KINOOOOOOO
For real though, how would you tweak things? I enjoy the HH 2.0 rules and haven't played with 3.0 yet, but the LI rules bore me to tears because of how morale is handled.
Like, how many marines should I put on a base? Should I abstract the number? How should a command squad work? Should we work with 1 inch = 1cm or is that too truncated?
I've seen some people say use 40k Armageddon rules but I have no experience with that.
etc

Do you use lens and other tools to paint your minis? I've seen tons of your work in these threads and the mind boggles

You lazy motherfuckers really let the old thread expire and even hours later didn't create a new one. I mean I like creating the pics but still.
>>
>what game from your collection would you say are you the best at?
Going by BG Stats, Imperial Struggle. My ADHD-ridden brother gets his ass spanked every single time. But that's more his ADHD than me being good, so Brass and Power Grid are two others where my win rate is 2+ times higher than the expected win rate for the player count.

>dice or fixed values for combat resolution?
Most dice resolution sucks shit through a straw, yes even in otherwise good games, very quickly turning them into snakes and ladders. Dice should either have marginal impact or there should be some serious luck mitigation mechanics. Most times when people cope that these mechanics exist, the mitigation mechanics are the marginal part, not the core dice luck aspect.

On the other hand, fixed value combat is much harder to design, especially in a way that's not boring. I can name the number of good games with such combat on 2 fingers. They are Dune and Kemet.

Elementals are so shockingly conceptually vacuous it's kinda crazy. There's just... nothing there lol. A fire elemental is just made of fire. Motivations? Goals? Life cycle? It's made of fire, what more do you need to know?

Just make them Pokemon.

Sorry, was banned for 3 days

Well, he started off 1st level with some Greyhawk stuff I cooked up, eventually segued into Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil (horrible campaign btw), went through that and ended at it at level 13, we played 5 more adventures and they retired that character at 17th level in 3.x, which is pretty respectable. One of the few characters I ever saw personally retire instead of getting killed in action. I remember he took Hellfire Warlock as a prc but I modified it slightly. 3.x didn't need a lot of homebrewing iirc. I'd have to break out my actual notes for more details. I remember writing down his character level progress, which he changed a bit as we played ofc. That campaign lasted seven years but he went from 1 to 17 in a little over 3 years. Great player and he's become an excellent DM. His pacing is superb. He gathered some great magic items in that game and didn't recovered an Orb of Dragon kind (Black). He is, to date, the only character to ever recover one of those. I should dig out those notes. I think you guys would appreciate them.

Smothering Tithe is an actual EDH staple, no? It's obviously infinitely better in actual Coomander because there's 3 opponents instead of 1 but still, you can assume they netdecked EDHREC and just put in all the top cards I know I did, and I used to have it in my deck for that exact reason

>>
How whimsical can CtL get? The theme of changelings being afraid of returning keepers grinds down a bit too much for me, and it's worked into so many aspects of the setting it makes me question if it's possible to get away from that. I just wanna be a fairy, man.
>>
>>97820204
The Keepers never have to show back up, man. You can have an entire story about Courtly intrigue, or mapping the local hedge, becoming local 'superheroes' that protect your neck of the woods from hobgoblins and such.

>No one throws a fête like Pale Peony, the current Queen of Spring, but March the Mad Hare has designs on snagging the Antler Crown and becoming the Jackalope King. He wants the PCs to help embarrass her through a series of supposedly harmless faux pas to soften up her position so he can challenge her for the Crown at the next Spring Ball. He promises them cushy positions and titles of power once his decidedly more hedonistic court takes over. Do the PCs help? Do they curry favor with Pale Peony and rat out the rabbit? Or do they play both sides off each other and try to come out on top themselves?

