Hello, everybody. This is my first time in a horror thread this year because I've been busy so I wondered if anybody could help me to identify this year's films that fit the following annual horror templates:

1. The modern reboot of a classic.
2. The unwelcome sequel to a new film from last couple of years that properly kicks off the franchise with diminishing returns.
3. The European horror film with a ton of buzz that's touring the festivals and drops on a streaming service near the end of the month.
4. The hidden gem from decades ago that for some reason everyone watches this year.
5. The new A24 film with rave reviews that's a prolonged metaphor for domestic abuse/incest/trauma.
6. The new film from a smaller streaming service that's surprisingly funny/scary.
7. The new Asian horror film that has people shitting their guts in terror.
8. The new film that's tearing the thread apart as people either call it a masterpiece or an astroturfed turd (this could also be the same film as number five).

I figure with the answers to these questions I can skip the messing about part and jump right into the conversations.

Howdy doody fagobites. This one was a solid little movie. It was low budge but didn't look cheap, the main girl's boobs were very nice, the plot was fun, and it struck the proper atmosphere more often than not. Marks taken for bare minimum characterization, some clunkiness in the goings on, and (probably for budgetary reasons) not going all in with some of the climaxes you were expecting. P.S. You will have to google the main girl's boobs on your own because the movie doesn't deliver.

This has to hold the record for horror property most redone. Why do we need this? De Palma's version is enough, is this really a story that needs to be updated for modern sensibilities/times?
>>
>>204726992
It writes itself, and you know it. Carrie will be black, the bullies will all be White, and it will be the perfect vehicle to push the ideology. The whole thing will be a metaphor for the way black or alphabets are terribly oppressed and marginalized by evil Christian, White people.

It's quite possibly the most pro-feminist slasher. Think about it, the killer is someone NOBODY in-universe or amongst the audience would've suspected.

And quite frankly, I can't blame the killer. They just HAD to reopen the camp.

Part 1 has really good photography, genuinely. Camp Crystal Lake looks gorgeous in it.

Honestly the whole atmosphere was amazing. I'm a huge detective and mystery fan so when I first saw the original, I had deductions that the killer was someone so benign that nobody would've suspected that they were a threat. Especially in the intro clip where the 2 counselors were caught making out and then got murdered.

Plus seeing Kevin Bacon get murdered like that was pretty funny.
>>
>>204728480
I assumed (only having seen 1-2 movies with jason previously, and that being in the very early 2010s) that the flashback in the 50s was jason as a kid and that was why they reacted like that.

>>204728269
it needs to be believable within context.
she was apparently raising kids up and nailing them to doors with arrows, and then could barely weakly swing at the final surviving girl and got bested by her.
it's not unbelievable that she would, or be able to, kill someone, but the ways in the movie were to me.

>>204728293
I thought kevin's death was pretty cool, and beyond the "my entire personality is making le quips" guy the characters were quite good
I was just let down there was no reveal with Jason, but I suppose I'll have to wait for the next(?) movie for that.

Watching this movie feels kind of like watching Halloween III to me, I expected something and got negatively subverted by it not being there.

I like 6 but hated how they made Jason into this superhuman zombie. Liked the return of Tommy and his plan to defeat Jason. Speaking of which Part 5 I could respect how it explored being a slasher survivor. Realistically that's how fucking traumatized Tommy would've been.

I can respect 7 for Jason getting absolutely wrecked.

Never cared for Jason on a boat.

Jason Goes to Hell reminds me a lot of Freddy's Dead. Both 90's entries that ended the 80's franchise involving a relative of the killer via mystical ways. I think that's why we had that scene with Freddy's glove in the end.

Anyways:
>actors feel like people pulled from the streets at random

I just got back from the at home kinoplex where we watched Bruiser. I had higher hopes for this than others I've seen so far and it was a major disappointment. The script is god awful, the acting performances were bland (not even Peter Stormare could save his character), the whole thing felt like a cheap early 90s movie you'd catch on HBO at 2 am despite being released in 2000 (likely due to the Canadian production). I hated everything about it. Tom Atkins was the best part of the movie even if Romero gave him some of the stupidest anachronistic dialogue. And speaking of Romero, this was more Diary of the Dead Romero than it was Day of the Dead Romero. Captain Rhodes would have had Steel shoot this man on the spot if he saw this abomination.

Part 1 is a great movie in the sense that you can walk it on a calm, quiet, summer night, and be very immersed in it due to the sheer sense of place that the film gives off. The cinematography in it is probably the best in the whole franchise.

Hey friends. I want to say something that barely counts as /hor/, but also don't want to put in /x/ nor think it belongs there.
Close before the lockdown measures were implemented, or we even thought western regimes would go to such lengths in a coordinated effort, so I am talking autumn to winter of 2019, I kept getting suggested on the youtube related section the song "silent running" by Mike and the Mechanics. Which I had never listened to before, nor were my tastes identical to that style of music.

>It's still a pretty good early slasher.
It has no excuses for being that boring, though.
My Bloody Valentie and Pieces also came extremely early and still deliver vastly more on multiple premises: cooler killer, cooler deaths, way more gore, more nudity as well so everything that made 80s slashers

I don't think the first F13 is a bad movie, just that frankly it's quite underwhelming compared to other very, very early slashers. Oh, and I forgot The Burning as well.
But then again, stuff like My Bloody Valentine & Pieces literaly mog even most other 80s slashers that came way later so perhaps they are the true exceptions.
Pieces might be cheesy af with loathsome script/acting but at least it does deliver on literally what it set to do, the kills, which are the best part of slashers besides some iconic villains.
A Nightmare on Elm Street is definitely a much better first entry than F13 though.

there's something indescribably comfy about a crew that goes out in the woods and shots the first 30/40 minutes of a slasher movie with seemingly no real plan for it other than 'maybe this guy pretends to drown because he is a joker' etc
