Spur of the moment idea I had. I'm going to give it a santa hat and a scarf, should I give the scarf a texture or would it not matter too much at a small scale?
>>94682806>should I give the scarf a textureNo need.
I really like how those printed plants look in combination with green tufts. Now all thats left is to neaten up the rims of the bases with another layer of brown and my last minis of 2024 will be done.
Assembled all my quar dudes, thanks for the extras, santa.Time to prime then paint.
>>94682523understoodordered the matt medium thanks

>>94682933I want to emphasize that the other anon mentioned ink rather than paint. That's also what I use. If you have access to an art store, you can pick up everything you need for DIY washes. I use Liquitex brand for everything, along with bottles from Amazon. Up front it costs a little bit even with cheap materials but you can make a life time of wash. Black is easiest, you can slightly tint it (Nuln has a slight brown to it). Browns take a little experimentation until you get what you want with colors.
>>94683050Godamnit
>>94682806If you want texture do it with stippling, if you try sculpting it at that scale it will look like shit.

Anyone knows where to print custom decals with white in the EU? local printshop doesn't do white and the only ones I found online are expensive
Second red corsair WIPI realised while painting that I could easily batch paint at least five of these dudes at the time, but I have no space so one at the time it is.I am also using the excuse of red corsairs being pirates with no standard equipment to play different combinations of red, black and gold
>>94683120Pretty clean anon, good going so far.
Has anyone here ever painted contrast paints onto sterling silver without priming? I'm doing some kit bashing and I am wanting to paint a Phoenix feather that is made out of silver. I want to color it but I want it to still look like it's made out of shiny metal.
>>94683175mix the contrast with the silver and then paint with it
>>94683267I think you misunderstood. I am wanting to paint an object made of sterling silver.
>>94683283Paint is not gonna spread over smooth metal without some primer.
>>94683120>I am also using the excuse of red corsairs being pirates with no standard equipment to play different combinations of red, black and goldHonestly best part about CSM. Make every dude his own.
>>94683283oh i thought it was some branded paint namethis >>94683326there's transparent primers for plastic at least, maybe for metals too, but in ny case clean it well before painting, also since its silver you can test different things and strip ithonestly I would mold the part with bluestuff to make a copy instead, sounds like an expensive kitbash
>>94683065Good point.
>>94682933>>94683054in the absence of ink, you can use paint, you will need to add comparatively more paint and less of the medium
Finished this guy. Really happy with how the nmm turned out. Hope to do a full nmm marine soon
>>94683508Looks really good, anon. Be careful though, if you did 1 more gradient on the sword it would have been too much and meme worthy.Did you do the airbrushing masking for the sword, or layers/glazes?
>>94683534I still think it would look better with 2 gradients per side but with more spread out transitions. Solid work on everything else though
>>94683534Neither, it was all done with oil paints

I fuckin love painting Orks man. Green truly is best.
>>94684257i love how easy it is to get nice alt tones in green, add a little brown, or blue for massive changes in skin color, if it was on pink skin it would look like they had an terrible skin disorder, but on orcs they just look like different green.
>>94684301>if it was on pink skin it would look like they had an terrible skin disorderIt's the uncanny valley effect, which green (or whatever) skin avoids by being completely off.
>>94684162That's rad. Very nice eye.
What’s a good foldable light box?
>>94684454Isn't one. You need a full photography studio to get proper lighting.
SQUIQITUP
>>94684454I got mine from aliexpress, cheapest one I could find that had leds on top and it's been working fine for me. You're still gonna need another light source to put in front of the box and that's where I'd consider spending more for a decent lamp
>>94684162The main eye looks so sick.
>>94683508Did you highlight with acrylics? And was it white or black primed?
>>94682698Did everyone get their gifts?
Working on a command tent and some jump off points. I'm pretty pleased with how the tent is coming along.
My airbrushed paint keeps coming out slightly speckled and with a bit of orange peel, even though it seems like I'm doing everything right. How can I tell what's the fault of user error and the fault of the airbrush or paints? For the record, this is what I have going on:>cheapo chinesium pistol-grip airbrush from bezomart (picrel), 3.0mm needle>compressor with tank, tested from 10 PSI all the way up to 30 PSI; 15 seemed to be the 'sweet spot' but still speckly>all paints were regular, non-airbrush Vallejo game and model colors, half a dozen ranging from light to dark>premixed airbrush sauce with thinner, flow improver, and retarder medium, all from Vallejo
>>94684841>Did everyone get their gifts? My present from OKC-anon arrived today. I'll have to let him know separately, as he confesses he doesn't get to browse WIP as often as he used to.

