First Malifaux figure painted.I tried blending some stuff on the coat and scales to varying degrees of success. Made me realize that the reason people buy so many paints instead of blending is because it's such a pain in the ass.I continue to have my love/hate relationship with these models. This guy has alot of cool details, but the anchor on his hat is super small and I keep noticing the botch glue job I did on the legs. Definitely going to look into pinning if I do anymore malifaux figs in the future, I already have a hobby drill lying around. Also stripping a bunch of old figs in the background. It's a huge pain to do, so I'm gonna end up getting a ultrasonic cleaner because I have about a hundred more figs to strip + bits and a lead on some Eldar I might be able to nab.

What do people use guitar strings for
>>94785176playing guitar
>>94785187can't argue with that
Been working on another tree today
>>94785176>What do people use guitar strings forIf you can keep them tightly wound, they make decent power cables and mecha-dendrites.
coming along nicely, i think the gold on the axe could be much better
>>94785176Good for pinning too if you can drill very fine holes. I broke a hand off a metal model once and managed to drill into both the wrist and hand and only a .10 gauge string fit the holes.
How do I get ultra thin brushes to actually paint? I imagine its paint consistency issue, but basically my super thin brush fails to actually leave paint on the model unless I pick up way too much of it, which just makes a blotch. I'm afraid to make too thin paint as it will seep up to the root of the bristles and fuck it up.
>>94785459you don't need a thin brush, you need a sharp one. the tip is what really matters. if you try to use a super thin/tiny brush it doesn't have enough belly to hold any appreciable amount of paint, which is why you're having a hard time transferring it onto the mini.
>>94785459It's drying on the brush.
>>94785459Those ultra thin brushes are a scam. You need a brush with a big belly and a thin point or it just dries on the brush instantly. Then you flood the brush with paint and it pools onto the model.
>>94784789If I were you I'd be drinking the paint water as well.
How do I attach a small sword to a minis hip, there is not a lot of contact area between them so the plastic glue is not working. Do I just use super glue?
>>94785516>>94785578You guys are falling into the midwit part of the curve. Small brushes do have utility and can be useful for certain small details where larger bellied brushes would risk getting paint on adjacent edges.I guess David Perryman just paints with this brush because he doesn't know what he's doing? Meanwhile all you hear if people recommend W&N S7 is >DON'T GET THE MINIATURE ONES! THEY'RE A SCAM!Take care of your brushes and it's fine, and there is utility to small brushes some of the time.>>94785532This is probably correct. But there are too many reasons it might be happening to give a straightforward answer, and yes a brush with a bigger belly can be one of them. So can humidity, or if you have a fan on, or which paints you're using (i.e. white)>>94785459My fix for when I'm trying to get the paint to flow off a brush and the very fine tip is drying (usually painting the dot of white glint on an eye, despite a normal bellied brush), is take a damp brush and run it over the part you're painting, not enough for any real water to be on the part, but to have a minuscule film of water that isn't really 'wet' and won't flow anywhere but just enough to give it a sheen, then quickly paint your tiny detail, the damp surface will bridge the surface tension and paint will flow off the brush without spreading out (as long as there's not too much water on the piece) - that reminds me, flow improver can also help (or a minuscule amount of dish soap) to break the surface tension if it's that that's keeping it on the brush and not the tip drying.
>>94785681you could gently shave some of one of the surfaces so that there is more contact, or make a little connecty bitty out of greenstuff?... Or just use super glue, yes.
>>94785681Tiny ball of greenstuff between the piece and the model. Or sprue goo if you have it to increase the contact area.

Just finished kithashing some miniatures for a dnd campaign I'm in where the PCs turn into items and buff the party if the real life player can't make it.

>>94786039T-that's literally how the meme works...?>smaller brush is smaller>nooooo! small brushes don't hold liquid properly! etc. etc. You need a big brush with a big belly, all that matters is the tip sharpness!>smaller brush is smaller
>>94785975The idea is that our characters are actually magic items that morph into our physical forms. If someone can't make it to the session, there character returns to there item form and can be picked up and used by someone else in the party. The items buff the player pretty substantially like being able to fly or making 18-20 critical rolls. It's kind of an experiment the DM is doing to figure out a way to not have the campaign come to a screeching halt if someone can't make it. I do all the painting because I have a little bit of talent
>>94786053I honestly have no idea what the you're talking about, but if I have to caveat my advocacy for big belly brushes with "unless its too large to fit where you want to paint" the reader is beyond help anyway.

