gyrados EX is actually good. I thought he was bad in comparison to cards like Blastoise EX but having now played him for a while ive really come around to him.his strengths as a threat are not immediately apparent. first off he is a stage 1 pokemon rather than stage 2 to so he is much more consistently able to evolve and takes up less real estate in your deck, no chance of having 2 out of 3 pokemon from the same evolution line that don't connect (a basic and a stage 2, or stage 1 and 2 with no basic) this makes him a lot more consistent than a stage 2 option.the other big plus of being a stage 1 fully evolved pokemon is that he gets ups to 180 hp very fast so he cant get one shot at his vulnerable middle evolution like a lot of 3 pokemon Evo lines and can attack for a massive amount much faster than other option(with misty obviously.)all this in mind gyrados is actually pretty good and if it was comparable in raw power to stage 2 EX pokemon it would be too strong.

Pro tip: Surge still sucks. With the creation of Celebi and the improvement of M2, Pika decks are in a tougher spot. Surge’s targets are still crap as of the miniset. The new Raichu might be decent if you can get it built by turn 4 / 5, but that isn’t happening every game (and the payoff isn’t crazy). 60 damage is basically 0 in the Celebi matchup.Surge + old Raichu will still see play. Might be decent with Dedenne because big basics still run the show for now. A key para might let you push something into the 140/150 break point.
