Making good progress on my ghouls. You can see on the left one where I realised red was too strong for the irritated skin where the bone comes out so I mixed it with the skin tone for the others. Also slapped that pink that it made to knuckles, cheeks and stuff like that and it turned out pretty nice.
finished ethrac on the right today. Came out r nice IIDSSM.his brother otto was finished a few days ago and was also fun to do.
here they are on their younger brother, ghurk, in all their glory.I'm on break for a long time but I'm travelling 2 weeks from now and I don't think I'm going to bring my paints for the month I'll be seeing my family. I got 10 chaos cultists primed and ready for paint but I would only work on them to say that I finished my CSM combat patrol (like a symbolic thing). Batch painting doesnt sound fun right now so I might just do my harbinger of decay from the nurgle christmas box.
>>94765231Since the thread is so slow at the moment, here's another angle. I'm quite happy with how they look from above on the table. I've seen people paint the warhammer version of these ghouls where they paint the bones on the back as if they are entirely external like they are just wearing a ribcage on their back. To me I always figured they were supposed to be their own bones coming out of their skin though.
>>94765590>>94765611Been enjoying your progress on this one for a few threads now. Very nice. I can't imagine having the patience and organisational skills to paint something so big and detailed.
An anon a few threads back posted some guide on phone camera settings to get good photos. Anyone have that? I can't see it in the pastebin, and stupidly I thought nothing of it when he posted it but now I'm interested.
Been painting not-guardsmen all night. Not my best work, but they're the basic troops, so there isn't really a need to go all out.
>>94765816I think they still look good. Although chick on the left needs to close her visor because she's giving me the spooks.
>>94765820thanks for the kind words. For the supremely autistic, I'll post the recipe:>Primer: Army Painter Matt Black Spray, followed by painting the whole model in Vallejo Model Color Basalt Grey>Base Colors: Army Painter Abyssal Blue on pads and helmet, Army Painter Plate Mail Metal on weapon, Citadel Corvus Black on boots and backpack, Vallejo Model Color Flat Yellow on visor.>Shading: Citadel Drakenhof Nightshade on everything but weapons and visor, Nuln Oil on weapons, Seraphim Sepia on visor.

First time painting electro balls, pretty happy with the result even if some of the lightning is a bit chunky. Gonna do decals next, then an oil wash and finally some weathering on the metals. Here's a follow up from the last one, where I laid in the flesh with a peach. I put burnt umber & burnt sienna over them but they reactivated some of the blood red speed paint. Relatively happy with it regardless? Might do some little bloodier detailing and some tiny peach highlights
>>94766726Smoking and painting minis is very enjoyable as long as you don't overdo it. My wife and I usually share half a joint, paint for a few hours and then share the rest of the joint when we feel like taking a break.
I appear to have painted the ears a metallic colour. Surely this won't be an absolute pain in the ass to fix later on.

I think they should be more blue, with tiny tiny stark white lightnings. I dunno, I tend to over highlight everything and then wash it down and repeat that process ad nauseum until I get frustrated.

>>94765962We got more high winds today, stay safe friend.
>>94765793>>94765231Looking good, I like the red on the one guy for a little variation. That's the best part of little dudes like these, you can make them all slightly different and as long as you have some sort of unifying color (base skin tone here) it'll all look like it belongs together once done.

>>94766750>armorarmor is incubi darkness with black wash in the cracks and holes. the highlights were either VMC splinter or sybarite green mixed with the incubi darkness more and more as the highlight get's finer. >skinthe skin is contrast medium and guilliman flesh mixed about 50/50 over a corax white basecoat. you can drybrush it with an offwhite or glaze of layer over it as you wish. I just did some glazing/layering over the guilliman flesh/contrast medium coat with a deepkin flesh/bugman's glow mix. I like to add more of the lighter color as my highlights get lighter whch is what I did for the skin. I use a LOT of berzerker bloodshade for nurgle guys. it's a bloody dark red wash, whereas carroburg crimson is more magenta. carroburg crimson was used for the intestine hose, as well as for many folds and crevices in his fat since it looks more like bruising and meshes better with bugman's glow so the transitions are smoother.berzerker bloodshade was used on all the boils and pieces of exposed flesh. because it is more red, it fits better with the boil colors. the boils are just VMC fiery orange with bloodshade over it, then mix the orange with yellow and dot the washed boil, then do a final dot on top of that with ice yellow or pure yellow or offwhite, etc to look like it's ready to pop. >>94765798thanks. >>94767364Yeah that fucks.
>>94767408How do you forget something like that? You need to stop drinking from plastic bottles.
>>94767393Thanks, these are super relaxing to paint compared to the other minis i did recently
>>94767408When I came back to the hobby 2 years ago I forgot you're supposed to do short bursts when using a rattlecan. I just pushed the thingy on top and sprayed so much it pretty much clogged all detail. Lesson learned though, dunk these guys in IPA, strip and reprime. At least you didn't put any actual effort into them yet, so that's something
>>94767543I live in an area that is too humid for half the year and too cold the other half. Needing to use a rattlecan / airbrush is a gigantic psyop by Big Rattlecan. I brush prime all my minis with random junk paint that is usually 50% water and I carry my minis around in my pockets when I'm going to the LGS. Nothing chips.
>>94767653how many and how big pockets you have

>>94767786Same. They're pretty tough to paint at larger scales to be honest. Good practice for smooth coats and painting actual details though.
>>94767832It's a guy that makes those pretty cute sculpts. His gobling were posted here a couple times. Very cute.>>94767955Oh the big mini is not from him though, it's picrel. I had to stop myself from getting even more. I can kinda see why people get into 3d printing now
How thin is thin enough?
>>94768157Till it smooths out on it's own, and no more.
>>94768157Applies smoothly but isn't runny

Duelist I finished. Always love how washes look particularly on parchment and burlap-y cream colored things. Adds so much depth.I like the black and yellow, but I think I might have a bit too much yellow in my warband, considering changing the undershirt to red.

