Why did we never get the Green version?

green and blue were considered the same color in Japan which is why I assume they went for green first as the "opposite" of red. Also maybe has to do with red/fire being destruction and green/grass being life.
>>12484718Green is midori, you retard.
>>12485248midori is a relatively new word. for a long fucking time green was considered a shade of blue in japanese culture(forest blue as opposed to sky blue) and Aoi was used for both. even today in poetry aoi can be used for green.
Picrel for me. Every couple of weeks my siblings and I would decide we were finally going to beat Athena. But sadly it's one of the most obscureshit games on the NES and we never got too far. I still think about it sometimes. And sometimes I still feel the pull to go back and play it again, but it would probably be with guides and at that point why even bother.
Time Lord NESI could never figure out what the pirate level wanted me to do as a kid. Going back and trying it years later, I got bogged down in the ww2 level and could just about limp into the last stage. Honestly I just wasnt having fun with it and gave up.Ultimately I am happy to let this game remain the one that got away.
>>12474378I doubt anyone's every beaten Athena without a Game Genie.
>>12474415^This.
>>12474378>Athena>obscureI want zoomer trash DEAD. I want their families DEAD.
>>12474378At one point I went back and completed just about all the games I got stuck on as a kid. The only exception I can remember right now is Zombies Ate My Neighbors. If I start at the beginning of the game, I run into issues keeping enough victims alive, and if I start mid-way through I have trouble getting enough ammo to deal with certain enemies. It doesn't look like it should be all that hard, but it's a fairly long game, and mistakes can add up.>>12474434Reset glitch? FF1 has plenty of bugs, but I don't think I've heard of that one. I struggled with FF1 as a kid in part because I tried applying too much real-world logic to it, and used iron and steel equipment for most of the game because I assumed it must be stronger than materials like silver and opal. I was still able to grind my way to victory, though.
oh wow, this looks like an awesome hardcore action platfor->have to pixel hunt for a bunch of stupid bullshit collectibles to get the proper ending>has a bunch of stupid RPG stat upgrades>can just fly right over and ignore most of the obstacles in the game>is way too easy outside of the TLB...nevermind. Why is it so hard to just make a solid linear platformer without all the stupid extra shit?
>>12483571It's kino.
>>12483571Maybe if you're jaded enough to view Dark Demon as the 'proper ending' it shows you aren't in the frame of mind for this game. It's an extra bonus fight as a reward for 100%. Gamers are their own worst enemy moving the goalpost for their own sense of enjoyment. You only need to gather all the crests for the good ending and the real final boss. There's no RPG mechanics either. There are mega man x weapon weaknesses, armor upgrades and ginsengs as sub tanks. I have no idea what you're talking about that's the world's loosest definition of RPG stats.

>>12484835Kek, I haven't played a lot of metroid but I like to think this is what happened here:>Be her>Spam rewind every time you make the slightest mistake>End up rushing and skipping most of the content that upgrades your stuff because of this>End up stuck underpowered on a really hard section>Refuse to take defeat and re-explore, keep rewinding ad infinitum insteadWtf the rewind feature is based now, instead of filtering brainlets, it traps them.
>>12484835That looks challenging and she's handling it well.
>>12484118No original hardware and not using intended save features means you didn't beat the game
>>12484835This looks extremely unfun both for her ad for the viewers. Just why?

Nudity in a Nintendo game is wild
I think I booted it up on my Everdrive once just out of curiosity. Fuck, that ROM took forever to load.
It's always funny to remember how HAL started out as a borderline shovelware factory for Japanese computers.
>>12485228it happened that they were the only software company in Japan with any 6502 experience so Nintendo contracted out a lot of Famicom games to them in the early days
So disappointing that they never did a SNES Lolo game.
>>12483409Do you have a video essay channel on cartridge tech, or are you just a virgin naturally?
This used to be state of the art computer gaming.(hard as balls, actually)

