>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>How do I get started?

If your playing Sultanate like HL, you're doing it wrong. Heretics are about having a moderate number of well-equipped units who thrive on status effect and elemental negation. IS are about an asymmetric force of specialists with the cannon or the bull as an anchor for war band composition.

2. Pop open a time capsule à la Fallout 4, play human anyway with the superpowers of not having intergenerational trauma, enduring room temperature without special gear, and not be sexually attracted (and able to reproduce with) your gun.

I did experiment with rules for rolling an injury if someone went to 0 HP during a fight. Though I did limit it to a single roll once the battle was over, justified as the adrenaline preventing them from noticing the injury until afterwards.
That did require some tuning, like changing the lose an arm/leg results into just breaking an arm/leg. And it's something I haven't had the chance to really fine-tune. I'd likely want to add Con mod as a bonus to the roll, and possibly implement a penalty for each time they went down.

But it did ultimately accomplish the goal of making the players far more wary about going down to 0 and playing more cautiously as a result. Doing something similar with exhaustion would probably be less punishing, but still quite effective.

I wish the game had more enemies like the Giant Spider that basically countered 0 HP healing by themselves. There's more enemies that just outright kill a PC when reducing them to 0 compared to those that would just incapacitate a PC for 1 minute on reducing them to 0.

it's a light game. not as elegant as knizias, but only a bit harder to teach.
you go fast by matching a bunch of symbols together from up to three cards from your hand, plus one from a shared crowd card. there are a number of suits with abilities like cornering, healing, and attacking. whenever you take an action in a suit you advance its skill marker. depending on the crowd's whims you have opportunities to advance the skill marker double. once the skill markers start landing in the bonus zones, your speed when you take those moves gets much much stronger. it turns a game of simple hand optimization into constant tough value judgements of when to prioritize upgrades over your current position.
there's not a ton of player interaction, but the mind games around when to shield from attacks and using whips to maximum effect based on position do enough for me
very timeless vibe and plenty thematic for my tastes

Yes, and when what 3e and on calls "sorcerer" was introduced as a channeler in Player's Option: Spells and Magic. Except that they were a Con caster instead of a Charisma one, since it was linked to a fatigue system.

It didn't help that Sorcerers (and other spontaneous casters) were screwed over by the metamagic system and the Wizard got bonus metamagic/item creation feats.

Huh. That's funny. You'd think that the rotation would almost force you to adapt a bit. Me, I don't chase the meta, I just have fun with whatever they put out, even if it means I don't win much. Not trying to be snooty or anything, it just sounds like we enjoy the game differently.
>>
>>97834922
I played a few games of Altered and I liked it for the most part, it had interesting decision trees going on. If anything maybe the problem with gameplay was just how much you had to see every turn (cards to put into the mana zone, what to keep in the reserve, lane to play your cards, bunch of tokens to manage, three stats on each card to keep track of)

It just had some really stupid concepts like the uniques or the QR codes uglying up the designs

Also didn't really like how the character design felt straight out of 2010s Tumblr
>>
>>97835132
Well yes, rotation killed all the prior meta decks. But the same decks have been played with minor adjustments in all three sets so far - blurple, dogs, purple/Steel, and Blue/Green control being the top decks in each format.

It depends a lot on what games you play and how much. A gaming PC might have a big upfront cost, but the successive costs are very different if you buy an AAA game every month or if you proceed spending 5000 hours in LoL
>>
>>97835499
It depends on what you compare it to. Compared to hiking it's an expensive hobby. Compared to sailing it's dirt cheap.
There's also obviously a bit of a humble brag in saying it's cheap.
And also that there are different markets for it. For me as a yuro €150 is not a big deal, but it starts to inch into something I might think twice before buying. For an american $200 probably doesn't even register as money, it's like having a few beers with the lads for me.
>>
>>97835554
>For an american $200 probably doesn't even register as money
ooooo brother, you do not know how bad things are in teh US in terms of economy for the average 20-40 year old do you?
Most people in the US cant even cover a 500 dollar emergency.
Most people are living pay check to pay check in the US.

200 dollars for the vast majority of the US is a very large chunk of money to consider dropping on plastic toy men.
>>
>>97835548
>For example, if you drop like 3k on a new PC and your intent is only to play older games?
You do not need a 3k PC to only play older games though.
>>
>>97835514
>yes I picked 280% because thats what GW did
Something to keep in mind with this is that it's almost as cheap to make an army out of OOP minis, if it's for a popular faction, as it is to use new models. That's almost unheard of, especially when the OOP ones are made of more expensive materials sometimes.
If people were more rational, GW would be competing with their own secondary market, except they already do rules churn to get people buying models for "finished" armies.
>>97835534
I would argue that $ per hour can be a negative in opportunity cost. You can't measure happiness, but if I'd have a really good time spread over five hours, or the same amount of fun in 1 hour and then spend 4 hours doing something useful, the latter is probably better.
>>97835554
>For an american $200 probably doesn't even register as money, it's like having a few beers with the lads for me.