So I finally decided to take the dive and get some miniatures. I may have gone a bit in the deep end choosing a chaos marine army, but out of everything I just think the World Eaters look the coolest. Still in the box, store had a decent deal on the WE combat patrol but the tools and paints seemed a bit on the pricy side compared to other places. Is there a best glue to use for putting these thing together? I have some gorilla glue but I don't want to use anything that would damage the models.
I recently picked up a bag of these horns that I wanted to use for a kit bashing project because they are the perfect size and shape I need but they are covered in this awful felt.Any ideas how I can strip it off? I have like 30 of them so I'm willing to experiment.
>>94769038There is plastic glue and super glue.Plastic glue melts the plastic parts together and creates a more powerful bond, superglue can be "forgiving" because if you fuck up you can break it apart. I also mention superglue because you need to use it for resin miniatures, which your models are not but if you expand into other companies or Forgeworld many are resin so PLASTIC glue doesn't work.Don't buy GW's glue, you can get cheaper from a local craft store or online.
>>94769038Welcome to the hobby. Use plastic glue (tamiya extra thin is popular) for plastic models and super glue for resin and for basing. I would suggest picking up something like this reaper beginners kit (this was the kit I useds) it comes with everything you need, including very decent instructions, to paint your first mini. The paints are trash, the models it comes with are not very good, and the brush is cheap, but what it does is teach you some really good fundamentals with very low pressure so you can fuck up before you start on something you actually want to paint.Bare Bones Learn to Paint Kit: Basic Techniques https://a.co/d/9BT8yq7
>>94765816>>94765820yeah the edge of her face needs a dark line to separate her from the helmet. she looks like she is fused to the suit right now.
>>94769101>Use plastic glue (tamiya extra thin is popular) for plastic models and super glue for resin and for basingI'd maybe add PVA glue to that?
>>94769038The gorilla glue - if it's the clear superglue in the small bottles, is fine. If it's the brown expanding foam stuff that is not a good option.
I'm paralyzed by indecision on how I want to base these Ultramoderns. I plan on making all kinds of terrain for them to play on and it'll trigger me when I play on some urban industrial table but all my minis are based on the sands of the Middle East or something. I should've went with clear acrylic bases. Any suggestions on generic basing methods that kinda mesh with various types of terrain?
>>94769038Plastic cement (Tamiya extra thin is pretty nice) is good not only because it weld but it also cleans up, so if you were scraping away mold lines and it came out dirty the cement will tidy it up. Like anon said superglue does have the advantage of being more undo-able but for monopose minis that doesn't matter as much which I end up preferring because I really hated working with superglue and it's usually just the torso and legs that are monoposeLook around for some nearby hobby or game stores, they'll all have different deals on paint and tools and maybe even minis. If you're doing chaos marines you'll be stuck doing a LOT of armor trims so I'd suggest getting some decent brushes that handle paint really well, I got these red sable brushes for 6 bucks that feel really nice even if they don't do fine tips at all. If you're scared of messing up your first minis you can get something like >>94769101 (if I could go back I wouldn't waste money on painting starter sets that I won't use most of though) or find your nearest GW store for the free minis they give to new people; they'll give you a free stormcast/space marine and the mini of the month if you ask.Check the videos in the OP and maybe a few other fundamentals videos and get/make a wet palette because it's a world of difference as I relearned when I was too lazy to set one up while trying to paint bases
>>94769040Freshly grown antlers are covered in velvet.Embrace this nature fact and incorporate it into your mini.
>>94769038People recommending tamiya extra thin plastic cement is great, if you can't find tamiya Mr. Hobby plastic cement is another great brand.
Still looking for some advice on painting models with latex body suits (i.e, assassinorum, inquisitors, ect.). Should highlights be blue instead of white? Should I do a layer of dark blue and then a black contrast up top? Not looking to invent the wheel but would be happy for some inspiration. (Pic is still being cleaned up, gaps filled, ect. Just wanted a pose for priming).
Do you really need steel agitator balls in your paints if youre using a vortex mixer? And if anon knows, could you recommend whatever vortex mixer works really well that you use? I know you can use vibrators, power tools etc... but I want something I can sit on my desk. I just got all my paints out of storage and theyre clumped as fuck.
>>94769791>Still looking for some advice on painting models with latex body suitsSorry I only use brushes.
>>94769815
>>94769791Depends on what you want the material to read as. If you want black latex you can do highlights of grey, blue, purple, even a dark green. Big thing will be to make the highlights stark in places to sell the reflective nature of latex with really deep shadows. As for process the best bet would be to take a test mini and see which works best, "manual" vs contrast to see which you prefer.
>>94769791as long as your surface is glossy it will read as latex. And dont use pure white unless you will glaze something over itt. Druchii enjoyer
>>94769791As someone who has never done that before I'd just do the contrast route and gloss it

>>94770922Thanks Anon! I appreciate it.The base material is one of the Geek Gaming Scenics base lines. I wanted my Vikings to look like they were standing on the beach at Lindisfarne. I went a bit overboard with the glue and dunking, though. What kind of wash do you suggest? I've been using agrax earthshade on clothing and nuln oil on armor. How do you store your tools and paintings? Do you have a box or something?
>>94771454Yeah. Random boxes. I have a cabinet I keep most of my minis in, some are on shelves or the table. A lot of my tools just live on my workspace.OCD is not one of my flaws.
>>94771379>The skin looks so smooth, neatThank you thank you. I hid the bad spots. It was a a bit of trial and error. When I was highlighting the transitions looked too blocky. When I started to run out of paint on my brush it looked perfect, so I just started removing most of the paint on the brush and slowing down which basically just ended up being glazing I guess. Hard transitions on models trigger me hard. I think I'll need to go back and darken some of the shadows on those though, but I think the skin is good enough to move on.