Changelings, I think, also make for prime crossover material if that's your thing. Vampires make a good dark mirror to to them. Both groups feed off humans, after a fashion, and are concerned with politicking and maintaining a stable territory. It's one of the reasons I made them the second main splat in my Lost Vegas setting.
>>
>>97820204
Extremely.
Gentry are for the ST to use as he sees fit. Their plots can range from stuff like stealing every 3rd teacup in a village and taking a bite out of every pie to total galactic annihilation of everything that has and will ever exist.

If you want whimsy, just do it. Goblins and huntsmen exist as low and mid tier oponents. Or focus on tge byzantine nature of the courts where everyone will stab everyone else in the back over who gets the first dance with the spring queen but will fight to the last together simultaniously if the gentry ever come.

For whimsy i personaly wiuld focus on the well meaning but missguided plots of the bridge-burners. Their mission (for example, to prevent Gentry from noticing mortals and mortals stumbling into Hedgegates) can lead to a lot of low-stakes but high drama meltdowns like tryibg to stoo them from stopping the production of a theater play that portrays fae as positive or them trying to get the city to demolish an old villa on the edge of town where wild Hedgegates often form and many freshly escaped changelings exit on their flight from arcadia. You wouldn't stop tge city from replacing that dreamy old chateu with a beatiful parking lot, now would you?
Or just fuck with normies in fun ways. Nothing reprehensile about taking down the local mafia with unseen means or replacing all of a meth dealers meth with candy.
Or bully werewolves by throwing rocks from the moon at them. Or break into a vampires haven to draw penises on their faces during daysleep

>What are you struggling with?
I think it's mostly me wanting to improvise a lot of stuff since when I do prepare most of the stuff I write before hand ends up being really irrelevant.
>>
>>97822550
Ah, you're not alone in that, many people here and outside struggle with that. You may find good value in changing your approach to prep.
Like you said, if you try to zoom in and prepare something specific you risk not using it or having to quantum ogre it. YMMV as different groups deal with hooks and agency in different ways, of course.
What I find to be really effective in situations where you have to be ready to come up with stuff on the fly is having a more vague prep done, and work on the details when the time comes.
You want to have them explore an area, write down just the main players, their agenda and personality. Add creatures, split them into factions. Give a basic framework of how they interact with each other, and maybe a few notable happenings that can come up if someone asks or does something.
The PCs enter a valley, there's orcs there. You know that the orcs raid caravans, so that's a possible random encounter. The PCs want to look into it, you know that elves have been trying to trade, but their leader is ill tempered, so there's also a patrol of angry elves around, and maybe they blame the PCs if they loot the wrong thing or act in some aggressive way. Stuff like that.
You can come up with stuff because you know what the premise is and how the world would react, but you didn't write down anything specific.
>>
>>97822308
I usually just start with a single dumb idea and then expand on it. Like for my current game, I wanted to do a fairy tale storybook adventure. So right away, I decided all the sentient beings are talking cartoon animal people. Then I was like, what if all terrain, plants, and animals were made of candy / desserts? The rest of it pretty much wrote itself from there
>>
>>97822264
No time. Prep is noob trap.
>>
Been playing one shots lately, because of schedules conflicting and because I like trying new systems out to find the good ones to base a campaign around.
I tried several methods.

An Only War campaign that was mainly a series of combat encounters linked by a war movie plot that was just the ongoing conflict. One small starting operation against insurgents and then a longer conflict with Orks, that got sidelined after we couldn't manage to get together to play anymore. It's always there ready to continue if we want. Prep wasn't that deep, after I put together a few operation maps to give context during mission briefings. I probably spent more time cropping enemy stat profiles in a nice little sheet I could print out than getting sessions together.

L5R was the next big thing. I put together the basic premise, named a bunch of NPCs and gave them personality, ambitions and all that stuff, most of them aren't even statted beyond "generic+1" . I put together a small conspiracy plot in case the PCs needed a nudge, but they soon went in another direction and I rolled with that. Prep work gave me all I needed, I just had to come up with the details. I had another subplot ready just in case, and it's turning out to be the main plot in the current second campaign arc that we just started.

