>Bigger drives have more IOPS and GB/$. The only way small drives are cost effective is if you're price constrained getting enough drives for all the nodes in the first place.

I was thinking like REALLY small drives. Like I don't need to store anything for the cluster project other than an OS and a few extra bits of software, and most of the writes are going to be done to a single shared network drive, and even those are small and infrequent. (~1 write per minute, or less if I tweak some settings)

>>107883976
>netboot?
I looked into doing PXE boot but thought that each node would still need somewhere to actually put the data it's getting from the network? I mean these 13 optiplex boxes DO have 16 GB of ram so does it basically just do a RAMdisk?
>>
>>107884054
Either netboot or a bunch of cheap USB drives. Stock RHEL server wastes almost no writes. Logs go to RAM.

It's good for getting an introduction to something you don't know, but you need to have a feel for what llms know and what they don't. If you're a beginner at something it probably won't mess up the basics too much

I hate when people pronounce "std" (in a programming context) by spelling out each letter instead of saying "standard". Why would you call it a sexually transmitted disease, when "standard" literally has less syllables.

I recently had a funny interaction, i took a piss at a starbucks and didn't buy anything. There's two indians wearing jackets and sandals in 55 degree weather drinking coffee outside using ridiculously oversized android tablets, speaking some impenetrable hindu gobbedygook with "14 inch" "amoled" "galaxy" peppered through. They see this meme phone in my hand and they're too polite or illiterate to say anything to me about it but it's obvious that they're gawking at it. Not in a jealous way, in a mocking way.

But they're indians holding comically oversized tablets outside of a starbucks. It dawned on me that their society is built on caste based elitism so they think that holding an even bigger and more expensive ipad makes them look successful. But they just look like stereotypical third worlders, some white guy with a cheap blackberry clone completely shatters that illusion

Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

I appreciate the input. I actually tried that first! I would rather a clean install. But in this unique case, I can't do a clean install. Without wasting your time with an explanation; basically that is impossible in this case. I must make a downgrade happen, hence being at the end of my rope, seeking advice from you folks.

Non-premium? non-premium spotify goes up to 128kbps vorbis while non-premium youtube can do 128kbps opus - which is theoretically transparent. So youtube wins.

With premium, Spotify offers lossless as well as 320kbps vorbis (which is supposedly transparent too), while youtube offers 256kbps opus (and aac). If you include lossless, spotify wins, excluding lossless, youtube wins. I'm not sure if every audio source on youtube supports 256kbps but whatever anyway.
And I'm only mentioning excluding lossless because it uses a much higher bitrate than 320kbps and you might not want that much data use.

Optical drives are a scam. Their lens degrade over time even if completely unused.

huh? what company and model?
I think it's extremely rare.

Clankers say:

What fails in an optical drive?

Laser diode slowly weakens over time (even when unused, but very slowly).

Spindle motor and tray motor wear with use.

Lens alignment can drift with heat, shock, or age.

But really that starlink blocking was only temporary, SpaceX restored the starlink back to ~80-90% success rate. The regime hit it hard during the first few hours and flooded the starlink channel bandwidth , then spacex opted for different tactics

Even without AGI, current AI progress will absolutely sink the value of human labour over the following decades. Everyday more tasks can be automated, more white collar work can be done by less people. New grads will have no reason to be hired other than the 10-15 years of investment turning them into the next seniors, and competition between this ever decreasing pool of jobs will only get fiercer.
How does the average person fare in this new world?

>value of human labor
nonsensical phrase. What decreases is the necessary human labor for the purposes of present production requirements.
>How does the average person fare in this new world
This is not a private problem. Either new markets emerge that leverage the AI-assisted human labor force, or wages start decreasing and commodity circulation falters, which leads to a generalized economic crisis. In the second case it's not the average person that fares poorly, it's most people. This is like capitalism 101.
>>
Ngl chatgpt kinda sucks now given how limited it is now and how expensive it is now. 2024 was better than it is now.
>>
>>107882377
It's not automation. It's much simpler. Supply and demand. There are too many people, so supply goes up. When supply is up, the price goes down.

Stop migration. Stop fighting "demographic crisis". (which is crisis for capitalists and a miracle for the people)

This winter mood can be further enhanced by swapping the taskbar/icons/window theme and colors. Honestly I don't mind the Ubuntu font for the system, it is easy on the eyes.

Anything to do with xscreensaver and lockers looks like amateur hour hell thoughever, and the Luna theme changing the notification background color doesn't do well either.