>>94685380It's concerning how much you've made this look like the b ox art. Are you a GW insider?

>>94685463Devlan Mud
>>94685629Not even an complaint, I didn't even really think it was possible to get stuff like GW box art. Figured it was editing magic.
>>94685666>Devlan mudYeah I got strong tone for that job. Some blogspot reviews of the stuff (or was it wordpress I'm thinking of) even say that ArmyPainter's strongtone is basically a remake of devlan mud colour-tone-wise.
>>94684945inspect it, check if the oppening on the nozzle cap is round and burr free, check that the nozzle is in the middle of the opening with a nice even ring gap around, check that the nozzle is also not crusty and the needle point is smooth and straightyou can fix burrs by sanding with some fine sandpaper or small file, don't worry if it loses the chrome it won't rust to shit (probably)if the nozzle is misaligned try unscrewing the cap a bit until its more centered, they usually have an o-ring so as long as it's sigthly compressed it won't unscrew itselftry water with a bit of ink to see if that atomizes properlyalso you usually don't need flow improver and retarder, a bit of thinner and a bit of flow improver (if any) should be enough, I use a mix of 8:2 thinner:flow and use that ~1:1 with the paint, different paints/colors need different dilution, no need to premix really, put the tinner in the cup first and then the paint and mix there with a brush, backflow a bit and you are golden
>>94684945Orange-peel tends to be that the paint has gotten a bit thick-ish before it hits the model, so it can't self-level out to smooth. Or it arrives in lumps, and gets to dry on the model too much for self-levelling before you add enough lumps to make a continuos film that can start levelling itself out.Speckling with noticeable blobs instead of a fine mist could be that the paint consistency is a bit too thick for the air pressure supplied, so the air flow is to weak to atomise the paint properly.Taken together not thinning the paint enough could cause the problem you have, but things like working distance, air pressure, and how much you blast on could all be part of it as well. Plus your airbrush likely ain't great, and I've never really been friends with Vallejo paint as far as airbrushing goes (though I haven't tried their thinner yet, maybe that's part of it, plus me having been spoiled rotten by things like Mr Paint's lacquers).
>>94684162>Gift exchange in new year's evemy family does that too
>>94686341>>94686388No burrs. The nozzle doesn't seem to be noticeably misaligned, but it might be very slightly, like half a millimeter. It's hard for me to tell, not sure if an offset that small would make a difference. I'll just keep playing around with settings, and maybe try to clean it again tomorrow. Overall, I'm kind of disappointed with the brush, it's pretty annoying to take apart and clean. It didn't come with a 0.2mm needle, either, so no detail work. And I agree about Vallejo; I tried spraying ProAcryl bright ivory last week and it went on like a dream. But that was using my old beater classic style brush which I only have a 0.5mm needle for and I stupidly didn't take notes on what settings or auxiliary materials I was using.Thank you for the help.
Does anyone know what colors were used to paint this model from mantic? Or what would be a close match to it?
>>94686823Looks like mainly white red and black
>>94686823Main colour looks like a dark sand paint was used with a brown wash over it. Guns look like an "off-black" paint was used and some grey highlights were made. Probably the same colours used for the visor with medium light green lenses. And a dark orange of course. They probably used ArmyPainter paints for the job as I remember armypainter Kings of war paint sets. Maybe email Mantic games if you're unsure. They're a smaller studio than Games Workshop and so there is a higher chance of you getting an actual answer. If in doubt refer to the above colour suggestions.

