Does anyone else feel like the Byzantine Empire is the closest thing human-kind had to an Elven civilization analogy during our actual history's middle ages? Or am I crazy?

Even the part where their highly advanced culture was eventually wiped off the face of the Earth and forgotten in most normie perceptions of history.

DUDE I just LOVE the hustle and bustle of the big polis, it’s so DYNAMIC and makes me feel like i’m in one of my favorite Acritic songs. you should totally come on down to my courtyard villa, it’s got EXPOSED ASHLAR BLOCK walls and everything, we can tap open a Cretan muscat or the whole amphora and get crazy watching some torchlight processions on Apokreas! and dude, dude, DUDE, we have GOTTA go down to the Hippodrome- listen here, right, it’s a stadium where us ROMAIOI who do our civic duty can go watch CHARIOT RACING. BUT!!!! it’s also an POLITICAL FORUM like when we were GREEN senators, so we RIOT and FIGHT the BLUES, without dumb quaesitores bothering us. speaking of which Paraskeva and i have finally decided to tie the knot- literally -we’re tying our prayer ropes this evening and becoming monks! that way we can save denarius to spend more on our piety and our ICONS . i’m fuckin JACKED man, i’m gonna SLAM this Retsina and pop open another one!!!

Why is it that so many fantasy writers make their evil cults unjoinable by anyone with a functioning brain cell? Like why would you worship Orcus, whose goal is omnicide? Why would you worship Tzeentch if he’s probably gonna screw YOU over as part of his grand plan?

What makes it so bizarre to me is that, firstly, it’s not like they need to be so off-putting to be evil. Orcus is a demon of undeath, his followers want to turn their enemies into the undead. Tzeentch wants the world to be in a constant cycle of chaos, his followers are gonna be masterminding world wars.

Secondly, it’s not like we don’t have plenty of examples of real-world evil cults. A lot of cults in the West don’t follow Super-Duper-Mega-Murder Satan, but are fucked-up offshoots of Christianity. Historically, goetia was practiced by people who would’ve still called themselves Christians, while committing rituals to summon and get boons from demons. Plenty of human cultures used to sacrifice humans to their gods, not to summon them to kill everyone or some shit, but to honor and/or appease them.

Like to use another example from Warhammer, I think Nurgle and Khorne present more “approachable” evil cults. Nurgle is toxic positivity, and his love will take all the pain away. Khorne is wrapped up in enough language about honor to lure people in.

Like to rework an evil deity, let’s pick Lamashtu. Instead of “We love ugliness and miscarriages and also you get to die in childbirth”, the cult targets vulnerable young women and lures them in with divine feminine language (“You have the power to bear and raise great beasts”), while promising the young men of monstrous races frustrated living among humans that what they’re scorned for is what makes them powerful (and also they get to have sex with pretty girls).

>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, SAGA, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void,
Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

The fireball is also a direct upgrade to the Large Catapult since it's not subject to the triangulation and variation rules and just goes where you want it.
The lightning bolt isn't so much of a direct upgrade to the Heavy Field Gun, since although it has the same witch and isn't subject to the variation measure and firing dowel black/white bounce modelling shit, and can indirect fire to get around terrain obstacles, it only hits 6" of its range instead of the 22" (white) or 14" (black) of the standard HFG.
Interestingly, I think original Chainmail is the only game in the entire Chainmail/D&D line where those spells support indirect fire, everywhere else they are solely linear.

It really irritates me that the books treat both Morgoth and Sauron as non-issue pushovers. The idea of them being doomed to lose and good winning is fine, but that's an omniscient cosmological view. The actual characters should consider them pretty terrifying bad guys, but Morgoth is literally laughed at by the other Valar and bullied and Sauron is punked on by a dog and Gandalf treats fighting him and destroying the ring as urgent as having afternoon tea. It saps any tension the narrative might have otherwise, and it's one thing the movies did better imo, especially with the Ring.

>movie: gandalf finds the ring, oh fuck oh shit frodo you need to get out of here, this is dangerous shit, even i shouldn't touch this, it's too powerful

>book: gandalf finds the ring, oh wow so interesting anyway pass me the pipeweed frodo, i'm gonna crash at your place for a year and chill out, the ring's no big deal it can wait, last time sauron had it he lost anyway (this is without exaggeration literally how it goes in the book)
They go on to take it to Tom Bombadil who acts like it's just a worthless piece of tin and laughs about it, then to Elrond who suggests maybe someone should destroy it and Glorfindel says it's not worth his time and he can't be bothered to so Frodo volunteers via mind control by Gandalf. Also without exaggeration what happens in the book. The writing is much worse than most people realize.

