this guy is coming along nicely but I know I will have trouble highlighting he green armor and the scythe shaft. The scythe has very sloped and subtle edges that smooth out really subtley. and the armor is mostly flat panels but the uneven holes all over the armor gives me trouble. Am I supposed to drybrush it or just get my brush in there at a weird angle to get the entire edge of each hole?
I like my simple admech base test.
I got this nigga for christmas. Any tips for painting? I assume some sort of sub assembly would be best, not sure which areas.
>>94745132Idk about the specifics of the subassemblies, but I can say that the hooded, unhelmeted head is easily the best option.
>tfw acrylics from AK and metals from scale 75 is on its way
>>94745132My vote is for the winged helmet. I wish they hadn’t made him look so old, but still a great model
>>94745051RIP, big bro.
>>94745471Nah man, fuck the helmet, you need to see his face!
>>94745511Sorry, I should not have said the f-word.But my point stands, in my opinion, if you do have a "hero-character", a unique character, you should show him too. In this case for example, him being old is important for the storytelling!
>>94744993went back to painting after not picking a brush for 2 months. Rushed it quite a bit, so no excuse here, was stuck on them so i really want to try painting the other orks & grot I have. I don't really understand how to use the washes/nuln oil; and fuck it's hard to do eyes, even if it's just supposed to be dots; did a sloppy job even with my biggest brush still it's fun to paint, i'm glad I got into it, but i should have just went with kill team boxes
>>94745592Don't put yourself down bro, this looks really good! (except the eyes, haha)
>>94745511>>94745471>>94745586I think the helmet looks cool, but Azrael already has one just like it. Hooded face or hooded mask are what I'm gonna go for. Leaning face right now.
>>94745675HIM BEING OLD AS FUCK IS GENUINELY REALLY IMPORTANT AND HAS TO BE REPRESENTED ON THE MINIATURE BECAUSE IT IS THE SIGNATURE FEATURE OF LION
>>94745609yee still fairly happy with the result, from afar they don't look too bad and it's not like they are big champion unit. Still has quite a few splotches of paints and parts that haven't been painting enough to hide the initial white undercoat mistakes I won't repeat though>doing yellow first>gluing the figs to the base before putting said base>glueing parts that makes the torso hard to reach>putting textured paint on the rim
>>94745586>hero character shows face for storytelling I agree with the sentiment but disagree a little with your implementation. Dante for example, sure, him being old is part of his story… but also him covering his old face with the death mask of sanguinius is a massive part of his story. I think it could go either way there, depending on personal preference and lore you’re going for. With the DA I’d say the hood is very iconic to their chapter, but also the Lion revealing who he is and beginning to reunify the chapter is integral to the lore… so that could also go either way. Aesthetically I think I like the no-helmet option better… if I had to choose between the two hoods, but it’s your call obviously.
>>94745592Ork player here. Here's some tips:It seems like you're not thining your paints enough or not following the correct steps to take the paint from the pot to the mini. The way I do it:>Take the paint to a wet pallet>Dip the brush in some water, asses the amount of water and remove it on a papertowel if excessive>Mix the water on the brush with the paint on the palette, asses if paint is thin enough, people say "milky texture", whatever that means.>Take the paint to a wet spot on the papertowel, and remove excessive paint, roll the brush hairs on the papertowel so it shapes a pointy tip.>Paint the modelWashes should be used over a base coat so they pool on recesses and define volume on the model. You should paint the highlights after a wash to create more contrast between recesses and other areas. Here's the ork skin recipe I use, taken from last thread:>Base coat with Golden Olive or Deathguard Green>Wash with biel tan green>Glaze highlightsnwith a mix of base + biel tan green>Glaze highlights with base color>Glaze highlights with mix of base color + ogryn camo>Glaze highlights with ogryn camo>Nose and ears is a mix of ogryn camo + some purpleSmall details like eyes, teeth, and other stuff should be easy following the previous paint management steps I wrote. I use a size 2 brush for almost all the model, size 1 for details like teeth and eyes, size 0 for the finest details like pupils. Forget about smaller sizes, they do not hold enough paint and dry very quick. You should be able to paint almost anything with the tip of a bigger brush. Also, the finer the details, the less water should the brush hold. For example, to make the facial ork features pop, it's almost like drybrushing, you should take a lighter color, add very little water to the paint, remove almost all paint from the brush on a papertowel, then gently paint the mini perpendicular to the surface, that's how you get the fine details to pop. Hope this helps
>>94746052Correction, when i said perpendicular I wanted to say parallel. Also, forgot to say, specially when doing the fine details like the eyes. Hold your brush closest to the hairs, it will stop most shakiness. Aproach the eyes with the tip of the brush, yes, this time perpendicular to the surface, like you want to puncture it with a needle. In this case the brush should hold a bit of water so the paint transfers nicely from the tip of the brush to the model.
>>94745097I like it, but how did he lose his head?
Anyone got any tips or guides for sculpting bionic eyes onto heads?
>>94746246It was in the shop. He got it back. This is just a test base, they'll be on the normal sized ones. But I think it'll look good since the bases are so tiny too much extra will be a lot.
>>94745592honestly these aren't bad at all man. Advice I'll give:eyes are tough, I like using a toothpick for stablity. I also do eyes in giant batches, don't mind if I flub it a bit and then will go back and touch up around the eyes with green in batches because it's easier than trying to be percise with the redslap some nuln oil all over that metal and let it dry and see the results, I think you'll be pleased
>>94746436That's a huge amount of boyz
>>94744993Interesting visual element you gys might be interested in if making medieval-y stuff. Like Fantasy wargames or 40k. pic related is called a Signum manus. A form of crusaform based monogram used in the early middle ages for signatures and decrees. This is the one for Charlamagne. The dimond in the center represents the vowels, the letters around, the consonants. so its o it is K-A-R-O-L-V(u)-S KAROLUS. the main diamond is the "o" the downwards arrow is the "v" and the top half of the diamond and the V are together an "A".I find the geometic look of these cross signitures really apealing.could definetly see them being cool on shoulderpads and banners and stuff.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signum_manus