Doubt.
We're not fatcats because we spend $200 on a night out, we're poor because a night out costs $200 if we were to go.

Bandits shouldn't be level 2, they should be level -1.
>>
>>97834986
The problem is a lot of stat blocks are from APs so they won't show up with generic names.

As you pointed out, Bandit is a level 2 creature. But Thorn River Bandits and Black Tear Cutthroats (from the Kingmaker AP) are level -1 and also super generic, as are Abberton Ruffians (from Extinction Curse).

This is why Nethys is a godsend sometimes. Just narrow the search for humanoids levels -1 to 1 and you're golden.

Paizo should stop trying to be DnD's sloppy alternative and embrace an Anime artsyle. Get the Dungeon Meshi author on it. Fuck it. They'd make fucking millions being the weeb alternative to DnD's boring ass front page fantasy artstation artstyle.

I have found most systems for armor and defense unsatisfying.
I find pure damage negation doesn't represent that armor doesn't just reflect but also reduces a lot of damage too, a hammer to the helmet won't just plink off its going to have some significant concussive effect, if less than against an unhelmeted head. But on the other end, armor as pure static damage reduction often doesn't illustrate the other end, that many attacks SHOULD simply be negated, a knife thrown at a breastplate won't just deal less damage, it will ping off harmlessly.

And Barbarians of Lemuria, Specifically the Mythic version, I believe addresses both those concerns for me.

This is done by a. health and damage being kept rather conservative and relatively equal, not becoming exponential as levels go up and b. armor being a die you roll for damage reduction rather than a static number. The range of damage that armor protects just so happens to align with the damage most weapons can do. damage being 1-6 + strength and armor protecting 0-5 damage. meaning that a low roll on most attacks and a high roll on most armor saves will have the armor totally negate attacks, while a high attack roll and a low armor roll will totally bypass armor, and a medium attack roll and a medium armor roll will deal reduced damage.

This is all modified by the fact that 2 handed weapons you roll 2d6 and pick the highest damage, medium weapons you roll straight 1d6 and light weapons you roll 2d6 pick the lowest. And armor ranged from light reducing d6-3 damage (0-3 damage), medium reducing d6-2 damage (0-4 damage), and heavy reducing d6-1 damage (0-5 damage). This means a dagger has the potential to deal as much damage as a great axe if situation permits (like dagger to the eye slit), but is less likely too, and that light armor could fully protect you from a glancing blow like heavy armor, but is also less likely too.

Meant that it's pretty dumb to say there is a "universally better" armor system because every game has different aims, and you should ask yourself if that way of using armor (or anything) works within the specific framework.
>>
>>97832349
OP said favorite, not perfect though. So the one you have the most affinity with rather than it working in every instance.

You can have a favorite very complex armor system, but acknowledge that it might not be good for a specific rules light and non simulationist kind of game. Or vis versa you like a very abstracted armor system, but it might not fit your current game of GURPS THe Armored Autist expansion. Or your favorite might be a balance of complexity and simplicity.
>>
>>97817261
I think old fallout's DR/DT system makes the most sense. Some armours just reduce damage (eg. Nonrigid armours like mail or kevlar) and any significant hit will still injure the person behind it to some extent. Other armours can largely or outright prevent the wearer from suffering any injury (generally rigid armours like plate or ceramic inserts) up to a point.

Of course limits exist, as the example given of a hammer to the helmet, but those could be done via weapon rules and modifiers.

Does anyone else have an autisticly specific go-to armor set up they prefer in games? I do.

I always liked the idea of a medium armored guy who wears a full buff leather coat and leggings as a base, has a breastplate, mail voiders to cover the shoulders and armpits while not being as heavy as a full mail shirt, Some open faced visored helmet or secrete under a brimmed hat, long gauntlets that cover the forearms, and a targe shield that is strapped to the upper arm of the off handed side to provide one side of the upper body with full protection while keeping the other side maximally mobile.

seems like a good level of protection while also not requiring too much bother to put on and take off alone. Also If I abandon the voiders and shield, it should be essentially silent for stealth as the breastplate would only be touching fabric. Basically looking like a English civil war cavalryman with extra mail around the shoulders and a small shield protecting his right upper arm.

Oh yah, another small autism point I thought would be neat would be to line the outside of the collar of a high collared coat with mail, so that you could button it up past your nose to make a sort of mail bevor Like the kind of high collars Highwaymen have. pic related. or just a normal bevor.