Picked up a brush for the first time, trying out different palettes for Talons and seeing if there's an effective means to have some gold showing under black. Application varied in ease (small brush?) with the contrasts, and there's some pooling apparent here and there. Perhaps I'm making Custodes more complicated than they should, but what they don't use will probably work great for the Sisters anyway. No highlights, but the gem was painted at least. And why is it a separate piece on the sprue?1/2
>>94773212Very rough attempt at trying weapon heads because I underestimated how long the paints took to try this time, trying to prime with grey, coherence to detail wasn't as much of a concern since I'm using spears. Mulled over a Vallejo gunmetal which went alright, experimented with a glossy blue which probably looks silly, and completely fucked up an attempt with fluorescent blue. Both the white and blue probably needed more time on the latter, guess I'll try again on the flipside tomorrow.2/2
Do I need to varnish my models after painting? Also can i vanish with brush? I don't have spray can or airbrush
>>94773234It's never a bad idea to varnish, especially if they're going to be handled. Brush application is fine, just use a very clean brush so your varnish isn't tinted and try to avoid letting it pool up.
>>94773256Do i need to thin the vanish with water like paint too? My flat vanish from some unknow brand look quite gooey
>>94773266It'll depend on the finish you're after (neat gloss varnish from the bottle might be alright for a gemstone or something similarly shiny), but if it's some random brand of varnish, I can't really give you a solid answer.Your varnish might be fine with water, or it might take a more dedicated acrylic thinner. Your best bet is going to be experimenting on some test pieces.
Dearest anon from Georgia,Your package arrived in Luxembourg yesterday and I got it today! It appears to have gone through the UK to get to me and I had to pay customs, so probably why it took a bit longer to arrive.Thank you so very much for your generosity! Still the best and durable as hell, no need for some fancy slender man shit lamp
>>94773384I double up, always. You want bright light but not too bright. I prefer having a long one and multiple other spot lights. Picrel are lights I have around my workspace. 1st is above my secondary work area, 2nd is above my primary work area, 3rd is what's aimed at the airbrush setup, 4th is my "lightbox".
>>94773384I also usually wear one of these while painting.
>>94773198Warm black oil wash would probably look good on this
>>94773444hell yeah brother! I've the same one
I have no idea how tf to paint this guy. I try not to just follow the boxart because I have less motivation to see my vision come to life when I'm painting. >>94773416Spotlights cast dark shadows, they're not good for painting.
>>94773384Hotel anon hereI have two ikea lamps at my home desk, one with a 2700k bulb and one with a a 3000k bulb. And that honeywell one I bring on the road. Both options offer enough light, although the ikea lamps don’t store very well. I guess it would depend on what kind of armature lamp you get, if you go that route. I think I marginally prefer my honeywell lamp, between the two.

Using white or black will desaturated your colours, which can be okay in certain situations when you wanna bring it down. Given latex is black I'd definitely lean towards a blue, or whatever colour the ambient lighting will pick up from the terrain, just not white except for the highest highlights. >>94768734Space marines always look like this: ònó>>94768157Depends on what kinda paint you're using and what you're doing. :3c>>94765611This is absolute insanity and I love it so much. >>94773528I dunno if they're always cheaper, but there's definitely different qualities of light when it comes to painting.
>>94773234>>94773266>do i need to varnish after painting? If you're going to be using it, transporting it, handling it, moving it, picking it up and inevitably dropping it, then yes you should varnish it with your preferred shine/finish and varnish brand. The paint will weather after a long time of handling it similar to a wooden cane. If you aren't going to be using and just want something to sit on your shelf, then you don't have much of a reason at all besides wanting a matte or satin or gloss finish over the model because you like the look. Still, I recommend you varnish it anyway in case it ever falls. If you apply something like streaking grime, oil washes, or want to apply a decal over a smooth surface, then you should apply gloss varnish beforhand to make the model smoother. Also some paint can get damaged by things like white spirit/mineral spirits and handling it while you're painting it (it's recommended that you try to not touch your model as you're painting it)>can I varnish with brush?Yes. vallejo sells it in little bottles. If you use vallejo xpress paints, DO NOT use their polyurethane varnish over that model or the xpress paint will start to tear and come off. Polyurethane varnish is much stronger than acrylic but harder on paints, unfortunately vallejo's xpress paints can't handle their own varnish. Citadel sells 'Ardcoat and Stormshield which are intended for brush application.

>>94766266I think the chicken legs and fat head look kind of silly but your paint job still looks great
>>94773565Oooh~. Pretty! That horseman model looks quite different than your picrel. The proximity of chainmail to cloak always makes me wanna lean towards a nice combo between those two. Perhaps a bronze with something like nithilak oxide (sp?), next to a blue or purple on the cloak? I'm getting kinda grim reaper vibes, so maybe something darker and more subdued than the bright green? (Could tie in the bronze verdigris on the bell & metallic bits on shield & barding?)Horses also scare me anon. They're big and can kick / bite. It's definitely an interesting model with a lot going on, but I'm sure you'll do just fine.

