About 2001-2002, Second Chance or another big cop shop allegedly developed a 7.62x39 mild steel core rated soft armor vest using a Zylon-Spectra (Z-SHIELD) layup and it wasn't that heavy. IIRC, areal density was ~1.2lb/ft2. Certainly an M193 / M80 version would have followed by 2008. The whole situation with Zylon however shitlisted that part of the tech tree for good. Pity.
