I think we should ban libraries because they give people access to too many books. Readers would get a much richer experience from each book if they could only read fewer of them.

My console/computer collection is packed away in boxes under my dad's house. Since emulation is good enough, I haven't felt the need to dig them up.

Are there any benefits of using an old computer box to play retro PC games or am I just better off using a modern one?
My current box is a Dell. It has a motherboard inside, with a processor from Intel, as well as memory, a north bridge chipset, a south bridge chipset, a battery, BIOS ROM chip, pin jumpers, DIP switches, PCI slots, a GPU graphics card board, a sound board from a company called Sound Blaster, a CD-ROM for playing DOS-Roms, a heat sink, 2 fans as far as I can see, a floppy disk drive, a power supply unit, a PATA IDE SSD disk drive, LED lights on the front BUS driver, and a power button.

IBM PC was always shit so it's not worth it, also massive power waste for a fraction of the power you could get. Actually the bad thing is software, not hardware. Modern windows sucks and chugs the hardware.

Good catch. I just grabbed what was nearby and thought "yeah, that should fit" when I took the pic. I have a lot of those Corsair sticks (16) for I have no idea, so I thought they were from that old system. Here, these probably work with this board as I left them in the same box.

The benefit of a decicated box is you can install specialty software like steamos/cachyos/bazzite or anything else and optimize the computer for that purpose.

I use my primary computer for CAD and 3d printing in addition to games. I don't do any programming anymore.

the point of puzzle games is solving them yourself, NOT trying to finish them faster than other people by reading a guide
why do shump players hate anything that's not 100% action? do they hate thinking?
and even in the action department they cheat by using autofire
the mind of the shmup players is truly a mystery

Any of the Capcom ones are good and are well produced. The only real weak one might be Adventures in the Magic Kingdom for the NES. But it’s hardly bad. There’s two other Capcom Mickey games on the the SNES but one only came out in Japan but there’s a fan translation. Ducktales on the NES is considered a minor classic on the system. Darkwing Duck plays kind of like Mega Man. Check them all out really.

>And ill check out gone quackers. Should I play the gen 5 or 6 version??
The only version of Goin' Quackers that's worth playing is the PSX version.
Basically every version of the game has some unique stuff but the most important thing to know is that there's three main level sets: PSX, PC/N64/DC, and PS2/NGC. And the best one by far is the PSX exclusive levels.

Here we post stupid game mechanics.

I'll start, natures and EVs introduced in Pokemon gen 3
>natures
>oh you catched a new pokemon? Well there is a 2/25 is useful, a 21/25 is neutral and a 4/25 chance is fucking shit.
>EVs
>oh you used your physical attacker to beat that special attacker? Now he is gonna be weaker on the long run, you should have defeated 50 poochyenas before starting your adventure.

>it's difficult for any casual player to grasp how any of these things work.
i think that was precisely the point desu
the idea was, they KNEW some fags would get rly into this stuff. theyd inevitably rip the game apart and learn exactly how everything works, then try to game the system. and for that kinda fag, its pretty fun albeit needlessly opaque.
but most of the players were not that. most players were just kids using their starter and spamming the same move for the whole game. and the games are ez, so you CAN do that.

what they were prolly trying to avoid is a scenario like now, where everyone and their mother now knows about these things, and is worrying over what amounts to a fractional difference in a few stats. theres a reason they made the base game so ez, and the post-game so, so much harder. they were just trying to accommodate for the 2 very diff types of players

>>12255015
it depends. as far as showdown nowadays, i mostly just play gen 1 randos, cuz its just fun to sit down and play. and i def prefer that over the faster paced/minmaxxed gen3 and onwards. but thats for multiplayer, where you can just change all these things in the sim. for the actual game, its just the frontier where it matters. and even then, you can still not go full tryhard and succeed. about the only rly important stat imo to deal with right away is SPD, cuz its an "all or nothing" stat. youre either faster or slower. so just focus on getting that one up to "x" threshold or ignore it entirely if its a lax or whatever

stat exp wouldn't fix anything with what we have now. it's a less flexible system for pvp and was already much more tedious to max out than gen 3 evs. any mistake in ev training can be fixed with berries and getting a specific number of evs is trivial with pen and paper. but with how the stat exp rounding works with multiple party members, true minmaxing stat exp is extremely agonizing (see pic). back then there were only 2 builds - all 65535 or 0 attack for confusion damage, which is only achieved by a very autistic method killing over 30k magikarps. now trick room exists so there'd be 4 spreads for 0 speed. how the fuck would you minmax stat exp on something like reuniclus with 0 attack and 0 speed?
>>
>>12255043
Yes, they've been on record saying that the random base stats and unpredictable growth was deliberate from Gen 1, and was supposed to help make each Pokémon feel more individual.
One thing that was commonly understood about Gen 1 at least, was that jumping straight to level 100 by abusing infinite rare candies, resulted in a weaker Pokémon; the why was not so well known or understood in playground communities.
That's all irrelevant to the main story though, since the game is deliberately set up that you can just grind to high levels and steamroll through all trainers that cap around the level 60-70 range.

Gold and Silver introduced Pokérus, the mysterious faux-status condition that "accelerated growth", and was understood to be beneficial, and gave slightly more insight into how effort values worked.
As soon as Crystal version introduced the concept of battle facilities starting with the Battle Tower, where winning streaks and getting to the 50th battle was the goal, and earning Battle Points was a new kind of currency for rare and exclusive items, it became necessary to understand the mechanics and how to maximise stats at level 50 or 100.

Ruby and Sapphire introduced the Macho Brace, a held item, which promoted stat growth at the expense of a speed penalty, as well as the Effort Ribbon (and ribbons themselves), as a means of identifying if a Pokémon has fully allocated their effort values.
Emerald version introduced new effects for certain berries so you could raise friendship, and selectively reduce effort values for certain stats. The berry descriptions on the surface sound bad, but when you know about the concept of effort value allocations you know how good it actually is. It also introduced the "Pomeg glitch" though.

I could go on, like about power items and destiny knot breeding, bottle caps, nature mints, mirror herb, ability capsules, etc, but the point is they gradually introduced tools needed for building effective post-game teams.
>>
>>12249309
Do you fuck dudes?
>>
>>12255285
The Battle Tower you described for Crystal is how it worked in Ruby and Sapphire-onward. Crystal's was very different.

I'll tell you why 4 is bad as soon as this boss health bar finishes filling up
>>
>>12254959
> that doesn't any "that part" bullshit.
For people who actually played these games at the time, this kind of late-game issue had virtually no affect the overall opinion of the game. If you played Mega Man 2 enough to reach boobeam more than once in your life, you probably loved the game already and had played through the robot bosses and earlier wily stages many times. And if you thought boobeam was bullshit, you still just made sure to get there with extra lives and were still able to make it to Wily and beat the game.

Application of this kind of logic is how games lost their soul.
