I literally had this exact problem.
>game about war-torn land between local lords and factions after king passes away
>party starts on a promising small growing town
>local leader is killed during an attack so populace is growing restless and no real leadership
>literally tell players from the start it's about base building, gathering NPC followers, dealing with neighbors
>they do not of that
>we go to tavern and ask to fight monster
>okay, we did that, what now?
>we go to tavern and look for new monster to fight
>okay, monster hunt done, what now?
>we want to go to tavern and monster hunt
>see this shit is going nowhere, throw party several hooks about neighboring town demanding tribute, warband mercenaries that just attacked a trade caravan, news of other noble houses starting wars
>uhhhh this politics and stuff sounds too dangerous lets monster hunt
>looking back, should have never allowed the fat neckbeard to make his Ciri Witcher character because he was the driving voice between the other wallflowers stating they want to monster of the week hunt

That's retarded, allowing even the smallest chance for that to succeed would be retarded, and would make the guard look retarded. Sure the DM could of set the to something retarded like 40, but that'd be retarded. You're retarded, and you'lr argument is like 1 degree separated from the "strawmen" you're crying about, pic related.

Ask them what they know about the setting next time, as unbelievable as if might seem it's possible they zoned out so much they didn't understand what you were getting across. Asking them to recite the information back at you puts them on the spot and makes it clear they need to know what they're talking about. If they don't know it will be obvious who's fault that is.

Lads, tell me. I am looking for a new game.

It boils down to these three:

Konflikt 47
Marvel Crisis Protocol
Star Wars Legion

K47 has some appeal in the weird war 2 setting. Seems like the easiest game to get into. But the Bolt Action base feels... super lame? Like a very generic wargame, you know, few special rules, few abilities, everyone is basically the same...

MCP might be neat, I like the low model count and special abilities and narrative+game combo, but it feels like a very competitive, tryhard game that will make my brain explode. Also super expensive.

SWL seems cool in that it does things differently to other games, but I am sort of worried it is very... "schematic" or "abstracted" for a lack of a better word? Like I am not playing on a proper battlefield, but basically sort of exchanging activations in a vacuum, like playing a card game, not moving soldier dudes to cover etc.

Are my assumptions wrong? I am fairly experienced in other small-to-large skirmish level wargames though not the usual 40k "2000 points and 100 dudes" games.
>>
From my point of view Dark Icky would be a cool name
>>
>>97259329
So, the "mertalizer". Did they just make that one up for Legion?
>>
>>97266587
Yep. Same with the Shore Trooper Mortar. And the upcoming Guerilla Troopers for rebels.

Game companies coming up with new things to suit their needs is not a new thing.
>>97266466
That's kind of a vague critique, anon, but I think I know what you mean. I suggest taking a look at a few battle reports on youtube.

>abstracted/schematic
Not really, imo. You could say it about the command card effects, but this is the only obvious aspect. In my experience, almost all units just feel right to their portrayal in Star wars, especially the characters.

As someone with 100+ Legion games under the belt, the game does feel like a proper war game. It is a game that rewards good movement and positioning, looking at the battlefield holistically, and setting up blocks and traps.

The nice thing about Legion is that its listbuilding system discourages extreme skews, making sure that almost all lists look like proper armies.

Are there any mechanics in particular that you want to ask about?

I’ve been thinking of something to write with Jian. I think after the latest writefag he’d want to get stronger, since he was trying pretty hard to protect Moyu. I was thinking of using Chizi and Linghao in this story, maybe Shen again so that Jian can have that convo where it’s not his job to protect her, but Shen’s. Nobody knows this, but that’s step 1 in the looooong staircase to building their ship.

>>97264107
My first draft of the fight had Dashan tanking a second strike from Duan Lian for Jian, the talismans on him being the main reason he gets away without losing a limb. But finding a way to get him to the fight was difficult (maybe carried by Sanmo? But then he'd have to wait outside the gambling den the entire gambling scene, and he's a giant stone dog so I don't know if Sanmo can even lift him fully).

I think I was going to include a line or two during the excuses/kowtow loop where Jian mentions that he needs to wait for Dashan to finish being painted by Ri, but ended up forgetting to add that - I was very quick with my proofreading/edit phase since I didn't want to delay the writefag any longer.

