What's "castlevania" about it?
>>
>>12253174
Exactly: it's an Ultimavania.
>>
>>12253185
KF has zero interactivity and the lames level design imaginable with minimal vertical. The fact that not even the ps2 KF matched the magic system of Ultima is just further proof how stunted the designer of it were and how forward thinking the Ultima devs were.

i played the SFC DQ1+2 version and i thoroughly enjoyed it as someone who's not huge on jrpgs

I played the NES version, same with DQ II. I know people on here usually prefer the SNES version but I'm kind of stubborn when it comes to DQ and FF and prefer to play the versions on the original console, warts and all.
>>
>>12253113
With DQ fans you can be sure that when they say they played DQ1-3 they mean the NES versions more often than not but this is absolutely not the case with FF fans. Whenever I want to discuss FF2 here for example I always specify that I'm talking about the FC version because no one here played that shit except for select few autists that I usually discuss FF with (I'm confident it's always the same people)

Creatively bankrupt. Only DMC and Ico offered something different actually DMC took a lot of inspiration from other games before but they were quite niche so it still felt fresh

He moves at light speed. I try to jump over him but he always moves right where I'll land. I try to spam attack as soon as I see him but he doesn't get stun so he'll either charge me or keep throwing the machete. No matter what I do, everytime he shows up in the street it's guaranteed I'll lose a big chunk of my health.

Yes. Follow these steps:
Turn on the game, then QUICKLY PRESS START-DO NOT WAIT AT ALL.
.
.
Then git gud.
>>
>>12253351
basically you need to get lucky and have some enemies on screen to let you know he's coming. when the screen stops scrolling, it's time to run away in the opposite direction. get inside the nearest cabin.
>>
>>12253471
Yeah you didn't beat it.
Things become much harder after day 1

>>12253351
Get a good weapon, get it fast.
When he appears in the streets, best option I have is to stick to a corner and deal as much damage as possible to make him leave.
But... When he's at half health, he will not run anymore.

Other than that, keep to fighting him inside when he makes his move. On Day 1 he only punches 1 or 2 times. Use the dodge (Down+Left/Right) and keep your fast characters alive. Kill enough shit and move enough and eventually you'll find weapons better than what you currently have.

Is it just me or is this game literally unplayable? I don't know what the fuck they did to the controls, Wave Race 64 controlled perfectly why did they change it? It feels so stiff an unresponsive, I genuinely feel like I have no control over the game most of the time.
>>
I thought it controlled pretty well.
I've jet-skiied hundreds of hours irl and as you go there are moments where you're skipping over the water like a sine wave then your boat sinks down and you gain "grip" so your throttle and steering have more impact when the boat's weight is pushing down so suddenly your steering might "catch" and send you that direction. The game replicates that. Maybe that's what you're dealing with?

Just beat the first game on the Sega Master System . Great RPG that still holds up well and is easily as good as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest on the NES.

I've already played through the 2nd game should I just skip 3 and go straight to playing the 4th though? I've heard 3 was made by a different team and isn't a good as the others

Phantasy Star 3 is a good game. I'll defend it. Yes it's dull ugly and sparse looking BUT

- it's well paced, no grinding needed to progress but not too easy either

- mythical tier OST

- ahead of its time features like branching paths, multiple endings, dynamic music, configurable psi powers, okay that's all the ahead of its time features

- very cool story with multiple twists and turns, incredibly satisfying revelations

- very imaginative enemies

- I'm going to say it again, the soundtrack is mythic tier, 15/10 "I am on a fucking fantastic adventure" music
>>
>>12251784
I don't remember which Phantasy Star game it was, but my first and only experience with the series was on some Dreamcast Jampack compilation thing.
(It was actually the first time I played Shining Force too. It really made me wish that I didn't miss out on all those games back when they were new. I really need to just sit and play through entire series for both of those)

>Fire Bam (FDS)

>Joust (NES port)

Best HAL game I've played is Adventures of Lolo (NES).
It's a level compilation of all the best levels from the Eggerland series up until that point, so unlike most puzzle games, there's no "that one bullshit puzzle" puzzle. All the puzzles are good and so is the difficulty curve. It's challenging but I was never frustrated and never felt the need to look up anything in a guide. Even when I was stuck I was experimenting and learning things I used to solve later puzzles. I especially love the ending. Easy Top 5 NES game for me.

The worst I've played is Arcana. I'm pretty sure Arcana is the worst RPG I've played all the way to the end.
I was super excited because it was made by HAL and it has anime girls and it's a card RPG on the SNES before Magic the Gathering or Yu-Gi-Oh! even existed, whaaat!? That's so cool!
But it isn't a TRADING card RPG. It isn't even really a card RPG. Some things are card-shaped but it's a completely 100% vanilla dungeon crawler.
There's very little story, and most of what little there is is bland, and what isn't bland is bad.
It's very easy and it overstays its welcome. I kept waiting and waiting for it to get better and it never did.
I played this like right after Chrono Trigger. What a disappointment.
>>
>>12251739
Wasn't Arcana intended to be "baby's first dungeon crawler" in the exact same way Kirby was intended to be "baby's first platformer"?

I kinda miss how HAL Laboratory drew human characters in games like Metal Slader Glory, Alcahest and Arcana (see >>12251739). It was an appealing artstyle.

I never was allowed a lot of playtime as a kid.
We only had one TV in the living room and the whole family was there for the holidays and we had stuff going on. I've also never used guides. I'm amazed I got that far.
During the school year I was only allowed to play Friday until Sunday at 6 until graduating HS. Now kids have iPads lol. Games took months to beat usually so playing them back as an adult is often a better experience.
>>
>>12253726
Im sure that made game time more special when you got to have it and gave you a more well rounded set of interests. extremely grim how parents let ipads raise their kids before they can fucking read now.
>>
>>12253594
I never got games or consoles for Christmas now that I think about it... Well no there was that time I got ONE first party controller and two 3rd party ones so I could finally play 4 player with my two friends and dad.
