Sup, stackers? These threads are pushback against the stack threads that are just people showing off crap they bought that they'll never actually read. Post last week's stack, post this week's stack, and tell us what you read. I finished The Lost Languages and The Antiques Magpie since the last time I posted a stack thread. I felt reading a novel so I started reading David Gates' book Jernigan. I'm about halfway through and it's alright.

My Heart Ran 18 Kilometers: The Earth Trembled With MeChild of breath, gold-borne son,he ran, eighteen thousand heartbeats. The earth turned and trembled, time marched through his living veins, beating against the sun.
The air trembles with unspoken alphabets,Arabic vowels blooming beside French sighs,Each sound is a child learning to breathe again.
What will we do, now that the Temple is gone? The Activated, now exiled from their home-stations live aloofIn line with glyphmakers who bound them in commerce-sigils.Without no-thing to signal to them, they fall.Unactivated, trapped in eternal Rubedo, burning further and further away. They burn for nothing but an eternal jade, unable to match your brilliant blood,Your sacred, burning heart, bearing light not seen since the time of Genesis. But your Tribe, transcending time imaginary, lies now only a ghost.

As it it impossible to ascribe an objective value judgment to non-existence, any attempt at an objective comparison to existence is inherently fallacious. Sharing the same bed with someone of the same sex is not an indication of one's sexuality. Abraham Lincoln frequently slept with his bedmate Harold Speed yet he still remained loyal to his wife, Mary Lincoln. The idea that physical intimacy is intrinsically linked to sexuality only causes more confusion and frustration regarding relationships and the body. Imposing sexuality on simple acts such as bedsharing or handholding only contributes to the loneliness epidemic and the crisis of meaning men are facing right now. From Jaeger:>Richard, Duke of Aquitaine, son of the King of England, remained with Philip, the King of France, who so honored him for so long that they ate every day at the same table and from the same dish, and at night their beds did not separate them. And the King of France loved him as his own soul; and they loved each other so much that the King of England was absolutely astonished at the vehement love between them and marveled at what it could mean.

Almost finished with this banger, but I'm well past the point where he discusses President Grant's Civil War involvement. What's the next book I should pick up if I want to keep learning about the Civil War?I will also admit, Ron Chernow is super educated so there was a word a page that I didn't know and had to google. The whole thing was super hard but very satisfying to read. I'll share a passage that stuck with me:>When the first barrage of Mexican cannonballs bounced toward American lines, soldiers sidestepped them easily. Then a cannonball streaked through the air near Grant, missing him but shattering the skull of an enlisted man, spattering his blood and brains on surrounding soldiers.I can't help but think of a twisted game of dodgeball where if you lose, you die. Having only heard stories of modern warfare, looks like war hasn't changed a whole lot... still horrible.

I’m about 450 pages into this. It’s set almost entirely in Washington DC and the main focus is on Lincoln’s cabinet and all the political infighting going on behind the scenes. Plus the parade of generals. According to Vidal, Lincoln liked Grant and that’s about it. Historical fiction though so there are a couple fictional characters in the mix.
Let’s talk about books, authors, philosophies, philosophers, or plain ideas that you ultimately reject, whether it’s their application to your life, the values they advocate or imply, or the propositions they propose, but still respect for being thought-provoking and actually interesting. I’m a theist of the Christian persuasion, probably on the path toward Eastern Orthodoxy, and I find pic-related pretty fascinating, even artistically inspiring. An honorable mention would be Schopenhauer’s aesthetics. What about you anon?

If the KJV Bible isn't divinely inspired writing, then why has no English writer been able to better it in prose? Why can't any of the atheist bros write that well?
