Nta but there are two tracks: stability and sanity. Stability is when you get spooked, and comes back relatively easily when your safe/in between investigations. Sanity is for the true Lovecraftian "my entire world view must shift to take in this new information," you don't have a ton of it, and you don't get back once it's gone. You're going to gain and lose stability every session but, theoretically, sanity is only for big stuff and will go much slower.

What does /hsg/ like and dislike in folk horror?
>>
>>97205163

I hardly think it's a defined "subgenre" you can really characterize as such (and that's a good thing, mind you, but makes it harder to discuss).

OOMM I would think about about Lovecraft who amongst other thing he revolutionized he came up with the idea of writing local horror if not full-fledged folk horror and point out that there might be a general pitfall: the "cosmical bike tour" as I call it.
As in, take his NE towns: Innsmouth, Kingsport and Arkham are probably close enough that you could make a bicicle day tour of all three in a day. Try not to make big shit too close to each other.

Also, I THINK that nowdays people (mostly living in at least small towns and not having daily relationships with nature) exacerbate the scariness of woods and darkness. I mean, they are a classic since forever for a reason, but it's a litlle... too obvious at times.
Another thing that's definitely overused is the "ancient (and more than probably evil) tradition". Yeah, country people enjoy their own traditions more than city folk and those (seem) older. But it's not the victorian era anymore, and they are not isolated and wholly uneducated.
>>
>>97205163
>What does /hsg/ like and dislike in folk horror?
If you are going to do folk horror, I am asking you nicely to either create wholly original creatures, keep your shit as authentic to real traditional tales as you can get, or stick to folklore with strong literary traditions. Pop folk horror has done irreparable harm to oral traditions, polluting public conceptions of various tales, burying actual folklore in modern fantasy, and in some cases inventing stories whole cloth that end up confusing folklorists.

I'm not one of those "keep in mind some things considered folklore are actual real world beliefs of living people that should be treated with respect" hippies, you should be able to tell a story about anything, but if you're gonna change a story consider whether you need to associate it with folklore in the first place instead of presenting it as an original concept. Erosion of oral traditions is a serious cultural problem globally.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

You write something up! If it's good it'll be included, but I wouldn't go above one paragraph, unless we decide to add a whole new chapter, in which case we might do one paragraph per classic setting: Blackmoor, Outdoor Survival, Greyhawk, Wilderlands, and the Known World (NOT Mystarda).

>>97206084
>one concern that was raised is they have too much gold!
No such thing. This is a player skill problem. But it comes up so often we might add a section on this as well in the n00b guides.

>How do you track and generally handle regional or world-shaking events
I don't, unless they're precipitated by player actions.

>how are you making your campaign world feel alive at the larger scales
Frankly, I don't think world-shaking events are necessary to make the setting feel alive.

The very idea that world-shaking events are needed is from literature and from storyfaggot settings that are just bad literature. D&D doesn't need any of that: It feels alive for the simple fact that players can do shit in it, and the world reacts to it.

NTAYRT.

The excuse given was they had already planned campaign 4 before Daggerheart was completed, they didn't want the players to learn an unfinished system that was subject to change because it would be cumbersome, the unfinished project would also be complicated to plan a campaign around until the rules were finalized, and, most importantly, they felt not using 5e would be off putting to their established audience who watched the show and understood 5e's ruleset so could follow the game easier.
they may or may not use Daggerheart for campaign 5. Odds are low they will and it's far more likely that Daggerheart will have a different group and GM for a separate thing.

Fuck em for not using any other system though. They made Daggerheart because WotC was supposedly some twisted shitheel of a company but wouldn't touch any other system? Fuck em.

DM cards are fucking BONKERS. I'm talking out loud but fuck it alright?

■ Dedede Danger Dash LFN4 (Whenever one of your creatures attacks, you may pay LFN4 to play this card from your hand.)

■ G-Neo Evolution: You may put this creature on top of one of your light, fire or nature creatures. (If a creature is under it, treat it as a Neo Evolution Creature, and when it would leave, all cards under it leave instead.)

Blocker Blocker ■ Speed attacker

■ Mach Fighter ■ Double breaker

■ Whenever one of your creatures wins a battle, look at the top card of your deck and put it into your hand or mana zone. Then untap all cards in your mana zone.

This is a four drop in all reality. Like Bolshack shenanigans aside the power creep is fucking insane. I expected that from dragons, let alone the flagship dragon, but what the fuck.

Just as a rundown pic related:

■ Whenever your opponent puts a creature that costs more than the number of cards in their mana zone, they put it into their owner's mana zone instead.

■ Super Soul Cross (If this is under a creature, that creature also gets the following ability.)
■ At the end of your opponent's turn, if they have no tapped creatures, you may put the top 2 cards of your deck into your mana zone. If you do, return a card from your mana zone to your hand.

PPP is an anti meta card to fight off free casts. Let's just go ahead and assume you have Pandora Princess-Prin. If you went second against THIS >>97200585 you still lost because you might not have been able to either legitimately summon it by ONE mana, or might not be able to cheat out a THREE DROP to prevent free casting. I'm still doing research, and looking at meta decks is helpful (thank you anon for all the help on that) but this is a lot stronger than I initially thought.

I think most anti-meta cards that are used mainly for their anti-meta properties are 2 or 1 drops. Turn 3 is usually when people typically pop off if uncontested. Caddy Beetle >>97202573 does the same anti-meta thing for 1 cheaper.
Prin in the early mid-game seems really good though. Forcing your opponent to attack earlier than they might want to or give you card and mana advantage. Especially good because it'll keep that ability when evolved.

