But real life presents you with much more visual information than what you explicitly focus on in the moment. Especially in unusual situations, like industrial accidents, war etc. people are surprised by the "weird", unexpected things they see or by how certain things look totally different from how they imagined it. Working with actual physical materials at least always gives you the actual, natural behavior of that material. Even with a perfect AI trained on data from explosions, fire, whatever, you'd still have humans signing off on the best result. With no immediate feedback from reality to inform their decision.

One thing that people don't take into account when analyzing Bam's deterioration is the effect of Ryan Dunn's death on Bam. Sure Bam did do drugs and drink before Ryan died in that car crash but after word Bam basically went into overdrive with alcohol and substance abuse. It's actually kind of understandable, his best friend of like 20 years died tragically and Bam probably felt like he a piece of himself died when Ryan did so basically just said "fuck it" and decided to self-immolate with drugs and alcohol. His struggles with getting his life back together after all that are perfectly reasonable. Ryan Dunn's death literally broke him.