My girlfriend painted her first model and wanted me to share it here, be gentle.
>>94747164For a first model it's solidFeet/hands are a little flat and could probably get a washIt's very shiny which I am not a fan of but maybe that's lightingCould maybe brighten the blue wraps with a highlight but you could do it with just a dry brushBut these are minor quibbles for an otherwise table top ready model
>>94747164All in all pretty good. Painted "in the lines", blue and bronze are a classic color combo, and you can tell what it is at a distance. A good start, from here its just practice to get brush control, cleaning up the mold lines better, and experimenting with other colors to build contrast.
>>94747164And this is mine, I want to participate in a local competition for the first time, so I'm trying things out. I'm not aiming for any prizes, just that I don't embarrass myself. This is the first test modelBe harsh with this, tho I can already see many mistakes on the close-up photo. I rushed the lower legs.I know an Anon from here will participate with his Infinity models, so if you're here, tell me if this can pass for BQ or will I get laughed at.
>>94746480Jesus fucking Christ that's a huge army.
>>94747209>as you said the legs, just neaten up your pinwashing>double check mold lines, power claw and backpack have a couple that were missed>skin needs either a mid tone or highlights, looks a little flat right now but its going in the right direction>hair same thing but it looks battle ready>armor contrast can be amped up a bit if you want by adding some shadows, darker grey/blue/purple for some contrast if you want>bolter and base are probably the nicest/most consistent partsAgain painted in the lines and going in the right direction, at this point its just painting more to get better brush control and more confidence in your lines, highlights, and shadows.
>>94747209ok, since you asked>face is way too and monotone, it almost blends with the hair(which would also benefit from a highlight). You should at the very least shade it by adding a hint of a reddish tone(the color most flesh washes have) and highlight with a brighter skin tone>your edge highlights is general aren't very neat so that's one thing you might want to work on improving. That's on both the armor and metallics>same with shading, black around the rivets is very inconsistent, especially on the legs like you've mentioned>I don't know if that's the correct scheme for heresy space wolves but your midtone grey is really boring, it's way too neutral. There's a reason why greys used as main colors in miniatures usually have hints of other colors(usually blue)Overall I'd say this is tabletop ready but not above that. Don't know what level you're going against but I think a model should be of higher standard than tabletop to be worth submitting into a competition.
>>94747374too flat and monotone*
>>94747185>>94747199She's very happy you liked her bird.>>94747309>>94747374Thanks, you've pretty much confirmed everything I thought of my approach. I gotta get into blending and shit for the model to be up to standard.
Do citadel paints have some kind of gloss adatives? I tried out my buddies paints as usually I go for Vallejo. Painting seemed no different, but the end result of a simple basecoat looked weird. Feels like some mat varnish was applied along with the base paint. I already noticed when comparing our minis that Citadel washes definetly have some sort of varnish quality, as those seem to make the paintjob quite more resilient and also add a bit of a shine. Is it just the medium that Citadel is using?
>>94747560Do you use the new Vallejo paints? Because their new formulation is VERY matte, more so than any other brand. As for the washes, yes, after Citadel reformulated them some years back they all have a slightly glossy finish. Which is fine for metallics but pisses me off on everything else
I recently learned that Gunpla people like to use very fine tipped chisels to trace grooves along the recesses of their models for enamel pin washes to get extremely clean outlines on details and raised parts. Do you think this has any application for miniatures?
>>94746621You wouldn't recognise a fascist if one came up from behind and kicked you headfirst into an oven. Post models or kill yourself.
>>94747687That feels excessive but I guess gunpla bros have different types of autism. I wouldn't go through this trouble but I guess you could use that for some vehicles
>>94747717When you're spending more time on a kit purely for the sake of the kit the priorities change a bit. Most Warhammer players are making minis as part of a goal to play a game. But I'd say it has merit as a tool for modelers.
>>94747687I might get me one of those for making battle damage, looks cool. Using it for what you described does sound excessive, I agree. The recesses are already...recessed. If you want them more pronounced just wash it again? I don't get that
>come up with a recipe for some tile, mixed a couple paints together>looks good m8>take a break for a few days>resume>go to touch up some areas>palette ran out>forgot which paints I mixedheh new one'll be close enough....
>>94747760The modern fashion for Gunpla builds is "realistic" flat colors with minimal to no stylization or "painterly" touches, so they go for very thin, crisp recess shading lines both to maintain the "clean" appearance and to better suggest the sense of scale of the subject.
My Necron sheme will be black metal like pic related (not mine). What color should I paint the weapons? Just the same?

