Welcome to /wbg/, the official thread for the discussion of in-progress settings for traditional games. Here is where you go to present and develop the details of your worlds such as lore, factions, magic and ecosystems. You can also post maps for your settings, as well as any relevant art (either created by you or used as inspiration for your work). Please remember that dialogue is what keeps the thread alive, so don't be afraid of giving someone feedback or post whatever relevant input you might have!Last thread: >>97665641Resources for Newfags: https://sites.google.com/view/wbgeneral/Worldbuilding links: pastee.dev/p/sp2Mdb5Ihttps://cryptpad.fr/pad/#/2/pad/view/Eo+fK41FKVR7xDpbNO0a0N4k0YYxrmyrhX3VxnM14Ew/Fantasy map generator: https://watabou.itch.io/medieval-fantasy-city-generator/wbi/: https://discord.gg/6ZjEc7dy4TWorldbuilding Hub: https://discord.com/invite/wGjxK3YThe Writer's Forge: https://discord.com/invite/CUxHxWqTira: https://discord.com/invite/f52W6KgDawn of Victory: https://discord.gg/hUAynC3wConlangerama: https://discord.com/invite/ceKjZBr2jCComment too long. I find interesting the different ways different societies handle crime and underclasses. Service State: In a society like, for example, 17th Moscow society is like a grid where everyone must occupy a fixed square. An outcast is a a wasted resource/lost tax revenue; essentially a theft of state resources. If you fall out, you’re pushed back in to serve a master, sort off like "rehabilitated" as in: “Put him back where he belongs”, usually back to being a serf, a master, or to the army (if they couldn't find a master) unless you manage to join the Cossacks. Moral-Economic State: In a society like Elizabethan England, society is an spectrum. Outcaste are a moral contagion/public nuisance. "Fuck the poor" vs. "Help the pathetic": You can fall to the bottom and stay there forever and become a career criminal, and entire subcultures exist outside norms “Punish and manage them”. street > jail > street > workhouse > repeat (if you didn't die of typhus in the process).
Thinking about introducing a disease or curse that if left untreated can cause a sort of ogreazation, where the body slowly transforms to become more ogre like with the final stages being a slow degradation of the person's mind. At first it seems like a boon. The person gets stronger, more durable, taller. Sure they are hungry nearly all the time but it's probably fine. But as it progresses the growth becomes uneven and ascetically unappealing. Maybe one arm becomes hyper developed, their face looses symmetry, they start growing boils and parts of their skin harden. None of it hurts but clearly something is wrong. Then hair starts falling out, or growing where it never grew before, teeth grow to the point that some no longer fit quite right in their head, and hunger pain is the only kind of pain they even feel anymore. Damage to their body heals wrong. Their bloated hands become clumsy bloated things that make doing most trades and crafts difficult. And the whole time they are getting bigger, not just taller but wider as well. Until after a long time, several years usually, their mind starts to degrade, memories from before this happens to them become harder to remember, abstract thinking and higher level reasoning become nearly impossible, and who they were slowly fades as they become someone, something else.

>>97849416>with homebrew you can do anything you want honestly.True. I was more asking because I didn't want to make redundant homebrew, I should have clarified that intially my bad.> in exchange do something like allowing the use of bardic music to enhance your summon spell by making it 1 spell level higher.Do you think that'd be required to make it viable or would simply being able to summon 1 or 2 additional creatures and add +100% to the buffing from inspire courage be enough? Genuine question. I would be open to both options as they both sound really cool. But the important thing is to make the bard be able to use bardic music to make their summoning a viable option.
>>97849722>>97849247Both good options. Although a doubled inspire courage bonus might make Dragonfire Inspiration a bit OP (I've already witnessed it become very strong even without such) so perhaps any ability that does so should be phrased as "this ability provides the second half of the bonus and does not count as part of the bonus from Inspire Courage [but somehow stacks with it, so it might have to be a circumstance bonus or something like that that represents interplanar synergistic energy]"
Bumping with an example of what I'm talking about. Would it be better to replace one of, or both of, these abilities that let you summon an extra creature, with one that lets you summon one from a level higher on the summon monster table, by spending a bardic music use? I feel like one of them letting you do that and the other letting you spend them to summon an additional creature, is cool. I like the downside that they go away if your performance ends, but that might be too much of a downside.
>>97852062I'm a little leery about that mostly because same as a Divine Metamagic cleric, turning a defining class feature into ammunition tends to have unintended interactions with other items/mechanics and also causes the class to lose identity. The allure of the summoning bard is the army in a can with the bard buffing all the summons, not a worse sorcerer.
>>97849914i think it would make it more thematically fitting. In lower to mid levels it would be viable. You spend your first turn summoning a pack of critters and then drop some inspire onto them and the rest of your party. Both options can work mechanically. Well having better options for creatures to summon is definitely better than the small increase that you would get from the doubling of inspire courage buff at the early levels and at high levels the opposite would be true.

