Spur of the moment idea I had. I'm going to give it a santa hat and a scarf, should I give the scarf a texture or would it not matter too much at a small scale?

I want to emphasize that the other anon mentioned ink rather than paint. That's also what I use. If you have access to an art store, you can pick up everything you need for DIY washes. I use Liquitex brand for everything, along with bottles from Amazon. Up front it costs a little bit even with cheap materials but you can make a life time of wash. Black is easiest, you can slightly tint it (Nuln has a slight brown to it). Browns take a little experimentation until you get what you want with colors.

Second red corsair WIP
I realised while painting that I could easily batch paint at least five of these dudes at the time, but I have no space so one at the time it is.
I am also using the excuse of red corsairs being pirates with no standard equipment to play different combinations of red, black and gold

Has anyone here ever painted contrast paints onto sterling silver without priming?
I'm doing some kit bashing and I am wanting to paint a Phoenix feather that is made out of silver. I want to color it but I want it to still look like it's made out of shiny metal.

Honestly best part about CSM. Make every dude his own.

this >>94683326

there's transparent primers for plastic at least, maybe for metals too, but in ny case clean it well before painting, also since its silver you can test different things and strip it

honestly I would mold the part with bluestuff to make a copy instead, sounds like an expensive kitbash

My airbrushed paint keeps coming out slightly speckled and with a bit of orange peel, even though it seems like I'm doing everything right. How can I tell what's the fault of user error and the fault of the airbrush or paints? For the record, this is what I have going on:
>cheapo chinesium pistol-grip airbrush from bezomart (picrel), 3.0mm needle
>compressor with tank, tested from 10 PSI all the way up to 30 PSI; 15 seemed to be the 'sweet spot' but still speckly
>all paints were regular, non-airbrush Vallejo game and model colors, half a dozen ranging from light to dark
>premixed airbrush sauce with thinner, flow improver, and retarder medium, all from Vallejo

inspect it, check if the oppening on the nozzle cap is round and burr free, check that the nozzle is in the middle of the opening with a nice even ring gap around, check that the nozzle is also not crusty and the needle point is smooth and straight

you can fix burrs by sanding with some fine sandpaper or small file, don't worry if it loses the chrome it won't rust to shit (probably)
if the nozzle is misaligned try unscrewing the cap a bit until its more centered, they usually have an o-ring so as long as it's sigthly compressed it won't unscrew itself

try water with a bit of ink to see if that atomizes properly
also you usually don't need flow improver and retarder, a bit of thinner and a bit of flow improver (if any) should be enough, I use a mix of 8:2 thinner:flow and use that ~1:1 with the paint, different paints/colors need different dilution, no need to premix really, put the tinner in the cup first and then the paint and mix there with a brush, backflow a bit and you are golden
>>
>>94684945
Orange-peel tends to be that the paint has gotten a bit thick-ish before it hits the model, so it can't self-level out to smooth. Or it arrives in lumps, and gets to dry on the model too much for self-levelling before you add enough lumps to make a continuos film that can start levelling itself out.
Speckling with noticeable blobs instead of a fine mist could be that the paint consistency is a bit too thick for the air pressure supplied, so the air flow is to weak to atomise the paint properly.
Taken together not thinning the paint enough could cause the problem you have, but things like working distance, air pressure, and how much you blast on could all be part of it as well. Plus your airbrush likely ain't great, and I've never really been friends with Vallejo paint as far as airbrushing goes (though I haven't tried their thinner yet, maybe that's part of it, plus me having been spoiled rotten by things like Mr Paint's lacquers).

No burrs. The nozzle doesn't seem to be noticeably misaligned, but it might be very slightly, like half a millimeter. It's hard for me to tell, not sure if an offset that small would make a difference. I'll just keep playing around with settings, and maybe try to clean it again tomorrow. Overall, I'm kind of disappointed with the brush, it's pretty annoying to take apart and clean. It didn't come with a 0.2mm needle, either, so no detail work.

And I agree about Vallejo; I tried spraying ProAcryl bright ivory last week and it went on like a dream. But that was using my old beater classic style brush which I only have a 0.5mm needle for and I stupidly didn't take notes on what settings or auxiliary materials I was using.

