>2nd panel
For those unaware:
https://okinawa.stripes.com/community-news/what-are-these-veggie-creatures-used-for-japan%E2%80%99s-obon-holiday.html
>During Obon period, some families make a small horse out of a cucumber and a small cow of out of an eggplant. The legs are made of chopsticks or matchsticks. These are called Shoryo-uma (horse for souls). Usually they are placed with an incense burner outside of the entrance of a home on the first day of Bon to welcome that ancestors’ souls.

>It is believed that the souls come back home quickly on a cucumber horse, tracing the trail of incense, and leave later slowly on an eggplant cow. The horse and cow are placed on altar on the second day. People will display them with lanterns, flowers and food items around the altar.

Copying some notes about this chapter:
>In the raws on the fifth panel of >>283416650, the owner uses the phrase 首が飛ぶ (kubigatobu, literally heads will fly) which is a Japanese idiom for someone threatened with being fired similar to how we might say someone/something is on the chopping block/getting axed. It was translated literally in this chapter as the female employee's head will roll which is funny given how later in >>283416770 & >>283416795 we see that it was the owner's own head is literally lopped off perfecting the pun in both Japanese & English.

I think it really is her. Even the way she insists on him telling the stories sounds like a mom nagging her son to eat his vegetables. She's obviously evil now given that she's possessing an innocent girl and Yuuma's only friend. And also killed the two cops who were trying to help him. But, if Yuuma's own ghost stories are to be believed, even previously good people can become evil spirits.

My guess was that is one of those posters to track daily progress of anything so you can put goals for yourself when learning something:

Some copy-pasta notes: In >>283419882 Yuuma sees a vision of a Mother and Child together which is gone by the next page panel in >>283419911.
>>283420026
As you can see, it is the same book Yuuma was reading in the library in >>283419864 which now sits on Hina's bookshelf.
The framing of Hina's bedroom mirrors Yuuma's (bed on the left/door on the right vs. the opposite for Yuuma).
Hina is wearing the same Dark Star-decorated shirt Yuuma would often be seen in (first appearance in Ch. 19 and last in 97).
Hina also has a stuffed doll (in this case a rabbit) like Yuuma's horse plushie Umakin.
She has the same 100-day calendar on her wall now as >>283420079 caught
Ch. 1 begins fading from black with Yuuma switching on his desk lamp while Ch. 100 ends back to black as Hina switches her's off.

Yuuma couldn't go through with the 100th story to finish the ritual so he killed himself to put a stop to it. Hina feels sadness and longing to see him again so it's hinted that the final chapter is the start of her own Round of 100 to bring him back.

>Is Hina dead?
No.
>How did she escape the mom?
Yuuma did not finish the 100th story, which fucked up the ritual.
>she says Yuuma betrayed her and chose his mom
He chose to kill himself to be with his mom instead of staying alive to be with her.
>>
>>283420184
Thank you, OP. I've read this before, but this was my first re-read. You see so much more in the stories when you know where it's all heading.
Like how the 99th story is a summary of Yuuma's and Hina's story. The older sister unintentionally drew her younger sister towards danger trying to save her from her plight. She successfully saved her younger sister while remaining in the doomed state she started in. But the younger sister plunged in to follow her anyway.
>>
>>283420276
Thanks OP
>>
The 99th story was about someone who got dragged into a toilet by a ghost and didn't kill themselves but everyone believes they did. In his conversation with Hina at the school, he quotes a character from his stories that didn't kill himself but everyone thought he did. Did the Mom possess Yuuma and write that letter and then kill him?
>>
>>283420247
All the stuff with Yuuma and the ghost mom really did happen. Yuuma committed suicide instead of finishing the ritual, and the implication is Hina's begun the 100 story ritual again in order to summon his ghost.