Just remember: You deserve what you tolerate.
Repeat after me: MAKE. YOUR. POTIONS. IN. PILL. FORME!Pills are ancient, they predate Egypt! We made pills better in medieval Europe by putting them inside purified nontoxic silver to boost power, we don't do that anymore because it's too expensive.Whole reason why we take pills and don't drink medicine is because any medicine is just 0.1% active ingredients, putting it inside a pill is more efficient, making it a drink is wasteful.Realistically in DND, if potions were real, they'd kill adventurers, all over the Adventures Guild you'd see newspapers like:>SSS-rank barbarian killed in the Dungeon because drinking healpot takes too long!>LVL 99 thief killed in the Dungeon because he choked on manapot... it went down the wrong hole!>The Hero killed in the Dungeon because he tripped down stairs and broke all pots!Potions? Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! >>97851293If you truly understand the DMG, which is no easy task not only because it's written in High Gygaxian, but more importantly because a large chunk of what it tells you to do is completely unclear until you actually try it at the table for months if not years, your inevitable conclusion will be that it is completely irreconcilable with 5e.
>>97851293There's a lot in there that's relevant to any game you run, and a lot that's specific to 1e. And a lot of polearms. In any event, it's worth a careful going over or three.

>>97851642>but they'll still be 5eWhich is a good thing, considering it's the best RPG and the most popular by far.

I don't know if anyone else does this, but I've psyoped myself into only making Jumps that I think I could survive as a first Jump. Like, if there's no durability perks or whatnot, so hard to find a reason to make it. It's kind of the Mass Effect problem where Shepard or Nathan Drake from Uncharted just wouldn't survive what they go through. They're extremely skilled, but in the case of Nathan his health is explicitly representative of his luck, not him actually taking damage. Other settings don't necessarily do that, so you have this often extremely capable character that by all rights should just die. I put too much thought into the actuality of settings for the types of settings I'm interested in. It's not productive.
>>97852118>I've psyoped myself into only making Jumps that I think I could survive as a first Jump.Fascinating. You've somehow found a way to make me even more contemptuous of you than I thought possible. I am only interested in making jumps that will give me a war that can end me, or set me free.
>>97852123
>>97852118I make jumps so I can use the jumps from settings that interest me. I'm not going to go out of my way to limit what I make jumps from. Makes no sense to me, just comes off as another way to procrastinate from the story.
Am I an autist for having my ascetic characters ask for small beers when they visit inns or taverns?
>>97850827What's the problem with that?
>>97850827Seems fine to me. On a unrelated note. The number one thing that made me quit playing mabinogi is that inventory and bank space was so artificially limited yet they would intentionally constantly have events, quest lines, and job paths, and literally every single mechanic in the game is designed to fill your inventory no matter what you do, and the only way to partially deal with it is buy more bags from the cash shop, ideally until your inventory is nothing but bags that are bound exclusively to your character. Then a huge bulk of your time is spent managing inventory space rather than playing the fucking game.I think a time when two events were running at the same time that both flooded your inventory with random borderline useless bullshit every 10 minutes made me finally snap and quit.Talk about building a problem then selling the solution.
