Their characterization doesn't have to be only in dialogue.

Tone careens between heavy when he's doing a training montage and his mind is full of doubt whether he can really get stronger or not, and fluffy when he does make some progress and gets to relax and have fun with his newfound level, and swings back when he gets a vibe check from something stronger than him.I hope that makes some sense.

But even the sex scenes are going to be planned to go a certain way.I say that to say that plot doesn't have to be a big overarching thing. It certainly can be, and often is. In the case of writing alongside the AI, have a concept of what has happened and how that could affect the future. It doesn't have to be fully planned, but knowing where a character arc can go can give you ideas for what to do to help direct the story. You can have concepts of plot beats to work through, either to guide the AI toward or to introduce into the story yourself. Even though it's inherently unstructured because AI, knowing what normal structure for the genre of story you're in can give you an idea for how to proceed.I'll put it this way. If you're starting with a prompt, that will likely have some concept, some seed of plot for the story to grow from. That's one place where you can start. Even the standard knight of Larion sets up a lot about the character, the setting, and what directions the story might go.