Slightly off-topic but I could use some help and you guys would know way more about this than /diy/>carved wooden decoy duck as a birthday gift for grandmother>happy with basic paint job>struggling badly with the eyesAny tips to make them look less…derpy/wonky? All the pics I’ve seen just show duck eyes as round. I’ve learned some tricks to try for the next one with glass beads and stuff but I think for this one I’m gonna stick to a basic paint job. Any tips welcome, I’m stuck
Richmond Anon, The rest of your gift arrived today, many thanks for the Fart Horn, I've painted up some of Warmonger's orks before and they're a blast. >>94748041I got the same one and it gave me mega fatigue from all the nose bridge pressure.
>>94748183The eyes are too close to the beak when they should be around the side of the head. If you want perfect circles, get some kind of cylinder shape, paint the circle and stamp it.
>>94747687I guess if something needed a really defined edge for some reason but for an entire mini? I'd jab it into my neck to end the suffering. I have a touch of the 'tism and that looks tedious to me.
>>94748409Depending on the complexity of the model, mecha fags do this shit for dozens or hundreds of hours

>>94748792I do it in my garage
>>94747920I've done some in black with weapons in Fluor Green from Vallejo. Looks neat
>>94747687I use mine to clean moldlines out of some hard to reach areas when it makes sense. I think in theory rescribing tau panels (or vehicles in general maybe) might be a good idea but I haven't done it, and trying to rescribe the little lines on the tau leg armor doesn't seem entierly realistic on the firewarrior sized guys.
>>94748792Do it at work, and blame the smell on the pest guy who came to spray for roaches.
>>94748800Is your garage not cold?
>>94748773If you're going to buy recasts buy GHS from TaobaoVolks is still better but Volks makes the best resin models period (quality depends on the age of the model, Volks had a significant increase in quality a few years ago)Our Treasure models are generally a lot more painful, lots of small parts and microbubbles everywhere

wip ruinstorm daemon sovereign for use in heresy. Not set on the face, I feel like it should be something else but not sure. Maybe a more beautiful head or mask to contrast with the rest of him being all monster. Also he feels very front heavy like he needs something on his back or tail end to balance him out. Thoughts?
>>94749410Adding too many features just turns it into a mess.
>>94748586>is 1/25th small enough to convert for 40k?Google up how big a Chevelle El Camino is, divide by 25. Expect to remove/replace basically all the detail work if you do convert it, as it'll likely be disproportionally fine for 40k stuff (then again, these ancient scale model kits tend to be a bit.. crude in places).
>>94747760>The recesses are already...recessed. If you want them more pronounced just wash it again? I don't get thatIf the panel lines are shallow, soft or otherwise poorly defined it can take quite a bit of work to get enough of the wash into them to make a solid and even line, without also staining the crap out of the surroundings. A deep and sharp groove will make sure the wash gets in there and stays in there as you clean up the surroundings.
>>94748792It's been 9 degrees (fahrenheit) where I live all week. I spray in my basement inside a cardboard box on a tarp, but I could spray outside if I wanted to. Just do it fast, it's not like your primer is going to instantly freeze the second you step outside lol. Bros what's an acceptable price for a 3d printed resin mini? >>94751561After copious impulse buying on Etsy, $5-8 is the price the website has standardized around for something like Twin Goddesses' level of detail. I don't consider a dollar this way or that way a ripoff, since this is way more than materials cost for someone who has a print setup going anyway, and you'll pay about equal for shipping.Be more concerned with your seller and reviews, do they sell things that break, resin timebombs that didn't cure on the inside, etc.

