Privacy by Danielle Chelosky (new story!)>A folder on her laptop held the stories she was not allowed to publish. One boy forbade her because there was an entire paragraph about his dick size (it was complimentary, she didn’t understand the problem). Another was worried his girlfriend would end up finding it. Another said he would cancel her for invasion of privacy. >These were rare instances. Mostly boys were flattered, considered it an ego boost, no matter how they were portrayed. People in general liked to be immortalized. In a way, she resented their narcissism, like they couldn’t appreciate what she’d written because they were just staring at themselves.>The truth was whatever reaction the boys offered was not what she wanted, even if they lavished her with praise, called her a genius, it was never enough. She thought of writing as not just a plea to be seen but a plea to be loved. It never seemed to have the effect that she yearned for, probably because it was impossible. Maybe, she thought, if she killed herself then her words would take on a new, heavier meaning.>She used to think that a boy being mad about a story she’d written about him meant the writing had done its job. It touched a nerve; it was controversial and had a direct impact on real life. Then she decided that mindset was banal, stupid. She thought her writing was at its weakest when it was a weapon.>On the internet she stalked a writer she had once done a literary reading with. During the reading he had spoken candidly about his sex addiction, and his girlfriend at the time stomped off. Now he was dating a different writer and they were constantly writing about their relationship, hosting readings where they read about each other with each other, publishing the history of their love in glossy magazines that paid by the word. She felt put off by this masturbatory spectacle. Like she couldn’t imagine anyone caring about it or finding it as anything other than insufferable. She wondered how one could make interesting art if they viewed their life as a project—then isn’t the project about the project, not about life?

>>24965319>>24965321I said it earlier in this discussion but good lord this human being is so comically passive. I feel like she's literally looking at her life like she's sitting at an art gallery, hmming and huhing at the people she encounters with no real purpose. Everything she encounters is treated like exhibits at an art museum too, consumed and criticized as if looking at some graduate student's 7/10 portraiture in a cold white gallery. "The one thing which we seek with insatiable desire is to forget ourselves, to be surprised out of our propriety, to lose our sempiternal memory, and to do something without knowing how or why; in short, to draw a new circle. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm. The way of life is wonderful: it is by abandonment. The great moments of history are the facilities of performance through the strength of ideas, as the works of genius and religion. "A man," said Oliver Cromwell, "never rises so high as when he knows not whither he is going." Dreams and drunkenness, the use of opium and alcohol are the semblance and counterfeit of this oracular genius, and hence their dangerous attraction for men. For the like reason, they ask the aid of wild passions, as in gaming and war, to ape in some manner these flames and generosities of the heart."Does anything happen to this human that actually makes them stop and realize how fucking hermetic they are? Do they ever transcend this self-obsessed psychically-cloistered monologue? Or is their whole reality just this droning on about how everything reminds her she's stuck inside her skull?

The book I have enjoyed the most this year has been The Unbearable Lightness of Being. In it, the author seeks to describe what it means for an individual to accept or reject the responsibilities that arise in their life.Specifically, it describes two lifestyles. On the one hand, there is a life that accepts responsibility. This life is more grounded, connected to the earth, and experiences life in its fullness, since many of its actions have an impact on the world—to the point that the weight of those actions can end up crushing the individual to the ground. On the other hand, a life of lightness enjoys its own existence by avoiding any responsibility in order to focus on oneself, even though this life ultimately feels a sense of unease when realizing that all its actions end up being insignificant in the face of the world. In summary, the idea that responsibilities make us more or less connected to the world around us has surprised me greatly. What book have you enjoyed the most this year?
>>24984706>I've read a great quantity of books this year, as I consciously tried to give my life a more "productive" direction. Ultimately, I ended up treating every book as a merchandise to be consumed, "done with". I enslaved myself to the numbers in a spreadsheet; as a result, I can't say I've authentically enjoyed a book in this year of Our Lord (most of the time it felt like a duty I had to fulfill). This should be the sticky for this pseudointellectual insecurity board