more work on this glottkin. Hey Anons, Santa here.with the Christmas season being done, and the vast majority of the gifts received at this point i want to thank all of you for participating and making this year one of the smoothest ones to organize. Despite the fact that the leafs postmen tried to sabotage the gift exchanges, only 3 out of 95 gifts are delayed at this point (not all from Canada tho). I think i have been in contact with everyone involved (Santa and Santee) in those cases. If not, please feel free to write me so i can double check. In addition, if, for some reason, i forgot about you, or you did not receive anything (gift or tracking number), now is the time to write me an email as well. Thanks again, have a good new year everyone, with plenty of hobby-time and hopefully until next year.
>>94687501Well if you haven't painted in a while I wouldn't go too crazy. Wings lend themselves really well to drybrushing because of all the texture so you could go with that. Can't really help you on the color because I don't know what you're trying to go for but colors that go with green are reds and reddish purples. You could also go with something neutral like cream or off white, your call
>>94688431thank you for taking the time to coordinate all this, anon
>>9468843195 gifts in total is a lot, not even every anon here participated.
>>94688459I'm assuming not even half of us participated which would mean there are actually a couple hundred people here. Which is kinda crazy cause I sometimes feel like there's like 10 people here
>>94688464im a non participant (australian, would hate to force someone to fork out the $40+ for shipping a card down here) but avid /wip/ poster, i assume most people are like me, posting a WIP when something goes particularly right (or funnily wrong) and just lurking and checking out the advice of other anons the rest of the time, but hanging out for secret santa as a very interesting time to check the thread more often, so even if theres a maximum of 200 around SS time, on average i assume thers like, 50 or so posters cycling in and out based on time available for painting, with the remaining lurking on and off.
>>94688464>there are actually a couple hundred people hereI thought it was just me...
>>94688464>>94688459>>94688484Its hard to say how many people actually lurk here on average and especially regularly. There is a solid "core" of Anons that participate in SS every year, and maybe 20-30% of new participants each time in addition to them. I would assume the number of people regularly posting something is far less than that. But you really should consider signing up next year, we desperately need more Aussies to make the exchanges a bit more interesting down there. (you can choose to not ship international if that is your concern). But its up to you of course.

What do you think constitutes dedicated practice at miniature painting? Be as specific as possible, without just saying 'paint a bunch of minis'
>>94689785Picking a specific skill or technique and really focusing on it for a paintjob, analyzing why its not going right and actively correct.
>>94689785Never really thought about that but I guess picking a reference picture of what you want to achieve and doing attempts at that would be good practice. This is assuming you have the necessary basics of course

>>94688431I'm really curious how all of this worked. Do you guys have a discord or something?
>>94690570Discord would remove the anonymity, so its just via email. Santa is the middleman. He collects all info and emails everyone a name and address along with a message of this person, usually stating their interest. Then you send a gift to that person and someone else sends one to you.
Working on more alpha legionModel air Steel is leagues better than what I had before. Now that the speedpaints gave the right effect I'm trying them out instead of the mix I made before. Really don't like how finicky they are compared to regular paints. Globbing them on and cleaning up excess and hoping it doesn't dry all uneven is an ordeal, and it's way harder to fix mistakes if it's even possible at all. If it looks bad after the next color I might just go back to how I did it on the middle guy.
>>94690591Sounds neat. I will definitely try to participate next year. I have been around this place for so long that I am horrified to give out my dox to anyone but it's changed so much.
>>94689904>>94689953Thanks>>94690348>>94690114It was actually rather easy to my surprise. The metal is based with Citadel Balthasar Gold > Washed with Agrax Earthshade > Drybrush Retributor ArmourAnd the Verdigris is 2:1 citadel Orruk Flesh with Tehnical Nihilakh Oxid, watered down and applies all over making sure no heavy pooling. Once that had tried, I applied thinned down Nihilakh Oxide very sparingly around the metal, and that's it. Contemplating whether I should do some silver edge highlights

I started to make molds out of blue stuff and trying to copy certain parts but I noticed two things that Im not sure how to solve:1) Each time and I really mean each time I do mold making process, despite using rather rigid boxes made out of lego blocks, mold is always slightly larger and as a result, have problems with fitting with box for re-casting one side (I do first half of mold twice to get better details). Sometimes BS mold appears to be slightly bent upward and as a results, parts casted near edges are slightly deformed. Anyone ran into similar problem and know solution?2) Some parts require me to drill holes for connecting them to other parts but I frequently ends up with them breaking, especially for 3mm or larger holes. I do make the holes in stepps like 1.5 - 2 - 2.5 - 3mm but it still happens. I mix miliput and GS in 50-50 ratio but Im unsure if I should make final mix more rubbery (aka more GS) or more stiff (more milliput).Sadly, I cant do sillicon molds due to having no workshop, just my room. Thanks for help.