The angle you're showing will never be seen on the gameboard. When on the base, the mouth faces downward and takes a lot of effort to actually view. I would focus on making the fur and fleshy bits look nice. Also focus more on the face. I underestimated how important the face was on this one and wish I pushed it further. Are these the first minis you have painted? You _can_ move the lenses forward and backwards but it's still want 6~8" imo. I find that issue is pretty universal with these. Maybe you could grab one of those jeweler magnifying lamp things if you have an issue with that? I sometimes paint for 12+ hours a day so I make sure to change positions a fair bit and my desk is such that my arms arms propped up almost 90° from my torso so I'm not hunching while I hold my mini next to my face. >>94774084Looks great. I might put a little more of a darker red in some crevices, maybe try some clouding on the eyeballs instead of a pupil? Very well done for your first mini....picrel's (Dirty Down) verdigris, unsurprisingly, did not magically change colour overnight. Some of their paints take a _while_ to dry fully so I was hopeful. I put on 2~3 more coats of it on, wet brushed up the edges because it's lighter where it's thinner and reactivates with water, and then slapped on some burnt umber, and naphthol crimson ink on the inside edge of the cannon. This model needs a bunch of minor touch ups but it's otherwise done. First time I've tried to do this sorta "full patina" effect with the verdigris, a fur cloak, and fleshy strips. It was fun to paint. I hope you enjoyed the process! <3
Hello /tg/, /m/ anon here. I think you guys have more experience with hand painting, so I want to ask, how should I paint a emblem on a shield?I will paint over a lacquer paint layer, and I think I should sketch over it, but isn't the pencil lead layer be stuck under the paint? Also, I'm thinking I should use acryllics, is that right?
>>94774280Why not just use stencil? Gunpla handpainting is a pain in the ass with goddamn awful brush marks
>>94774298Not a bad idea, but there will be some parts that will be too complex to cut, so I was thinking that hand painting these details wold be better.

Plugged in an old ring light I found in the storage, crank It to the brightest setting and holy shit I can see everything now, including the sprue marks i missedProbably will get some magnification glasses as well now.
>>94774313Duncan has a technique for free handing that works fairly well.>get regular printer paper or scrap plastic>practice painting your emblem a few times at a large scale>once comfortable practice it a little smaller>repeat until you've shrunk your practice emblem down to the size you needLet's you practice the design and get comfortable painting it while you get it to the right size, all before you commit paint to the model.
>>94774426the technique is to practice? huh. what a revolutionary concept.I'm not gonna do that though.
>>94774414>>94774426Thanks, will try the method and after finishing it will post here.
>>94774396>raw format file>.jpgNope.And as a quick little heads up, 4chan doesn't let you post any raw image files, not even on /p/. Probably because internet browsers can't render them.
>>94774396If you're sending images derived from RAW photos they may not be saving or displaying with the right color profile and appearing washed out.I don't know if that's the issue you've been having with pixel apps but I've had it at least with my sony camera needing to make sure I change it to the standard color profile and be sure to embed that into the file when saving out to a jpg or it displays weirdly in most settings.

Wanted to try some ice bases using crackle medium and some depth. The result isn't bad, it's cool irl because you can see that there's depth to the ice into the base, but also this crackle medium kind of sucks. I might be able to figure it out but it doesn't adhere well and lifts from the resin underneath leaving white areas around a lot of the cracks, the lower layers I did some of them didn't even crack at all, and when they do the patter is kind of shitty. I think I learned some stuff, but it's a lot of effort and drying time to test this.
>>94774966The guy I bought from didn't even have the option to print anything other than 32mm so it's not that surprising. I did find some sculpts from different people that were made with 72mm in mind tho

>>94771776Cool idea, but it definitely won't work. Hydrodipping is good for stuff like helmets and guitar bodies, where it's a broad surface with few surface irregularities. A miniature is going to leave your transfer crumpled and ruined, if it can even smoothly adhere to enough of the surface, there's just not enough space to work with on anything that small.
Is there a way to dissolve super glue relatively cleanly? I have slotta miniatures attached to their bases that I want to remove but I'd rather not destroy the bases altogether. Freezing didn't work.

>>94775480>>94775496There are CA de-bonders (so less reactivation, more annihilation, the curing of cyanoacrylate doesn't seem terribly reversible) of varying formulations and effectiveness. Whether or not any specific one will spare the bases will have to be a matter of trial and terror.