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>How do I get started?

Actually it is more historical. It the old Rus' times it was named Kyev. After tha fall of Rus due to Mongol invasion "ikavism" appeared in Ukrainian language, so "e" changed to "i": Kyiv, when the city was under The Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Rzeczpospolita. "Kiev" is a modern name of the city from Russia under imperial times.

So for "the principality of" it is more accurate to have Kyiv or Kyev, there are more authentic vibes.

Idk if this was intentional or just a coincidence about the worldbuilding but while reading up on Islam for a college project I came across this
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aniconism_in_Islam
Creating paintings or sculptures of living beings is already a contentious topic in the Muslim faith, with some believing that by doing so you’re imitating and/or challenging god’s sacred authority as the creator of life. So what the Sultanate is doing with their homunculi and alchemical fuckery would be considered RIDICULOUSLY blasphemous. I know people have complained about the game walking on eggshells with Islam by not making the Iron Sultanate too grimdark in comparison to the Christian factions, but I haven’t seen anyone bring this up?

>Cyberpunk 2020 vs. Cyberpunk RED?
Cyberpunk 2020 is the second edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG that focuses on simulation gameplay and has a black trenchcoat aesthetic.

Cyberpunk RED is the fourth edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG that is set after Cyberpunk 2020 following the Fourth Corporate War, focuses on more balanced gameplay and is more streamlined but has less content.

You can discuss Shadowrun here too because I also feel bad for those guys.

Depends entirely on the person. I like 2e because shadowrun, to me, will always be the early 90s roc paperbacks. I've also heard good things about 4th/5th. It seems like the most recommended is 20th anniversary.

You should check out the 4th Corporate War books from 2020 in >>97200207. Obviously the corps aren't allowed to go that all-out anymore but it could inspire you.

My favorite cyberpunk ™ corporate job is employee extraction (very rarely the target actually does want to work for you!). It can get extra dicey if you're forced to extract the target's family from the company dorms or you can challenge your players morals when they find out the target is actually fine starting fresh and abandoning his family, probably to the streets.

You can also go nuts with the corp's defenses. The 4CW had stuff like concealed turrets that would pop out of the walls to defend against AV's flying around.

What corporation does your crew want to run for? Or which corporation looks like the most fun for you?

>>
>>97231057
Wait so Craftworld Eldar was a different fleet then? God damn it has been so long since I looked at the BFG rulebook, Armada, or any of the Specialist magazines. That does remind me I still have a whole Ork fleet still in the packaging I should get around to building.

I feel like this edition has alot of objectively bad things about it and is absolutely where the alot of worst qualities of current editions showed up. But I feel like I prefer playing this edition compared to a lot of previous editions and 10th edition. Its a weird transitional period where there's still a lot of the old units that haven't been legended yet while still having the fucking Primaris lot. Its strange but I don't feel like I'm missing out on much staying on this edition and playing with friends casually instead of going back to playing the current edition.

I enjoy playing some Index era 8th casually from time to time, it feels a bit like core book 3rd and as long as you aren't dealing with WAAC tournament grinders (which nobody still playing 8th should be having to deal with) it is a very fun way to play the game as far as Modernhammer editions go. I still mostly play 2nd, a little 3rd and 5th but Index 8th is the newest form of the game to exist in my rotation and I don't see that changing for a long time.

>Least delusional Eldar player

I remember 3rd was when the delusional BS started, online all Eldar players were discouraging everyone from playing them as they were for advanced players only when all they did was stick starcannons on everything.

Saying 7th taudar was only dominant a short time or that it was only as bad as necrons is pure delusion. 1000pts of taudar can easily table 2000 pts of necrons. You could even table 5000 pts of orks

Now here's a thought:
What if, on the image board for discussing tabletop games, we actually talked about things relevant to tabletop games?
What if, in this thread with people who didn't get a satisfactory answer from a gay frogposter, we talked about ways a rogue-type character could adopt the role of a "tank" to protect a caster-type character in a given game?
That way, this thread would have a reason to exist beyond baiting faking board activity; we could actually have an on-topic discussion on the traditional games board for once.

How does that sound?

Well, there's the issue right there; this thread is predicated on unanswered questions in regards to a gay frogposter's likely fake scenario that didn't provide a game or hardly any context to begin with.
All we ("we" as in, those of us with interest in this topic) have to go on is it's supposedly a game, and has at least rogues and casters as character options, and features hostile monsters.