Has anybody ever used a small filbert brush for base coating primed miniatures? Assuming size 2 filbert brushes are what the Citadel small base brush is.The Citadel medium base brush looks like a small filbert brush. Smallest size I can find from the webstores of shops in my area are size 2.
>>94691124Yes, I do it all the time. It's easy to quickly slap a basecoat with these. Also I don't know if I was unlucky or something but I got 2 of those citadel base brushes and both of them started fraying after like 2 or 3 minis. Really poor quality, even a cheap synthetic filbert lasts a lot longer.
Finished up this guy, wondering if I should try anymore touchups. Some feedback would be lovely
>>94691170Maybe it's the lighting but the fabric and hair feel rather flat. Even applying a wash in deeper recesses would help this a lot. Also this is just my opinion but red and burgundy don't go particularly well together. Other than that your choice of colors is good and everything is fairly neat. I like the crystal on his staff and the green gem is nice too
>>94691148My citadel base brush also fucking exploded very quickly. I don't really mind given it's purpose, but still, it's easily my worst brush by a shocking degree.
>>94691097/grog/ is about the old school stuff, not literally a grogsonly club. If you have interest in that topic, people into it are usually thrilled to show it to you. These threads are almost 100% people actively working on things they care about. 40kg has a high percentage of screaming children who mostly just care about screaming. It is what it is. Unrelated. >>94691236Thx for the feedback, I really appreciate it! I tried some lighter brushstrokes to give some depth and fabric feel, I'll go back and do it again, along with a glaze for the recesses. I agree the hair is flat. I think I'll keep the burgundy tho, as the idea was all red colors for the robe colors but I'll see if I can fix it
>>94691692Maybe the red/burgundy will work better when you add some more shading and highlights to it. Also like I've said, it was just my opinion
I know this isnt really WIP related...but does anyone know where I can buy some models of Block War that are ready for primer/painting. I really dont want to go through the process of cleaning resin models just for 1 set of minis...

>>94692258>>94692353Nice advice, I found a guy selling 3D prints of both factions...now for cleaning minis.Ive seen pictures of some people using fancy equipment such as ultra-sonic cleaners...and some people just using warm water+soap. Any advice from those who have worked with resin models on the best way to prepare them for priming?
>>94692540nobody sells uncured resin models
>>94692540Warm water + soap + old toothbrush + gentle scrubbing Don't overthink it, you're just getting release agent off. You're only going to mess it up if the water is hot enough to bend the resin or if you drop little bits down the drain.
>>94692540Use soap and water, as you would any other miniature. The people you've seen using cleaning equipment on printed parts are stripping freshly printed minis of excess resin as part of the curing stage. You don't need to worry about that by the time they reach you. Most printers aren't using water washable resin anyway, since it's more expensive on average than the alcohol washable stuff, so you can soak them all you want and you won't damage anything.
wip helbrute conversion, just putting on some finishing touches, i exposed his body partly because of practical reasons; the plate that covers it was full of aquila that were embedded in a way that it would be hard to remove. but having his body exposed made the punishment of the helbrute more explicit. as a contrast to the vanilla model's campaign markings, i thought having chaos gibberish runes on the front plate would look awesome - in my mind they are the crimes of the imprisoned marine and what he did to deserve this fate
>>94692686lets see if i can get him rightside up
>>94692578>>94692592>>94692607Thanks guys...I was worried I might have to buy some fancy equipment. <3Ill post my models when I get them in 2 weeks. Plan on doing some Advance War themes on the models.
>>94692702Very cool anon, love the fluff too. Is the sculpt on the shoulder a cast? Or freehand sculpt?
>>94692998>Is the sculpt on the shoulder a cast?thanks anon. nope not a cast, in the chaos land raider box there are a bunch of these small rectangles of hellish imagery that don't really have anywhere obvious to go, just about fit perfect for this project
Anon - to call this gift generous and perfect would be an understatement almost to a level of insult. The hand drawn card with such a fun combination of our little mascot alongside all the minis (including a little Johnny) is just all perfect. The snacks are quite good too so far! I apologize for the lighting, my hobby lamp finally died on me. Bless you and I hope you have an amazing year. Will post the card below.