Thank you for the help.

Does anyone know what colors were used to paint this model from mantic? Or what would be a close match to it?
>>
>>94686823
Looks like mainly white red and black
>>
>>94686823
Main colour looks like a dark sand paint was used with a brown wash over it.
Guns look like an "off-black" paint was used and some grey highlights were made. Probably the same colours used for the visor with medium light green lenses.
And a dark orange of course.
They probably used ArmyPainter paints for the job as I remember armypainter Kings of war paint sets.
Maybe email Mantic games if you're unsure. They're a smaller studio than Games Workshop and so there is a higher chance of you getting an actual answer.
If in doubt refer to the above colour suggestions.

Hey Anons, Santa here.
with the Christmas season being done, and the vast majority of the gifts received at this point i want to thank all of you for participating and making this year one of the smoothest ones to organize.

Despite the fact that the leafs postmen tried to sabotage the gift exchanges, only 3 out of 95 gifts are delayed at this point (not all from Canada tho). I think i have been in contact with everyone involved (Santa and Santee) in those cases. If not, please feel free to write me so i can double check. In addition, if, for some reason, i forgot about you, or you did not receive anything (gift or tracking number), now is the time to write me an email as well.

Thanks again, have a good new year everyone, with plenty of hobby-time and hopefully until next year.
>>
>>94687501
Well if you haven't painted in a while I wouldn't go too crazy. Wings lend themselves really well to drybrushing because of all the texture so you could go with that. Can't really help you on the color because I don't know what you're trying to go for but colors that go with green are reds and reddish purples. You could also go with something neutral like cream or off white, your call
>>
>>94688431
thank you for taking the time to coordinate all this, anon
>>
>>94688431
95 gifts in total is a lot, not even every anon here participated.
>>
>>94688459
I'm assuming not even half of us participated which would mean there are actually a couple hundred people here. Which is kinda crazy cause I sometimes feel like there's like 10 people here
>>
>>94688464
im a non participant (australian, would hate to force someone to fork out the $40+ for shipping a card down here) but avid /wip/ poster, i assume most people are like me, posting a WIP when something goes particularly right (or funnily wrong) and just lurking and checking out the advice of other anons the rest of the time, but hanging out for secret santa as a very interesting time to check the thread more often, so even if theres a maximum of 200 around SS time, on average i assume thers like, 50 or so posters cycling in and out based on time available for painting, with the remaining lurking on and off.

Its hard to say how many people actually lurk here on average and especially regularly. There is a solid "core" of Anons that participate in SS every year, and maybe 20-30% of new participants each time in addition to them.

I would assume the number of people regularly posting something is far less than that.
But you really should consider signing up next year, we desperately need more Aussies to make the exchanges a bit more interesting down there. (you can choose to not ship international if that is your concern). But its up to you of course.

Pure white, very gently stipple white around the orbs if you want to do a glow effect and don't have an airbrush. Tint green with Tesseract Glow. Do multiple smooth layers on specific parts if you want the same effect on energy blades as in your picture.

What do you think constitutes dedicated practice at miniature painting? Be as specific as possible, without just saying 'paint a bunch of minis'

Never really thought about that but I guess picking a reference picture of what you want to achieve and doing attempts at that would be good practice. This is assuming you have the necessary basics of course

Model air Steel is leagues better than what I had before. Now that the speedpaints gave the right effect I'm trying them out instead of the mix I made before. Really don't like how finicky they are compared to regular paints. Globbing them on and cleaning up excess and hoping it doesn't dry all uneven is an ordeal, and it's way harder to fix mistakes if it's even possible at all. If it looks bad after the next color I might just go back to how I did it on the middle guy.

It was actually rather easy to my surprise.

The metal is based with Citadel Balthasar Gold > Washed with Agrax Earthshade > Drybrush Retributor Armour

And the Verdigris is 2:1 citadel Orruk Flesh with Tehnical Nihilakh Oxid, watered down and applies all over making sure no heavy pooling. Once that had tried, I applied thinned down Nihilakh Oxide very sparingly around the metal, and that's it.

