i have been asking the same question for a very long time.

>anyway it works fine even without these settings, these are for the freaks who need to glean the last erg of performance out of highly tuned systems with loads of RAM to spare in them.
>>
This feels like a really basic thing but I don't think I've ever tried it before. I use little enough space on my primary SSD that I could just clone it onto my much smaller secondary SSD. Obviously I could do this as a backup kinda thing and clone back to my primary, but would I be able to boot off the secondary? It occurs to me that I've never tried something like that, and it could be an easier way to shuffle things around if I want to fuck around with Linux memes and dual boot shenanigans and still have a quick and easy reset.
>>
>>107558806
i have a better suggestion if you want to experiment with e.g., *nix that does not pollute the Windows EFI boot with the grub bootloader or whatever *nix bootloader your chosen distro uses. This is important, every once in a while an anon pops up that loaded *nix then got rid of it and ended up not knowing how to get rid of the *nix bootloader.

firstly, make sure you have a way to fully back up your OS drive to a storage medium outside your computer and make a backup.

then make sure your stuff on the second drive is also copied off somewhere so you can erase that one.

then you can temporarily disable (in BIOS if possible, or by removing or unplugging) your OS drive and install *nix to the second drive.

now, re-enable or re-install the original OS drive. In the BIOS, make sure its still in the same boot order as Windows gets confuse if you change the boot order.

done correctly this results in there being two completely separate UEFI bootloaders, and you can use whatever BIOS hotkey your motherboard has on bootup to select BIOS boot from either drive (the default boot would still be Windows). If and when you get tired of *nix you could simply erase the secondary drive and use it for Windows, or if you decide the *nix distribution is all you need you can erase the Windows drive, either way you never have to worry about the bootloader from either OS messing up the other one (and Windows does not care about *nix bootloaders, it will happily trash e.g. Grub if you you do a repair).

>sounds crazy but it /works/
>>
>>107558938
Oh that's a great idea, thank you. It's been a long time since I worked in break/fix style IT and that was enough to make me stop tinkering as a hobby. Didn't even occur to me that I could just turn them off in BIOS. I guess the one tricky thing is making sure that the backup would fit the cold storage SSD I'd use for it. I'll need to trim enough fat for it to fit on a 500 GB drive. Not impossible, but an effort. Probably well worth it for cheap insurance.
>>
>>107559237
>could just turn them off in BIOS
thats a maybe, completely dependent on what the motherboard supports. If you are using SSDs connected by cable it's a simple as powering off and unplugging the <correct> drive.

>fit on a 500 GB drive
most backup software will do compression, not back up hibernation or pagefile, etc. - a simple Windows "Disk Cleanup" and a test run with your chosen backup software will give you a better idea, if you use OneDrive and trust The Cloud you can skip the local copies of files stored there.

>cheap insurance
if you aren't already backing up your OS drive you should consider doing so on a regular basis. mine gets backed up to a share on my NAS which in turn gets backed up to another NAS. i used to have further offsite backups but had to decommission the target system after my best friend passed last year, we had a mutual disaster recovery setup going. after decades spent in IT i trust no single device.

>getting old sucks.

I can't guess as to what the issue is, but I am wishing you the best with it. Try to focus on the present and what you can change, while ignoring all that you can't. And remember: It's only depression if it's disproportionally intense or long lasted. Feeling like shit because things are shit is just being reasonable. That's the hard part when you have it, it's hard to differentiate between unreasonable emotions due to the illness and reasonable negative emotions about how your life is (maybe in part because of depression).

Kettle lead will fit. Is it manual-specification, nope. Have I done it? For decades. Tho kettle leads tend to be 13A, so it may give it more than it needs in a failure.

>This is one of those plugs that don't care about polarity?
For a given value of "don't care". Upper pin there is earth, lower two is neutral/live. They swap +/- 50x a second... Something like that likely fine, not really caring which is which.

what if companies are mass buying hardware not only because of AI, but to push people into a cloud ecosystem in the future?

imagine a future where most consumer hardware can only run a browser and very lightweight stuff, and the rest needs to be done though cloud services

As long as the government doesn't intervene in stopping the production of hardware, as prices rise margins also rise and create an opportunity for new producers to enter the market
It's not guaranteed because nothing is guaranteed. AI is destined to fail anyway, it's revolutionising things but margins will lower easily. These companies are basically investing for nothing but they're using freshly printed government money anyway.
>>
This is being done by a desperate scam company to hinder it's competition. Even NVIDIA is backing out on some of it's plans to support them because despite all the hardware they burn they keep getting smacked by more efficient models. These threads are made by tech inept people. I could comfortably use 4GB of RAM on any popular Linux distribution and probably would be fine with two. Plenty of people run pretty intense workloads with 8GB Macbook Airs which are usually the most powerful laptops with just 8GB of Ram. 99% of people have 16GB of RAM or more and if one of their sticks die they won't need to change to a fucking cloud because they would still have 8GB of RAM.
>>
>>107555161
>but to push people into a cloud ecosystem in the future?
How long precisely do you feel it practical to restrict the ability to purchase?
What about all the manufacturers without a "cloud presence"? Why would they play this game? Whilst they're waiting out the market for all the existing and usable devices to die and losing sales consistently in the process....

>imagine a future where most consumer hardware can only run a browser and very lightweight stuff, and the rest needs to be done though cloud services