Wondering how I should do the field of the shields on my wardens. In this collage, top left is the mini as it is now and below that I’ve filled in some colors in photoshop and made one with the field as it is and one with a blue field. Provided examples of my other units as well. A 3rd option I thought of that would be less work than doing straight blue fields but adding a bit more interest to it would be to do a second glaze of the shade I used for everything to darken the field but not entirely change the color. Input is appreciated.
>>94775867I think blue would work the best.
Got my cheapo airbrush kit in and fucked around with priming a spare model I had sitting around. How in the FUCK do you get paint from GW pots into the airbrush cup?
>>94775812I do.1. it's usually a good idea to drop in some thin white paint into recesses like that that are glowing. You can later wash them with a light blue but it's a good start.2. The biggest problem you have is that your blue is darker than the yellow it's supposed to be glowing around. When light is added to something it MUST get brighter. This is usually pretty straightforward, but can cause issues when doing OSL like effects with different colors because different colors have inherently different brightnesses. So if you had a black handle, a light blue might look right, but on a yellow handle that's inherently brighter than black, that same light blue will look too dark. The advanced version of this is taking into account how different colored light appears on different color surfaces (red under a blue or green light looks black/dark for example), but that's next level. To start, white wash in the recess of the holes, light blue (lighter than the yellow) glazed around the holes to make a bit of a 'glow', and then a brighter, almost white blue to edge highlight around the holes directly with a very thin highlight.
Throwing on some basecoatsI'm this close to tossing my entire vallejo collection, it feels like every brushstroke leave a small family of airbubbles that I need to attend to or it'll permanently dry unpopped because they never pop. Has anyone else had this experience and know a fix for it? How well does AP fanatic behave as an alternative?
>>94775812To look like a glow it has to be BRIGHTER than the surrounding area, you need a brighter green and then even maybe a pure white in the middle
>>94775899I don’t dislike the blue, but my issue with it is that unless I do a good bit of glazing on each, I’m gonna have a big, boring panel of flat color there. Which is why I came up with the compromise of the re-tinted metal.
>>94775947It’s something people have been reporting with the new Vallejo recipe. Basically shake your paints a lot less than you think and try not to stir them too hard/much on the palette.
>>94775926>>94775950Thanks all. I figured it out. I thinned down some bright white, put it in the crevices, then applied the light blue glaze. It looks a lot better now.
>>94775972Stirring might be the main issue, this color is a mix. It's both new and old and I've had it happen with their old ones too. Sucks cause I like how they feel straight out of the pot on the wet palette but airbubbles are an absolute dealbreaker to me

Use a pipette to get some water in, then suck it in and out a couple of tipes while stirring. Do it a couple of times until the water is clear then backwash to get more gunk out. >>94777441also also, if you use a wet palette your paint is going to separate on the palette overnight anyways and you're going to need to remix it with something that isn't a big ass machine. if you don't want to ruin your brushes mixing paint on your palette the metal sticks are bussin

>>94777984Not him, but I've gotten to a point where washes actively hinder me with certain things. I have way more control building up the layers by mixing paints, so for something like skin I hate using washes. I still use them but usually for things like fur and textiles or making TMM darker.

Whether it's teachers braying about calculators or video game challenges, people seem to think failing to avail themselves of the tools or materials pertinent to task is somehow a point of pride. Regardless, if anon is struggling to process mixing colors, learning about mediums at the same time is definitely too much.
This are my latest Skryre heroes. Here is the problem, I find the blue robe too striking and a bit boring, but the purple one not enough striking but more appropriated I guess ? So, my questions are :1. Suggestions to make the blue more interesting and/or less agressive ?2. Which one seems to be more ""appropriate"" for a clan of mad scientist rats high on evil plutonium ?
>>94778100Those are great anon. Now, I feel like blue is a better fit here. Purple/burgundy are usually associated with royalty and such so I don't find them particularly fitting for a crazy rat. I also don't think you need to particularly do anything for the blue either, it sells the battered look pretty well already
Is there an easy way to get that nice reddish brown dirt these guys are running on?
>>94778219Thanks anon, appreciating the feedback.I asked few friends too, it seems I'm the only one seeing that the blue one is "flawed" for some reason.
>>94778279That just looks like they've painted red onto their cracked earth technical paint. I tried that once. I think you can drybrush it or glaze it on fine.