At least Yuuma finally got his wish to be with Mom again permanently.
Unless Hina's own Round of 100 Stories succeeds.
>>
>>283420276
My most memorable one was the riding duo one with the twist dude was dead all along. I only found out about the manga after someone posted that chapter separately
>>
>>283420423
I don't think the mom ever told a story. She gave control back to Hina when she told hers.
>>
>>283420542
No one is setup to stop Hina unless maybe her family gets to stop her.
>>
>>283420555
I'm the opposite. I randomly found this thread on /a/ and had read the Lord Oita story online beforehand, a while back. I had no idea it was anything but a one-off scary story until I found it here again while reading haha. I was like, "Hey! I know this one!"
>>
>>283420565
Mom definitely told at least this one >>283394153
>>
>>283420491
On the one hand, the chapter did go into Buddhist stuff about lingering attachments and Yuuma's note suggests that he may have been free of regret. On the other hand, someone was listening to Hina. Although that isn't necessarily conclusive.
Yuuma had reason to believe his mother was lingering in the world because of the crashing plates to save him even before he started the stories. Hina had no such sign. So there's even more room for doubt that the entity she's talking to really is Yuuma than there already was about that ghost really being Yuuma's mom.
>>
>>283420624
Oh yeah, you're right. I totally forgot that she was the one that told that one.
>>
Thanks for the dump. I didn't expect I would like it when I stumbled upon a thread because horror is not my thing, but this was a very fun read.
The ending fits the story, but I was expecting a little more catharsis, so it doesn't sit very well with me. I agree with Yuuma that the stories give more hope to both worlds and, within the context of the story and themes Yuuma killing himself is probably a kind of happy ending compared to him killing himself at the start, but I can't imagine either of the rituals going well for the involved parties.
>>283420276
Umbrella.
Fridge.
Life line.
Bicycle accident.
The three stories that show exorcism as torture for the spirits.
>>
>>283420184
Honestly, Yuuma took a hard choice even if it was an inevitable conclusion to what he started. Get his mom back in the living and hope things get better at the cost of the person that tried to save his life, or take his life anyway to be with his mom without the neverending hell of home just so he can save Hina anyway. It's an understandable choice, even if it effectively renders the series "for nothing" besides what Hina ultimately learned from the experience. There was never going to be a happy ending for Yuuma and she probably is full aware of that now which is why she's torn up about it but able to move on realizing the irony.
>>
>>283420479
The only bandaid I remember in the entire manga is the one Yuuma puts on his hand after his stepmom hurts him.
>>283420738
The main thing that changes is the context. At the start he was going to kill himself chasing after and trying to save a dead person. At the end he kills himself letting go of and saving a living person.
>>
>>283420738
>she's torn up about it but able to move on
No? She's consumed by despair and telling the first of her hundred stories

I'm proud of myself for figuring this one out fairly early on. I'm normally very slow with these sorts of things. But I had my suspicions after the first of the father's visits that was shown. And when Yuuma got locked in that closet or cupboard or whatever I was sure of it.
>>
>>283420946
You're right. This was an extraordinarily well-planned manga in conception and execution, not only telling a tight new story each chapter but adding to the overarching plot each time using only 2-4 pages of intro and outro exposition for pacing in what is essentially a yonkoma.

Damn, and here we go again.
But did stepmom get out of all of this alive? Noooo
>>
>>283421406
The stepmom lived, but I don't think she's getting out of it consequence free. Your elementary school aged child with signs of abuse all over his body being found having killed himself would look bad even in isolation. But there is also the murder of a police officer traced back to the same child and her husband is missing.
At best, she's going to be a pariah. And there's enough evidence to get a conviction for something related to Yuuma's abuse should the police care to pursue such a case. Which they probably will due to her apparent association with Takayanagi's death.
>>
>>283420455
>Thinking about it, I guess stepmom is still alive even though Hina implied she might be killed next
>Wonder where she was at the end
>>283421406
>But did stepmom get out of all of this alive? Noooo
Best Case: Japan's 100% Conviction Rate and ability to hold people without charging them until they confess works against her and she's wrongly (but rightly) convicted for both her husband's disappearance and Yuuma's death. I mean there's bound to be healed scarring discovered on the outside and internals of his body from the physical abuse at autospy, coupled with Officer Takayanagi's leftover cases notes, plus I'm sure the neighbors could hear all of the yelling and DV sounds emanating from their house but being Japanese just wouldn't saying anything until after it becomes a (double) homicide investigation incident.