Not a mini, but a wip (pls don't send me to the /smg/ gulag).Neat story with this one is that the squadron commander's wife was found out to be Jewish. Upon hearing this Goering stripped them of their prestigious "Pik Ass" (ace of spades) emblem and ordered all their planes have a red ring painted onto their white cowling (which in effect looked pink). In protest the pilots/squadron support staff stripped the vehicles of the swastikas (I still need to paint in a crude "coverup" on the tail section where the swastika would have been).
>>94786455>glue fumes?I use tamiya super thin for 99%, it's capillary action allows for such minute amount to be used, because the paint actually goes where it needs to be. Never had any issues with glue fumes.
>>94786492I use the gorilla glue gel and when I get to the end of a pot I have to start getting it out with a dowel and slathering it instead of just squeezing which means that the volume of application gets somewhat larger so over a few hours of assembly it kind of adds up and I don't notice how dizzy I am until I step away.
>>94786391Let's see.
>>94786527>gorilla glue gel>don't notice how dizzy I am until I step away.any chance you're getting dizzy from shortness of breath? prolonged exposure to CA glue can result in an acquired allergy that causes you to have an asthmatic response to the fumes

>>94787656I've been learning to do that on a bigger model recently, but not sure I really want to invest the time to do it on a whole bunch of smaller scale stuff just yet. Trying to get this and another team done for my two leagues starting up in a month or so.

What's the best way to clean up that white chemical reaction from super glue? I did some basing yesterday and now a few models have that white ring. I'm trying to only have to clean it once so I don't expose the paint to anything because I haven't varnished yet.

>>94790956>>94790967There's no truly rust-proof steel. Stainless steels are simply more or less corrosion-resistant, how much varies a lot with the exact alloying elements added and whatever heat treatment (intentional or not) the steel may have gotten. How's AP fanatic white compared to vallejo? Other than citadel or maybe AK/TTC for twice the price that's all that's nearby
>>94792605I use both Vallejo model/game and AP. I like them a lot both. AP paints are generally a bit thiccer, but I would say that they are about the same regarding other qualities.
>>94792682Any major difference coverage wise? How do the usual suspects compare in that regard?
>>94792690Coverage-wise, it obviously depends on the color. If I were to generalize, I would say that AP is comparable to Citadel paints. I was just thinking about my previous post, and there is definitely one weakness I would say about AP; they lack deeper, darker colors, in my opinion. I think this is being resolved with new colors being released, but still, for example, for dark greens, I use mostly the Vallejo Model because AP is usually too bright/light. Also, the finish tends to be more satin-ish, but I don't really care about that since I varnish everything. But it might matter to you.
Made a bit of progress on the tree today
>>94792744I have a suspicion that vallejo's weird texturing and airbubbling issues that I've been having are from how matte they are so I'd welcome satin. I think my dark vallejos are "fine" with a little effort or even some ink, but brighter colors are kind of desaturated and experience those earlier problems more.