>>94778020thats why you use cheap shit synthetic beater brushes for that task
Any ideas on how to give these shields a "leather cover" to make them smooth? Would greenstuff be good, or is something like air-drying clay better? I don't want to necessarily remove the metal supports/spines, but I do want to paint some patterns in the shields. Otherwise my option is to take some Early Imperial Romans' shields from Victrix and be done with it.
>>94778759Greenstuff's upside is that it's elasticity stops it from breaking easily, which is useful for things that stick out. For something like this however, a more brittle but easier to work with material like miliput is better.
>>94765071WHY HAS NO ONE MENTIONED THAT THE SILLY TYRANID ATTACK GAME HAS JOHNNY IN IT? It's not an exact copy of the old pose and requires some knifework to make it better than the default monopose, but it is pretty damn close! Enjoy this tutorial I just put together /wip/, happy new year!
>>94778759Greenstuff seems like it would be exactly the stuff for that. I see it used for capes, wraps and bandages and stuff. It'd make a good loose fitting leather cover for those that'd suit orcs. Like the other anon said though, if you just want to smooth the whole thing over, milliput would get in all the gaps and then you'd just sand it.
>>94774999I hate using materials that are beyond my ability to control how they turn out. I'm still terrified to slather streaking grime or black oil paint all over a model I paid $40 for. In your example, I've never had crackle medium experiments turn out looking any good at all either.
>>94776479How the fuck did you get such a clean checker board pattern on the shoulder pads?
>>94778809>>94778815Thanks, anons. I'll try with milliput first then. Ideally, I'd find a convex scutum with just a round boss in the middle -- EIR ones are too rectangular for my taste and the boss has a square shape, while Republican ones have the shield spine in the middle which I don't necessarily like for these orcs, and will fuck up my pattern (pic related).
>>94778759Milliput in the cracks?
>>94778827I like crackle paste.
maybe stupid question but given vallejo airbrush primer is acrylic would it lose its effect if i mixed a tiny bit of white paint into it to get a grey instead of the black it currently is? or would it be more forgiving since it's just polyurethane?
>>94778810i'm a Warhammer newfag, who's Johnny? I have the Tyranid Attack box actually cuz I was using it to build an Angels of Death killteam. Those Barnes & Noble board games aren't bad deals for minis, I also have the Lair of the Beast one and Blitzbowl. Blitzbowl is actually super fun too, not a bad game on its own at all
>>94778810>WHY HAS NO ONE MENTIONED THAT THE SILLY TYRANID ATTACK GAME HAS JOHNNY IN IT?Huh. I think I have three or four copies of that game around here, and at least one full set of the Series Four Heroes to boot (OKC-anon got me one last Christmas). I guess when Citadel fives you enough magazine bitz, reloading doesn't seem like such a big deal.Good on ya for the new tutorial! I'll put it in our MEGA.
>>94779008>Who's Johnny?https://1d6chan.miraheze.org/wiki/Johnny
>>94779008What's in the Tyranid attack box? Just the 5 marines?
>>94779049>What's in the Tyranid attack box? Just the 5 marines? No, you get a game board, cards, and some dice, too.Seriously, the Warhammer games GW makes for Barnes& Noble are usually pretty light on miniatures. Like the other Space Marine Adventures games (Labyrinth of the Necrons and Rise of the Orks), the only actual models you get are the Space Marines. The actions of the "enemies" are represented by tokens, cards, or chits. At least in the Space Marine Board Game, Lieutenant Titus had to face 20 Termagants and a pair or Ripper Swarms!
>>94779074I should mention if you want the Space Marine Heroes without buying blind boxes, the B&N games are the way to go.Labyrinth of the Necrons and its two supplements netted you 11 of the 13 Series One Heroes, including the hard-to-find Captain Thassarius,Rise of the Orks included five of the Series Two Heroes, including the heavy flamer model - the only one in Series Two that was not sold in blind boxes here in Burgerland.
>>94779044oh hell yeah, thanks for spooning. i haven't built my box yet, i'll have to build him as a johnny. that show was one of my favorites when i was a wee lad>>94779049the marines, the board, the cards and some dice like the other anon said. i bought it because at the time the starter set hadn't came out yet and I wanted an angels of death kill team. the tyranid attack box is just the space marine heroes series 4 without the captain and sniper, i already had a couple captains and eliminators from my 40k army
>>94779074>>94779096I was considering it a bit for the new heavy but I'm not hot on the bolter marine sculpts. I wish the 9th edition starter stuff was still around cause I'd like a few more assault marines knocking around and free up some bits for other things
Any tips for a total novice? I decided to take up sculpting minis for the new year. I have plenty experience drawing and have a decent grasp on anatomy already, what are some pitfals beginners tend to fall for?
>>94779123practicepractice practice practice practicehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwM2kMKgtdUit's the only waysculpt look stupid? that's fine. consider it skills under your belt. figure out why it looks stupid and then figure out how to fix it. you'll never make that same mistake again, or if you do you'll know what happened.
>>94779112>I was considering it a bit for the new heavy but I'm not hot on the bolter marine sculpts. It's worth noting that the model in Strike Force Justian who wields the Heavy Bolter is also wearing Gravis Armour; outside of Kill Team, he only works as an upgrade to squad of Heavy Intercessors.
>>94777049Palette shriveled up so I'm done for nowThink I'm going to pick up some proper skin tones and replace my brighter colors as a treatUnrelated but I tried mixing some ink into my blue and it turned out really nice so I'm pumped for that project
>>94779136Any particular exercises to train up my hands?
More blood or no
I think I've come to terms with the fact that unique color schemes are hampering my painting growth. I spend far too much time waffling about colors and not painting, where-as if I could just commit to painting individuals a known scheme I would be getting far more done by just trying to paint the best ultramarine or black templar, or the best whatever without even thinking about the overall quality of the color scheme. It would be one thing if I painted a whole army in some scheme and could be consistent, but I don't so that doesn't apply.ty for reading my blog.
>>94779558I just use inspired schemes from other things I'm into, have you tried that?
>>94779566I've done that, and I'm happy with some of the results, like one of my favorite minis is a Einhyr Champion painted sort of like a black templar and if I did a votann army I might keep that scheme up, but it's just unnecessary overhead on 1 off models I think, at least for me.
>>94779699I guess it just depends how quickly the application will come to you, like I can pick out the main 3 colors from the source material and then look at some official images to dream up a palette swap. For one offs at least something custom makes more sense, painting squads in predetermined scheme seems more typical
>>94779699NTA, but I don't see the point of painting in existing schemes. It's already been done, there's no point doing it again.
>>94779729the majority of my models are either just putting colors I think look good together but there's also some that have pre existing schemes where i want them to be a representation of that piece of lore. Like my WHFB orcs are a scheme i just like while my 2nd ed 40k stuff im painting all to be clan accurate for the flavor of the original lore and practically for the game since 2nd ed lets you take detatchments from any clan. That being said I don't really think one is better than the other, its whatever makes you happy or whats inspiring you to paint to begin with.
>>94779768Yeah my space marines gotta be blood angels but everything else I feel like I should make my own
Okay I think these guys are at the good enough phase. They can go into the pile to be based when I'm done.
>>94777984I use speedpaints and then highlight, which feels like cheating but is still fun.I just don't really like base painting, applying washes, then going over the the same areas again. It's not a really fun way to paint t b h. I could use washes in just the recessed areas but applying wash on the entire mini just darkens it and gives me less control
Progress
>>94780192That'll do for the tabletop. If you want to improve then aim for more contrast in skin and fabric.
>>94780290Nah
>>94778830Tamiya masking tape, a sharp scalpel, and airbrush spraying black over white.
>>94780683Did you need to do the thing where you spray white first to seal the edges of the tape?
>>94780818Nah, it's a good idea tho. But I tend to spray light coats of varnish on the model at certain points to seal things for weathering and working with enamels/oils and spirits. So the chequer pattern will seal that way.
took me 6 months to finish these little by little on the side and finally they can be hidden away in a dark cabinet corner for being so awful on the table
>>94781063If it is any consolation, they are gorgeous.
>>94780325b-b-b-based!
