The legacy console edition worked straight out of the box without the game breaking bugs bedrock had. Not to mention it was optimized for hardware as old as 2005/6. It was the closest thing to the original Java edition but with native controller support so I'd say in some aspects it was even better. It could have very well been the definitive edition of Minecraft if Microsoft chose to build Bedrock on top of it instead of abandoning it for the Pocket Edition codebase. After all they already had a full fledged C++ edition of Minecraft so why abandon that to build another one from scratch? The mere fact that programmers were able to add server support to it (even with crossplay) yet alone port it to Windows shortly after its source code was leaked yet proves that 4J Studios most definitely could easily have done the same. That's quite literally all they had to do aside from adding custom skin support. I cannot speak for others but that is what I was hoping for a decade ago.Time and time again I see successful franchises become a shadow of its former self simply due to poor marketing decisions. From Xbox to LittleBigPlanet and now Minecraft. It's truly sad. Even the PS4 could have been miles better than it was such as if they chose to build it on top of its predecessor like the Series X/S did with the Xbox One. Imagine being able to play all of your PS3 games natively on it.

The PS4 could not be built on top of the PS3 because PowerPC was effectively dead. Sony should have done more to bring PS3 games to the PS4 with emulation like Microsoft did with the xbone, but considering how hard the PS4 dominated that gen Sony probably felt they didn't have to.