Contemplating whether I should do some silver edge highlights

I started to make molds out of blue stuff and trying to copy certain parts but I noticed two things that Im not sure how to solve:

1) Each time and I really mean each time I do mold making process, despite using rather rigid boxes made out of lego blocks, mold is always slightly larger and as a result, have problems with fitting with box for re-casting one side (I do first half of mold twice to get better details). Sometimes BS mold appears to be slightly bent upward and as a results, parts casted near edges are slightly deformed. Anyone ran into similar problem and know solution?
2) Some parts require me to drill holes for connecting them to other parts but I frequently ends up with them breaking, especially for 3mm or larger holes. I do make the holes in stepps like 1.5 - 2 - 2.5 - 3mm but it still happens. I mix miliput and GS in 50-50 ratio but Im unsure if I should make final mix more rubbery (aka more GS) or more stiff (more milliput).

Sadly, I cant do sillicon molds due to having no workshop, just my room. Thanks for help.

Has anybody ever used a small filbert brush for base coating primed miniatures? Assuming size 2 filbert brushes are what the Citadel small base brush is.
The Citadel medium base brush looks like a small filbert brush. Smallest size I can find from the webstores of shops in my area are size 2.
>>
>>94691124
Yes, I do it all the time. It's easy to quickly slap a basecoat with these. Also I don't know if I was unlucky or something but I got 2 of those citadel base brushes and both of them started fraying after like 2 or 3 minis. Really poor quality, even a cheap synthetic filbert lasts a lot longer.

Maybe it's the lighting but the fabric and hair feel rather flat. Even applying a wash in deeper recesses would help this a lot. Nice advice, I found a guy selling 3D prints of both factions...now for cleaning minis.

Ive seen pictures of some people using fancy equipment such as ultra-sonic cleaners...and some people just using warm water+soap. Any advice from those who have worked with resin models on the best way to prepare them for priming?
>>
>>94692540
nobody sells uncured resin models
>>
>>94692540
Warm water + soap + old toothbrush + gentle scrubbing

Don't overthink it, you're just getting release agent off. You're only going to mess it up if the water is hot enough to bend the resin or if you drop little bits down the drain.
>>
>>94692540
Use soap and water, as you would any other miniature.
The people you've seen using cleaning equipment on printed parts are stripping freshly printed minis of excess resin as part of the curing stage. You don't need to worry about that by the time they reach you.
Most printers aren't using water washable resin anyway, since it's more expensive on average than the alcohol washable stuff, so you can soak them all you want and you won't damage anything.

wip helbrute conversion, just putting on some finishing touches, i exposed his body partly because of practical reasons; the plate that covers it was full of aquila that were embedded in a way that it would be hard to remove. but having his body exposed made the punishment of the helbrute more explicit. as a contrast to the vanilla model's campaign markings, i thought having chaos gibberish runes on the front plate would look awesome - in my mind they are the crimes of the imprisoned marine and what he did to deserve this fate

Anyone have advice for painting stuff at slightly larger scales than the usual Warhammer stuff? I've painted my share of minis but I got a 3d printer recently and want to try painting some 75mm and 120mm scale models, but not really sure how much the techniques of mini painting transfer to larger surfaces. Like are washes still useful or do I need to paint shading and stuff in manually for it to look better? Will contrasts work or are the surfaces going to be too large for them to settle in the right places like they do on smaller scale stuff?

Just any kind of beginner figure/statue painting advice would be appreciated.

You will be shading manually. Washes and contrast don't translate well to larger scales. I recommend you watch this video from Cult of Paint to get a sense of how it works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CR9JXglfMdI. The Deorgard minis are 54mm so a little smaller, but you'll get the gist.

I would recommend trying some skin or NMM on a larger scale bust to start with. Lay down a dark tone and keep layering and glazing up from there. Just a simple triad (or even a light and a dark like in the video above) go a long way. If you don't have a wet palette already, I would get one. Stick with it and you will become a god at glazing - plus, you can translate those skills to smaller scale minis too. Painting larger minis really honed in my transitions, so my power swords looked awesome once I got back into painting Warhammer.

