Late Night With the Devil is the first film in a while that I strongly disliked at first but which won me over by the end. Felt like Ghostwatch with all the subtlety removed in the early parts but then it just leans in and goes fully mental and I can appreciate that. Absolutely insane to shoot something like this on 4K digital though.
>>
Saw 1 is a classic
2, 3, and 6 are good, 6 being the best sequel to Saw
4, 5, and 7 are sort of bad but Hoffman saves them
The rest suck, I don't get why everyone loves Saw X

I am 7 minutes and 50 seconds into "Stream". The heroic boomer dad walked in on his silly son who was working his streaming gig (as 9 year old boys do) and explained to said that that you can't just pause a stream. In the meantime, a presumably Indian woman was also on his computer screen, presumably a streamer he streamed while streaming. Then it was revealed that the 9 year old boy had 1211 people watching his stream.

Probably the worst 10 minutes of any horror movie I've ever seen. Suspension of disbelief completely olbiterated.

I saw SAW in the cinema, in 2004. It was the most hyped thriller. I was so stoked to watch it, I was relaying the plot to the taxi driver on the way back. That same year I also watched the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake although I wasn't 17 yet. From 17 to 20 I used to go to cinemas alone often.

I really wanted to like Stream, it has a great cast and a lot of the people involved from the Terrifier movies, but it felt like much less than the sum of its parts. The concept isn't terrible, the people watching the stream and betting reminded me of the Elite Hunting Club in the Hostel sequels. Egregiously awful child actor, 2/5 movie, but still mildly optimistic for the sequel because the sequel hook at the end was actually the best part of the movie. Also the tic tac toe kill was good.

>kiddo unironically asking me how I can tell
I have seen so much horror slop that I can tell how important a character is just by instinctively recognizing the main character syndrome in the way they act and how they're depicted on the camera shots. We call it instinct. I believe your generation calls it "vibes".
There was absolutely no plot twist in "Stream" that I haven't seen coming. In fact, the only "twist" was a lack of twists, I predicted that at best, some of the hotel customers would be also the killers, to rip off Scream. In example, the gay French gaymen, or some of the random no lines customers. Instead, the killers were just noncharacters.
I guess you're the kind of viewer who actually thought the father got killed when he went off screen and then came back.

There is one pleasant surprise about Stream that I do have to admit - coming into the movie, I was misinformed that this was another Leone movie. I was thinking to myself all the time "what the absolute fuck?", like the movie was as if he was incompetently attempting to rip off the style or Terrifier, while also combining some of its elements (playful killers, gory "creative" kills, killers don't say nothing, female stereotypes who don't die do die) with geneic horror slop tropes. But thankfully, I then realized that it was just part of the production crew from Terrifier that worked on this also. So at least it's proof that you cannot just take the crew that did the special effects and ... I dunno helped out with the lights... and recreate Terrifier but different. Even if you have Art's clown playing Art the guy wearing overalls.

This movie was kino through and through, an unexpected delight. Such a good psychological thriller with realistic characters, great screenplay, killer soundtrack, and a truly scary performance by the main actor. 10/10! It saw it as parental tragedy. Remember Frankenstein's mentor whose notes he stole to resurrect life? The mentor failed to properly rein in Frankenstein and in turn, Frankenstein's arrogance created the undead being. And what did that shitbag do? Shun away his creation like a parent does with their child.

This movie is quite possibly De Niro's most underrated role.

Rating system:
Excellent!
Worth a watch!
Good Job! Not Worth Watching! (well-made but pointless and dull)
Hot Garbage!

Grave Torture (2024) – I hadn’t seen a Joko Anwar in a while and was excited to hear about this one. Too bad it’s merely . . . Worth a single Watch. It’s based on the Islamic (extended hadith rules) concept of GRAVE TORTURE: in which you are physically punished by having your bones CRUSHED by angry angels in the grave *before* you even go to hell. A young brother and sister have their world uprooted when a suicide bomber *incidentally* kills their parents; it turns out the man had listened to recordings of honest-to-goodness GRAVE TORTURE, with agonized screams and stern angel speech and everything, and it drove him to martyr himself so he wouldn’t have to endure it. As an adult, the sister, Sita, becomes so obsessed with proving grave torture false (it’s the root of her life’s tragedy) that she gets a job at a nursing home -- and makes her henpecked brother get one at the associated funeral home -- so she can have first dibs on recording the sweet literal nothings of the clients who die.

The problem with this movie is that it feels BUSTED into pieces, and there’s nothing much to grab onto. The frame is a semi-Jacob’s Ladder, semi-Owl Creek Bridge thing where some part of Sita is caught in an interstitial realm, and she is fighting through nested realities that center around personalized torture -- which takes her a long time to even realize, though the viewer catches on early. While some of the individual scenarios involving the various KOOKY characters at the nursing home are kind of interesting . . . nothing really has weight or *presence* since almost everything you see is just a DISCIPLINARY ILLUSION.

2/2
Though not quite *dull*, Grave Torture nearly gets there in its two hours. It’s worth it for some of the more unique scenes, but really fails at being a WHOLE story since it picks one of the most tiresome fallbacks in the entire catalog -- and just hangs lots of random-seeming stuff on that skimpy frame. Anwar’s first and worst horror film, The Forbidden Door, did a lot of the same. “What’s real, viewer? What’s false? Here’s a sampler of horror imagery while you try to figure it out!” Grave Torture, however, is slightly better than the Forbidden Door. *Slightly.*

I feel like this is a third of a good script and two-thirds of a mediocre one mashed together (The Forbidden Door is like that, except it’s several BAD scripts in one). The best part is the beginning, after the orphaned kids first lose their parents and are sent to an Islamic school in the middle of the wilderness. There’s a primal sort of Hansel and Gretel dynamic going on, with the kids wondering how they’ll escape; the school is run by an oversexed HYPER MOLESTER; there’s a ghost of a dead boy in the forbidden tunnel to the west! But we never get the skinny on the dead boy. BLIP! Sita and Adil are adults now, and reality just has to EXPLODE into a million pieces, because . . . why not? It’s really kind of funny that the movie ends on a “Jack Chick: Islamic Edition” note, with apposite prayers scrolling across the screen and everything. But I suppose the director might intend this ironically.

Nah just hanging out with some buddies tonight. I've told this story here before but long story short, years ago I had a movies and chill date with a waitress I worked with at the time. She said she liked horror movies and to come over and bring something to watch. I asked her what kind of horror movies she liked and she said she liked extreme horror, so I went home and autistically Googled "best extreme horror films". What I now know is that she actually meant she liked "yucky zombie head explode haha", not actual extreme horror and depravity. Anyway, I showed up at her house with a USB drive with Martyrs and A Serbian Film (I'd never seen either before). We watched Martyrs and both really enjoyed it. After that we watched A Serbian Film and it just nuclear destroyed the vibes that evening. She probably still thinks I'm an absolute freak to be desu

Just watched Skinamarink for the first time and am interested in hearing people's opinions on it. It felt like Blair Witch Project in a lot of ways in that unless you're really keyed into the atmosphere and trying to decipher wtf is going on you'll find it very slow and boring with no payoff and I can understandthat viewpoint easily. I'm the weirdo on the other end though, I thought it was really good and enjoyed what it was going for, but I also just like the analog horror trend in general and watch shit like Local58, Gemini, Mandela Catalogue, etc. on YouTube, the stuff which this movie definitely took inspiration from. I did find moments of it genuinely disturbing too.
