Is there any Tales Of game worth playing? I was just looking at the Xillia remaster and the combat looks so funny, just anime characters running all over the screen yelling attack names (DEMON FIST! DEMON FIST!), terribly generic environments with tons of recycling, tons of time spent in menus, and you have to put up with all that for 50+ hours apparently. The cutscenes and dialogue were kind of fun. The other games look similar or worse except for Arise which seems quite different (looks better to me desu but I wanted to play a classic Tales first)

The characters of the first two games were written in a different time, by today's standards I'm sure you could find something to be offended by in the stable from the first two games. You could either make all of the characters bland thereby offending nobody or make all of the characters an offensive caricature, intentionally offending everybody. I would make the 4 characters a Maga republican, a special snowflake democrat, a shirtless post-op ftm transsexual and a pregnant amish woman.

The ugly fact that you need to accept is that this series became a victim of its own increasing stakes. The need to give players increasingly more impactful climaxes has ruined the quality of the writing and characterization. Contrived plots, overbearing characters with an abundance of gimmicks, and unsatisfying payoffs are rife now.

AA4 did the "dark age of law" so much better than 5 which wouldn't shut up about it. We need to ban gacha now. Real otaku games are being suffocated by these shitty FOMO-driven GaaS slot machine simulators monopolizing otaku spending. Gacha has an objectively negative impact on the market just by its existence, as it incentivizes a "race to the bottom" as everyone else is forced to adopt similar predatory monetization models just to keep up. This is not a moralfagging thing; gacha objectively lowers the standards for real games everywhere by being so much more successful for so much less effort in providing a good product. There is zero benefit to allowing it to stay and many benefits to getting rid of it like a cheater in a board game. During the Vita era, this stuff sold like 50k just in Japan. You can't blame everything on Sony/Nintendo/Steam censoring these games for their failure; because gacha has captured the Japanese market almost completely, these games which used to be made entirely for the domestic audience now have to look west to survive, and that means going through western cultural commissars. Gacha is as much to blame for the downfall of retail otaku games as platform censorship, an uncomfortable truth too many self-proclaimed otakus and defenders of these games are not willing to admit.
