How does this gut plate look? I'm trying to avoid using metallic paints, but I'm no where near good enough to pull off true nmm.
>>94713267>>94712863Should I contact the seller or just make another order of the field drab colour I want and hope the field drab colour I like is the real field drab? Also how are turbo dork metallics? I am looking at black ice.>>94714067I like what you've got there. I like your choice of colours for the scratches in particular. Even if it isn't a proper NMM, the effect is still sold.
>>94714067looks good. I thought it was metallic at first glance.
>>94714080>>94714098Thank you.

I started my Alpha Legion knight project today. Everyone says the decloaking effect is overdone, but it was surprisingly hard to find reference pictures. There's exactly one article on GSWs website of someone doing something similar to this, which I'm using as inspiration. One side is House Krast, and the other will be Dark Mech/Alpha Legion.
>>94714322The turquoise lightning effect is overdone but that color-fade effect on the carapace looks pretty bitchin'
>>94714332It's iridescent paint, which I don't think I've seen people do very often. I thought it would help sell the illusion.

is this a good deal for tools?the product says gundam but I assume they work well with warhammer miniatures too
>>94714794Can't tell whats in the box but looks like most of that is not necessary for 28mm minis. How much is it? You might be better off just getting the tools separate and get get quality.
>>94714794If you are starting out and just want to try the hobby without committing just yet then it’s fine, even if the set itself is shittyIf you’re more or less serious, I’d rather recommend the dspiae departure tool set just for the nippers alone
>>94714794Assuming that's like 15 bucks or so it's a decent place to start from. I hopped into the hobby with the same kit. You definitely get what you pay for though, the snips aren't great.
>>94714794I might suggest some brand name #11 blades. with those nippers your gonna be doing a good amount of cleanup with the knife before sanding, and I could be wrong but if they're anything like the off-brand blades I've used they'll dull real quick. You can worry about it later though, just be aware you might burn through those blades quicker than you migth think.

Some people post collages of their work from 2024 so I wanted to do so, too. Im really thankful for /wip/ for making me realize that the fun of painting matters the most, not comparing myself to others and box arts. It was really comforting to simply paint and enjoy results instead of focusing on every mistake and how none of them are on the level of twitter/fb/instagram/YT masters.Thank you /wip/.

Mordheim warband based on the new clanrats - just about finishedHad to tear shields off and reconstruct with green stuff for all but 3, as I had lost the will to live by that point.
>>94716047Now rescuing some minis from ebay for my next warband. When they arrived, the paintjob on these Blight Kings was not as bad as it looked on ebay. Not confident about the green one though, as his paintjob was basically finished and looks to have had a heavy wash and possibly some varnish. Left 2: Carnival of Chaos brutes (basically Nurgle circus strongmen lorewise) - obligatory 2h weapons. Not hugely happy with the armoured one, as it's a bit too much armour, but not much to be done unless I cover him with green stuff robesRight 2: Cult of the Possessed possessed. They should have no weapons or equipment, but I liked the sword arm so will probs keep it.

Her uniform was painted with Vallejo (new) Game Color "Night Blue" and "Ultramarine Blue", starting with pure "night" and mixed in few steps, coming from pure darker to pure lighter shade. Blonde guy and girl with forest/jungle base on the lower were instead painted with AK "Archaic Turquoise" on GW contrast "Black Templar" and mixed with AK "Snow Blue" while going up in highlights.

Am I supposed to hook something up here on my water filter thingy or am I good to go?Also why does my compressor start at 50-60 psi and then gradually go down to 30 psi, which is the psi I want? I'm worried it will spew too much paint at the beginning
>>94716650Nah, it's just for trapping any condensation so you don't spray water from the compressor out through the airbrush. I've never had to do anything with mine, I don't imagine it matters unless you're mass painting for hours and hours.Probably because your tank pressurizes up to 60psi all the time, and only the regulator brings it down to 30psi (or whatever you set your regulator to), so if you're reading off the regulator gauge it might not read properly till you blow some air through the brush.I do most of my spraying at 30ish, but anywhere from 15-30 is probably fine. ymmv though.
>>94716708My regulator doesn't seem to work. It can go + or - but nothing happens, it pressurizes at 60 psi and goes down to 30 no matter what I do
>>94716719Even if you blow air through the brush? When I turn my regulator valve the gauge stays the same until I blow some air through it. Your compressor is different than mine but I assume many are similar.
>>94716650The thing at the bottom is there for you to push up with your finger if there are significant amounts of water in the trap that you want to let out. Also a useful way to dump the pressure from your tank much faster than through the airbrush, but in a much calmer manner than simply unscrewing a hose.
>>94716727Yeah, I've screwed it as far + as possible and still goes down to 30 psi when releasing air. I mean it's okay, but what if I I want to use 40 or 50 psi?
>>94716782>Also a useful way to dump the pressure from your tank much faster than through the airbrush, but in a much calmer manner than simply unscrewing a hose.what you can also do is just drop the pressure to minimum, unscrew the hose and then slowly increase it. At least that's what I've been doing, this will not destroy my compressor I hope
>>94716719Is it on the right way? I think I remember things going wrong in some rather odd way if you attach the compressor to the wrong side of the regulator, but I can't recall what exactly it was.
>>94716818Hmm I'm not sure if I understand. That black nob is the regulator right? I don't think there is anything that can go the wrong way here. It's the cheapest mini compressor I could get around here so I shouldn't expect too much, but it said it could do 3-4 bars and then it can't maintain more than 2 bars or 30 psi. Very confusing
>>94714380Which iridescent paint is it? Im actually looking into buying some for a current project after being disappointed with Turbodork's quality
>>94716853>That black nob is the regulator right? I don't think there is anything that can go the wrong way here.Oh, you had yours built in. With many compressors the regulator comes as a separate part you have to screw on yourself.>and then it can't maintain more than 2 bars or 30 psiI'd say there are two things to note here. First, the pressure a compressor can maintain depends on how much airflow you take out. If a cheap Chinesium compressors says it can do 60 PSI, then that's probably at fuck all airflow. With the air flow of a normal airbrush with a 0.7mm nozzle at full blast then 30 PSI doesn’t sound entirely implausible. (On the plus side 30 PSI is about the highest I've ever needed. While pressure readings aren't directly comparable form one setup to another since they measure at the compressor rather than at the nozzle, and a lot can happen in between, a good rule of thumb here is that you'll probably do most of your painting at 20 or lower, with 30 being for special cases like heavy-bodied primers.)On the other hand, if the regualtor works as it should then you should obviously be able to dial things down to less than 60/30. Normally when you turn a compressor on (assuming the tank, if you have one, is empty) is that you see the pressure rise on the gauge until it hits whatever you set the regulator too. If you then spray air it'll drop a bit, and jump back up when you stop spraying air. If you then dial the pressure down with everything pressurised you (as has been mentioned) probably need to let the excess pressure out before the gauge shows you the new target pressure. If your regulator doesn't behave like that then, yes, it may be fucked.
>>94716973Thanks, I need to process this. The problem is that I can't get it lower than 30-31 psi and I have no idea why because yeah I might find myself wanting 15-25 psi. I would assume if I turn the nob to the lowest the pressure would lower. Anyway I think I got some decent results
>>94717160fwiw I generally spray at 30psi anyway and never have issues.I would say just make sure that you are fully pushing down the trigger before releasing paint. If you pull back and down at the same time you're spraying an initial bit out at low PSI and it causes some splattering that would otherwise be avoided.
>>94716853Did you make sure to pull up on the regulated knob before you adjusted it?What i do is hook up the gun, hold the air down, and ajust to the psi I want that way it will never go past the 30psi or whatever.