Just look at that shit-eating smirk of self-satisfaction she has in the 4th panel of >>283419788 while Yuuma is on the floor getting the shit kicked out of him. I hope she can never turn her head from side-to-side again.

>>283421578

I think by the end he'd decided that his "mom" wasn't even his mom. He says in his note that this ordeal had given him hope for the world of the living and for the afterlife. But why would he say that if he thought he was going to wind up trapped in the living world as an evil version of himself? But if instead he came to the conclusion that the ghost wasn't really his mother, he could be hopeful because he believes his mother is in heaven after all.

It's such an obvious yet subtle thing (thanks to the fixed POV and short panel-screentime I guess?) to include.
If you look at the dreaming flashback in >>283419733 you'll see how Hina's hair grows to juuuust about Yuuma's Moms in length. Also note how he inherited her lighter hair color over his fathers dark one instead.

Also after completing this series earlier this year, the author Anji Matono has also drawn two more one-shots, the first seems like a sci-fi story appearing in the November issue of Shounen Sunday S called 転光生 or Transfer Student (I think?).

Ifeel like all the emptional abuse ones (clayman, stalker, ad agency guy making the dude emotionally dependent on him) were a little too familiar in the sense that yuuma definitely experienced some form of that after his mom's death. And then He gets subjected to it by the one adult left that he thought he could trust. Poor little bro.
>>
>>283427737
I wonder about his mom when she was alive. Was she actually as wonderful as he acts like? Or was she just better than his dad? How out of character was ghost mom's manipulation?
The last panel here is rather ominous >>283419747. But it was also a dream and Hina was telling the story at that point, so it isn't reliable.
But then Yuuma's remark to her here >>283419941 is kind of suspicious. It could just be him objecting to someone he doesn't know well acting like she knows how he feels. But all she was saying there was that his mom wouldn't want him to kill himself, which shouldn't be that objectionable of an assumption if she was as loving as advertised.

>>283420276
>>283426260
Yep. Hina stories were top-tier helped by the fact they were sprinkled inbetween cruel and twisted stories.
>>
>>283431214
The ritual or her strong regret and desire to be with Yuuma corrupted her. As Hina mentiones in >>283418968 she was a kind and caring person when alive. But considering that Yuuma was willing to sacrifice himself and his chance to bring back his mom back so that Hina could live I think he wouldn't want Hina to take such risks

The Dad looks fucking feral. What did the Mom see in him?
>>
>>283432586
Yuuma also looked totally deranged when Hina approached him. There's no love spell as powerful as "I can fix him".
>>
>>283420129
Other anons have said that all is probably not daijoubu at Hina's home, and this solidified it for me. My guess is nice but overworked and often absent parents. Hina's been taught she needs to be unquestioningly accepting and helpful to get attention, and she's confused and upset it didn't work with Yuuma.
>>
>>283433154
It is pretty worrying how little supervision Hina has. And how little concern there seems to have been for her practically living with a so clearly troubled family.
Most elementary schoolers wouldn't be able to sneak out and help hide a body even if they wanted to. And most wouldn't be willing, which is suggestive of your second point.
>>
>>283416173

It seems as if just like when he turned his Mom's picture face down, he also didn't want Umakin to have to "see" what he was about to do.

>>283427577
>author should make a Kido prequel spinoff where he solves occult cases with his tsukihime devil eye
He did mention he was from the Tokyo "Special Countermeasures" Division so it'd be interesting to learn if his eye was the result of special training that occult-investigation officers receive or if he was born with it and the natural ability got him into that position.

It really does resemble a child's picture-book and not in the overtly saccharine way of lot of edgier works do it when they want to have a "tweestest" dark overtone. The composition reminds me of the old Scholastic I Spy Spooky Night/Spooky Mansion Book/Game.

I don't think it was a coldblooded murder. Slowly escalating violence is more typical for this kind of abuser. The later stepmom might've been in the picture but he didn't need extra motivation to hurt his family. The way the mom's ghost attacked the stepmom and Takayanagi first and not the dad is strange and can be explained in various ways. Yuuma's odd comment to Hina makes the most sense to me if his mom tended to make excuses for her husband's behavior like a lot of DV victims do.
