I recently read through the 2e rules and classes after years of being away from RPGs (largely due to disgust with wotc/5e and that being the only option in my area). I had really high hopes because of what I had remembered reading about some classes like Investigator and their Devise A Strategy, or the Swashbuckler and its Panache/Bravado. I also liked the idea of the 3-action turns. But honestly, I really dislike most of what I've read directly and over the last several threads here.
- Most classes have few class features, frontloaded in the first level or three and then basic stat boosts from then on.
- MOST features/actions/spells boil down to conditional +1 or -1 buffs/debuffs. I know it's supposed to still be functional due to degrees of success but it still looks like most of them would usually be ineffectual and dull, so why bother casting or using those abilities if you could just hit someone for real damage instead?
- MOST classes sound like they fail to deliver their class fantasy overall, whether due to being incompetent at their intended role or being a baffling mishmash of hyper-specific features that aren't coherent or thematic. Thaumaturge is a kinda neat idea but I just can't understand what it's supposed to be thematically other than its mechanics. I thought Exemplar would be like Hercules or the 4e Invoker, but they're all fixated on using artifacts they somehow make but only use up to one of at a time. It's lame. Oracle feels like a pale shadow of its 1e version I remember. Guardian is very coherent but seems utterly shoehorned into "guy with heavy armor who does nothing out of combat."
- In the end, the only classes that actually seemed like they'd be interesting to me are Alchemist due to its freebie items throughout the day (but which I don't trust to function well now), Commander, Investigator (to some degree and only if the metanarrative stuff doesn't break the campaign/DM), Kineticist, and Swashbuckler.

Am I right? Is it really this bad?

Yikes, shame about this team, especially with how happy I was with the paintjob. I don't care about power level beyond a certain extent, but every balance update has just neutered the fun parts of the team more and more. Now it'll feel like the dollarstore version of the team, with a priest that dropped out of primary school holding a lame sermon and using his ability, "shimmy some parts of the procession". I'll need to forget how it has felt to play them so far before I can enjoy them again, which will take a long time.
Meanwhile canoptek got a little slap on the wrist and technically a buff to their biggest gun?

Let's Make A Warband Generator Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

Should Space Marines be made more common? These mythical warriors of only 1 million or so total spread thin throughout the Imperium does NOT match up with what we actually see, which is the Astartes showing up in large numbers to even minor conflicts and dying in large numbers as well.

The route I would take is reduce their lore capabilities to get closer to the tabletop feeling, and increase chapter numbers to allow more narrative room for losses. A supersoldier rather than a demigod, and 10,000+ a chapter so 10-50 deaths isn't a remarkable loss.

I imagine it's having the players actually pick a direction to begin with. Obviously you don't want to interfere with the players' decision making process, but there does come a point where caution and preparation becomes indecision and fear of commitment, and a proper GM knows when to signal the players they need to do something if they aren't actively trying to suss out more information to make a better decision.

Here are all the major problems with it IMO.
>Blocker is way too powerful and basically gives one player the ability to dictate how combat works and there are few tools to work around it. Only one player essentially gets to play the game.
>Blue has too much utility. Resting, bouncing, ping, card draw, repair.
>Blue and White have the best commands in the game to control the board and have a bigger impact than the red and green commands.
>Kira and Amuro give a huge advantage in combat when persistent damage is supposed to be a thing.
>High Maneuver is too exclusive.
>There is so much Ping that it makes anything with 1 HP worthless and makes go wide tokens horrible.
>Green Tutors are restrictive and can whiff, which makes them worse than card draw.
>Support should be able to be used during the action phase and not be exclusive to main.

My setting is an Age of Sail world where all the elemental and other planes of existence are forced into the Material Plane and the Drow ended up in a caldera out at sea where they hastily had their spiders shit out a ton of webbing to create a canopy of webs that block out the sun. Lolth has gone silent and they aren't sure what to do now.