>>94750049>Marik MilitiaWould you believe ...?
>>94752259Oops heres a probably clearer picAnd now it looks much messier than I thought
>>94752259Minimal contrast. As in it appears to be primarily lighter tones. You could darken the waistclost with a wash, you could make the staff darker, just something for the eyes to lock on to.
>>94750782>found 3 large sealed pots each of old nuln, seraphim, and agrax while moving >think about selling them>know I'll likely never find them againI've been moving away from washes for a while now but you cant deny how useful they are in a pinch.
>>94752801There are much better options than those though. You could sell them and buy a few small tubes of oil paint instead for example.
Damn, 3d printing is neat. I can now ruin as many minis as I want while learning
>>94753082I wish I had somewhere to put a 3D printer but I don't want to turn my apartment into a gas chamber
Why did no one tell me that rattlecans contain among other things acetone and are literally melting my minis? My minis are ruined
>>94753166Because that's why the paint sticks to the minis? How much are you drowning your fucking minis in spray paint?
>>94753098Your appartment has windows, doesn't it? Maybe open it once in a while? Bathroom is a very good spot for a printer btw, as it often has a ventilation system installed already. Or if not, you are bound to open the window often anyway.
>>94753166Pics or it did not happen.
>>94753286I don't trust just opening a window to be quite enough to deal with resin fumes
>>94753291I can't see it, that doesn't mean the detail aren't melted, forever.
>>94753318The only way this could be a problem is if you sprayed it directly on the model and never let go. Alternatively, the detail is probably clogged.
>>94753098The trick is to use a primer, the paint will create a protective layer inside your lungs, preventing the resin from entering your bloodstream
>>94753166wait until you learn that acetone somehow chemically binds paint to plastic
My most recent
>>94753318NTA but are you actually insane? It's there to make the paint adhere to the material, that's what makes it a primer and not a paint. It won't melt the thing, that takes a 100% pure bath of the stuff and more than just a quick spray with a 40/60 mix.
>>94753357God, the old Battletech minis looked like ass. Great paint job, though.
I can feel a primer meltdown in the making so how about we just stop here, hmm?
>>94753166>he sprayed a reaper mini
>>94753313Then dont.
Some more dwarves! I did add another drybrush on the beard and the bone mask

I have shaky, sweaty hands and I'm still trying to figure things out. Picrel, my last two minis.Does anyone have any recommendations for metal miniatures that I can repeatedly paint and strip so I can git gud?
>>94753490>>94753379Thanks! Honestly I prefer the old battletech , this king crab design rules.
>>94753521Your blends are already a lot smoother than they were when you first started posting, good job anon. Looks very nice overall
Redid the elf as well if anyone would like to give a critique
>>94753608The new BT stuff certainly isn't perfect, but something about the old King Crab always bugged me. It looks more like a robot from an old pulp sci-fi magazine cover from the 1930s-50s. Totally wrong era of retro future for Battletech's late 70s-early 90s sci-fi action movie/gritty and violent military SF anime aesthetic.
Front side
>>94753683Agreed 100%, that's why I bought one to use (in 28/33mm scale) in my pulpy sci fi system lol. You nailed it on the head there.
I did not make it quite in time in Orktober (haha...), but I can proudly say I painted the Ork Kommando Kill Team!Even though they were admittedly a pain in the ass to paint, it was a great experience, because it is the first set I painted (if you don't count the odd mini here and there)
I've prepared a 2nd piece of not(!)Lego container terrain to prime when the snowstorm stops. >gluing it on a base made from plasticcard so i can use some texture paint and dust effects around the bottom more easily and blend the containers into the landscapeyes or no?

>>94753923
>>94754003There's a simple guide by GW in the OP mega on how to take pictures of your minis. Give it a try, I can't really see much here.
I have to say, this is easily my best work as of yet. I am extremely happy with how it turned out and used quite a lot of new and exciting techniques. With great effect if I may say so, the rich colors really shine through and I think I managed to capture the otherworldy feel quite well. What would you say? (Sorry, my camera can only do black and white pictures)

