Old (I grew up in the 80s)The Piano TeacherJust finished. A bit of a slog. Stodgy writing and mostly boring. The film is better.Just started The Death of Grass. How have I missed this? I'm a fan of apocalyptic / disaster novels and this one is rolling right along. So far, it reminds me of The Day of the Triffids in tone, but it's early days yet.

67Against MethodThe thesis is incredibly important and changed (maybe coalesced is a better word) my thinking quite a bit, but the text itself is full of mistakes and extremely dated, cringe leftoid sentimentality. Overall a great book but it feels like it could be rewritten by someone else with modern knowledge and become even better. About halfway done with it now, might skim the rest as I'm already convinced and dont find much of the argumentation all that compelling in detail.

300 pages in…. When does it get good?
>>25206909The Interdependence Day puppet-show and Don Gately AA meetings part. You're getting close. Of course, it's good from the start, but that's when it all really started to click for me on the first read-through and I started really having fun reading it.People meme about IJ being hard, but really if you put in some level of effort, it's really a fun and breezy novel that crams a huge amount of substance into its 1000 pages especially considering how accessible most of the book is.If you quit right now, you will hate it, but if you finish it you'll finish excited to read it again.

>>25208215Context is important. The line in question is a tattoo that one of the Ennet House residents has, if I remember correctly. DFW explicitly states that tattoos are one of the indelible long-term consequences that the addicts will have to live with for the rest of their lives, even in sobriety. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but a line like that being a permanent tattoo almost seems to represent a perpetual state of adolescent melodrama. Given the novel's recurring motif of regression to childhood/infancy, trauma, stunted development, etc. that might be what DFW intended. Or else he was just poking a bit of fun at teenage angst.it's like if someone is making political posts where he quotes Johnny Gentle unironically and believes that's what DFW is saying about politics.

How come so few are reading my books? All I want are insightful reviews and a small army of loyal fans. Is that too much to ask?
>>25207165Dude, it's 2026, not 1926. You're competing with not only everyone who's alive, not only everyone who's ever lived, and not only artificial intelligence, but literally INFINITE distractions. You picked the wrong century to be creative. You should have been born earlier if you wanted to make things that would let you be remembered.
>>25207185This just makes me wonder how often someone said something like this a century ago. I wonder how many people told Franz Kafka that literature is a hoplessly dying medium. I wonder how frequently Kafka thought to himself that he'd never be remembered.
>>25207165What they mean is that visual media has barriers put into place to filter out 99% of the people trying to create stuff. Nobody values the ideas guy writer because there are far too many of you.For books there is no such barrier, you could in theory put it on Amazon before the end of the day and start selling it. Will anyone read it? Well, no, but that's a different question entirely.

>>25207229How many people told lottery winners that there was no point in playing the lottery? Probably a lot.But what conclusion can you possibly draw from that? The broken part of your brain might really want to believe there's an inverse relationship between the likelihood of something happening vs. how many people say it's not going to, but we know that's not true. What it actually means is this: do what you like, but don't expect the result, don't plan for the result, don't modify other parts of your life in anticipation of the result, don't harm or sacrifice parts of your life in the hope that the result will retroactively make it worth it, etc.

Yet another obvious data mine thread, holy shit
Okay, ive been sitting on this for months and i really cant anymore. im a production assistant at Bantam Spectra, been here for years. i am not going to post any proof because i actually want to keep my fucking job.The manuscript was delivered internally in January 2026. Not a partial. The actual full thing. GRRM apparently finished it sometime in late 2025 and the silence from his blog has been intentional, marketing told him to go dark.We have been in full editorial and layout pipeline since February. The official announcement is embargoed until Comic-Con, but we know hes going to announce it on his blog first because he doesnt give a fuck, with the actual release window being around fall. They want those holiday sales. The book is long, like long long, think AFFC and ADWD in one book, I wont say the word count because that alone would identify the source, but its about 1600 manuscript pages. People will not be disappointed on that front. The marketing team has been talking about a coordinated campaign that involves HBO so theres probably content planned to drop alongside the release, ill let you guys figure that out.Ill check this thread for a bit but i wont confirm or deny details that could identify me. Dont ask me stupid shit and yes jon is back lol

