Why have companies given up on the cheap computing niche?
You could get a cutting edge laptop in 1982 for just $100, back when an Apple 2 cost $1500.

The inflation-corrected dollar value is exactly how one compares purchase prices from different eras. That's why charts like this one exist:

Lack of customer demand for that style which is a niche customer interest.
Phones and tablets ARE cheap computers that style would have to compete with while also competing with abundant used and more powerful PCs.

Adding a bluetooth keyboard and mouse (or combination keyboard with integral trackpad) is easy as pairing. Tablets often have aftermarket cases with integral bluetooth keyboards (which could of course be paired with a phone).

Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series if you want the Real Business Experience™
>Other business laptops are welcome in /tpg/ (Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook)

Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap
>Excellent keyboards, tactile feel and quiet + the TrackPoint
>Great durability: magnesium roll cage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop
>Easy to repair (most models), upgrade & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts easy & cheap to obtain
>Excellent Linux & *BSD support

I run Mint on a X390 Yoga and XFCE is fine as long as you have an auto rotate script configured. Cinnamon has support right out of the box and I assume MATE does as well, but I care more about battery life so I quickly swapped over to XFCE and haven't touched either in a while. Pressure sensitivity works without configuring anything as well, but you better like Krita or other drawing programs that are Linux native because Wine still is unable to translate pressure sensitivity when using it for Windows programs.
>>
>>107545866
They're both very similar, 380's got a few things that add up to being better as a whole than the 390 (can put a 2242 M.2 into the WWAN slot, more keyboard protection when in tablet mode, modular power jack means it's more resistant to breaking than a typical Type-C port and can also be swapped out for Type-C charging instead of a laptop plug).

You can slap an X220 keyboard onto an X230 laptop if you'd like slightly newer hardware https://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Install_Classic_Keyboard_on_xx30_Series_ThinkPads.

yt-dlp -x --embedded-thumbnails --embedded-chapters

that way you get the vaporwave (or whatever music) on youtube in audio only format with thumbails and song name chapters preserved, I figured that out manually but the one below Grok gave me this special command that download videos in low quality which is great for downloading documentaries without chugging up diskspace

yt-dlp -f "best[height=360]" --audio-quality 35K

So I recently stumbled upon ai vtuber and now I want a neuro-like thing on my computer. Does anyone know how to do that?

I asked chatgpt and it told me to install text-generation-webui and get a bunch of models (Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct-Q4_K_M), which I did. I'm now able to talk to 'something' locally on my computer. Next it told me to find some personality loras, and what's where I'm stuck because all the links it gave me ended up 404'ing. Am I on the right track? Where do I find these personality loras?

You know you can replace the RAM on basically any old laptop regardless of brand? There's nothing special about these.

Generally 80% of the work is done by 20% of the people. And 80% of the populace (especially in the management side) doesn't really understand anything they're supposedly experts in managing (which as an aside is why corpos think it'll be so easy to replace everyone with AI and Indians, because CEOs/boards are like a dozen steps removed from production). So to most managers they can't tell the difference between an 80 and 20; they can only operate on vibes. So so long as you appear confident, then they think it must be for good reasons. Conversely, if someone seems always busy and stressing like a hard-worker would, they'd assume that that person just fucked around and is an incompetent idiot - cuz "well my [do-nothing] job doesn't make me so busy so it must be a failing on their part".

This is all built ontop of the fact that the supermajority of labor in tech is pointless capital-burning nothingburgers in the first place. Dumb-money investors burning money on The Next Big Thing on one side, and FAGMAN corpos trying to gobble up as much talent as possible with do-nothing jobs to make sure they don't work for a potential competitor on the other. Its mostly imaginary and produces nothing of "real" value.

There are other factors, but this is a big one imo.
>>
>>107555128
Its very unfulfilling. Despite it objectively being good for my lot in life, I'm certainly not happy like this. I've gained a lot of new skills, and I have infinite money, but I've always had something to drive towards in life so now I feel like I beat life and am worse for it. I'm nostalgic for when I was so poor I'd go days without eating. It's all a blessing that I squander

Wanted to build a NAS but I guess I'll have to wait now that RAM prices are fucked.

Every single year AI companies are spending hundreds of billions of dollars making barely any revenue in return.

When will AI turn a profit?

How do you lose $143B of tax payers' dollars in just a couple of years?

Taxes aren't going up, they'll just take out several trillion more in debt since everyone in power will be dead before the rest of us have to deal with it.

>>
>>107553830
You know you can’t just magic away the cost of these buildouts, right? All this shit is being financed by debt, they’re gonna have to pay the money back. If building infrastructure didn’t impact the long term ability to generate revenue, all the regarded companies from the Dotcom bubble would still be around. They aren’t making 200 billion to pay for this shit in the first place, let alone make anything on top of it

You can make a simple test: how many new people do you meet in a week or in a month outside work? If the number is less than 20 or even 10, you are likely one of these chronically online people. If you set a goal to reach out, you will find people who also reach out. The internet and especially youtube directly profits off of you living in a psychotic state, where you believe the world is ending or different. The people preaching this to you usually failed in life and infect you with their thinking. Look at how one of these guys hates on technology but peddles his patreon and content creator slop. He is directly part of the problem and the exact grifter that supports this ecosystem.

Stop being a loser on the internet and go outside, it will be painful, but open your mind and your ass will follow