So I've started using an airbrush while painting, and in the last two days I've noticed I feel a bit light-headed when I'm done. I only use acrylics and I wear a FFP2 mask which does not appear to be stained at all, and I don't really use a lot of paints, but could airbrushing be the reason?
>>94717587Shouldn't be happening, the only reason I can think of is because of the ffp2 mask actually. These will make you take shallower breaths so it could be the reason for feeling light headed. Do you have a spray booth with a ventilator? If you do there's really no need to wear a mask if you're spraying acrylics only
>>94717615>Do you have a spray booth with a ventilator?I don't currently have one, since I only recently started.>no need to wear a mask if you're spraying acrylics onlyIsn't that suggested to avoid inhaling atomized particles? I know that fumes are not a problem so a dust filter should be enough, but I thought droplets were still a health hazard, and I'm already quite paranoiac myself.

It's no worse than breathing in a city filled with atomized plastic particles, smog, solvents and shit like that. >>94717587You're not breathing deep enough while airbrushing. The filtration mask makes it significantly harder to get a full lung's worth of air, because you are now pulling it against some added resistance from the filter. You need to breathe harder with the mask on to get the same amount of air.
>>94718373Well it hopefully ain't just water, or you might be overpaying a tad... That said I suspect it's more about focusing really hard (since it's something new you're not used to yet) for extended periods of time. But go get a gas mask (like a 3M half mask) with particle & organic vapor filters. It'll do the trick if there is something in the paint or thinner, and allow you to get going with the really fun paints&thinners.

Newbie here, need some color scheme inspiration for an armiger kit I'm running as a war dog brigand. Brass trim and red on half the panels looks good on some test bits, but can I do hazard stripes over black primer without an airbrush?
>>94718485>3M half maskI think most of the time that's considered more of a respirator than a gas mask but also there isn't actually that much difference between the two when it comes down to it. I'm currently using one with P95 filters. Can't smell even a hint of paint thru this fucker (tho I'm just using waterbased acrylics and would have to check if it's actually sufficient for anything stronger).
>>94718616>but can I do hazard stripes over black primer without an airbrush? You can. Tape + drybrush/stippling with very little paint until you have solid coverage. Tricky part is getting a smooth finish like that, but it is doable.
>>94718617What I meant is that one anon said that no masks are needed at all, while another (maybe the same?) says to buy that mask rather than, say, a disposable one like those used during covid.
Richmond anon,I just got home after a very long drive and got a chance to open your package.Wow! This is a bunch of great picks. I've only ever used acrylic inks and the Vallejo metallics without the metal bits, so I'm anxious to try the enamel washes and the Liquid Gold and Brass out. The True Metal paint will have to get tested out on some Hivestorm terrain later, I didn't even know this type of paint existed, should be pretty cool. The other hobby supplies are just what I needed, and even though I also wear glasses, I'm nearsighted and have recently broken my Helping Hands so I will be getting ample use out of the headband. The candies look delicious and I'm a big fan of Nanaimo bars so they will definitely not last long. I've never painted ogres before so I will definitely get a kick out of painting these, gonna try out some new chipping techniques and the paints and basing materials you've included on them.I'll post again when the last part (!!!) of your gift arrives so you can be sure it reached me intact. Thanks again for such a great gift, and have a happy new year!
>>94718773I FORGOT THE IMAGE!Thanks Santa for putting this together again this year, and I'm glad that it seems no one got Grinched.
>>94718485>Why a gas mask?>>94718634>says to buy that mask rather than, say, a disposable one like those used during covid. An FFP2 face mask only catches particles. It doesn't do shite about gas, ie vapours. Will Vallejo thinner create a lot of nasty vapours? Probably not, but there's supposedly between 2.5 and 10 % of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2-Butoxyethanol in it, so I won't promise it's effectively nothing either. So if you're feeling knackered after painting a bit... might be best to get something that stops fumes as well then, no? Enter your basic half mask, to which you add particle filters (we still want to stop those) and organic vapour filters.Plus if you have an airbrush you'll probably want to move on to the really good airbrush paints on day, and they are absolutely not water-based. Dunno what thinner is in theme exactly, but you can use MrPaint's lacquer paints as extra thin cement if you want. At that point the organic vapour filters aren't just an "might as well" thing any more.