>>94754303Anon it sounds like you've got the depression.
Is pin washing worth it for guys in armor? Be it marines, chaos warriors or stormcasts? As I understand its mainly a historical technique for making panzers look realistically weathered. Does anyone have some examples of what it does on a more vibrant warhammer mini?
>>94754489Can you explain what you mean by pinwashing? Because I'm not sure we're on the same page here
>>94754513Using oil washes for extra-smooth and accurate recess shading
Made more solid progress on this slag.
>>94754536Ok, I just got confused by the historical technique part. Anyway, it works best on vehicles because those have clearly defined panels and rivets but you can absolutely do that on armored guys. All the recess shading on tuquoise parts on this guy >>94754097 was done with black enamel panel liner, which is close enough to an oil wash I guess? I could've been a bit neater but you get the idea. I feel like enamels/oils will just give you better definition because they're more opaque than acrylic washes
>>94754303I do this too. It's not depression, you're just a lazy asshole. Same. I mean maybe you are depressed but that doesn't matter as long as you have the intentions to do things. You need discipline. Force yourself to start next time and you'll be surprised how easy it is to keep going. This will also help your depression. Starting is the hardest part. Good part is that discipline is a habit, so the more you practice discipline the less you have to try and you'll no longer be forcing yourself to do things, you'll be going through your routine instead.Think of discipline as a skill. Nobody is born with a schedule. You have to build up to it. Don't be a slave to your whims, do the things you want to do even when you don't feel like it. You'll never regret forcing yourself to do something you know you'll enjoy.
>>94753521Good work on the freehand. Like the other anon said, I can see improvement. Keep on keepin' on. As far as the game, I love that unit. Go get some confirmed kills with that tag.
>>94753076>You could sell them and buy a few small tubes of oil paint instead for example.Exactly why I've been moving away from washes for a while lol.
>>94751867>>94752240Thanks! Yep, the Epic Basing cacti are elevating my speed sloppa paint jobs and I'm happy with that.

>>94755604Yeah I see it, I was just trying to follow how artworks usually use a greyish color. Looked again and some use a camo black so I might try that.
>>94755682oh my bad I didn't know this was an official scheme or anything, it's just what came to mind.

Loads of screaming Chinamen. The entire hoard including all the newly finished men from the backlog, and those with some touch ups. I should touch up a bunch of the others given how long ago I painted them, but I rather churn through the remaining pile first.
>>94756369;w;

>>94756805Still good, you failed at ruining it, anon. I am disappointed.
Just doing something relaxing and fun today. Figured I'd get my ghouls done but couldn't decide on a shade, so I went with 4 different ones. Base coat is Stormvermin Fur which is a dirty greeny-brown grey. From left to right:>Biel Tan Green>Athonian Camoshade>Seraphim Sepia>Reikland FleshshadeI think they all look pretty cool. Camoshade one is probably my favourite because it feels like the standard greeny rotting skin colour I wanted. But the others are gross in their own ways. Reikland fleshshade one will probably look the best when they are done because it's got a reddy hue to it that will look good when I highlight the skin.
>>94753910I like it, once painted up I think it'll look aces. Looking forward to seeing it done.
>>94754366That is a great eye, everything is starting to come together.
>>94757128ehhh... I think I'm done for tonight. Sorry anon. Maybe tomorrow night I'll ruin it?I was thinking about painting the cannon a patina copper/bronze or maybe tarnished gold? The cloth bits on the armour and sword I want to do like bloody flesh. Cape... I'm totally unsure.

These days when I go more than 2 or 3 without hobbying, I start to miss it. It's my primary hobby (aside from vidya which I consider more of a time killer). >>94757326>I think they need some washThat's literally what that is. It's the basecoat with 4 different washes before I start building up the skin.
>>94757275>>94757300>15 minute timerI know the model is inspired by Dark Souls + Elden Ring, but I think the red cape really fits that, especially with the dark silver and orange you did on the armour. Maybe paint the wrappings around the sword and cannon a brown or darker red so they're not redundant with the cape? If you want to keep it red that is.
My friend is creeping the thread after buying their first minis. Say something nice.
>>94757401niceu>>94757421Okay! What do you think about doing the cannon with the close side red and the far side a dark verdigris/patina colour? I'm just slightly worried about the model being too red.>>94757456Painting is fun! And remember: https://youtu.be/Gu8YiTeU9XU