>>24984901Usually experiments performed on rats are medicinal, since we share a high DNA profile percentage. Close or over 90% if I recall correctly. However, rats are also observed to have a capacity for language (language like patterns in their squeaks. Also you can hook brain clones of them up to a motherboard and have them operate Doom). So, it doesn't seem unreasonable to me that they have the capacity to read. They are still nowhere near our level of intelligence howeverbeit. Probably closer to a dog's, or a toddller's.
>>24984873don't buy a new laser printer ya big dummy. the best ones are a few years old anyway because they cost close to nothing, and can take cheap knockoff toner cartridges.>>24985741same concept for ereaders too. i just upgraded from a kindle DX, which is now 15 years old and still perfectly functional. if you're really too poor to justify $200 for the capability of a lifetime of knowledge in a single device, just buy any used kobo/kindle/etc and sideload whatever you want
>>24985741The biggest thing to consider is where you'll get your books from; the first-party bookstore is the main differentiator between the mainstream devices. I don't have much of an opinion there, I prefer to just pirate digital copies and then buy physical if they're worthy. Personally I wouldn't buy digital books unless you're able to download the epub file, ideally without DRM.Install calibre on your computer and start collecting books in there. Any (non-kindle) reader you plug in will render EPUB files just fine, and calibre will automatically convert formats if needed. (newer Kindles don't play as nicely with sideloading)i'm a kobo enjoyer myself but any of the more foreign ones like Pocketbook should be just fine if you don't care about having a huge integrated bookstore. Also stay away from color screens unless you really need it for manchild comic reasons. They're not ready for prime time yet and are a noticeable step down from a monochrome screen when viewing regular text

ruins edition FAQ:>What is worldbuilding?Worldbuilding is the process of creating entire fictional worlds from scratch, all while considering the logistics of these worlds to make them as believable as possible. Worldbuilding asks questions about the setting of a world, and then answers them, often in great detail. Most people use it as a means of creating a setting or the scenery for a story.>"Isn't there a Worldbuilding general in >>>/tg/ already?"Yes, there is. However, that general is focused on the creation of fictional worlds for the intended purpose of playing TTRPG campaigns. Here you can discuss worldbuilding projects that are not meant to be used for a roleplaying setting, but for novels, videogames, or any other kind of creative project.>"Can I discuss the setting of my campaign here, though?"If you want to, but it would probably be better to discuss it on >>>/tg/ . We don't allow the discussion of TTRPG mechanics, however. If you want to discuss stats or which D&D edition is best, this is not the place.>"Can I talk about an existing fictional setting that is not mine?"Yes, of course you can!>"Does worldbuilding need to be about fantasy and elves?"Worldbuilding, as already stated above, and contrary to what many believe, does not inherently imply blatantly copying Tolkien. In fact, there are many science-fiction setting out there, and even entire alternative history settings which do not possess supernatural elements at all. Any kind of science fiction book has an implied setting at least, which involves a certain degree of worldbuilding put into it.Old thread: >>24868365
Harry Potter's magic genetic system was unironically great. On one hand, magic has a strong genetic component, so it isn't so common that everyone could have it. Something something when everyone's a super, nobody is.But on the other, magical strength isn't. The Scion of a centuries old family is not going to be naturally stronger than someone who was born from Muggles. So meritocracy and hard work still has a place in the system. It's also unironically the best way to turn Wizards into a separate tribe, because they are all part of a single genetic set. And also to create a social hierarchy based on which groups are more magic nationalist (ie more obsessed with whether your genes are more magic than others) without actually validating the Shonen Anime type eugenics.
There's not much space for character development if the enemy are unthinking, ontologically evil forces of destruction we can't really communicate with. That's my big grievance against stories that borrow Heinlein's "Bug War" narrative. I want wars against humans, not insects.
>>24987832Salamanders, lol.Other than that fire can work for any land or flying animal/insect. Like a swarm of all consuming fire ants could lead to potent and terrifying imagery. Meanwhile a cloud of fireflies could stress the beauty of dancing emblems in the night. Or a stampede of huge fiery bison that is symbolic of being in the destructive path of a raging wildfire. A fish would be weird but even that could work if weird is what you are going for.
>>24987890>the Shonen Anime type eugenics.Only show I can think of with such a trope is Naruto and to a lesser extent Bleach. Most others the protag just a combo of hard working and lucky, which is often a OP combination.

>>24987267The advice I got a few times is that you need a hook at the top and a pithy quote at the end that you bold for emphasis.>One man will end a war that has lasted centuries.>War hero Lawrence Mengde has done everything in his power to ensure that the Imperium and the Confederacy's century-long war finally comes to end. All he wants is to observe history, not to change it.>But when the Imperium hurls an asteroid fortress towards the capital planet, Lawrence must question his own role in the everlasting carnage.