Anyone have advice for painting stuff at slightly larger scales than the usual Warhammer stuff? I've painted my share of minis but I got a 3d printer recently and want to try painting some 75mm and 120mm scale models, but not really sure how much the techniques of mini painting transfer to larger surfaces. Like are washes still useful or do I need to paint shading and stuff in manually for it to look better? Will contrasts work or are the surfaces going to be too large for them to settle in the right places like they do on smaller scale stuff?Just any kind of beginner figure/statue painting advice would be appreciated.
okay, They all have arms now. I'm working on putting a slung rifle on the vox caster and the guy in the middle.
Working on some Ogres. This is the general look at far. It's greener than I intended, but it's grown on me. I'm trying to figure out what to do with the gut plates. I want to avoid metallics as much as possible, and the colouring is rather muted so far, so maybe something brighter to stand out? Maybe red, and have it be an army theme thing?Still a lot of work to do before I need to decide, at least. Still can't take a picture, obviously, but I assure you it looks less shit in person.
>>94693126Based Baccano! poster.
>>94688431I was hoping that my giftee would post theirs by now but I'm going to go ahead and post the card I gave them if we're officially done.
>>94693989Added to the imgur album! Hopefully, we'll hear from your giftee in the weeks to come.
>>94693880You will be shading manually. Washes and contrast don't translate well to larger scales. I recommend you watch this video from Cult of Paint to get a sense of how it works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CR9JXglfMdI. The Deorgard minis are 54mm so a little smaller, but you'll get the gist.I would recommend trying some skin or NMM on a larger scale bust to start with. Lay down a dark tone and keep layering and glazing up from there. Just a simple triad (or even a light and a dark like in the video above) go a long way. If you don't have a wet palette already, I would get one. Stick with it and you will become a god at glazing - plus, you can translate those skills to smaller scale minis too. Painting larger minis really honed in my transitions, so my power swords looked awesome once I got back into painting Warhammer.
Trying something new today. Want to make some terrain for frostrgrave but I've never done it before. Figured I could start with some cardboard frames and glue foam bricks to it or something, so we'll see how that goes.

Got a bottle of pic related for SS… and I gotta say… why is every other white so dogshit compared to this stuff? Are other brands sandbagging us with cheap pigments or something? I have favorites from all the major paint lines… but how is one brand making a color 10x better than the next best option?
>>94694940All I know for sure is that it's fucking shameful that paint of all things isn't a solved problem in the year of our lord 2024.
>>94694940I'm slowly just using pro acryl for everything now. I hate their bottles but their paint is great
>>94694984It's insane that MH managed to make the best hobby paints (unless you're a pro kimera user or something) and then decided to put them in the weirdest fucking bottles ever. You know they know they fucked up because they have 2 god damned alternative lids you can buy.I'm pretty sure they are going through their existing stock of lids and then they're going to change the default to one of the alternative lids - probably the dropper since it sticks with the brand look they've developed.
>>94694984Happy it's not just me. I used the white but have to scrape it on my paper towel every single time I'm done or it develops an annoying crust

I'll finish the other 9 out tomorrow, and then do a minimum of 5 at a time on all other multi-model units until I'm done.
>>94695061I agree, but come on. It's necrons. they're like 3 paints. Painting each miniature to completion basically is batch painting.

>>94694940Isn't it just the same as every artist pure undiluted titanium white paint? While other brands are just decided to thinned down their white for some reason
So i seen some people shilling something called texture palette for dry brushing, is this thing actually better than kitchen towel?
>>94695233It's shit
>>94695233The idea is to get rid of paint without getting rid of moisture. Kitchen towel dries out the paint, leaving a dustier looking finish.
>>94695288PS: You don't need a palette though, anything textured will work.

>>94695312So do i need to prime the silicone pad first or just go ham on it? This pad is quite flimsy though, originally, i used it for cleaning makeup brush

>mfw I just wanted to paint little dudes to play with a buddy>now I have a mini photo studio what is this bullshitstill fiddling with the camera settings
>>94695969>still fiddling with the camera settingsThings you may already have heard about but which could help...1: Keep increasing the aperture number (ie shrinking the actual aperture size) until the best in-focus bits start loosing sharpness, and then dial back to where they were the sharpest. A smaller aperture (larger f-number) gives you more depth of focus, but too small and diffraction will start messing things up.2: Focus stacking. If you have a tripod for the camera you can take multiple pictures with the focus at different distance, then you can have Photoshop or some other such automatically combine the photos together using the sharpest part of each to "fake" a much better depth of focus.3: While we're at it, use some image editing program to crop, resize, fiddle with the white balance and such as needed.
>>94695233It can be useful to get the exact level of coverage for a particular texture, other than that it’s retarded. You can make one with any random pieces of plastic and glue tho, so the opportunity cost isn’t much
>>94695969Is your lightbox DIY? What tutorial did you follow to make one if you did make one?

