Linuxfag here, there should be more BSD threads, at least you guys do discuss your OS instead of mere shitposting. Anyway, some questions:
- I've heard before OpenBSD is slow, but why is that? And how slow is it in everyday use?
- What's the deal with the file systems I keep hearing about?
- How "free" is it really? Specially when compared to "libre" distros like Parabola or Guix.
- Just how difficult is it to use a BSD? I'm quite familiar with Linux shenanigans (for better or worse). Do I need to be a greybeard to use OpenBSD for example?
- What desktop environments are available?
- Thoughts on Hyperbola BSD?

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

Right. So I'm guessing any basic off-the-shelf plain router probably won't have this configurable feature? And even less chance in an old ISP all-in-one box?

So best to get one of those fanless mini pcs, and install a common open source router OS on it, and configure the firewall feature on it? Any recommendations for the OS?
>>
>>107552826
>Aren't all IP(v4)s regularly getting scanned on port 25 these days?
That's not specific to SMTP. Every port of every IP is scanned for every service. Just go to Shodan.
>If there is a zero day, you are completely fucked unless you are running it in an isolated container and regularly make a backup of that.
Again, not specific to SMTP. It's not like it's more prone to 0-days. It all depends on how you run your shit. Containers and VMs are standard practice.
>>
>>107553366
If you've got old routers laying around, check if OpenWRT supports any. It's an OS that replaces the stock firmware and allows you to do anything you like.
It also works on those fanless PCs, but managing it is a bit more advanced. You should probably use OPNsense for that.

For home use? not much. Probably don't need autoscaling, or very low down times. GitOps is kinda cool. but even that doesn't require more than one node.

You can get 8th gen intel thinkpads for like 110-160 dollars. Look for t490 id say as its cheaper than t480(which was last model with external battery and no soldered ram, the newer ones have only 1 ram slot upgradable). If you want a better CPU then get t14 gen 1 AMD. 8gb ram will be enough for linux, id recc Linux Mint but its your choice.

I specifically went for the X13g4 because all the panels are at least 100% sRGB, was also pleasantly surprised that i got the touch panel as well as it wasn't mentioned in the listing.

The few T14 gen2 or even gen 5 i inquired about were all the crappier panels.

Webp is shit and it has little to do with jewgle. It's only resl merit is better compression than older formats but comparing to them is disingenuous. You should compare it to JXL and AVIF where it's clearly the worst. The only reason it's prominent is because jewgle is pushing it on everyone because of internal politicking.
>>
>>107550043
what do you think of jxl? personally, i think it's the true replacement for jpg/jfif, since it has features that will help in the transition from the legacy jpeg format. lossless recompression of existing jpegs is essential to me and i think everyone would benefit as well, as long as it's widely adopted.

Not an opinion, really a question:
Is the Elves 2 Pro good?
I like the look & it comes with a carry case (and Hall effect sticks)
>>
>>107553068
>>107544048
Elves 2 Pro has a weaker processor and Bluetooth chip than the Elves 2 non-Pro despite costing almost twice as much, so unless you specifically need the Pro features (iirc, macro recording and disabling d-pad diagonals) I don't see a reason to recommend Pro over regular.
That aside, afaik the other hardware in the two is the same and Elves 2 d-pad is perfection. Saturn d-pad with a big pivot and conductive rubber with springiness about halfway between Dualsense and Nintendo; not too mushy, not too . Sticks are ok, but small hall effects probably aren't ideal for anything that needs precision. For QC issues my d-pad squeaks and the R2 button rattles, neither impacts function.

If you want a good d-pad, it's an easy recommend. It's pretty small and comes with a form-fitting plastic case, so it's a good pocket controller if you have any use case for portability.

So I had to reset my tablet and reinstall Kuroba Dev, after doing the work around to get the captcha to load, I got the dreaded "Your IP range has been temporarily banned due to abuse" error that has been cropping up lately. I'm not actually range banned as I can post from the same IP address on my PC without any issues. I remember seeing it had to do with browser cookies and figured I could get around the problem for now by posting from my browser, however whenever I try to solve the captcha from Chrome on my tablet, it says I failed to type it correctly, even though it is 100% typed correctly. Is anyone else having problems posting from certain browsers, either it saying you're range banned when you're not, or the captcha simply failing regardless of whether it's actually typed correctly? Pic related is the type of captcha I'm getting right now on my tablet. I have been able to make one or two posts with it before it sperged out so maybe it'll go away after a day or so.
>>

>>
>>107553684
It's something to do with your browser. I'm not actually range banned as I can post from the ip that claims is banned. Just from another device. And it's not so much the range ban error. I know about that. It's why the fuck can't j solve any captcha!?

I've never heard of ly but just looked it up, is that what I'm seeing up there? What is handling those datas that you have in the top and bottom "bars" (which don't seem to be true bars in the conventional sense). What was the update that broke it?
>>
>>107553736
Top bar is i3blocks, which uses the output of shell commands, can be styled with css, and has limited features for making interactive objects.

Bottom bar is i3status, which grabs system information and formats the output, using format strings, similar to something like the date command.

Ly provides a login screen as you boot into the computer. I do not have a screenshot of my ly setup, and I overwrote it with the .pacnew version of my config file in a panic trying to troubleshoot my problem. It is a tty program that provides a tui login screen instead of something graphical like lightdm.

idk man, for my shitty forum backend I set up a channel and worker goroutines that process media uploads in a queue. User would upload file, I validate it, put in DB, push to queue, and respond with a 200. Was a quick and easy way to make the endpoint responsive
>>
>>107551434
how many requests per day or hour are you handling like this?
>>
>>107551520
Wrong question, because not all requests are equal. Such system would only be limited by network bandwidth since all it does is download the file (unavoidable, either upload directly to S3 or save to a temp dir), run checks, make entry in DB, and return. The actual processing happens in the background, safe from resource exhaustion by those initial checks and a set amount of workers. My usecase is making thumbnails, and I make shell calls to imagemagick and ffmpeg. Even this is probably overkill but it's really fast and easy to implement.