There are 3 types of Etsy sellers:

>the ones who cure the models with supports still attached
>the ones who dont cure, or cure for 2 seconds so you get a sticky resin model, some with, some without supports
>the ones who do it properly, and clean and cure it so you can almost immediately assemble and prime it.

>still fiddling with the camera settings
Things you may already have heard about but which could help...
1: Keep increasing the aperture number (ie shrinking the actual aperture size) until the best in-focus bits start loosing sharpness, and then dial back to where they were the sharpest. A smaller aperture (larger f-number) gives you more depth of focus, but too small and diffraction will start messing things up.
2: Focus stacking. If you have a tripod for the camera you can take multiple pictures with the focus at different distance, then you can have Photoshop or some other such automatically combine the photos together using the sharpest part of each to "fake" a much better depth of focus.
3: While we're at it, use some image editing program to crop, resize, fiddle with the white balance and such as needed.

It can be useful to get the exact level of coverage for a particular texture, other than that it’s retarded. You can make one with any random pieces of plastic and glue tho, so the opportunity cost isn’t much

They don't have perfect QC - I got a bad bottle of that exact paint and it's worse than Citadel white paints. Almost a solid paste instead of, well, a liquid paint, and didn't take to thinning well. Haven't had a reason to order more from them so haven't replaced it yet. Rest of the PA stuff I have is great though.

There's a bit of a thought there that when the raw bone got reshaped into the ossiarchs it was magically cemented into denser and tougher stuff than normal. Though of course that idea came after I thought "yep, this should look good".
>>
>>94696746
One thing that will help you with the "sharing your work" aspect is to not use flash photography. I use the same lamps I use for painting right now - a couple of fairly cheap daylight lamps off Amazon. The consistent lighting will help your camera adjust before you take the photo and not have them over-exposed.
IMO FDM models are not great for learning to paint, but if they're what you have, nothing wrong with using them. Did you prime these models? I ask because the owl bear has what looks like visible filament in the recesses. Drybrushing would go a long way on the fur as a beginner, but it's hard on FDM because of the layer lines.

Thanks for the advise anon. I actually don't have a good lighting aid at home, so something to get better lighting might be one of the better upgrades to get. Pic related is without flash.
I primed them with a black primer, then painted a gray layer as a baselayer. The filament was white. The idea was to drybrush the brown on the gray baselayer, for a grayish brown, but I don't think it really works out well. The gray baselayer makes it look more like the brown didn't cover the coat properly. I need to work on my drybrush technique.
I have some real minis as well, but went for the 3d-printed ones because it is not a big deal to mess them up.

I recently decided to switch from mecha models to miniatures because lacquer paints were just getting too difficult and expensive to get where I live (EU) and acrylics don't work that well for the usual workflow of mecha models. As a result I've got a lot of experience airbrushing but not much with a brush. Any tutorials/books/whatever you'd recommend to someone in my position?
>>
>>94696883
Okay, the grey base layer is probably what I was seeing then.
Both of the lamps I use are no longer available on Amazon, but they're pretty generic. I know IKEA has some pretty good clamp-on desk lamps that accept standard bulbs, if you don't want to fiddle with LED that you can't switch out. I use an unusual table so I can't easily clamp them on, otherwise I'd be using them.
>drybrush the brown onto the grey for a greyish brown
I am by no means an expert here, but my general principle is going from dark & saturated to light and desaturated. If you want a grey-brown, I would start by basecoating completely with the brown, then doing two or three steps of mixing light grey into the brown on your palette to get lighter shades of grey-brown and drybrushing them over successively smaller areas. I unfortunately don't have any good fur examples on hand to show what I mean, but that's a pretty straightforward way to do it imo. A wash would also help with the recesses.
For second and third minis they're solid, don't get me wrong.

If I'm going to be varnishing a mini with satin should I bother putting matte varnish on decals beforehand?
>>
Hello /wip/,
I received a starter painting kit with 3 space marine models and citadel paint.
It said the minis are ready to paint, but the paint does not seem to stick, and I tried a few mixes of thinning the paint/straight from the pot.