The neo-nazi seemed to be legitimately clueless about the existence of kindred. They probably don't know they're being used by them. I can imagine food and drinks contaminated with vitae as a way to ghoul them.
Militias are typically armed to the teeth and paranoid about being infiltrated, which is why we'd rather solve the issue the Brujah way than the Toreador way, this time.
To count some heads, House Venus is a coterie of 6 quasi-ancillae, plus one quasi-Elder with her fledgling. They can add drones, "land-drones" (robot dolls), and military grade-ordnance for example anti-materiel rifles, fully-automatic shotguns, LMGs, explosives, etc. as force multipliers.
>>
>>97260740
If you need bodies or weapons, I will provide some if required. I have a total of 50 Cauldron-Born, 10 various kindred and multiple crates of weapons available. -Kakophoni
there's no trick, Kakophoni is genuinely offering help, most of the weapons were taken from the Sabbat warparty that invaded his haven
>>
Mommy's home! What an unforgettable, brilliant use of my time, having a willing Prince in my clutches while I tour Europe over Christmas week! A pity they had business to attend to on New Year's.
>>97255436
>>97260690
>>97260740
Ideally we could set the operation in the the night between the 2nd and 3rd day of January, where the kine are off the streets. A lovely way for Bridgeport to start the new year indeed.
If we can count on the kine police's assistance, I would like the buildings within the perimeter of the "crime scene" to have their utilities (electricity, gas, telephone, internet, roads), anything and everything, suspended while nothing or no one enters or leaves the are, until our "investigation" is concluded.
We would also like to commence our operation without issuing any warning, lest the enemy weapons be loaded and ready at hand.
House Venus is waiting for the Prince's authorization to proceed as well as to know who is going to assist us from the local kindred enforcers and coteries. I bet there's a Brujah who can't wait to bash some skulls.
>>97261365
Provided said various kindred are introduced and obedient to the Prince properly, we could use their help, our cause is just.
The cauldron-born sound a bit too unwieldy in this age where cameras are everywhere, and so are wi-fi and satellites that can count eggs on a table.
Counting more heads, House Venus has 10 more Allies in total, 8 ghoul Retainers, and Boy Toy has 4 dots in Armory which is exactly what is needed to have House Venus +2 more people in full SWAT gear.
>>
i havent checked this in a month, when the fuck did this become some kind of fucked up mommydom general?|
>>
>>97266286
There are two ongoing chronicles: the (dis)adventures of Venus in Furs' childer in Bridgeport and the flesh apocalypse in Marquette told by H0T_G4R0U3S_1N_Y0R_3R34. Both began sometime around mid-november

Im out of my depth here

TL;DR Im trying to learn how to run a setting I have no experience with. Looking for setting influence.

-

I would like some help with this concept, post apocalyptic science fantasy. The idea that the world was propelled forward by magic tremendously, but then cataclysmic events reset civilization, and now were living in the post era.

Im used to running Sci-Fi, Cyberpunk, Shadowrun, Lancer, but this new group has requested me to run fantasy for them.

I agreed, but I told them I wanted to draw from influences that im familiar with, the closest comparison I can think of is the Televison Show Adventure Time where there was technology and then a fall, and now we have magic and some science tech. Disparate cities and no main governing body.

-

So, im looking to add to my influence, are there any pre existing settings ? Are there any fun things you've ever wanted to do along these lines ?

Trench Raiding With The Lads Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

I'm still in the brainstorming phase, but cavalry should
>have base movement 24", charge 36"
>basically have to attack flank or rear of enemy formation
>if they charge into front of infantry formation and they don't rout in one single turn they have to retreat and morale test
>enemy cavalry should be allowed to immediately counter charge if they aren't engaged and meet your cav halfway if they're in range
>buff their attack, lower their defense

>>97266701
This is not tenable for a turn-based game. Go be obnoxious somewhere else.
>>
>>97266906
Okay, now go playtest your rules (with someone else as your opponent, preferably someone who has access to a sufficiently sized army to test how your rules play vs. infantry and cavalry units), find out if they make the game more or less fun, and report back. Personally, I think your ideas are going to make the game unplayably bad and make it so that no-one will ever bring infantry to a game.

GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

Thread question: How often do you use an official GURPS setting? Which are your favorites?