Between L5R arcs I GMd a cyberpunk 2020 campaign. It was supposed to be a sort of open table limited to our group but it soon became a regular campaign after a few players became unavailable. City map was done with google maps, a few factions with objectives and again a bunch of NPCs. We did keep the option to have the players change PCs between sessions, turned out pretty useful in some cases, like when the party had to interact with a zeppelin hijack from three different locations.

Next thing I'm going to prep is Exalted, still have to think how to tackle that because I want to study the system first and boy, is there a lot to read. Then maybe a classic fantasy using GURPS.

So what are you working on?

>Why should I homebrew?
/tg/ products are fairly unique in that it's actually pretty simple to make them these days, with a plethora of products to assist in making and playtesting your game. Making your own games helps understand why games are made the way they are, as well as being fun to do.

>What you should post
Ideas for games, games you're currently making, updates to your own games in broad strokes, and any homebrewing for existing products that don't get much attention. Discussion about the above is welcome. Post good, be good, and look over others products, they care if someone looks more than anything.

Dont worry about the actual dice before deciding how you want results to behave and people to act. Randomizers are just randomizers, so the form they take or the method doesnt matter until you have the vibe decided.

For instance, if you want to encourage players taking risks, make a blackjack-style mechanic and add whatever randomizer you think will work best for you. If you want something which makes more average results, use something that creates a bell curve. Et cetera

Also try to think about what mechanics you want to see, and what randomizers help you make that run smoothly. For example, a wargame im working on uses d12s because of how i wanted to do morale rolls (roll over [half the number of models the unit lost] plus [number of models lost this round] to avoid losing a model). I could use all sorts of dice or tweak the mechanic, but a d12 works well enough for it

most dice nerds 1) don't play games and 2) don't have a nuanced viewpoint like you do. good job anon

>>97824423
i would argue that doing exotic dice resolution mechanics ( which is generally anything other than muh d20 and muh big british pile of d6s) adds complexity that you can put in a more interesting part of your game. Using a classic dice resolution mechanic also will increase your player base. This depends on what kind of game you are making too - boardgamers are more open to alternate dice than wargamers or roleplaying gamers.

early in 13th age's release cycle someone asked Rob Heinz at a convention or AmA or something ' did you ever consider using something other than d20?' and his response was ' why?' and it was a correct response - he did several innovative things with the d20 that some cutting edge game like tom abbadon's icon use.

i think two dice + x is bad for RPGs and good for wargames. warmahordes used 2d6+x and you could boost a roll to 3d6+x for a mana. RPGs thrive on randomness.

Massively underrated setting imo
>>
>>97824206
it's not even "science" fantasy, it has the concept of spaceships going to other planets but it's all magic, as the name implies, and space doesn't work like real space but like a fantasy realm

>Blackmoor
A bit generic, but it's from like 1970 so that's forgivable. Charming but not a great setting overall.
>Greyhawk
The other OG. Don't know a ton about it but from what I've seen it seems pretty cool, a lot more '80s Sword and Sorcery' than a lot of the other D&D settings and a lot of modern fantasy fiction in general, which is nice
>Conan universe
I wasn't even aware this was an official D&D setting. Kino, though.
>Forgotten Realms
Easily my favorite and the one I'm most familiar with, but not without flaws. Probably the most fleshed out. It's the most popular for multiple reasons, even if half of those reasons are "Ed Greenwood is excessively horny"
>Spelljammer
Basically a meta-setting that was literally intended to tie all the universes together. Therefore, not particularly unique in its own right, but neat concept.
>Dark Sun
Pretty cool and underrated, I like the concept, but don't find it interesting enough to invest any particular attention in it.
>Planescape
Similar to Spelljammer. Most of the things it brought to D&D as a whole are no longer unique due to them being shared across most of the other settings.