Having a bit too much will never hurt, but an insufficient amount absolutely will. >some anons say you don't need it at allIt really depends on your risk tolerance. >>94718632>drybrush stipplingGotcha anon, thanks! I'll report back later with the damage
>>94718790Word of advice on the enamel - you need white spirits/odorless thinner to thin it and clean it. Also use cheap ass brushes, it wrecks brushes even when cleaned. It does great work though.

>>94718878>damn near the entire comment section is braying about how unapproachable/unrealistic it isThis happens here as well. On the board as a whole I mean. I really don't understand why you wouldn't skip a couple GW kits to get yourself a cheap airbrush which would greatly increase your painting experience.
>>94718899black makes colors darker if you only use a few layers of paitn in top. enough paint and the black doesnt matter. Though it can be a pain with lighter colors like yellow or white. I personally prefer priming white cause of that.Or if im feeling fancy, prime black/grey from the bottom and white on top.
>>94718898Probably, but my point was that they can reach fantastic results even with acrylics, what is a good example of what other products can reach that acrylics cannot?
>>94718930Could try doing one coat over white when possible, from my test bases the difference goes away at the second coatOther than that you'd probably have to try mixing some new brighter hues or doing some brighter highlighting
>>94717484Yeah I think so. It's a safety lock and can't be turned unless it's pulled up. I will try that but it didn't respond IIRC
Can someone explain to me the pros and cons of black primer? I started hobbying with white primer this summer and it wokred fine for my noob first project, but now that I started exploring advanced techniques I quite enjoyed layering and it seems that starting with black is a massive positive, as it would let me have naturally darker early layers. I also saw a lot of pros using black primers, so I assume it has positive effects. And while I didn't try it, I assume starting with black significantly reduces the need for washes, which while I loved at first, I now find a bit sus with how they tend to stain around the recesses. But still, a can of primer is a sizable purchase when I could buy 5 new paints instead, so I'm not sure if I won't regret it later. Like, even with white primer I get fucked when I try to basecoat a white-yellow mix, so I imagine black will be fairly ruthless for these poor coverage colours.
>>94714067I like it>>94715687damn>>94717999cute
Built more of the kommandos today, a few left to build then I'll break out the airbrush to prime. The rest of the orks have dried nicely but will still need a coat of matte varnish to help even out the finish, they'll get varnished with the bases after I pin. Once I'm done with this kill team I'm not sure what I'm going to do, I have the dark apostle and his two followers to paint for my word bearers and I'll be out of models.
>>94719063+areas you missed/can't reach are much harder to see+beginning from the darkest possible color makes for a more intuitive "work from the lowest values/part of the model to the highest" workflow+good black primer is far easier to come by than white-more vibrant or transparent colors will require more layers to cover-need to do an undercoat if you want to use contrast-likes
>>94716047really like the cobblestones, that greenstuff? Also, really clean. I find darker colors often blend into each other, but the various parts here are super distinct. that green + dark grey/black works really well.
>>94718967Honestly, I'm a big wimp and only use water based acrylics, but the autists over at /smg/ insist that the toxic stuff coats way smoother. I suppose if you had some metal minis that a lacquer would probably be a lot better for priming them as well.
>>94719137I don't use contrasts at all. Currently my next project would be Stormcasts going for a more weathered look - a lot of silver with darker recesses and aged gold. I would like to have very bright cyan for runes and bright blue flames, so maybe that part would be annoying with black?
>>94719209>didn't fall for the speedpaint/contrast meme when starting outpretty based desu
Anyone have an idea or store where I can get wood wheels for things like carts, siege towers etc...?
>>94719209For metals it makes sense to go with black and then give the runes an undercoat (by brush) in white before painting the cyan.Stormcast also tend to have lots of capes which depending on the colour could also benefit from white.I'm just in the process of airbrushing a bunch of them and I'll do a white layer undercoat before applying the greens for the capes, because even with an airbrush they come out more vibrant with white underneath.
>>94719209You'd have to do two or three layers of white on the glowy bits if your cyan is transparent.
>>94719209Blues I don't think really have coverage issues, it's more for yellows or whites or some reds. And you can always just layer more or start with a darker shade of that to let the lighter ones go on easier etc. I like contrasts better as washes so any recesses being stuck as black would be less good for me.
Is AK interactive fautless?
>>94718844Depends on what you're doing. If a very smooth and even coat of paint is needed, or if you're looking to do really good blending, or just some nicely mottled camo, or razor thin demarcation lines, then lacquer paints (or at least the Tamiya style "acrylics" with lacquer thinner) will usually help a good deal. If you're just basecoating before a wash&drybrush job on something far more texture than surfaces then, yeah, whatever.>>94718967I don't worry so much about what lofty peaks some superbly talented painter can reach with this or that, what matters to my paint selection is how good a result I can get with my skills and a for me sane investment of effort.
>>94718844nta but solvent-based paints are vastly superior to acrylics. They dry quickly and super smoothly while being much, much more resilient to abrasion. Technically they don't need primer either. The issue is that they tend to be glossy (needing a coat of matte varnish after), have a very low transparency and don't take very well to the brush, kinda restricting them only to base coats. Metallic lacquers are particularly good because the size of the little flakes it carries is like 1/4th of the size of the acrylic mica pigment. >>94718898That's only true with y**tubers who cultivate the citadel ecosystem consoomer kind of audience. I refuse to believe normal model people complain about airbrushes.
>>94719282For capes I'm planning to go for deep ocean blue, so I think black primer shouldn't hurt too much? I don't have much layering experiance, but shouldn't the primer color stop being a factor after the first 5 or so layers and then become indestinguishable from a multi-layer coat on a white primer?
>>94719309>I refuse to believe normal model people complain about airbrushes.Basically everyone on the scale model side paints primarily with airbrush.