>>94757456Paint your minis. They won't be perfect, just focus on trying something new every model.
>>94752638I think I couldnt make him more visually interesting except if I paint some outlandish color on him (since the model is also kind of boring) so thats it I guess. Will start on the loli or antelope for the next one
I can't seem to get stippling down at all. Is the paint supposed to be very thinned down? Regular paint? When I see videos of people doing it it always leaves this wonderfully textured look but when I do it it just looks like ugly, random strokes.
Motivation is high! Let us welcome our backlogs into the world of the painted...
>>94758115Take an old (or cheap) brush and cut down the bristles until you have a flat tip. The bristles need to be relatively short and somewhat uniform to get the right stiffness for stippling. When you get the paint on the brush, dab it a few times on a dry surface (but not a paper towel, as that will absorb too much moisture and leave the paint looking chalky) before using it on the model. Don't go directly from the paint pot/palette to the mini.Like all paint, you may need to do multiple thin layers to build up the look. Also, let it dry completely between layers, especially when you use a different color.
Finished this daemon prince and with it my daemons army
>>94758225I'll remember you, if you won't post at least one finished miniature every couple days I will find your house and shit in your paints
>>94758658Well done! >>94758678You're on, paint shitting anon. If I don't finish the army by February 1st I'll drink all my paints.
Went for hours without getting up on my boy Ethrac here. I couldn't put my brush down and just kept going. But I need some help. What colors should I make the hand and tentacle on the staff, the flaming skulls in his right hand, and the burning brazier on his back? For the flaming skulls I think the box art's Ghostly color looks good (I think it's hexwraith flame or something) but I don't have that contrast paint so I might try to make my own. For the flames I might go with green flames.>>94758115tau look likes absolute EbolAIDS to paint. all flat panels with hard lines and little depth. old tiny fiery warriors. Areas where the paint is too thick jut out like a coffee stain on a white shirt.
>>94758745this is what I meant by green flames. A master of possesion from a few months ago. this would go on Ethrac's back and i might make the brazier silver to help distinguish it from the skin.

Complete paint noob here, was thinking about picking some stuff up for painting some KDM minis. I've bought some paints before and painted some Zombicide ghosts, but nothing too complex. That was years ago before I realized I didn't really like Zombicide too much.Does anybody have any starter sets to recommend? I was looking at the wargaming fanatic sets like a pack of 50 or something, jewtube has been pushing those reviews on me after watching a bunch of painting videos and apparently they are pretty good? What do you guys think? What would you guys recommend?
Do you peeps use sanders to file away mouldlines? Seems much easier and comfortable than a knife to be honest
>>94759777 (checked)Starter sets are always a meme. There's always gonna be colors that you're never ever going to use and end up being wasted money. Just buy the paints you intend to use.
Painting around the chewy soul filling didn't take quite as long as I thought, but still quite a bit.
>>94759368Aw shit. I hope you stay safe and don't get hurt.
>>94759780no cutting is easier anc leaves cleaner surface unless you are working with pewteralso inb4 you will die instantly if you file resin of any kind even on top of a windy mountaintop
>>94759780Sometimes.
>>94759777As a beginner myself I'm ordering the basic starter from AK interactive and I'm going to learn mixing my own colors. It's a steep learning curve and you have to get out of your comfort zone, but pretty rewarding and will elevate your skills and another you don't need 100 different paints. Otherwise just getting the paints you need for a base shading layer scheme from citadel? Vallejo also has excellent BSL https://acrylicosvallejo.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/CC329-R00-Model-Color-NewIC.pdf
>>94759793Yeah that was kinda what I was thinking. The issue is that I have no idea what colours I'm really going to need. I have no idea what I am doing lol.I was looking up specific videos for each figure I was going to paint, and they list the paints they use, but even if I get those, I'll still have the same issue as the starter set. More paints of a particular colour than I need. I'm still feeling like I should just waste the money on them and begin somewhere.
>>94759368If you are Ukrainian or Russian, return safely. If not I hope you have fun learning to paint with your hands blown off.
>>94759777Pretty much this >>94759793. Try to roughly plan your color scheme in advance which will give you an idea of what you need. Then depending on how far you want to go make a list of paints. Good rule of thumb is to think in "triads", so pick a basecoat, midtone and highlight for each color you're going to be painting. If you want a simpler panitjob and don't feel like doing highlights you can limit that to 2 paints. You can also alternatively pick only midtones and buy some washes for shading instead. I only used one paint from the new AP range and it's a metallic so I can't really comment on thier quality but everyone here says they're solid. Other brands to consider would be AK, ProAcryl, TTC(Duncan's range but it's more expensive than the others). New Vallejo and Citadel are debatable.
>>94759869Imagine being this incredibly retarded.

>>94759877Yeah that's good advice with the rule of thumb. Thanks, I'll keep it in mind.
>>94759368If Ukrainian, good luck and stay safe. If Russian stay home. If North Korean... weird, idk, sorry that happened.