It's simply a black primer with the RL blue grey (I forget the numerical code) sprayed over in thin layers, going panel by panel until I'm happy with the result. Currently this is not done yet, this is now gloss varnished, decalled and gloss varnished again (thin layers), painting the wheelwell next (forgotten but suits me fine to do at this stage) then oil paints, then assembly of the loose parts (gunbarrels, undercarriage etc.) And then finally a satin varnish, which I may or may not sand back depending on the result. It is a great kit available for less than 10 Euros.
>>94793114>>94793114Without pressure*
I should probably finalise the scheme before starting on the other trolls, but fuck it, I want to get the bulk of the work out of the way now.
>>94793114How do you get the decals to go into those panellines?
>>94793132Use a decal setting liquid (like MicroSol), if that isn't enough on its own then gently push with a toothpick or something when the decal is soft from the liquid.
>>94793132I apply cooking (white) vinegar onto the decals after application. Then I use a non curved blade (e.g. xacto) to push them into the panel lines after they have set, I don't really care if they get cut in this process. I then apply vinegar again and let dry overnight, after which a gloss varnish is applied. The reason I don't care about the decals being cut on the panel line or simply being pushed into them, is because I go over the panels with brown/black oil pains anyway, the important part is simply that the panel groove is there.
>>94793121Winging it is way more fun, anyway. Nice airbrush work for the base coats.
>>94793121God I love trolls. Are there any good non-GW trolls? I feel like I haven't seen any. I don't want to buy GW but their trolls are so good.
>>94793171>>94793154P sure microsol is diluted acetone and microset acetic acid (vinegar). I don't much like using microsol ever since it it ate into my paintjob. Sure, I likely didn't properly gloss beforehand, but still. Like other anon I also use vinegar instead of microset.
>>94793225I still have never gotten a straight answer what the fuck vinegar is supposed to do to help decals set or position more easily. Microsol I get, but wtf is microset supposed to actually do vs water?

>>94793708Oh right, yeah I mean the paint job on the cloth is messy but it's probably not done yet and the cloth itself is messy, but that makes sense because it looks like it's just sort of blowing around his feet and weapon.
>>94793730... it is just blowing around his feet and weapon. correct. mini's scythe is broken & needs a support below I reglue it back together. and the mini snapped off at the ankles previously. I'm probably gonna glue some skulls onto the cloth and cape. so it looks like some flying skulls are following their king around.I don't understand your point...messed with this d00d a bit. might add bronze to cannon on some high points. dunno.
>>94793215I like this one from Reaper I've got, though it's a tad expensive for a single mini so I'm probably not gonna get more. https://www.reapermini.com/search/troll/latest/44002They've got a few nice troll models, some that are very in line with the more cartoonish look the GW ones have.
>>94793772>I don't understand your point...I wasn't the one that said it was messy originally. I was just trying to explain why he might have said it. He'll have to answer himself.
>>94793772What I meant is the paintjob on the cloth is a bit messy unless of course it's intentional. That's just how it reads to me
>>94793790That's still half of what I can get GW trolls for while they are on sale, but they are never in stock anyway. Oh actually, 3D prints. I can just get my usual not-Warhammer 3D print store to print some trolls that look like GW ones for around 11 USD per troll.

