round).

Also it's neat to see how the various traits can give mechanical bonuses/maluses while supplying character flavor. I mean, it's cool on paper but better to see actually play out.

The DM also came up with a nice system where our squad + allies + enemies all move around on a huge sector map of the badlands, and depending on our sensor range we can spot (and be spotted) by others, decide on whether to spring ambushes etc. It also takes stuff like fuel into account.

For the next match we're finally going up against some Hovertanks, so the stakes will definitely be raised.

His current "nemesis" is Skeletron, an alien techomancer drawn to our Solar system by the strange energies of the flare that created Sundog in the first place. He can control technology and cobble scrap-metal together into "cyberzombies" that give Sundog the opportunity to cut loose without hurting anyone.

Awesome! I'm so glad that's coming across, because that's exactly my intention.

>holding a raisin or chocolate near him has the same effect as kryptonite on superman

You are a schizophrenic otherkin who eventually has to grow up. You live in the magical equivalent of the post-apocalypse.

In earlier editions there was a combination discipline with fortitude that made their claws extra long for more damage and the ability to cut through steel doors and concrete. Iirc the text also stated that their regular claws can only cut wood, but then again they never had problems cutting through steel armor, so who knows.

Trying to flatten everything into "One World of Darkness" after you hire a Nordic LARP Clique to cove the creative vision can't really be described any other way. Maximum blind 90s nostalgia, zero consideration for how to make it work (in a manner that wasn't just turning every game into a.very specific sub-section of Vampire).

Writing General: 'psychopomps' edition

Welcome to /wg/, the thread for all /tg/ related writing. Whether you're plotting your campaign, trying to come up with a character backstory, or just trying to write some setting fluff, this is the place to post it. You don't even have a campaign, just an idea you want to develop? You're welcome here. While the rest of /tg/ is arguing over monstergirl mating and which way rivers are supposed to flow, we're here to help you turn your thoughts into an actual finished product.

As the successor to the Storythreads, we're also open to /tg/ related fanfiction (D&D, Warhammer, Battletech, whatever). In fact, if you've written any vaguely /tg/-related short stories, you can try them out here. We also have flash-fiction challenges from time to time.

There's a discord for writers here
https://discord.gg/6AwKHGF

The previous thread can still be found in the archive here

And finally an archive of /tg/ fiction can be found here:
http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Storythread (dead link, but may be resurrected one day)
https://2d4chan.org/wiki/Storythread (page missing, wiki still up)

Death from the Seventh Seal present in my Mythic Bastionland campaign. I am yet to figure out how to utilize him.

The elven psychopomp appears as a full on skeleton in a robe, grim reaper style. He used to be trapped in a cycle of killing his mother (who is a daughter of the Leviathan, and sort of a mother of monsters figure) and becoming his father, the First of the Dead, but that cycle broke when hell overran the elves' old home. Now he guides the souls of dead elves to the moon, since the Land of the Newly Dead was flooded by the abyss.

He carries a silver blade given to him by the Lunar Queen, which is depicted varyingly as a scythe or a sword depending on context, and he carries the head of his father (who also looks like a skeleton, so it's just a skull) on his hip. The skull gives him weird advice sometimes, and is the combination of every iteration of his father from each iteration of the cycle, superimposed into a single being.

When the elves eventually reclaim their home, he will gain flesh, and take on a profile of rebirth

Oh man this is like one of my favorite topics.

My book series resolves almost entirely about death and the concept of it. Its was conceptualized by my personal fears regarding the subject, as a way to cope.
In the setting, Death is a character, arguably almost the main villain of the setting but its a bit more complicated. Everything regarding the demons and supernatural elements tie back to her in some way. Its part of the creation myth of the setting that the Gods went mad from being alive for untold eons until they made a pact with Death to be able to die.
Also, the main villains of the book are basically descendants of that Death god its a whole thing.

Currently in the story due to the actions of the protagonists, Death herself is currently locked away BY one of those descendants. This has lead to the world itself being thrown out of balance because nothing can die "properly". Human souls remain trapped in their dead bodies and they slowly begin to calcify and turn to salt-like crystaline structures in a horrific undeath. The MC by virtue of her super special powers is actually one of the few people capable of granting release from this hell.

Thats actually the main conflict of the current book in a way. Two of those descendants mentioned earlier all want to use her power to "fix" the world in their own way. One wants to use it to release Death and the other well... the other's a necromancer that believes Life to be sacred above all else and actively spits in the face of Death.

As a bit of a spoiler, the plan for the finale of the book IS for this MC to embrace the villain's plan and become a full blown psychopomp, at least for some time until the next book works to fix that. Due to the web of intrigue and political and emotional blackmail Ive crafted this is basically the only way for her to save those precious to her.

What are some good way to introduce a sense of sonder to adventures without risking derailing them.

I just like the idea of occasionally implying to players that there are other adventures going on simultaneously to their own that are just as interesting, complex, and important as the one their on. But that doesn’t involve them, and they may never fully know.

This probably isn't very helpful, but my favourite example of that is Shaun of the Dead, where they briefly pass another group with all the same archetypes but played by British celebrities who are more famous than the main actors.