>>94779513I think I liked it more when it was all red? Like no skin only sinews? shrug? The area on the face is nice. What if you did a slight pink wash on #1 in that pic?>>94780232O-oh... Okay! Yeah. Maybe a slight pink wash in some of the crevices?>>94781063These aren't awful. They're definitely good enough! Looking at these models I can understand why they took you so long, each mini is very detailed and has...Orc skin, boar fur, two different sets of tusks, wood, several types of metal, etc. If you're content to leave them, I think that's a solid place to leave them. If you wanted a little bit more... I think one of the things that's taking away from these is that their metal armor is entirely orange? What if you did some aggressive metal chipping on their metal orange bits along some of the spikes & studs?
Just have to do some freehand micron pen markings then varnish 'em to complete.
Is Silly Putty the same as Blu-Tack? This stuff is good for masking, right?
Uhm Anyone know what is the recipe for brown anime skin?
>>94781437Ooh these are quite nice. Love the color gradient on the armor and the cacti spicing up the bases
>>94781155thank you>>94781345yeah they were a real chore and sometimes i didnt feel like touching them for months thank you for the suggestion but i think im leaving them like this for now, dont get me wrong im happy enough with paintjob but rulewise they wont be seeing any action anytime soon
Why do primers mostly only come in white, grey, black? Where can I get airbrush primers in red, pink, purple, blue etc?
>>94781437Looking good anon! Some quick edge highlights on the tippy top edges might help? But I know you're going for speed and they're already great! <3>>94781515What are you doing where either of these seem like a good idea? I've heard people talking about this but I've never understood it.
Can this be use for checker board pattern or eye dotting?
>>94781525No U ;)
>>94781554Vallejo has red, brown primer but i like Mr hobby surface primer more, better on airbrush
>>94781554I've said it before and I'll say it again. Primers are a meme. I've primed stuff with India ink and it works just fine, despite like, not even being "paint".
>>94781560Thanks! There are some drybrushed edge highlights, not showing up because of low light photos, will take brighter pics tomorrow after freehands. But ye, speed is the goal. Whole legs going neglected at this point lol.
>>94781584This is what confuses my. Primers are different from regular acrylic paints. But you're saying the first layer of whatever you use is a primer?Does that mean I can use this stuff?
>>94781579Those are lacquer, right? The Vallejo ones I'm using right now work well enough for my purposes but I've been meaning to try those. I'm kinda antsy about spraying them in my small apartment tho
Doing my first multi-piece mini. Should I paint parts separately, or build the whole thing first?
>>94781678For this one, would do in 3 pieces at least (chariot, ogor, and warthog)
>>94781345Oh I'm not the anon that painted it all sinewy. That said do you have any advice on what to do next aside cleaning up some messy spots? Kinda stumped on how to further improve it.
>>94781515I have no idea what silly putty is, but if it's a BluTac-knockoff then it should work for masking, yes.>>94781560>What are you doing where either of these seem like a good idea? I've heard people talking about this but I've never understood it.You use it instead of making tape for rounded shapes. If you're careful about things you may also be able to use them to get soft edged fields with very even and narrow transitions between colours.>>94781563A single of those strands for eyes perhaps, but I'm sceptical overall.>>94781554Even if your paint layers seem perfectly opaque they probably aren’t, and so the underlying primer colour will tint things a bit. This means neutral colours (ie the grey scale) is usually preferred for primer since that'll have the least amount of odd or unfortunate effects on the paints used on top.>>94781597There's no specific mix of chemicals that make a primer, so yes, you can use whatever as your primer. Now the primer has a job to do (help your main paints adhere to the mini, smooth over minor imperfections, and provide a uniformly coloured base to work from) so not everything will be a good primer.>>947816093M half-mask, particle and organic vapour filters. Remember to air things out a bit after painting before you take the mask off. If there is any real risk (if the guys down at the Polymer Chemistry lab can slosh acetone around like it's water without any real PPE...), that'll take care of it.
Seriously, whats wrong with this guy? Who styles himself like this and thinks thats okay? Is it Autism? Some other mental disorder?
>>94781904Seriously, whats wrong with this guy? Who posts retarded shit like this and thinks thats okay? Is it Autism? Some other mental disorder?
i love his channel and mustache
>>94781788Isn't Blu-Tack is pretty sticky and very hard to remove completely though? Will it damaging the paint job?
>>94781969I've never used, or even seen in person, the "real stuff". The stuff I'm using isn't horrible to get off, though you may have to use a ball of it to dab away some residue. It also isn't terribly harsh on the paint, most paints will do just fine and something like Tamiya masking tape is far more likely to take some paint with it when removed.
I primed my "lego" containers with a spray of black and then white from above. What i noticed is that i probably should glue the tarps in place with superglue, otherwise the napkins bend upwards due to the paint. But overall, i am very pleased with the current look of those former 2,50€ aliexpress containers.Next will be a variety of greens and greys for the tarps and some plain paints for the container sides, and then some rust effects.
>>94781588Specifically on Tau minis, I find the hard edges lend themselves to non drybrush highlights. Like, getting your brush fairly wet and then running the edge of the brush gently along a corner.>>94781597Yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying. I don't really understand _what_ people are doing that's chipping minis so badly? Like, don't drop them? Don't keep an entire army jumbling around in a bucket? And... Like... Paints gave really come a long way in the last 20~40 years. The techniques that ancient grogs swear by are long since irrelevant. The paint will hold itself to the mini, and if you're really worried about it, just varnish it once you're done. I paint professionally and sell jewelry, with that stuff I'll use a strong varnish because it's meant to be worn & jumbled against things.>>94781776Go look up what an eyeball looks like on an old corpse. They cloud, they don't have a visible pupil. Otherwise, I will commonly leave a mini within eyesight for a few weeks if I get to that spot, intentionally avoiding overworking it and trying to forget any of my original plans & ideas. New inspiration may strike at a later point. I think you could do tiny blotches of blood red ink on some spots of the back fur and brown skin, tying the underside's colours subtly into the topside's.At a certain point you're just done, try to ignore that wiggling feeling that it isn't good enough. You did well. >>94781788I never ever mask anything. It's fiddly, often doesn't work well, and by the time everything is said and done I could've just done it with a brush in the same amount of time or less. >>94781969>>94781984Yet another reason masking seems to be stupid. The only legitimate use case I can see being something like: >>94776479 where there is a giant (mostly) flat surface that you feel compelled to make into a checkerboard/stripes.
cont. from: >>94782106 (You) # wrt: maskingI should mention that I do use a putty knife while airbrushing to prevent overspray onto areas I don't want to paint. This is done by holding the airbrush in one hand, putting the mini on my turntable, and holding the putty knife in the other hand.
>>94782106>>94782186Dude, masking is good for some things and not good for other things. You know, like every fucking tool and technique ever. If you haven't gotten much use out of it then that simply tells us you haven't done much where it'd be useful, and if you think it not being universally useful makes it stupid then that tells us you've got your head up your arse. Go eat some laxatives and save the usefulness-speil for when anon gets around to telling us what it is he is thinking of doing with it.
>>94782244 Checkerboard patterns look stupid. Also, I use stencils.
>>94782106>Yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying. Can you explain your secrets with ink then? I sprayed mine with liquidtex white ink and let it dry for 1 or 2. Don't ask me how I spilled a drop of water on this mini I don't know, but the ink got activated and smeared off. Does it need to dry and cure for 48 hours?
>>94781904Comfy and wholesome
can cheap normal acrylic paint (not from vallejo or gw) destroy brushes?i bought an acrylic paint set including brushes but the included brushes are very low quality and are already hooked I thought of using the army painter brushes I have now but I'm scared that the paint could possibly be bad for the brushes
Valencianon, I finally saw your post. Glad customs finally got their thumb out of their collective asses. They stole a pretty nice pack of dried meats...I looked up the kinds of things that are hard to get where you are. Guess there's a reason why they're so rare; the cuntstoms people steal them all...
>>94782387Not inherently. The problem is that craft paints tend to be thick as fuck and therefore play out ferrules, especially if you let them dry, god forbid. Just made sure you're not using some kind of specialty crafting paint with built in glues and whatnot.
>>94782322Some paints will reactivate with water, don't use those as a basecoat. Uhh... Hm.I'd probably just roll with it and try to continue along? You can always use the cum jar if you feel like you're going to throw good money after bad.
>>94782387>Is paint bad for paintbrush? Can this become the new meme