Should I get a can of primer spray paint for these? I dont have access to any Gamestores nearby, so what brands should I look for at the hardware store?
>>
>>94697215
Rust-oleum is probably your best bet, stocked pretty much universally at hardware stores. Make sure you buy primer and not paint+primer or you'll more likely gunk up your model. Honestly most brands will do just fine.
>>
>>94697215
I've been using white gesso mixed with a little black acrylic paint as a brush-on primer. I have to do a second coat some times, but it works very well.
The main benefits are ease of purchase ( any art shop will have it) and it works in all weather (a necessity when you live in a place like Louisiana that gets two good spray priming days a year).
>>
I honestly wonder what the fuck is wrong with me so everything I do turns into shit.

Several people on YT shows videos where they do casts with blue stuff without any effort, without casting boxes, without pressing blocks and get perf CT copies each time. Meanwhile I keep trying to make molds and every single time I still get deformations, bubbles, etc. Why everyone else do hobby things without problems while I do nothing BUT problems?

Ended up with this wrinkly little worm who was already half cured and wouldn't mix up properly, so I set him aside to dry and forgot about him for a bit before I remembered how cool (read as: Horrible) he looks.
Disassembled a little robot dinosaur toy to give it some grafted on mechanical legs.

Need advice painting aged silver. Want to replicate Warcraft's Lich King armor on a mini, but don't have too much skill with metalics. Basically I want the armor to look like oxidized silver that has strong highlights of polished silver, and maybe also have somewhat of a dark-blue tint.

I imagine black primer and heavy silver drybrush is the easiest way to start?
>>
>>94699189
well if you want a dark blue tint you could first hit it with a heavier drybrush of a dark blue of your choosing and then go over it with silver, I think? Or just paint it silver and wash it with something like drakenhof nightshade. Best way to color metallics is to use inks or speedpaints but I don't use those much so I can't tell you which one would work for oxidized silver.
>>
>>94699189
What you should do is find a painting of arthas that you like, look at the colors in that picture and where they are (and for what reason they are there), and then replicate that on a miniature.

You need to learn how to remove mould lines before you paint KDM minis. At least you got it cheap, but they need a lot of care and love. You can't paint them in an hour like a space marine or something. You gotta give them weeks of your time and go slowly.

Holy shit, those fucking thighs.
Also fix those moldlines before you go any further. They're ruining the silky smooth thighs.

Not particularly, I'm just cheap

Its more that she needed gaps filled rather than mould line removal, if you're talking about the thigs. Didnt have any liquid green stuff etc and just wanted to take a crack at her. The 'base' I'm leaving until I can fill in some even more heinous spaces.

See above. There's some pretty egregious gaps that I wasn't patient enough to fill in on her, rather than mould lines that needed removing. It'll do though as a first go for pinup models.

Yeah that's what I meant. You can't really work on them without plastic cement or some sort of putty. But yeah it's not nearly done. Just keep working away on it as you learn more. Keep it somewhere dust won't get to it and you can just keep coming back and applying your new skills.

Once I'm done, she'll be nice to have around as a 'look how far youve come' model.

I mostly do warhammer, and I'm sisters of battle, so mostly mini power armour, not huge tits and massive thighs, and not anywhere near so nice quality sculpts. This has been interesting, and terrifies me with the thought of actually buying the kingdom death box.

Put a thin wet sponge like the ones designed to replace dishcloths in a tupperware, put parchment paper cut to fit on top. Done.
You could even use a stack of wet paper towels under the parchment paper, and use a plastic to go food box.
The concept lends itself to cheap solutions. Just needs to be shallow and a big enough surface area to accommodate the paint you use in a typical session.

I typically just put wet paper towels on a small plate with parchment on top when I have guest painters (read nephews) over and they want to hobby.

Not this guy but what sorts of things should I start out with if I eventually wanna mostly paint things like KDM or artist scale resin figures? Not interested in shit like Warhammer at all but that's what everyone always recommends for beginners.

I'm finally starting to try and work out some kind of nadeshiko coded color scheme for this now that I've cleared up some other projects. I think this is a good start, but it needs some work. I think I like the red jacket at least, but something is off about the green and white.
