READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

I have 2 docker containers A and B
How do I make container B use a service (i.e. a db) that is in container A? Or is that something I shouldn't do?
>>
>>107698381
If they are in different containers and both have network access, just point them to whatever ports you exposed the other on?
Or rebuild the containers into one.
>>
>>107698422
>Or rebuild the containers into one.
Sorry I'm a noob with all of these (if you couldn't tell already by the question) but you could do that? Even if the services on each container are unrelated except for the fact that either wants to use a db? I just want to "save resources" by not having 2 dbs on two separate containers, if that makes sense.
>>
>>107688227
Anyone running mail servers?
>>
>>107698450
Yes, you can put whatever the fuck you want in a container. but it's probably easier just to tell each container what ports to talk to on your localhost. Read up on container configurations

yes I made a mistake I meant why not get a 32" and maybe an OLED or something when you are already spending so much, get a good monitor as well if you can
>>

I'd buy now then. Those bundles are a crazy good deal.
>>
>>107698691
My current monitor is a 24" and the size is fine, 3 more inches would be perfect.

I play a lot of competitive multiplayer games and 32" seems like it'd be too large and unwieldy.

Also I want to keep everything for 5 or 6 years and OLED would burn in by that point. My current monitor is a 6 year old IPS with 0 issues.

Back in 486 days I had a program that played wav files over the PC speaker by rapidly playing different tones and volumes. It disabled interrupts while doing this since it was very time sensitive or it would sound shitty. Since it was a 486 there weren't any negative rings yet so the only thing that could interrupt it was an NMI. It registered itself as a Windows 3.1 sound driver, and everything in the system would grind to a halt any time a sound played.
>>
>>107697461
Visual player?
>>
>>107697522
No, it was specifically meant to be a sound driver and I don't think it had any config utility or a name beyond it's filename. I think it just came with a drv file and a readme saying how to set it up in your system.ini.

Are people at Microsoft even aware that they just killed themselves with one simple move where people actively downgrade or switch to other OS just to NOT be at Win11? They think they hold monopoly or what?

Gaymers and Boomers. Normies and creative people are already on macs. privacy people, programmers and gaymers that don't rely on kernel malware already switched to linux. It's time for valve to liberate the remaining gaymers.

AI is too complicated for boomers. They go to Mac too. Gaymers will either downgrade or change to linux or whatever will allow to play their gayme better because win11 is a literal bloatware that slows computer down, not a good look for gayming

Yes, because they pushed aside all the useful things and made the Start Menu worse so they could shill their own shitty programs. And even once users put their own things there it was still a poor use of prime screen real estate.

SP1 made XP usable, SP2 killed raw sockets and enshittified half open connections (which can be fixed with 3rd party patches but still). SP3 didn't feel like much of a change at all even though the changelog was massive.

It took a few years for 2000 to actually get proper 3d hardware acceleration support, which back then was about the only reason for XP's existence as far as I'm concerned.

Over time, though, 2000 support diminished and XP became the absolute minimal requirement.

Today I daily drive POSReady 2009 and I've never been happier.

> every feature I don't like
Yes, because I have good taste

Any version of Windows since 1995 has been more polished, production-ready and user-friendly than any Linux distro ever made. That's obvious to anybody who has installed both of them on the same machine.

Are Linux users just lying about their distros being a better experience than a Windows installation?

linux is a better experience than windows if you don't triple a game, need microsoft office, or need media editing software like the adobe suite of tools or DAWs or other things like that
if you don't require that stuff linux is better, it just comes with a bit of a learning curve which is why its uptake is slower
>>
>>107698642
>if you don't triple a game
Sometimes it's still an issue with older games, codec issues are still a problem in some cases that Proton is trying to work out