>>94719063Pros>easy to see where you are applying it, which is potentially a huge issue if using an airbrush>pre-shades your mini, making the management of shadows easier later on>makes some paints look differentCons>coverage can be pretty bad. Some colors will outright require you to basecoat white on top of black>generally, having a black undercoat makes colors less saturated>the pro of having darker shadows can be replicated by just base coating a darker color on white and working up the lighter colors from thereI like black primer. I like white more, but it definitely has its place. Try priming black and white and testing your paints in each. Some can look quite different.
>>94719309There are fairly big differences between brands when it comes to size of pigments as well as mica or aluminium in acrylic paints. I think it's a bit hard to generalise here. There are people here as well calling airbrushing cheating or similar stupid takes and wildly exaggerating how hard they are to clean and maintain. It's not limited to citadel/warhammer unfortunately.
>>94719359Well that's because scales tend to have large flat surfaces while minis are smaller and more detailed. You need a brush to paint all this shit and acrylics are good for that. Also as I said earlier, even here you have faggots that complain about airbrushed stuff or saying they dropped a sloptuber becauser he started using one in his videos.
>>94719372>There are people here as well calling airbrushing cheating or similar stupid takes and wildly exaggerating how hard they are to clean and maintainOh yeah, for sure. Yesterday I spent an hour unclogging my airbrush. But that is kinda the worst case scenario, having a nasty clog that you need to fully disassemble to fix. I just don't think it's comparatively that big of a hassle compared to all the other shit we do in painting with the nice sable brushes we have to clean, the wet palettes with specialty paper, managing to thin your paints correctly, glazing highlights etc. The one big barrier to entry is the initial investment in an airbrush and a compressor.
>>94719408>spent an hour unclogging my airbrusWhat the fuck happened there? Even if you had to clean every single part after disassembly it shouldn't take that long
>>94718898>>94719359kinda disrelated, but I pretty much quit trying to paint gunpla since it essentially requires an airbrush to look even a little decent. and That wont fly going between college dorms and parents house. Not setting up a filter system there.
Didnt realize I posted in the dead thread earlier. But I loved painting these guys and trying stuff I see in tutorials. Can't wait to use the rats for kill team games. Also what's everyone using for a spray coat to protect the paint job? Painting on sealers usually gives me a very glossy finish.
>>94719430can drybrush with wet palette be a decent substitute? I don't have gunpla but I imagine it would work since it's basically just a bigger brush
>>94719426Some lacquer primer dried up inside of the tube between the nozzle and the cup and didnt dissolve with the thinner in the cleanup. It wasn't really blocked per se but the surface tension of water didnt allow it to go down with gravity. Most of the time was figuring out what happened, I suspected the nozzle at first ofc but it was completely fine. At the end I just scraped the walls of the tube with a needle and got it all off.I probably shoud just get a hotter cleaning product and remove the tip o-rings after I'm done.
>>94719444rudolf the red noised skaven
>>94719456maybe. much bigger surface areas you deal with then models, so its harder to make a surface look even by brush. but drybrush may be a solution. Kinda fell off my gunpla schtick regardless.
>>94719209Darkcast are bestcast.
>>94719444Brush on and rattlecan varnishes exist, there's a good round up video of rattlecan ones you can find on youtube. Once I get something to a point where I'd varnish it I plan on trying the AK ultra matte + speedpaint medium mix
>>94719456nta, but I drybrushed the armor and skin on this guy. I'd like to think it came out alright, but a gunpla would definitely be a lot less forgiving than grimy ass deathguard
>>94716047I wish there were more and more popular mordheim-like skirmish games. Its a lot of fun making like 10 models for a theme then moving on to something else. Not nearly the same burn out, and you get a lot of cool ideas due to lack of sunk cost.
>>94719518It's not bad but the stipple marks are kinda visible so I'm fairly sure if a plamo/gunpla guy saw this he would lose his shit
>>94719518A finish like that wouldnt fly on gunpla. Unless you went for something super weathered, which ususally isnt the case.
>>94719565Yeah I'm trying to get my friends into Frostgrave. Really fun building the warbands for them.
>>94719246Hobby lobby has lots of bits and bobs like that, just need to comb the store to find it.
>>94719646isnt that kind of restricted to playing as a wizard lead group?liked frostgrave as a concept, but always found its setting a bit restrictive. cold +wizard lead, rather than the bit more open ended concept of mordhiem "collect this exotic resource for whateverthefuck reason"
>>94719566>>94719580It's not just gunpla either, I think even in miniature painting there's way too much focus on smoothness and blends. There's so much more to miniature painting than technical painting.I plan to try a bit more of an artistic approach on some projects this year.
>>94719712DamnThe hobby lobby 5 minutes away from me closed down
>>94719750As long as the same style is applied across the whole model and base it should look fine. Its when people try to blend different styles together that things get wonky looking. Like someone trying nnm and tmm on the same model it usually doesn't work because it draws your eye to the differences more than harmony.
>>94719742Yeah but it makes for some great themes. You have a bunch of schools of magic, so you can build your warbands theme around those. The rules are vague enough that weapons and soldiers can be whatever you want. Pick a witch and make them an orc shaman type and have an orc warband or necromancer with an undead warband, enchanter with dorfs etc. I think it's great for building warbands. Haven't had a chance to play it yet so no idea if that translates well into gameplay.
>>94719750>>94719430Was never good enough, but I always had the idea to try and mod the MG Barbatos to look all 1700's-y. turing the katana into a saber by adding a hand gaurd, turning its head crest into a tricorn hat, turining its big gun into a faux-flinlock, and painting its main body to look like it was made of lacquered wood with bronze/copper lining. some nice copperplate cursive in gold for serial numbers.Too big of a project for me though, and never figured out how I could make big pieces look like wood without a lot of work or making it look horrible. Thought it could be an award winning idea though, all the pieces are there.
Looking back on the last year I'm happy with what I painted, I just wish i'd managed slightly more.I guess that's what this years for
>>94719866Yah, I guess I like the idea of a game not being necessarily magic dependent. So you can bring your all-knights party or all-rangers party or any other group. instead of magic guy + support. I think rangers of shadow deep is less magic dependent, but its primarily solo and smaller scale (Think like usually 3-8 ish models)