Welcome to /un0/, an RP thread for playing a World of Darkness/Chronicles of Darkness Hunter. For any OOC questions about WoD/CofD, check the official general. >>97224887

Rules:
>We are acephale. There is no storyteller, we are not a quest.
>This thread is based primarily but not exclusively in the nWoD/CofD game Hunter: the Vigil. However, Vigil is defined by being highly setting agnostic, with a system for creating entirely custom monsters that do not exist in other WoD/CofD games. Thus, you have significant freedom in what you want to play and what you want to hunt. Feel free to play a member of the Society of Leopold, or a member of the Lucifuge hot on the tail of a Lasombra.
>Namefagging is encouraged but by no means mandatory.
>Keep in mind that even highly experienced Hunters typically only have fractured pieces of the puzzle, and every table has their own canon. The night is dark and full of misinformation.
>/un0/ is conceived of as an experimental end to end encrypted program that is very hard to compromise, retains very little data and purges that data regularly. Please play an actual Hunter.
>Spoiler any OOC discussion.

Happy hunting.
Unless this thread somehow takes off like a rocket, this will be the last un0 thread for the foreseeable future. Towards the end of the thread, please give your feedback in regard to these shorter, limited run RP threads.

Losing her would be a huge loss considering all the time it took (including the vetting process) to get here to where she is. Honestly, mentoring is a challenge in and of itself.

That thought has crossed my mind. I'm still thinking about a good place to hide nearby, close enough to respond but far enough not to be seen.

Sounds like this is her first solo anything. If so might I suggest she does a solo investigation and then you both take down the vamp? Impart the knowledge and habit that it's better to tackle the actual monster with numbers

It can be. In my experience it's been a lot of reading which is enjoyable but there's a lot of GURPS books you might want, so be prepared to dive in.

I recommend checking out The Collaborative Gamer blog. It is all about using GURPS for GMless fantasy games, but the resources and pro tips can be useful for other kinds of GURPS games too.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

More early 20th century so there could be artdecoish but not as specifically aimed there.
Operation Whitebox is WWII but might work.

I've always been perma-DM for friends, and haven't DM'd a game in a few years of any sort. If I started to have time again, my friends would jump at the chance to play online (we all live states apart).

I've never played OSR games on either side of the table. I've run a lot of WFRP, some GURPS, some PF1e. I've dabbled in the rules of AD&D1e before, but even after skimming Old School Essentials and reading Principia Apocrypha and the other PDF recommended, I'm not sure I *get* OSR, but I'm very interested in running it.

More than even running my first game though, I feel like I don't understand it well enough to run. It's so foreign. I haven't read B/X and maybe that plus finishing the OSE rules will be enough, or maybe reading an adventure, but are there any streams of people playing an OSR game that I could follow? If I had a bit more free time, I'd almost be willing to pay to participate in an online one-shot (I've done once before just to 'freshen up' some of my skills and figure some things out when I felt out of my depth with online DMing in general)

We have two n00b guides linked in the OP that are much more concrete than those (highly overrated) primers. I recommend reading them and coming back with any questions you might have.

Sorry, should've mentioned I've read those too.

I feel like after 2-3 sessions, I'd be getting the feel for it, but it feels more alien to me on session 1 than not, and if I were actually gonna run this with some friends, even preparing them for all the 'differences' from what they're used to and getting them on board conceptually, it'd really throw a wrench in if I was actually running it with that bad of a feel.

That's why I'm really interested in just seeing some play examples.

I've looked. There really isn't anything that shows you the process from behind the screen. Bandit's Keep on YouTube is probably your best shot.
However I would advise just writing out in your own way a flowchart or procedure notes after reading the Moldvay Basic rules. Strictly following the procedure should be all you need as an experienced DM to find yourself playing in the OSR style. My own procedure notes in picrel may be of use, at least as an illustrative tool of what I'm talking about. Start the game as close to dungeon crawling as possible when you begin play.

Oh, I mean like, very specific things rather than the general ruleset, this tends to be swingy, but is rather alright in my book and the only major issue I had with it was how absolutely game changing armour is, and by extension how overpowered it makes armour ignoring attacks.
For example some scenarios just plain don't work very well, like dragon hunt. Some units are blatantly overpowered unless you have specific things countering them (death commando or left hand path hunter for example), while others are ridiculously trash (ecclesiastic prisoners especially come to mind).