Hey folks, got a brief question about drybrush recommendations. Recently I’ve noticed my e.l.f. brushes I use have started to wear down. I’ve been in the hobby for a few years now and, while I do use this technique less than my traditional brushes or airbrush, I was wondering if it’s time to invest in some more proper drybrushes. I know there are the fancy Artis Opus drybrushes (that are essentially rebrands from Rosemary & Co.) but even with the higher-level of care/time I put into my painting process I still don’t feel I need to spend $125 on a set of them — especially since I don’t do slapchop of anything that requires it extensively. Has anyone found any success with cheaper, but still solid tools?
what settings do you guys use for inks through an airbrush (psi, ink to thinner ratio, etc)?
>>94795644I just leave my airbrush at like 25psi and overthin everything so I don't have to worry about it. as long as I do really fine coats.
>>94795629Don't get army painter ones. I made that mistake. They seem nice at first, but they are very cheeply produced. IPA melted the glue holding the bristles in instantly.
>>94795651im just getting that annoying pooling going on which is quite frustrating
>>94795654That’s good to know! I hate that apparently the Artis Opus ones are solidly-produced, which means I probably will bite the bullet and order them during a sale in the future but I was curious what experiences others had first.
>>94795629The cheap aliexpress dry brush set work fine
>>94795629Juan Hidalgo plugs the artify dry brush set often, it's basically just the artis opus set but for 25 bucks, I think any round bulb goat hair ones you find even on aliexpress should work though
Why or how are "drybrushes" better than just a virtually costless makeup brush?
>>94795745They use different bristles, think drybrushes tend to be stiffer, whether or not they're better is up to preference
>>94795223Did you base them before you put the models there?
>>94795629>>94795733I have them and they're pretty solid. Upgraded from a synthetic set in the same design and the improved wicking of the natural hair is pretty immediately apparent. One thing to be aware of though: they shed a good bit of hair when new and will still drop one or two every now and again once they're worn in.
>>94795658Spraying too much at once. If you have a chuck tighten it down a turn or two, test on a plastic spoon or test mini.
Does anyone have experience buying large(20+ and above) paint bundles?I've been using the Valejo 10-set for a couple of minis and am looking to expand my collection since mixing paints is a chore and I need a few misc. colors(a gray, a darker red, a browner yellow, a magenta). I considered just buying paints I need per-project, but I also have a large pool of test minis now and I'd like to experiment on a larger range.Pro Acryl came to mind first, but I've heard good things about Army Painter's bundles.
What's the tl;dr for achieving the "box art" look like pic rel? I can't quite replicate it and I can't figure out what elements they use to achieve it.
>>94795863I have pro acryl's starter set. It's good and all, but obviously depending on what you're painting any set is going to come with colors that probably aren't in the palette of what you're trying to paint. But I use pro acryl more for specific individual minis, not anything that has to be an exact color match, so it's not really to get around mixing in this case it's just because PA's paints are generally nicer.I know some people are anti-paint kit, but I think a good option if you can afford it is a starter set, and then the specific dedicated paints that are the main things you need right now. That way you don't run into a stupid problem where you're like>fuck, I didn't realize I wanted to paint the belt brown on my ultramarine and I only thought to get blue and black and no browns/orangesAny decent starter set will cover most of your bases, but you definitely won't touch many of them very often.
>>94795791i realised that the ink i was using (daler rowney) had a thick layer on the bottom of the glass bottle that needed to be scraped off, even with no thinner i noticed it was coming out looking like shit. should be fine nowive started to fiddle with that chuck, its a H&S which has a bunch of suggestions for each setting (prime, zenithal, etc)
>>94794188I do in fact do thatWhat do you use to dry your brush each time you switch paints?
>>94795893>Any decent starter set will cover most of your bases, but you definitely won't touch many of them very often. That's interesting.Right now I'm painting Malifaux gangs as my first "Fuck around and find out" project and, given it's a heroic skirmish game with flexible army building rules, color matching isn't a huge deal and I want to work with a bunch of different paints to get a hang of the basics like blending(easier if I can pull out three paints as a base, highlight, shadow color) and what different layers do over each other, like yellow over brown.(citadel painting style) After this I'll work on a Killteam/Warcry(depends on what the local stores run more frequently) team where I'll probably buy specific colors.
>>94795938Rub water off on your hand then suck your brush and lick it to restore the tip. Changed the way I paint completely.
>>94795873Airbrush and lots of blending.
>>94795863I bought that box and bought the metallics later, pretty good paints with a nice selection in the box. Mahogany, dark blue grey, burnt red/orange, and titanium white are all great, only iffy one is orange.
>>94795952you don't need an airbrush to get smooth blends on minis that small. It's honestly more about patience and being neat.
>>94795989Sure, it can be done.. but that's not how they do it.
>>94796018I honestly wouldn't be surprised if for some idiotic reason gw didn't give airbrushes to the eavy metal team
>>94796041They have their own and use non GW paints as well. They're doing a job, so they're gonna be efficient and not spend a lot of time blending by hand if they don't have to.
I recently got a pigma Sakura 100 micron tip pen for scripts and banners and I'm wondering if I need to do anything special for varnishing them Other than giving them ample time to dry

>do not have skin color>its fucking over>wait>have white and brown>mix it>get PERFECT skin color>mfwI wish I would've thought of it earlier. Mixing colors can really save you money too.
What about orange, red and purple?
>>94796327Yeah, just hard to get the exact same color twice, so if you're painting uniforms of some kind, it looks off. Fine for things like skin or hair color though, as those are varied anyway.
>>94796332What about them?