I'm trying to learn how to shade with layering instead of shade paints. I have a figure scale model to paint tomorrow for practice, it's a lady barbarian with a big axe. I think I know what I want to use for the skin (VMC cavalry brown -> VMC brown rose -> VMC basic skin tone), but I'm trying to think of what other paints I will need for the leather, stone, and hair (I wanna do bright orange/red). Any recommendations? Especially for the hair, I'm not sure if I should start from like a dark red or more of a reddish brown. Preferably vallejo just for consistency but that's not super important.
>>94720143OH, and one more question, would it be better to prime a large scale model that is mostly flesh in black or grey?
>>94720163I'd go with grey in that case, especially if the flesh is supposed to be somewhat healthy looking.
>>94720189Okay. It should definitely be healthy, I chose base colors that had some red tint to them to try and make the skin look more "alive" so I guess I'll go with a lighter primer
>>94720219You could try the old purple and green undercoat and then glaze the skintone over that. You'll still have a nice layering practice but also get the fun of the green to skin magic.
Not sure where else to say this, but...I'm not hugely 'for' or 'against' speedpaints, but I got two sets of them from two different people as gifts last year, and I've felt obligated to use them before I buy new paints for myself. It's been surprisingly difficult to use them up.
>>94720381Drink them.
>>94720381Use them for base terrain and scenery. That eats them right up
>>94720381Full sets? Damn, ship one to me. I’ve been meaning to try those.
Got me some reading glasses and holy moly im feeling nauseous for like half an hour nowAnd thats on the x2.0 lens and using them for a few minutesHow do you people paint while using them
>>94720663New glasses are always something you have to get used to.
>>94714794The snippers aren't great,as others have mentioned, but the knife is serviceable and I've gotten some use out of the sanding bars by abrading flat pieces of plastic for easier gluing.Still, if I were in your shoes I'd just buy good clippers, a good knife, and a cutting/painting surface instead.
>>94720727I guess so, not used to wearing glasses my whole life so I just feel like my head is spinning while using them
I want to start my assassinorum squad but I am sure I will fuck up shiny latex. Anyone have any good tutorials/advice?
I am going to do the leap of faith guys, I am about to order this one on Amazon.
>>94720768The real "fun" begins with progressive glasses.
>>94719491WTF, I love stormcasts now! Genuinely look loads better then the golden armors.
>>94719566yea ngl, looking back at it now it's not as smooth as I remember lol>>94719580>super weathered, which ususally isnt the case.unfortunate
>>94717757>>94717715Very nice man. Love how colourful your mini's are. They really pop.It does kind of make that elf in the back stand out as a bit plane tho. I guess he doesn't have a gem or parchment could could use to add a bit of brightness to? But maybe him being more subdued is a good thing. They all look great either way!
>>94720798i work at amazon im gonna make sure you get something good :)
>>94714039Anyone got any ideas on where these helmets came from? they almost look like doom marine helmets but they are cast in metal.
Today I have to figure out an entirely new basing scheme for my horde army. I know what I want, the only question is how to achieve it.We'll start with spackle and see where it takes us.
>>94721072those are pig iron minitures. I used them myself years ago. Good little company
>>94721197Thank you
>>94720798are flamer marines even worth having game wise
>>94720798buy the Age of Sigmar one, thank me later.
Do you guys have advice for puddle bases? I tried out spackle on some earlier miniatures by spackling over the middle part between the legs and trying it just around the sides but neither has been exactly promising. It's tricky to work with.
boys are all together now. Happy how this turned out. Not great lighting however, might try again in the morning.Git a nice 11 model skirmish force now. Seems like a fun bunch to spelunk in mordheim with.
>>94721481idk why I said 11, meant 9.
What's the difference between Vallejo game color and Vallejo model color?which is better for 75 and 128mm scale models?
how do you guys prime? I feel like I never like the finish I get, it always feels gritty even if I do it in a controlled humidity/temperature environment. I've tried multiple colors from multiple companies and it just never feels/looks right, I feel like I'm going crazy. Do I need to buy an airbrush to get a decent prime finish?
>>94721579>always feels grittywhite primer. not even once. Nothing you can do about it, it's just a bad product.
>>94721607It's not just white though, I get the feeling with wraith bone and mechanicus standard grey as well
When building the valkyrie, is it MANDATORY to paint the interior or can I just slap some black contrast on the glass and call it a day
I'm trying to cut the top flat part out of a base and god damn I need to figure out a better way to do this. I'm gonna cut my finger off.
Progress on my wall attempts. Brick one is done i think. Other one I'm still undecided what to do next with. Painted and drybrushed it, but didn't like how flat it looked, so gave it a brown was and will probably go over with a drybrush again, but I probably won't touch that one again for a while.
>>94721658If you don't want to paint the interior thn just do a good job on the glass and no one will care. post your valk
>>94721802Pretty big scalewise, but I think it works as big mysterious ruins. I think I'll have to half the brick size for more mundane terrain though.
>>94721802>>94721993The best way to do stone is to pick like 3 shades of grey/brown or whatever. Basecoat everything in a lighter color (i like a tan) then start painting random rocks grey and brown. It will look cartoony at first but that's where the wash comes in.Hit it with a black wash and then a sepia. You can then drybrush a little white or the base tan. This is some stonework I did last year. The wash wasn't fully dry so it doesn't actually look that glossy.
>>94722044It doesn't help that your camera focused on your hand rather than the wall. But yeah looks good from what I can see. I think too brown and yellow for what I want. I wanted to go up the blue/grey scale mostly.
>>94722056You can use whatever colors you want but the main idea is that stone/brick isn't uniform. Even if you are doing an all red brick wall you would want some bricks dark red, some mid, and some light. The wash will tie it all together
>>94722060Yeah that makes sense. I airbrushed layers of greys and then drybrushed up to white, but have a few darker and lighter ones would make it look more interesting. I'll remember that for my bigger projects.
>>94722080This is the basic recipe I followed when I was trying to figure it out and have had nothing but success.Your bricks look great BTW, just needs a little more color variation to push it to the next level. https://youtu.be/MU45M-MvOOQ?si=sckGLUXNlIIXa6Ww
>>94722096Oh yeah, I think I've seen this or at least had it queued up for a while. Definitely seen some of his other stuff.