>>25208053 >Does Bresson count as new waveNah, he's from an older generation. I'm not an expert on Bresson but I think his first movies are at least from the 1940's and he's known as a very unique "old wordly" character. I saw L'argent not too long ago, it's ok, decent. If you like the idea of young delinquents scamming people out of money in 1980's Paris you might enjoy it. It's like a lukewarm 7/10 for me. I'm probably going to try and see the movie about the donkey next. Le Hasard Balthazar I think It's called IDK my French is very shitty. >I like dreamy pictures and I want to check out Alain ResnaisJe T'aime Je T'aime and his most famous debut Last Year at Marienbad really lean in to this.>issues with going to the cinemaAnon, 99% of films I watch I watch on the Tv screen connected to my laptop. tbf, a lot of movies I like especially niche Japanese ones never get official releases and are fansubbed anyways. But I do understand you grievances, I assume the people taking pictures and videos are making a reel for Instagram. It's like people taking pictures of a plate of food or something, again I don't attend screenings that much and when I do it's in a very nice place that even has a silent movie room with an actual resident piano player lolI'm lucky in a sense that most of my friends (2, maybe 3 people) that enjoy classic cinema tend to have fairly overlapping tastes and I usually just talk to them about: Yo, haven't seen you in a month what movies did you watch? Oh, ok cool I'll check that one out. There's very little actual discussion, more like general comments. Idk, I never understood the obsession specifically Americans have with "discussing" cinema. It's meant to be viewed, not talked about.>nod off I have been there myself (on occasion, recreationally) but I couldn't watch a movie while having trouble keeping my eyes open. I'd rather listen to an album or even go to a music festival in this state xd
>>25208139sick, you have nice recommendations, although i already now last year at marienbad, iwatch a lot of movies at home too, but going out to the movies is one of the few times i leave the house, i need the vague socialisation with the cashier to stay sane, and at one cinema theres some guys who i can talk with about movies a bit, some of my concersations i have about movies are like you and your friends, but i like categorizing stuff extremely, so i always talk about a friend i meet sometimes about directors, actors, the componist, themes, sets camera guys, writers and such, and what influenced it and what was influenced by it and so. What i gain from it? Nothing. But i like to put these things into boxes and smaller boxes. Same with music and literature and its just fun that at one point you see the gradients and how it all developes and flows once you know enough works.I like going strung out to classical concerts too basically 8/10 toes i go out im high desu ever read confessions of an opium eater to stay on /lit/? Was scary how similar his lifestyle was once i read itEver seen cafe lumiere or april story? if not, They are smaller very comfy japenese movies , you might enjoy themhave you seen april lumiere

>>25207985>I hear "What the buddha taught" is a good introductory text. It does the job of the basics but leans into scientism and openly promotes an annihilationist interpretation of Pariniravana.
>>25207999Thanks for letting me know, anon.>openly promotes an annihilationist Do you remember what gave you this impression? I skimmed through Chapter 6, on anatta, and he seems to be making the case for cessation rather than annihilation. Because there's no permanent, unchanging soul, there's nothing to be annihilated after parinirvana. What English introductory book do you think does a fair job of getting the core message across?
>>25205454You're confusing Advaita illusionism with Buddhism. Buddhism definitely says they are real. That they have causal efficacy. Its the advaita that says its all fake and just part of greater Brahman. The dependence origination is the causal efficacy of our existence.
>>25208131> Do you remember what gave you this impression? When he openly states that absolutely nothing remains about oneself or the individual remains existent in Pariniravana, and he also says nor is there any sort of positive plenitude there that one can be identified with even in a qualified sense. This contradicts Buddha’s stated stance in the Aggi-Vacchagotta Sutta where he refuses to endorse any of the 4 alternatives viz. post-death liberation. The idea that “anatta means there is no real annihilation as such even though there is nothing present in Parinirvana and its just the ending of aggregates and nothing more” is an interpretation Buddha himself never actually endorses and some people view it as veering too close to annihilationism. Most of Vajrayana and some Mahayana would view the above take as deeply mistaken and they would say that even though Dharmakaya is not a discrete entity that it is still nonetheless essentially what you are right now and how you abide in or as its luminous presence in Parinirvana.
>>25208147> You're confusing Advaita illusionism with Buddhism. The first part of his description is correct that Buddhism does not generally posit any inherent teleological or casual relation between all that exists and the Buddhist endpoint of (Pari)Nirvana, although there are certain schools which are exceptions to this like Shingon where all of reality is just part of the ongoing teaching of the cosmic Buddha. To equate a lack of teleological orientation with non-existence as he does in the second half is philosophically sloppy and indefensible though.
The main thinkers of the new right, BAP, Nick Land and Curtis Yavin, all agree on many things but one of the most important things is that Thiel is a potential philosopher king and perhaps the hero who can save capitalism from the Marxist menace, and usher in a neo-feudal technocracy ruled by Übermenschen