>>94696479>Lovely, smooth yellow and those freehands(I assume?) are well doneTy! Yellow paint is a pain in the ass, getting good gradients takes lots of layers. I'll be getting an airbrush as soon as I can, i get frustrated painting the big vehicle panels, specially with difficult pigments. Those are freehands yeah, good result but took lots of corrections
Managed to finish farsight before the end of the year. I wish two days and one night of diarrhoea on whoever designed the arm joints. All in all I feel like the whole is somehow less than the sum of its parts however. Not entirely happy>inb4 the base The original plan was for the suit to pop out of the dark and to have everything get less detailed and saturated the farther away from the blade. Does it look like I imagined it? Hell no! I will still honor my stupid idea from back then though.
Painted some minis I printed myself with an FDM printer. These are my second and third paint, so I imagine they are not that good. Had a blast painting them though.
>>94696717I liked the gap in the arm joints suggesting they're controlled by like magnetic or gravity fields or whatever. But it does make it impossible to paint without subassemblies and the way they affix on is kind of rough iirc.
>>94696725and the second one. I tried for a purple undertone but it becomes too prominent in bright light of the flash. Feel free to shit on them. I want to get better.
>>94696739Yeah the contact points are ass and getting them to stick there without falling of and spraying tamiya super thin over the finished paint job was nerve wracking
>>94696479>those brown-ish bonesThere's a bit of a thought there that when the raw bone got reshaped into the ossiarchs it was magically cemented into denser and tougher stuff than normal. Though of course that idea came after I thought "yep, this should look good".
>>94696746One thing that will help you with the "sharing your work" aspect is to not use flash photography. I use the same lamps I use for painting right now - a couple of fairly cheap daylight lamps off Amazon. The consistent lighting will help your camera adjust before you take the photo and not have them over-exposed.IMO FDM models are not great for learning to paint, but if they're what you have, nothing wrong with using them. Did you prime these models? I ask because the owl bear has what looks like visible filament in the recesses. Drybrushing would go a long way on the fur as a beginner, but it's hard on FDM because of the layer lines.
>>94696725close enough welcome back harambe
>>94696801Thanks for the advise anon. I actually don't have a good lighting aid at home, so something to get better lighting might be one of the better upgrades to get. Pic related is without flash. I primed them with a black primer, then painted a gray layer as a baselayer. The filament was white. The idea was to drybrush the brown on the gray baselayer, for a grayish brown, but I don't think it really works out well. The gray baselayer makes it look more like the brown didn't cover the coat properly. I need to work on my drybrush technique. I have some real minis as well, but went for the 3d-printed ones because it is not a big deal to mess them up.
>>94690890>>94694234> that shieldI chuckled, nice paintjob anon
I recently decided to switch from mecha models to miniatures because lacquer paints were just getting too difficult and expensive to get where I live (EU) and acrylics don't work that well for the usual workflow of mecha models. As a result I've got a lot of experience airbrushing but not much with a brush. Any tutorials/books/whatever you'd recommend to someone in my position?
>>94696883Okay, the grey base layer is probably what I was seeing then. Both of the lamps I use are no longer available on Amazon, but they're pretty generic. I know IKEA has some pretty good clamp-on desk lamps that accept standard bulbs, if you don't want to fiddle with LED that you can't switch out. I use an unusual table so I can't easily clamp them on, otherwise I'd be using them.>drybrush the brown onto the grey for a greyish brownI am by no means an expert here, but my general principle is going from dark & saturated to light and desaturated. If you want a grey-brown, I would start by basecoating completely with the brown, then doing two or three steps of mixing light grey into the brown on your palette to get lighter shades of grey-brown and drybrushing them over successively smaller areas. I unfortunately don't have any good fur examples on hand to show what I mean, but that's a pretty straightforward way to do it imo. A wash would also help with the recesses. For second and third minis they're solid, don't get me wrong.
>>94696894I honestly think you could watch some of Duncan Rhodes videos. He paints to a decent tabletop standard and he's very good at explaining stuff.

