They made a trade off and decided we'll put most of our ressources into gameplay. Going in with zero expectations I was positively surprised honestly because they didn't even try to do something they couldn't have done with the little ressources they decided to put into writing. So if you just take character interactions as mildly enjoyable cringy slice of life and the story as a means to end you'll find yourself positively surprised at keypoints that do stand out like Morion. I think engage is mostly just considered so offensively bad because of wrong expectations and the vtumor artstyle.

If you ask me, I think on a technical and gameplay level, Ninja Gaiden (until 3) was at a far more advanced level. It's much smoother and the flow of action is more intense. DMC1 is notoriously stiff and 3 is pretty similar to 1, all things considered. It's not until 4 that they come close to NG4's polish, but unfortunately 4 is wracked with so much fucking bullshit and bad enemy design that makes it look worse. But DMC5 definitely found that footing and evolved the foundation DMC was built upon astronomically and easily clears past NG games. Not even NG4 comes close, but we'll never know what an NG4 led by Itagaki would be like.