>In the game Werewolf: The Apocalypse, the Garou (werewolves) were made to defend the earth from the cosmic forces that threaten to tear it apart. The Garou fight against the Wyrm, the destroyer. It is a struggle against nearly insurmountable odds, especially considering the rivalry between many tribes. These rivalries make it almost impossible for the werewolves to present a unified front against a cosmic force that pervades reality.
>From this morass of hatred and mutual betrayal, there is little hope that the Garou can emerge triumphant against a foe so well armed as the Wyrm. The Wyrm promises money, power, sex, and whatever else the heart desires to its followers while the Garou receive no reward for their striving. It drives them deeper and deeper into despair, or into betrayal so deep that they choose to serve the Wyrm instead.

My personal opinion is that the first couple of games is boring as hell with a lot of keyword learning.
Next couple are pretty solid. Strategies start shaping up. Faction starts showing its strength and core differences.
The games after that? God tier stuff. Keywords are second nature. Long game strategies are in place as opposed to turn by turn strategies. Map is getting shifted a lot as players lean into earth shaping. Merc units that were once "neat but unneeded" become big fucking deals and the game cements itself as one of the best games out there.

Early games are painful and I don't blame people for passing on it though.
>>
Factions list (not counting newest)

>Heirs
Fast, cheap birbs. Easy to learn for newbies, not much depth outside of when to utilize kamikaze hummingbirds.
>Brawnen
Source hungry giants. Also easy to learn. Much tougher than birbs and can absolutely wreck shit pretty damn fast if you don't check their source gain.
>Grovetenders
Ents go to war. Unique summoning mechanic from their Taproot minions can keep opponents guessing. Ignoringing anything that the leafy cunts bring out is asking for pain. Brings to mind Green plays in MtG where that 1/1 nobody is suddenly a beefy bitch you let through that is now eating your fortress for lunch.
>Naora
Versatility. Most unit variety in the game and all are available from the start. None of them are particularly strong to counter this. Means you got an answer for everything though.
>Grieg
Bugs. They can build tunnel entrances that act as portals only they can use allowing them to bypass a lot of the map and defenses. Evolution mechanic is tricky to time right. Queen can be an absolute nightmare of a unit late game but her health is tied to the fortress so bringing her out is dicey.
>Horizon's Wrath
Sky pirates using exploding barrels, pistols, and canons on their fortress. Their fortress is also an airship, so they can weigh anchor and move that bastard. Fun to play but fairly weak overall.
>Uprising

>Take the shortest path to an enemy
Incorrect. A minion must use all of its movement if it is possible, cannot retrace any spaces moved on it turn, and must end it's turn closer to the enemy fortress than when it's turn began.

New players read this as a minion taking the most direct route possible, but it doesn't say that. Let's say you got a movement of 4 and moving 3 spaces toward the gate or more will put you in firing range of an enemy spire and the enemy minions will move next to you on their turn for damage.
So instead of straight left four spaces as the most direct route, you go left, down, left, and up.

You fulfilled the movement requirement and rules but are out of spire range and now the enemy movement will have them in range for you to slap their shit on your next turn.

Shit like that is where tactics come into play. It's not "incredibly deep" shit but is definitely deeper than just slamming dudes into each other like idiots.
>>
>>97206063
Well, yeah, my point was that you can make the minions do slightly more than beeline to the enemy like the archetypical MOBA minion wave would, and I forgot that Cloudspire's movement rules are even more relaxed.

An off-species dragonmark is supposed to be exceptionally rare, practically one-of-a-kind. It is not something to be tossed on some random NPC.

https://5e.tools/book.html#efa,2,dragonmarks
>Mark of Prophecy
>You might bear a mark unrelated to your species. For example, you can choose to bear the Mark of Healing even if you're not a Halfling. Your dragonmark has nothing to do with the house's family line. It might be a direct mark of the Draconic Prophecy, or it could be an aberrant mark that happens to duplicate an established one. You'll probably never meet an NPC in the world like you, and House Jorasco might not claim you.

The current captain of the ship is a halfling (and seemingly unconnected to House Lyrandar, which is mildly out-of-the-norm for Lyrandar, but not totally abnormal).

The previous captain and pilot of the ship was a Storm-marked shifter, which is highly unusual.

That's my point. An airship haunted by a ghost that allows anyone to operate it is drastically more rare than the race of the individual with a specific dragonmark.
That's the sort of thing which is a massive plot hook by itself, and has far more implications on the setting than the writer deciding the ghost should be a shifter instead of a half-elf.

>What do you want for xmas?
MTG to die and WotC to go under.

WotC wouldn't have become what it is today if you paypigs didn't buy any D&D (after 3.5e) or any MtG or any Pokemon TCG. It's all your fault. And everyone ITT.

When did Warhammer go from being a game about making themed armies in cool campaigns into being a sweatlord tournament game where people whine about balance and how your models must be Games Workshop approved with the right weapons and no kitbashing? What even happened to campaign play?

>More insidious is shit like the Tactical/Devastator/Assault marines triad being replaced by Normal/Heavy/Light primaris marines.
That was blatant Standard Rotation for minis. I'm so glad Snaggas flopped or they'd have done it to every army in the game one by one.

Wait were snaggas part of a conspiracy push or something? I just thought they were a range expansion and nothing more.