>>94696893fucking missed it lmao, nice one

>>94695479I don't have flesh wash, can i thin down something like basic skintone/dark flesh to make flesh wash?
If I'm going to be varnishing a mini with satin should I bother putting matte varnish on decals beforehand?
Hello /wip/, I received a starter painting kit with 3 space marine models and citadel paint. It said the minis are ready to paint, but the paint does not seem to stick, and I tried a few mixes of thinning the paint/straight from the pot. Should I get a can of primer spray paint for these? I dont have access to any Gamestores nearby, so what brands should I look for at the hardware store?
>>94697215Rust-oleum is probably your best bet, stocked pretty much universally at hardware stores. Make sure you buy primer and not paint+primer or you'll more likely gunk up your model. Honestly most brands will do just fine.
>>94697215I've been using white gesso mixed with a little black acrylic paint as a brush-on primer. I have to do a second coat some times, but it works very well. The main benefits are ease of purchase ( any art shop will have it) and it works in all weather (a necessity when you live in a place like Louisiana that gets two good spray priming days a year).
I honestly wonder what the fuck is wrong with me so everything I do turns into shit.Several people on YT shows videos where they do casts with blue stuff without any effort, without casting boxes, without pressing blocks and get perf CT copies each time. Meanwhile I keep trying to make molds and every single time I still get deformations, bubbles, etc. Why everyone else do hobby things without problems while I do nothing BUT problems?
>>94697434..you think social media is real?..you think someone is gonna upload their failures?
>>94697469Social media and mainstream youtube are literal brain cancer and should be avoided as much as possible at all times
>>94697469Some people do. I recall at least one guy who tried to use silicone moulds and fill them with melted sprues material - he fucked up few attempts but recorded all of them.
Was sculpting a few months back with some extremely uncooperative, ancient air dry clay. Ended up with this wrinkly little worm who was already half cured and wouldn't mix up properly, so I set him aside to dry and forgot about him for a bit before I remembered how cool (read as: Horrible) he looks.Disassembled a little robot dinosaur toy to give it some grafted on mechanical legs. A m8 had a build plate of 28mm bavarians fail with their heads/raised arms all smashed flat and dumped them on me, so I think I'll do a little something with one of the hussars and give it a fancy rider soon.Currently waiting for the pva the saddle cloth to set.
Is imperial fist yellow too opaque to airbrush over a gradient undercoat without fully covering it up?
>>94697744SirThat's a penis
>>94697765I have limited experience with airbrushing contrasts but from what I've tried they end up more opaque compared to when applied by brush. Maybe try thinning it down and doing selective coats or something
I saw lots of good painters using speedpaints like xpress colora when airbrushing, is there a specific reason behind that choice?
>>94694426Truly inescapable
>>94697765A yellow that's too opaque? That'd be a first.
>>94697893omfg

Do any of you guys collect Votann?I am tempted to buy the hearthkyn warriors and paint them
>>94698146The imperial fist? I use it unthinned, straight into the airbrush. I can recommand you get some plastic spoons so you can test out your gradients
>>94698124Both bottom ones > top rowRight > left
>>94697883Likely using the semi-transparent nature of contrast/SP to create a gradient. For stuff like fire, lighting, magic it’s an easy way to get a glaze like effect without hours of thinned out paint strokes.
>>94698124Bottom ones are sick but I’m gonna give my vote for bottom left. Double bat wings is a little too same-y and on-the-nose. But both are sick. Cool color scheme too. I’ve always liked the default NL scheme so I’ve never thought to look for other options, but I like what you chose
Not sure if I'm happy with how the highlights are turning out, thoughts? Also, what colors should I use for chipping? I saw several tutorials that say to sponge a dark color like brown and then a metallic, to make the chipping more interesting, but since this is black metal I don't know what to use instead.
>>94698374Maybe a bit too thick but I actually like how those look, gives a tron vibe. As for the chipping, I just sponge a metallic color onto, well, metallic parts and for something like cream(since I also paint admech) I do a dark brown that's a bit on the warmer side