If you want to tourneyfag, spam nothing but 30x Night Goblins with fanatics, a pair of doom divers, and a few tiny mobs of boys with bows to screen and play objectives. Mangler squigs, squig hoppers, and black orcs on wyverns also see play.
For more thematic armies, you can still be powerful so long as you avoid obvious traps. Spider riders suck, the Arachnorok is overcosted, and regular squig herds will do more damage to you than your opponent since everything moves so slowly. Trolls are bad, only get one if you're running a Troll Horde or you really want a Hag.
Regular mobs of boys are some of the most point efficient infantry in the game, 5 points for T4 and the Choppa rule is great. If night goblins weren't busted we'd see them everywhere.

Long time MtG player (17 years?) and with what's happening to the game rn, i don't really have much interest in any of the new sets.

Sorcery looks like it could maybe scratch that itch. The art is fantastic and reminds me of legacy MtG art. Anybody here play?

I watched a few overview vids, but I'm curious how the actual gameplay goes.

For someone who plays mostly EDH, are there any similarities?

Is it usually a 2 player match?
How long are the matches usually?

Is it as much of a money pit as MtG?

Convinced a few of my MtG friends to give it a shot based off of the art alone. Just need an idea of what I'm up against in terms of learning curve.

MTG player of 22 years that only plays premodern now here. Played in an 8 man Sorcery draft the other day and it's hands down the most fun I've had with a card game in years. Can't recommend it enough, man. If you have an LGS nearby with anyone that plays, join a draft and give it a shot. The grid adds a lot of depth in strategy.

Is that Ian Miller art?
I'm sold.
I rate him over Blanche.

Yea he painted a lot of cards in this recent set. the playmat for The Void is great, it's huge. Miller has been one of my favorite fantasy artists since Mirage came out, I really want to get an original piece from him before he's gone.

I wonder where my copy of the Tolkien Legendarium he illustrated went from time to time.
The Barrow Wights page has my favourite drawing.
Here's a little version of it, fuck Pinterest trying to hold the full size one hostage.

I want to do that for Close and Violet despite not really liking Liberator or play their decks. They are just very pretty.

>not really liking Liberator
Wild take for a guy who plays Card Games.

shoto/ptero makes it really boring imo, all other characters are better
>>
>>97835409
Winr exists so your statement is incorrect but I don't really see the issue with Shoto. His character arc from shitter to world champion was absolutely earned.
Though I will agree that Liberator has cooler side characters.

I hate Liberator because longstrip/webcomic is a shit format.

How high would you rank the riding skill of the average Comanche Warrior in your system of choice? Explain your answer.

>How in the world could you come to the conclusion that modern firearms were being talked about given the context of the post chain?
Because you used the present tense instead of past tense.

Dex no lower than 3 (despite being NPCs)
Riding 3 (they are NPCs), +1 point in Horses specialty
This in total gives them average of 3.5 and thus able to automatically pull most of equestrian tricks and have 50% chance for the really hard stuff.
Any important character gets either Riding or the specialty bumped a point. Any really important character gets their Dex bumped up

They were tougher than Spaniards and Mexicans but got btfo by Americans once they got their shit together.

So this pic is very pertinent to you then.

That's a Praxian warrior of the Bison tribe.
They're basically bootleg redskins who are currently on the backfoot due to the Lunar Empire invading Prax, and making an alliance with the hated Sable tribe (Sable Antelope).

Praxians are nomads, and their chief god is "Waha The Butcher", who teaches "The peaceful cut" which encourages the spirit of a hunted animal to return.

They have many tribes, which have totem animals, which most of the use as mounts.

In the Godtime, the Praxians and their beasts were one, but when Chaos entered the world just before the end of the Godtime, the land began to die, and the Praxians had to draw lots with the animals, to see who would be the eatsers, and who would be the eaten.
Because they have thumbs/are smart, humans won all the contests, except for one; the cunning Morocanth (Giant Anteater) are intelligent non-humans who herd non-sapient humans called "Gerns", mostly using them like retrievers, occasionally to pull carts, and once in a while, to eat.
They have no thumbs, so Morocanth are less Dexterous than Humans or Gerns, resulting in a malus to most forms of complex object manipulation, like crafting or using most hand-weapons, but some Morocanth know a ritual to steal a human's thumbs.

They are considered untrustworthy, as the human legend says the Morocanth cheated in the game of the eaters and the eaten, gerns however are not considered human by praxians, and are eaten occasionally by human Praxian tribes, usually after a raid on a Morocanth tribe yields many captured Gerns.

Gerns are considered inferior to traditional livestock by humans, as though having a "Beast rune" where their "Man rune" should be allows them to live by grazing, they aren't as useful to humans, who fund their thumbs unremarkable, and that they grow too slowly for a meat beast, cannot be ridden, and have poor carrying capacity.