>>94782567I dont have any green I truly like. It's a pretty hard color imo. Best base of the tried probably would be a green-tinted ochre, and those are pretty easy to find. Atom has some, AK others, etc. Maybe inks render better results but idk.
>>94782029When I was going to school for fine art, our teacher taught us that Spray Starch will essentially freeze fabrics in place. That way you dont need to worry about the folds in your fabrics changing/moving. Just spray the cloth, and it will freeze it in place. You can even pick it up, and it will stay in the exact same shape. You can find cans in most grocery stores next to the detergent.
>>94782567Never painted Ork skin but I got a couple of AKs green paints and they're absolutely lovely. I can imagine doing something like medium olive green - golden olive - pistachio for Orks

>>94782977That's so friggin' cool. I thought I read they needed airbrushing but this is definitely brush painted, eh? Do you see the colour shift effect when you wiggle it?
>>94782991Yeah this is brushed on, I’m too poor for an airbrush setup. It’s hard to capture the shimmering effect in a still image but yes it’s a dynamic coating and the light hits is great on the curvature of the blade

>>94778827>I'm still terrified to slather streaking grime or black oil paint all over a model I paid $40 forDifferent perspective, oil based paints can be wiped right off. If you are really concerned you can put a coat of gloss varnish on first to protect the previous layers of paint. If you gloss varnish you can use odorless mineral spirits to dampen (not soak) a brush or makeup sponge and take the oil/grime off completely, then let the spirits evaporate off the now clean model. Its just paint and plastic, you can always paint over it or worst case strip and redo. Nothing to get anxious or afraid over, we're here to have fun watching paint dry.
>>94778827What if you buy a bag of green army men or dinosaurs from the dollar store or a flea market? Also, I found Citadel crackle paint kinda sucked. I prefer Liquitex's crackle stuff.
>>94782998Would be interesting to see how much of the shine remains after a matte varnish. Could be fun if the effect is still there but subtle so you can use it as "shading", coming back with the paint on top of the varnish to highlight and get the full effect again.