Hey /wip/! This is something I like to do at the start of the new year, and I noticed some others have done so as well, so I figured I would go ahead and post my finished 2024 models retrospective. I combed through my photos and gather up all of the models I finished over the year for a group snap shot. Sometimes it is easy to get lost in the giant pile of backlog. We lose inspiration, and find it all over again. We have moments when there is no time at all to sit down and paint, and others where we are able to churn and burn through the grey tide! Life definitely finds a way to shift priorities around, but for us hobbyists, we always try to find the time.2024 was notably Necron filled for me, adding 15 Deathmarks, 3 Skorpekh Destroyers (for a total of 9), 6 Lokhust Destroyers, 3 Skorpekh Lords, a Lokhust Lord, an Overlord with Translocation Shroud, Imotekh the Stormlord, and a C'tan Shard of the Void Dragon. I did manage to squeeze in a little bit of marine reinforcements, adding 3 Eradicators (total 6), and 5 Intercessors to the army.I also got to work on my World Eaters, adding a Hellbrute, a Daemon Prince, and 10 Jakhals to the army.Certainly not the most models I have finished in one year, but that's the time I had in 2024. Happy New Year everyone, and keep painting!
>>94721802wich snow is that? it looks great
>>94722203All game terrain base layer snow. It was such a pain in the ass to work with. I ended up going PVA, sprinkling it on, but was still too thin after I tapped off the loose stuff, so I piled more on and dropped some scenic cement drops into each pile which i think is just watered down PVA. It clumped up a lot more then and gave me more depth.