>There's an implicit presupposition here that the players ask questions when they want something to be expanded on
>when they want something to be expanded on
Yes retard, that's the point. The DM going "idk, you tell me" is not an answer to the question the player asked. It is in fact signaling to the player that there isn't an answer, and never was. Why on earth would anyone want to play in a world that the DM knows so poorly he can't even answer basic questions about things nearby the playing area.
>>
>>97824926
>>97825110
For real let's do the reverse of this situation.
>DM: What's your AC?
>Player: idk, you tell me
Wouldn't that be retarded? Wouldn't you never want to play with someone who couldn't be bothered to do the bare minimum? Why do you think doing the bare minimum to run a game as a DM is any different?
>>
>>97825150
What a braindead comparison. AC is an actual mechanic with concrete numbers behind it, not worldbuilding.
>>

>Muh mechanic's
Basically every game explains in its rules that the GM should come up with the world. The good ones even give him tools to do it with.

But fine, here's another example:
>What's your character's name
>Idk you tell me
>What's his motivation
>Idk you tell me
Those aren't mechanically defined or even required to play the game. This must be your ideal player since your ideal DM does the same thing with his job.

>"DM, is there a blacksmith in this village?"
>Yea, sure, he moved out of the city to enjoy the quiet life after the accident. What was the accident?
>"What if... he was trying to forge a magic blade, and it blew up, accidentally killing his assistant? And him 'enjoying the quiet life' is actually him hiding from the Guild, who wants to bring him to justice?"
>That's sick, yea when you walk into the smithy you see a grizzled man pounding at an ingot with his left hand; his right hand is missing."

You're really gonna sit here and say "no, the DM should have pre-planned it all, and the player's fun idea for a plot hook is stupid"? Why not just have ChatGPT on text-to-speech and a robot roll your dice while your at it?

>Have you ever made a custom mount/vehicle for your character? how did that pan out?
Not from Scratch but I've designed a Solar Dragon as a socerous-working-forged familiar/mount. Used the Sky Titan as a baseline for flying mount then added in bits from other critters like the Tidemare's ability to serve as mass transit, and a custom breath attack.
>>

Based. What did you end up using it for?
>>
>>97822206
Transport / battle tank / primarily for intimidating unruly Gods because its claws could pierce sanctums and it was a Solar working so it could fuck up even decently strong opponents

They unironically think of martials as being for new players.
>>
>>97825172
The Hellknight feels like an interesting concept with a Fighter focusing on damage over time, but it really just ends up being X uses of Searing Smite per day.

Especially when they already introduced a Burning condition in the 2024 PHB. Why couldn't the subclass be 'When you deal Fire damage with your Hellfire weapon, the creature you hit starts Burning'.
1d4 damage wouldn't be anything special, but it also means that the creature has to use an action to drop prone to extinguish themselves instead, doesn't have a capped duration, and can't cure it just by regaining hitpoints.

>>97825212
>>97825239
>The cleric can spend a minute passively building up exhaustion on enemies and then if they die gets to blow them up and deal 3d6 damage to everything around them (of your choice) a number of times equal to their primary stat
>The fighter gets to add 1d6 once per turn a number of times equal to their secondary stat to apply a debuff that can be ended by any healing or a single action, but if you get lucky and roll a 6 it can also explode for a handful of damage (which can hurt yourself/allies)
What were they thinking lmao
>>
>>97813902
Would giving martials Musou-like attack ranges help bridge the divide with casters at higher levels? Basically multiply the range of melee attacks by their proficiency bonus and make all the attacks cones that cleave every other enemy in the area for partial damage. Flavor it as sword beams, air pressure from the strength of your swings, whatever. Ranged attacks instead just get a % increase in range = 10x the prof bonus or something.
>>
>>97825321
Debatable. It helps out their damage against groups of enemies, but at the same time even a 20-30 foot cone can be awkward to catch more than a few enemies in depending on the size of the space.
It certainly wouldn't hurt though.
I'd also say for ranged attacks you could have it be a line attack instead, piercing through enemies until it hits some solid cover.