Does the exhaust heat colors read well? Need second opinion
>>94760430I think they look good anon, maybe you could add a bit of pure black near the actual exhaust? That would tie it all together nicely I think>>94760311Huh, I'm not exactly trying to do that but that's nice I guess.>>94760349I mean anime website, right? It's just cute weeb stuff, not like it's doing any harm
>>94759823Liking it, what color is the armor going to be?
>>94760430You've got the color progression right but hit the very ends and inside with black for all the soot those engines no doubt throw off
Primed the other half of the kommandos kill team. As before primed in dark neutral grey with a heavy zenithal of ivory. Most of the oils I'm using for this kill team are transparent or semitransparent so the extra warmth from the ivory will help to steer the rest of my colors warmer and tie them together. Also reprimed my test marines, didn't bother stripping them so the details got a little clogged but they're test models, we ain't baking a mozart over here. Only concern is the yellow I'm using seems to be drying out in its tube, either the plastic cap cracked or there was a hole in the metal tube thats letting some air in. I don't use that yellow that often but its my skin highlight color this project so I'll need to replace it. At least its the travel size from the starter set I got years ago instead of a full size tube, but even so a replacement is like $8 so not a huge deal.
>>94760471>It's just cute weeb stuff, not like it's doing any harmYou're bordering on avatarfagging though, but since you're not a cunt while doing so, I won't complain.
This is a regular terminator pauldron on top of a cataphractii terminator's shoulder. It needs knifework to fit, but is it a good idea?
>>94760523>You're bordering on avatarfagging thoughyeah I know, that's why I only attach these images every other post. I'll limit it further though, not like it's necessary or anything
>>94760682Don't listen to that anon.
>>94760666sounds like that dude will have extra broad shoulders
>>94760730I don't know why I didn't think of that part. I knew the shoulder was thicker but it's a good bit thicker. Shit. The only SM stuff I have are terminators and the Age of Darkness launch box, so now I don't know what else to do in the way of kitbashing.
>>94759777I have to disagree with >>94759793 that they are all a meme. Sorry.I strongly support >>94759859 choice of going with that starter, especially in your case.It has absolutely everything you need to cover a pretty big colour gamut.Yes you'll have to mix, but if you learn that from the get go I'll be a huge benefit to your painting in the long run and you won't have to unlearn bad habits. Mixing paints is fun and honestly not that difficult. If you're only painting a bunch of models to begin with then having 100% color consistency doesn't matter too much anyways. That is even more true considering KDM will be mostly individual sculpts rather than a huge army of miniatures with the same paint scheme.AK paints are good and that particular paint selection is great.
>>94760769do you have a theme going on if everything needs to be kitbashed or just an overlowing bitz boxyou can always stuff some greenstuff there and make into hanging chainmail or something
>>94760682Thing is, posting wip also identifies the user, so in that sense we're all sort of guilty by necessity.>>94760699Always listen to that anon, for he is wise. We should respect that anon possibly crown him our king.
>>94760799I'm trying to make a terminator captain be distinct enough that he could be displayed as a chapter master. The cataphractii arms were my first thought because I think the shoulder curtains are neat. I guess the easiest solution would just be to greenstuff my own curtains.
>>94759777Newb anon who recommended the AK basic set, warpaint fanatic is also excellent for beginners, but you do not need their sets. They have triads of six colors, just get the lightest, midtone and darkest out of the six. If you really wanted to you could get all six of course, but I would say getting a set is overkill unless you really want the entire range.
>>94760861I'm also gonna second the recommendation for fanatic, at least specifically for their pure white. Have next to no experience with their line aside from a total of four bottles, but I'm not buying citadel shit any more.
I'm an absolute beginner, and bought the army painter fanatic starter as my first step into the hobby. I was looking at the colors and it seemed to me that if had bought the ones I needed individually I would have been paying at least the same price as the box which also gave me some extras and a simple brush and mini to have my first fuck ups with. I don't know if what I did was the "best" thing to do, but for now I am happy with just putting a few colors on a primed fig, a wash and varnish. Although been considering getting satin varnish for the guns and metal.
>>94760915>Although been considering getting satin varnish for the guns and metaldont fly off the handle with the useless stuff right from the start just keep it simple, you dont need that stuff yetpaint and base some models and you will get better at it in time, everyone did it at some point and it works
>>94760915If you're not going to be moving your minis a lot you don't even need to bother with a varnish imo. Unless of course you're doing it to get a specific finish
>>94761042Note for beginner anon: "a lot" is "ever leaving the house with them, especially if you use foam storage". Magnetic storage can kind of get around the need for varnish, but you are still almost guaranteed to regret not varnishing your models if you plan to actually use them and not just leave them in a display cabinet.
>>94761066that's true I probably should've made that clear lol
>>94761066>>94761072one should also keep in mind that contrast painting is even more prone to scratches than grocery store bag full of metal minis of olden times
I have no idea how to paint fur
I'm gonna start greenstuffing (eventually). If I'm just adding superficial details like a raised emblem or chainmail, am I better off doing those during assembly or after?
>>94761604>Bloodborne cannonWhat the hell, this is so cool. I'm actually replaying BB right now, too. Anyway, fur lends itself reallly well to drybrushing because of all the texture but what you have looks fine as well. I'd try to differentiate the fur from the leather straps though