Gonna be doing up some cats and a cat librarian to go with them, love the vexillas in all 3 of these squads. My plan is to do details on 2-3 models a day, then do varnish and decals on groups of 10. What pace do you guys like to work through big projects. I’m at my happiest when I’m doing one model at a time but I also can’t stand my desk being cluttered with hobby supplies since space is a premium and I can’t separate my work/gaming/hobbying desk.

Or you might be a bit too careful with it, while you obviously don't ant any pooling or runs (those remains very clear "way too much paint" indicators) or so you still want a solid layer of wet paint on the mode, so surface tension can smooth things out for you.

>>94715337A wet pallet needs to have something to retain moisture, so you'll want something like a sponge or paper towel underneath that paper for it to work at all. The one you posted is a traditional pallet, so if you use that, you'll be manually combining water and paint to get the right consistency. Both are usable, but if you do want a traditional pallet, don't buy that unless you absolutely want the skull design. You can buy a regular plastic pallet at any arts and crafts section, whether that's a hobby store, dollar store, or whatever else, and it'll be both substantially cheaper and have more usable surface area.

>>94724951super cool ottoman/near east look. Really underrated aesthetic. pretty dang clean paint job too with all the little edge details. literally all it needs is shading. Other anons say it needs basing, but desu, as long as you clean up some of the loose paint on the base, it would look good all on black too. will contrast nice with the reds and metalics. silver/bronze + red + black is sweet.
>>94725211Oh, forgot, it also reminds me of the look in the Adventure conquer king rpg book. Has that neat middle eastern look going as as well.
>>94725172All true. Some things, like skin, I use base layers +shading because I like a smooth, clean look; speed paints and washes make it too 'grimy' looking for me). Where I really like speedpaints is when I want to punch up the saturation of a color, or if I'm doing a lot of mostly monochrome models (like skeletons). Either way, I still like to combine speedpaints with a little highlighting and sometimes a wash, to help up the contrast.
>>94720381Its difficult to use any paint up if you are using them for models.
>>94725279I hate pot paints mostly 'cause im a clutz and if I leave something open I will inevitably bump it over. with an eye dropper bottle im habitually inclined to drip a few droops then twist the caps back on immediately, preventing this from happening. Ive probably literally spilt magnitudes more paint from pots then I have put paint on models by volume.
>>94725279That is true, a single pot/bottle of paint should last you a good couple kits as a main color of your army. Stuff that you use sparingly for some small details etc will last you literal years though.
>>94725307I have a few pots left around from the mid nineties...
Started the year well enough by finishing this project i had on my desk for a while.Hope everyone's projects are going well and wish that the new year brings more completion of w.i.p.s to everyone.
>>94725335Group shot for size (base is 40 mm)
>>94725335very cute lizard fella
>>94720956I wonder how much that would matter without a black background. It's easier to see contrast on the other two, showing as much skin as those hussies are, but the elf has a purple robe and dark purple cloak against a black background. I'd bet it looks a lot better when the backdrop isn't working against it.
>>94725335Adorable.
>>94721242I like em, the autohit makes em alright for overwatch. I wouldn't know if they're meta or not, I don't play like that, but I can confirm that having a whole squad of walking Vietnam flashbacks is pretty tight. I've heard they're good with the Salamanders detachment, but I've never tried it myself.
>>94722142I like em all, but that Necron scheme is the bee's knees, nice work
I think I just ruined my "magnum opus", a 6 (SIX) hour paint job where I tried to do my best. >be me>use half a dozen shitty speedpaints before>good enough (tm), I just wanna play desu>fast forward a bit, my gf gives me a ton of Citadel paints>see this as a great way to get into "proper" painting>today, attempt to go above and beyond what I normally do>paint away, it takes fucking forever>i think the colors look good>really proud of the little buttons I painted silverThis is where tragedy strikes. >at the very end decide to use a shade, I read here that it makes a huge difference>everybody loves nuln oil but I don't have it, only berserker bloodshade and athonian camoshade>ah shit man, i don't know>decide to mix it>test in on my hand>it's a brown tone of sorts, whatever, let's do it>(the devil moves my brush)>apply that shit>apply too much, I think>hold on, what is this, where did all my colors go>where did my silver buttons go? The shiny silver buttons i was so proud of>my miniature becomes incredibly sticky for some fucking reason>try to pool some of it off with toilet paper, which is kinda symbolic>it barely soaks it up but leaves little lint everywhere>why is it so sticky and gross to touch now>6 hoursI feel so fucking defeated bros. This was supposed to be my masterpiece.
>>94725565A shade is not something you slop on and then some crazy magic happens that turns your mini into a golden demon. It darkens colors and settles in the recesses for easy shadows. From there you want to work up again to highlight your model and keep the shade in the recessed areas. Try and get the lint off your model and highlight it back up. Also I dunno what the fuck you did to make your model sticky with a wash lol.
>>94725565I should've just sticked to speed paint slapchop. That looks like shit too, but at least it's fast. I just felt like I had to use the colors my gf gave me and they are beautiful colors. But I just can't use them to their potential. Somebody throw me in the garbage compactor.
>>94725604hehe when I'm done with my current models (Tau, Pathfinder squad, Tau Enforcer, Christmas Gob and Beast Snagga Boss) I will get a shitload of DKoK and paint them they are so cool
>>94725565>a 6 (SIX) hour paint jobI'm not trying to belittle your efforts by any means but it's really not that bad. I don't know if you slapped on way too much wash/shade but if you just put it onto the entire miniature you are supposed to reapply your basecoats on the flatter surfaces. That makes them vibrant again while leaving the wash in the recesses giving you the shading you want. Unless you literally drowned the guy in that shit it should still be salvageable
Yellow starting to get some definition now, should look quite striking once the team is all done.>>94725565Don't lose heart, everyone fucks up a mini or ten at some point.
>>94725565Part of mastering any skill is learning how to repair mistakes when you make them without the project being ruined.
>>94725565you generally highlight after shading to re-brighten. If you think it's really fucked you can always clear off the paint with rubbing alcohol and a toothbrush and try again.
>>94725638Cool orks, what's your skin recipe?
>>94725565As a general rule:>Base coat>Wash, enough for it to pool in recesses>Incremental lighter colors to build the highlights>Edge highlight and details like buttons
How does using metallic paint to prime work? Like, let's say I want to paint Argent Shroud Sisters of Battle, and I wanted to use a rattle can of silver spray paint from GW or Army Painter or something to get the primary color down. How would darker colors, like black and brown, work? Or lighter colors, like white and red and blue, work? What about skin colors? Will they appear sparkly and shiny?I want to make it as quick as possible, but I don't want an army of Emma Frost clones.
>>94725672It's the eavy metal one, albeit they execute it a heck of a lot better:https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=R-Khi-gkXc4
>>94725733>How does using metallic paint to prime work? You have to be prepared to paint over the parts that are not supposed to be that colour after it dries. Admittedly, there isn't much on Lord-Commander Dante that *doesn't* begin with Retributor Armour (gold), but you'll probably find yourself painting over things like faces, hair, cloth, and guns with a base paint like Abaddon Black, Mephiston Red, or Averland Sunset. In fact, when I painted my Dante, I used the Retributor spray for the backpack and almost the entire body, but since his left leg is attached to the base topper, I actually but in sub-assemblies and sprayed the base and leg with a light grey primer and painted Retriubtor Armour from the pot over the leg.
>>94725818>built in sub-assembliesLike this
>>94725325You should drink them and see if they have turned alcoholic yet.
>>94725818Okay, so basically after I spray it on, paint another primer/base coat/whatever you want to call it to negate the shiny effects of the metallic? That's doable.I'll certainly paint in subassemblies, I tend to paint that way anyways, but I have some Iron Hands who I got for free that are already assembled and painted, so they'll be more difficult. My plan for them is to paint thinned down black on the armour so that it ends up a sort of metallic black. Might look like trash but I wanna give it a whirl.btw that's a sexy Dante. You really did the model justice.
>>94716966GSW Psychotic Illusions. The idea will be the red side is house Krast, with the cameleoline decloak effect in between, transitioning to Alpha Legion+Dark mech /myguys/.Pic is what I'm using as inspiraton