>>94795863I've bought the AP 50 paints set, the one with the paint holder. It's bretty good, imo, though there are way too many purples/pinks for me.
>>94796354Its not very hard to right down how many parts per paint used and then consistently color match, or you know just color matching against one you already like. I dont mix everything but I despise triad painting and get all of my highlights and shadows from universals.
>>94788372After looking at them for a while I think the pink colour is kind of not good. I'm thinking of changing the blades to gloss black and removing the flowers...
>>94796583Or maybe silver blades with clear black over it???
>>94796583I think the flowers are good for how well the contrast with the blue on your suits. But I'm not sure if the pink on the blade works.
>>94796598Mm.. Yea I'll try repainting the blades and reassess the flowers. Do you think orange or red flowers might look better than pink?
>>94796611Nah I think the soft pink of those flowers is perfect for the blue. I think red or orange might be too 'warm'.
>>94796480Show me. https://color.method.ac

>>94795766I added the texture materials after the minis and before priming.

>>947967231, maybe 5.
>>94796583>>94796598>>94796634I agree with anon, the pink flowers complement the blue on the mechs very nicely. But yeah the pink blades aren't working. Not because of the color choice necessarily, but the paintjob on the blades simply isn't up to par with the rest of the models honestly. They're not bright enough, they look unfinished compared to everything else. I'd try pushing the highlights way further on the blades before repainting if I were you, might get them looking really good with just a little bit more effort
>>947967231 and 4
>>94796735Any good tutorials or examples of cool blade effects? I might as well spend a bit of time seeing as it's kind of the commander and his unit eh... I had an idea to do gloss black like an unusual shiny black onyx/obsidian. But could do a glowy power blade / lightsaber, but the rest of the models are too bright to pull off OSL I think..
>>94796723Green & blue look the best here, but I think you might get the blades looking good with pink too if you simply push the highlights brighter and maybe so some pink/magenta NMM on the edge of the blade.

>>94796751https://youtu.be/j9t_u3qA-xw?si=KYlqgbpHFe7x-CITThis one could work. I think a simple NMM effect on the blade with whatever colors you fancy would look really amazing. That giant blade edge is practically begging for some NMM
>>94796732>>94796749>>94796760Green is winning. What about nmm / gradient, and glowing letters, all painted grayscale, then using the same contrast as the cacti? It's striking scorpion contrast I think.

>>94796790Alright fuck it I'll do blue NMM, I have decided against pink, to keep the model cold and the base warm. Green would blend too much visually with the cacti, especially on the bodyguard with downward blade . But the rest of the army isn't getting any such special attention!

>>94796907A paint shaker anon, we dont buy unitasker products here.
Robo space dorfs before oil wash. I really like how these turned out but next time I'll be more carefull with the primer, it's too chunky.
>>94796895>blue NMMSounds like a solid choice.>But the rest of the army isn't getting any such special attention! You'll probably end up having to do blue NMM on all blades in your army to have it looking nice and cohesive. It's easier on smaller blades anyways, less surface area to glaze so the color blends don't need to be as smooth and pristine as on the giant blades.
>>94796919Only 4 blades in the army I think so should be fine.. For lenses and widshields of the gunships etc I'm just gonna do solid black with gloss varnish (ardcoat) because I can't be bothered.

>>94798205Okay, that is wider than the picture suggests. Consider my post irrelevant then.

I screwed something up and I'm not sure exactly what. I did new molds recently with blue stuff, as usual, but turned out that I had both some kind of "holes" and tiny "drops" as you can see on pic right face. I didn't noticed that while making mold itself. What could that be? Parts were clean, pressing block present, BS wiped after taken out of water. I don't understand.
Do you think this effect would be interesting to try on minis? Think for something like Eldar gems or similar things.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoXw390cOXU
Am I a worthy son of Sanguinius?
>>94799029noset the model down and stop posting sideways images and then maybe
>>94798928Most gems will likely be far too small for this to work all that well. Paint something bigger and, well, as fancy as it could look it'll also most likely simply end up looking like a plastic toy covered in fancy paint, instead of selling the illusion of a grav tank or mech or whatever. Ie rather missing what's usually the point of miniature painting.
another treasure from the bottom of the 6 month high pilegoblin wolf chariots
Imperial Knight enjoyer working on this stupid sexy Callidus.Def the smallest model I've tried to paint. Just blending in some colours on the body suit after a zenithal atm. I didn't attach the hair as I don't think it looks great.
