What is the heaviest bullet weight in a "typical" and still handle-able caliber that can be fired accurately? I know .45-70 can get up to like 600 grains, are there any 1000+ grain bullets that wont obliterate your shoulder but still go fast enough to kill something?
>wont obliterate your shouldersJust establish a maximum amount of acceptable recoil energy, then, using the weight of the gun, figure out the max bullet momentum and you can figure out the max velocity for a given grain weight that is still within allowable recoil range. All that said, the heaviest possible bullet is gonna be a super long 50 cal. So maybe 510 whisper. Iāve never shot one but from footage Iāve seen, the recoil does not seem excessive at all. Your shoulder will remain intact. Not sure where youād find 1000+ grain bullets though. I know some exist but theyāre real fancy and expensive tungsten core bullets.Vidrel, 510 whisper.https://youtu.be/CelM9DsdHos?si=fsftXbgQzg8mh7FK
>>64338552The conversation wasn't about the capabilities or marksmanship of the hunters. It was>are there any 1000+ grain bullets that wont obliterate your shoulder but still go fast enough to kill something? And those old guns could and did kill "dangerous game". Plus, I'm sure idiots with modern ammunition still wound their quarry through incompetence, and leave fragments or entire bullets in them. But other than that, thank you for your input, it contributed precisely nothing to the topic.
>>64335498OP did specify that the gun should not obliterate oneās shoulder, so that precludes 950JDJ (and the nitro express cartridges other anons have brought up)
>>64341268>Just establish a maximum amount of acceptable recoil energy, then, using the weight of the gun, figure out the max bullet momentum and you can figure out the max velocity for a given grain weight that is still within allowable recoil range.No. The problem is not velocity and momentum - it's the mass of the projectile and the acceleration - F=ma. So you also need to figure in the length of the barrel and the speed of the powder (which gives you the rate of change of pressure)
>>64341274Nitro express was regularly shot by people who still had two functioning shoulders

>>64340619>Glock triggers don't cock the striker.Yes they do>>64340804That's because 9mm is the main nigger shooting caliber chosen by law enforcement. .45 fails just as frequently in the rare cases it's used.
>>64340961No, they don't.
>>64340804>>64340775This is such a retarded fuddlore argument. Energy transfer scales with impact resistance which scales with velocity. 9mm and 45 create very similar wound channels especially with hollow points because standard .45 loads don't have the velocity they need to expand quickly decreasing energy transfer. Bottom line, 9mm is the same objectively superior choice because it has higher capacity and lower recoil.Whenever I see these arguments online I assume the people making them can't shoot for shit

>modernizing the revolver means lightweight materials, optics cuts, better triggers, and interchangeable cylinders/calibers!Is he retarded? This is absolutely incorrect and this guy is never going to be satisfied because his demands are foolish. What we actually NEED in the revolver market is an autoloading revolver like the Mateba. What we actually NEED in the revolver market is a gas seal revolver like the Nagant (did you forget how popular suppressors are getting?).He was right on putting autopistol chamberings in revolvers: something like 9mm or 45 makes your cylinder (and thus the whole gun) a fair bit shoter. But hell, why not just combine the Mateba and the Nagant? A gas seal autoloading revolver? That's the only thing that might could pass for a "modern" revolver.
>>64338633You want dumbass range toy gimmicks.
>>64340018>revolvers are obsolete,Six bullets are more than enough to kill anyone that moves. Would he be in such nice shape if 357 rounds were tearing through his body? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhaMoljh57QHave you seen 9mm auto-loaders jam up frequently in body cam footage? I have seen it countless times, and revolvers are much more reliable. For civilian market, the vast vast vast vast vast majority of cases are going to involve a shooting at close range that is over in a few rounds. Getting into an extended fire-fight is extremely rare.

>>64320680Prefacing this by saying I don't own (hard) Kevlar anything. My worry having played around with a lot of different materials making things is that you may start to delaminate the kevlar layers like cheap plywood on the edges depending on how it's cut or how it reacts. It may go well. It may not. You just can't know until you do it. Delamination may worsen over time from a spot you didn't notice originally as well. And how are you going to protect the cut edges? How can you secure the cut edge to prevent fraying or delamination (ie. using epoxy) without having a possibility of that also affecting the rating of the helmet? Just my overly cautious look on modifying anything like that.
>>64323296Might be a lot less doable with that Mossberg (nice Mossberg btw) but I like Magpul QD cups on the side of the stock above pistol grip and at front of forend and the default cheap magpul slide adjust sling. Put rifle at ~3 or 4 o'clock if you don't have anything else there and let it sit muzzle down. Great spot for a hunting rifle to sit, especially a folding stock 22. I think it'd help a lot knowing whether you're talking that mossberg or an AR or what. I'd really have to think about how I carry my AR for long times when hunting. Been a while.
>>64323911Didn't see this before replying like 2 minutes ago. Weirdly I find my Magpul sling comfy despite no padding. Might want to look at their padded sling; IIRC they do make one. I really don't like cheap slings FWIW, maybe except a surp Colt silent sling. Also cradling the rifle in one arm (muzzle left, on right forearm) can relieve some of the weight on your left shoulder. Sometimes I hold it in both arms. Whatever makes my shoulders feel best during the day as needed.

>>64340132The .264/6.5x43mm does seem interesting, but 6.5x39mm/6.5 Grendel has already been outclassed. Grendel belongs in a museum; it has the same BC as 6mm ARC, less flat shooting than 6mm ARC, slower than 6mm ARC, similar bullet weights (90 gr or 108 gr being common); it's just old news. It did do a great job of outperforming 6.8 SPC though.
>>64340204>outclassedNo, it hasn't. .30-06 hasn't been "outclassed"(You) can make an argument that cartridge X outperforms cartridge Y in certain metrics, but each cartridge also has its disadvantages. Barrel burning one of them, but there are others.6.8 was always a fucking joke. Solution to a 'problem' that never existed
>>64339777>why not just use the tech for 556?Because we've got nas3 for that already being fielded. SIGs case in the m250 and rebarreled 240 plus a dmr would be ideal.
>>64340278>No, it hasn't. >.30-06 hasn't been "outclassed"See when two rounds serve a different purpose, then they can both exist alongside one another; however, when two cartridges serve the same purpose, like two intermediate cartridges known as 6.5 Grendel and 6mm ARC, it's unnecessary to own both. The people who already own 6.5 Grendel will continue to use it and the people who are now looking for an upgrade to 5.56 will likely consider the superior cartridge (the 6mm ARC or the .264/6.5x43mm). Look at how .450 Marlin slowly started dying out when 45-70 became the standard, how 6.5 Creedmoor is slowly making .270 Winchester die out, or look at how .38 Colt disappeared when .38 Super came around; the only people who kept the obsolete cartridge were those who bought into it before the upgrade came along.>6.8 was always a fucking joke. The funny thing about this statement is that while I meant 6.8x43mm/6.8 SPC (6.5 Grendel's main competitor in the early 2000s), you could apply this statement to 6.8x51mm/.277 Fury and it'd still be 100% accurate. LOL
>>64340713I don't see 6 mm ARC as a direct supplanting of 6.5 Grendel nor do I have a requirement for itYes agreed, some ? newer calibers can make older ones obsolete. .260 Remington though will probably stay around despite 6.5 Creedmoor's now-wide adoption. There are many other examples that can go either wayRE: 6.8, I meant all/both