>>9472518540k doesn't have anything good to kvetch about lately, so they're getting bored. Hell, one of the usual suspects just put out a video crying about how a competition is competitive. you know it's gotta be getting bad if they're scraping the bottom of the barrel that hard.
>>94725185/40kg/ is pretty nice to me when I post my models there but holy shit these people argue and shitpost so much. Really makes you appreciate /wip/
>>94726041Yeah there are people who care more about what's happening around the game. The trench crusade general is just as bad. Some people in there just want to argue about the religion or the world and what is or isn't realistic about the state of nations in the world. Now that the models are out, hopefully it'll be more painting.
Base coat done. This is gonna be good practice for layering, I've got quite a way to go to lighten the skin up, but I think it's a good starting point.

Is silver a good "sponge stipple" for gunmetal painted models?
>>94727320If you're trying to highlight, sure. If you're trying to do chipping go for a black or dark grey.
Had a spare 40 mins so I figured I'd try glazing this dorf's cloak. Went ok for a couple of layers, but the brightest wasn't thin enough so I had to bring it back down with a medium layer. Also ignore whatever is going on with the back of the cloak, I can't remember if that was a priming issue, print issue or glue accident.
>>94727263The wash missed a spot between the plate loincloth and his left knee.

Finished some assault squad lads and a tactical test scheme
>>94725565It didn't even look that good to start with. You are playing guard you should have 200 other minis to use to get good at this.

>>94727792I will. It's my first larger scale models and I dont have much experience with layering so I can't guarantee quality but I'm hopeful. If it goes really well I might print another one at an even larger scale. This one is about the size of a soda can standing on her rock. The figure scale one i have the files for is way bigger.
>>94727675could use feedback on this Risen armor, I’m planning on a 30k DA army eventually using this scheme. Aiming for a deep Sable Black that reads green faintly
Back in town to open a delayed box from SS, and I gotta say this is an amazing haul Brooklyn anon. I’m stoked to try out mythic America with a friend, and the (not pictured) black and white cookies were a huge hit. Happy new year!
>>94727877I'm thinking of doing something similar, I have mainly army painted, speed paint style etc, want to have some models to really paint slowly and practice onWas thinking of either a coomer model or some GW models I like, was considering a box of Bladeguard or Freeguild Command Corps
>>94728102Well if you have a printer I can definitely recommend twin goddess minis for good coomer sculptures that aren't too overly complicated.

https://youtu.be/BiNrQac6DKI?t=765So apparently the John Blanche paints will eventually be available individually. This means that flesh wash (now warm skin shade) will after a time no longer be a boxed paint exclusive. Now we just need mid brown back. >inb4 it is actually sepia toneAn anon disproved that email a while ago.Pic related.

>>94719146Thanks!The cobbles are milliput with a texture roller. I tried with GS first but it wasn't soft enough. The texture roller was dirt cheap off temu and had that shitty 3D printer parallel lines texture, but it didn't come through too badly, and where it did I just used some flock.I saw the green and black colour scheme in a youtube video and loved it for the same reason. On a few of these there's dark brown, black, and bandages with a brown wash, and it all ends up being a waste of time when it looks the same>>94719565This.I was becoming burnt out on this 20 man warband, though the cutting off of shield arms and heavy GSing was a big factor in this. Thought I might want to do the whole skaventide side, but I'm still turning away from large army games.I'm big on Mordheim and Blood Bowl for the same reasons - 10-20 minis, each slightly unique, and with stat progression meaning the games matter. Also Necromunda, but only ever played one game.Should probably look into Kill Team, but I am dubious.
There's just something about cultists, man.

Can anyone recommend a good base Rosewood paint? I am currently using a mix of Vallejo earthbrown and red, something like 60/40 mix, but I'd like to find an out-of-the-bottle solution.

My good friend from Colorado. After more than a month customs at least gave me the package. Sadly, they took any edible thing you culd put in there.I really like the models but you had made me think now about gettin broterhood of mutants for mcp and keep up my necromunda games! The skulls will have their righteous place among many bases and scenery. Finally I wasn't expecting you going the extra mile and translate the card to my local language, not spanish but valencian, this was a very warming adittion to the gift.Sorry it took so long, customs sucks ass.Worry not, in Spain we also get to celebrate on January 6th the coming of the three wise men so it came at a perfect moment.

I just cant see how Gundum of all japanese franchises should suddenly appeal to someone who likes Space Marines.the gunpla stuff has been gaining some traction with warhammer hobbyists, it's better value and better engineering, some uk hobby stores have been stocking gunpla and bandai invited a few "influencers" to take part in their yearly model competitions. Personally, I used to collect gunpla and I'm happy to pick up a new kit or two, I find working with GW models a bit easier but I'm eager for them to get more competition to maybe slow the constant price increases