>>94699120I'm assuming light in your house is warm from either sunlight or lightbulbs. This will cause the colors to look differently than in pictures which I'm assuming you take under a cold/white light.
>>94699120then use something lighter, get a dropper bottle, add half your mccragge blue to it, add a drop of white, or bluegrey (spacewolf?), at a time until its closer to what you imagine it.
>>94699120Macragge Blue's a really weird colour that seems to shift dramatically depending on the lighting, it's a really fucking weird shade but will look much better once you get the highlights on, just trust me bro
Need advice painting aged silver. Want to replicate Warcraft's Lich King armor on a mini, but don't have too much skill with metalics. Basically I want the armor to look like oxidized silver that has strong highlights of polished silver, and maybe also have somewhat of a dark-blue tint. I imagine black primer and heavy silver drybrush is the easiest way to start?
>>94699189well if you want a dark blue tint you could first hit it with a heavier drybrush of a dark blue of your choosing and then go over it with silver, I think? Or just paint it silver and wash it with something like drakenhof nightshade. Best way to color metallics is to use inks or speedpaints but I don't use those much so I can't tell you which one would work for oxidized silver.
>>94699189What you should do is find a painting of arthas that you like, look at the colors in that picture and where they are (and for what reason they are there), and then replicate that on a miniature.
>>94699063>>94699120T add to the guy asking about light, does your minis still look dull and desaturated in sunlight?
>>94697140You'll want to use a red or a purple
>>94699189Black primer, paint a dark metal colour, give it a blue or blueblack wash, drybrush a medium metal colour, light dry-brush or manual highlights with a very bright silver.
>>94699232When I see the sun again I will let you know.
>>94699241What do you mean by dark metal? I imagine medium would be like vallejo's chainmail or citadels leadbelcher, while dark would be something like that + black paint? Also I got some vallejo's metal medium, so maybe that + black paint?
>>94699189>oxidized silverDrybrushing silver over black works perfectly. Any tinting can glazed on after.
>>94699278Leadbelcher or similar should do for "dark" in this scenario.
>>94698326And using normal paints with the airbrush would likely cover too much?
sorry i could not keep my promise to paint this thing in 6 months motivation is a fickle mistress also happy new year /wip/ anons in advance
They're nearly finished.I think I stupidly copied a fungus for the champion guy that I thought looked cool but it was basically orange and just blended into the orangy brown wood, I should probably do a white/beige fungus.
>>94699490I think the scythes would use some more contrast if you're keeping them in a single color
>>94699542I don't disagree, but desu I tried like 3 different attempts at getting a ghostly purple look, and basically gave up after getting this one. Maybe I could white highlight some bits of them but beyond that I don't know what more I can do with them.
>>94699550White highlights are definetely a good idea, maybe darken the recesses a bit more too? That should do enough I think
>>94699446But it looks finished? Definitely playable, don't be upset!
>>94699661If a gw employee saw it they would smash it with their fist
>>94699661>But it looks finished?Come on anon, we can be supportive, but that's not helpful. Even if he's painting it white, that's not finished.
Did any anons taking part in the secret Santa this year get grinched or did we have a 100% successful exchange?
Will bird poop damage a brush? I cleaned it immediately
I bought baking paper but i have no idea how to make it into wet palette
>>94700183Watch a YouTube video
>>94700069i'd just get a new brush man unless it's a fancy one
Will lacquer varnishes fuck up acrylic inks
Well the paints here clearly werent thinned enough...First even kingdom death mini (painters scale, picked up alone on ebay for cheap) Also first time I've ever really had to paint a large amount of flesh. Hair and boots need finishing, but theres not a lot else I can do to this.
>>94700462You need to learn how to remove mould lines before you paint KDM minis. At least you got it cheap, but they need a lot of care and love. You can't paint them in an hour like a space marine or something. You gotta give them weeks of your time and go slowly.
>>94700462Holy shit, those fucking thighs. Also fix those moldlines before you go any further. They're ruining the silky smooth thighs.
>>94700243Not particularly, I'm just cheap
>>94700474Its more that she needed gaps filled rather than mould line removal, if you're talking about the thigs. Didnt have any liquid green stuff etc and just wanted to take a crack at her. The 'base' I'm leaving until I can fill in some even more heinous spaces.>>94700477See above. There's some pretty egregious gaps that I wasn't patient enough to fill in on her, rather than mould lines that needed removing. It'll do though as a first go for pinup models.
>>94700500>Its more that she needed gaps filled rather than mould line removal, if you're talking about the thigsYeah that's what I meant. You can't really work on them without plastic cement or some sort of putty. But yeah it's not nearly done. Just keep working away on it as you learn more. Keep it somewhere dust won't get to it and you can just keep coming back and applying your new skills.
>>94700537Once I'm done, she'll be nice to have around as a 'look how far youve come' model.I mostly do warhammer, and I'm sisters of battle, so mostly mini power armour, not huge tits and massive thighs, and not anywhere near so nice quality sculpts. This has been interesting, and terrifies me with the thought of actually buying the kingdom death box.
>>94700484bird crap is especially acidic and corrosive iirc so I'd just toss it
>>94700570Little fucker
>>94700183Put a thin wet sponge like the ones designed to replace dishcloths in a tupperware, put parchment paper cut to fit on top. Done. You could even use a stack of wet paper towels under the parchment paper, and use a plastic to go food box. The concept lends itself to cheap solutions. Just needs to be shallow and a big enough surface area to accommodate the paint you use in a typical session.I typically just put wet paper towels on a small plate with parchment on top when I have guest painters (read nephews) over and they want to hobby.
>>94700462>>94700500Not this guy but what sorts of things should I start out with if I eventually wanna mostly paint things like KDM or artist scale resin figures? Not interested in shit like Warhammer at all but that's what everyone always recommends for beginners.
>>94698903I'm finally starting to try and work out some kind of nadeshiko coded color scheme for this now that I've cleared up some other projects. I think this is a good start, but it needs some work. I think I like the red jacket at least, but something is off about the green and white.