>>94762099Ty. What do you mean by pigment? You mean the dry pigment they sell that's like dust?>>94762112No. I just think the redneck aesthetic fits the ork army. I'm not even american>>94762214Ty. The base color is Averland Sunset. The mid tone is Flashgitz Yellow. The lighter tone and edge highlights are done with Ice Yellow from Vallejo
>>94762349>dry pigment they sell that's like dustYes. it really helps sell the soot effect. You'd also need to get some pigment fixer with it though so it's your call if you feel like going that far
speaking of pigment - how do you affix pigment? I don't have a dedicated pigment fixer, is that the only way to do it without messing up the positioning or finish?
>>94762429varnish will fix it but change the finish obviouslyIPA but you have to use a tiny amount or it will effect the paintI don't know of any others
>>94757456Their first mini won't look good. But a badly painted mini on the table looks infinitely better than a grey mini
>>94758803Did you really thin the paint on your pallet until it had flow and good coverage, but didn't wasn't a glaze?Did you clean your brush after thinning your paint and before you started painting?Did you touch your paintbrush to a paper towel after picking up paint to get rid of the excess?Did you keep putting layer after layer of paint on the model because you got impatient with coverage?
>>94761655>paint cape dark red>hmmm this needs highlights>highlight cape>oh it's taking away from the fire armour, this needs to be darkened>put deeper red wash on cape>hmm this needs highlightsanons help I've done this three times tonight
>>94762757I'm kinda conflicted on this, it looks good for an anologous scheme or whatever you call that, which I assume is what you're going for. At the same time I feel like it desperately needs something to break up the scheme somewhere for some contrast because it kinda blends together? I don't know how to put it into words, maybe I'm full of it
2 questions:Should I add rust to the karnivore's pipes/pistons? andShould I put alpha legion transfers on the chaos side? Apparently House Krast isn't on the transfer sheet any more so my idea to have Krast on the red side and Alpha on the other is kind of gone.
>>94762818that colorshift effect looks absurdly cool
>>94762803NTA but I think the urn thing should be a different color. I think there's too much of that reddish brown and it would be an easy way to break things up.
>>94762803ur right. I'm gonna do the flesh strips and the cannon and see how I feel about the rest. Honestly just thinking of redoing the cape to a dark blue on the back and try to do fire osl coming from the body.but for now anime & then sleep.
Anyone have ideas beyond brown and black for the metal verminlord?I am not coming up with anything.
>>947629983d print him a horsecock
>>94763014I could glue the tail to the front
>>94763024Actual answer would be to incorperate copper and verdigris or OSLs coming from the warpstone. Maybe try doing a warpstone NMM for his sword?
Which cloth color
>>94763064Left with brown highlights
>>94763091I did grey to go with the black
>>94763064yellow? lime green?
>>94763322It's AK sky grey washed with an orc flesh wash
>>94763358I misunderstood the question
>>94763299I went for more of a drybrush action and I think it looks really good
>>94763620It's nice and that's from someone who doesn't like space marines. I like how the gun draws your eye.
>>94762970You just need to work on the fur a bit, put some lighter and darker shades to it like pic rel
Progress
>>94762970>>94764026Yeah a very light dry brush with a brighter red or reddish white will bring all that fur together. Fur is great fun to paint. You can copy real animal pelts or do whatever you want and then I find that final drybrush just always brings it all together.
Calling the body done. Now I need to have my 3d printed heads come in and finish the base.
>>94763989Thank you I'm gladI just realized these guys have leather belts so I filled them in with this purple-black I was using as a small reference elsewhereMy palette's dried and my brush saturated so I'm probably done painting for the night but at least I know what colors I'm using now
I just love these little dudes. Cant wait to fly them straight into my friends flame throwers.
Bought some AK acrylic puddles, anyone have experience with that? Anything i should be aware of when using it?
New thread:>>94765071>>94765071>>94765071
So I finally decided to take the dive and get some miniatures. I may have gone a bit in the deep end choosing a chaos marine army, but out of everything I just think the World Eaters look the coolest. Still in the box, store had a decent deal on the WE combat patrol but the tools and paints seemed a bit on the pricy side compared to other places. Is there a best glue to use for putting these thing together? I have some gorilla glue but I don't want to use anything that would damage the models.