What did Japanese arcades smell like in the 90s?
Like salty milk and coins
>>12484365what every arcade smells likevirginity
someone should sell /vr/-themed scented candles
>>12484690It literally would smell like coins tho
>>12484365Mine had a bit of that new car smell so they probably wet and dry cleaned the carpet often. Also that warm motherboard and wire smell from the plastic insulation of the wires.
Were there any large faction of people in gaming who did not like the transition into 64 bit 3D games in the mid 90s, or was that considered mental illness? >imagining all this 3D slop coming out and ruining the entire mediumIt's somewhat plausible.
>>12484179Before I finished reading your post I was going to ask if they were Christians and then you confirmed it. That flavour of douchery is sadly all too familiar.
>>12482559My older siblings grew up with an NES and genesis and stopped playing videogames long before we had any 3D consoles at home.Later I've heard them talk about 3D games like "They're too confusing. You can go anywhere and I don't know what to do."
I think enthusiasts all too often project such quandries onto others. People by and large just accept what's available without a second thought about how shit compares to the past, other media, different regions, etc. 3D was a spectacle to the average consumer, and helped differentiate it from the previous generation. Development moved to new platforms. Unless you had parents who made you sell off your current console to fund a new one (as some I knew did), it's not as if you suddenly lost access to those games. You had too many new games coming out to lament about the past, and consider what may have been lost in the transition. There's a parallel to this in the console war debate. There would be arguments about what console was better and some tribal pride, but for the most part, you just wanted to play everything. You'd play fighters with whoever had a PSX, splitscreen FPS with N64 owners. Someyimes we'd even coordinate what games we got to make sure we had a wider variety to choose from. A lot of the discourse I see on /vr/ was never relevant then or even now.
>>12482559i dont really remember anyone saying they disliked 3D when it was new. it was such a big leap that everyone seemed pretty excited for it.
>>12482559Not exactly but I went from 8 bit to pc so played early 3D games like Doom and simply polygon and early textured games and then later discovered 16 bit games after I had an N64 so I didn't have the impression that some other people had that 16 bit games were outdated and primitive. I liked 3D games but I would also be really excited if I saw one of the few 2D games for the ps1. When I saw Doom on snes in a rental place I just assumed that technically Doom was on the level of 16 bit games. When I saw Yoshi Story on N64 the graphics absolutely blew me away and this was after playing the early N64 3D games. And back then before I knew anything I considered Wolfenstein 3D to have graphics equivalent to an Nes or Master System game. One moment was playing DK64 and thinking how much worse the graphics were.>>12482580I used to be disgusted with an non textured 3D from before 1994 or so if I happened to find a demo on pc. At the time I believed that the typical 16 bit game was so much more advanced.
Why did Japan turn Monty Mole into a bearded guy who fights zombies?
Did you know Monty was called Dorky Dorky Die Da Sow in japan?
Thoughts on GBA Crash Games?Reused assets aside, I feel they are harder than the PS1 games.Specially the bonus levels.
>>12481469The platformers are good. Aside from that, utter dogshit.
>>12484903The new powerups sound great on paper but in practice are kinda terrible for a handheldThe rocket jump and super slide would've been much better suited to a fifth console platformer where you have a much larger field of vision
>>12484960also, as you mentioned, being limited to 2 shoulder buttons for mapping instead of 4
>>12481469Hard is good. Those games were awesome.
>>12484903This, also the 1st title has a serious problem with jumps and slidejumps off the edge of platforms just not working... otherwise they're both excellent titles.
The Japanese versions of games are the main version. The localizations (NA or EU versions) are just derivative versions.>but anon, games were IMPROVED for their western release! No, they often had the difficulty lowered because western gamers are babies. Like Mega Man 2, which was made easier but you guys still claim it's hard. And some games did the opposite and increased the difficulty because of the rental market. The only way to get the true intended experience is to play the original.>But the western versions fixed bugs! They also introduced tons of them. Translating games back then was basically hacking them because text characters were graphical elements and not actual text, so translations often introduced bugs that weren't in the originals. They also censored the living shit out of everything. Graphics, dialogue, everything. And if we're talking about NES games, they have worse audio too because of missing sound hardware. Yeah that's right, if you played Zelda, Castlevania, Metroid, Kid Icarus, etc, than you got the shitty version with gimped music.>but [developer] said they like the English version better and they used the English script to make changes in the originalNo they didn't>ywnbjTry responding to what was said>but I like my shitty localizationYou like shit?>why is Doraemon fat?He let himself go after 20 years of bed breaking sex with shizuka-chanComment too long.
