Tolkien is to blame for the state of 5e and generic fantasy that you see in TTRPGs. We wouldn't have horrible big fat fantasy books, nor power fantasy / wish fulfilment, which you find in scaling levels through so-called "XP". Fantasy used to be an experimental, creative, and wild genre filled with mad imagination; now, it is all wooden and samey. >tl;drListen to this:https://voca.ro/1Rwc7lMX0hfT

Thread #01 Winter Wonderland.Welcome to /un0/, an RP thread for playing a World of Darkness/Chronicles of Darkness Hunter. For any OOC questions about WoD/CofD, check the official general. >>97089644Rules:>We are acephale. There is no storyteller, we are not a quest. >This thread is based primarily but not exclusively in the nWoD/CofD game Hunter: the Vigil. However, Vigil is defined by being highly setting agnostic, with a system for creating entirely custom monsters that do not exist in other WoD/CofD games. Thus, you have significant freedom in what you want to play and what you want to hunt. Feel free to play a member of the Society of Leopold, or a member of the Lucifuge hot on the tail of a Lasombra. >Namefagging is encouraged but by no means mandatory. >Keep in mind that even highly experienced Hunters typically only have fractured pieces of the puzzle, and every table has their own canon. Please play an actual Hunter. >Spoiler any OOC discussion.Happy hunting.

Why is the best strategy to wait in jail and just collect money?Who designed this crap?
Based on real life monopolies but you never go to jail since it's always delayed
>>97211526The entire point of the game was to show that the modern system of landlords and renters was inherently unfair and led to the accumulation of wealth by the landholding class.Doing nothing and collecting money being the winning strategy wasn't intentional per se but is definitely in keeping with the spirit of the intent of the game.Sometimes games are designed with things aside from fun as their main purpose.
>>97211551To be a proper example of the Landlord system, one or two players should start with all the properties in their possession, with the other players only paying rent, being gifted with a few if they are related, or going up for grabs if a main player dies.

What are your experiences with in-game moral and ethical dilemmas and players saying, "At the climax of our journey, we turn around and leave"?I feel as though a lot of GMs' attempts at in-game moral and ethical dilemmas are unwittingly sabotaged by adventure inertia and players' desire to avoid saying, "At the climax of our journey, we turn around and leave."The way I usually see it structured, a bunch of antagonists stir up trouble. The PCs agree to help the locals. The party investigates some dangerous place or situation. Then, at the very end of the adventure, the PCs see that the antagonists have some vaguely justifiable reason for causing trouble. The above structure is perfectly fine (and indeed, I have used it many times myself as a GM), but where things get janky is when the antagonists sincerely plea for the PCs to just turn around and leave, and the GM earnestly expects this to be an option that should be seriously taken into consideration.I have never, ever seen this happen, for understandable reasons. Very, very few players want to say, "At the climax of our journey, we turn around and leave." It is much more common for the players and their PCs either work out a compromise with major concessions from the antagonists, beat up the antagonists, or both (i.e. beat up, restrain, work out compromise and major concessions from position of power).(Continued.)
>>97202404I dunno how you feel about it, but exterminating the fae seems like the morally satisfying choice to me. If the fae view me as cattle and are totally unwilling to compromise, then it's only right that I remove them from the material plane. And if this sparks a conflict with the entire faewild, then better to get it over with now; if all the fae are just as unreasonable as this bunch, then it was only a matter of time until something else pisses them off.
>>97201819>DMs will either create such scenarios that have a "correct" option>or worse have ones that only have bad ones as far as the DM is concernedThe absolute worst moral dilemmas are those that have only bad options, but the DM still treats one of the bad options as the "correct" one, and unfairly punishes you (reduced reputation, falling paladins, etc.) if you don't pick it.
>>97202901>This isn't really a moral dilemma. This is someone holding themselves hostage unless you do what they want. But this is literally what PCs always do.
>>97209938How so?
I love putting dilemmas when writing oneshots.Usually i try to balance 3 things:>the heroic thing, aka help the little people.>personal gain. Lile tons of gold or political power.>initial quest inertia. Some of the things can be split.Like one choice can help one group of people, while the other choice another group. So the heroic choice is split.Usually i split one of the things in two, so it 1.5 things vs 1.5 things.I run my default intro adventure with many many groups (5) and so far their choices were 50/50
Why is it that so many fantasy writers make their evil cults unjoinable by anyone with a functioning brain cell? Like why would you worship Orcus, whose goal is omnicide? Why would you worship Tzeentch if he’s probably gonna screw YOU over as part of his grand plan? What makes it so bizarre to me is that, firstly, it’s not like they need to be so off-putting to be evil. Orcus is a demon of undeath, his followers want to turn their enemies into the undead. Tzeentch wants the world to be in a constant cycle of chaos, his followers are gonna be masterminding world wars.Secondly, it’s not like we don’t have plenty of examples of real-world evil cults. A lot of cults in the West don’t follow Super-Duper-Mega-Murder Satan, but are fucked-up offshoots of Christianity. Historically, goetia was practiced by people who would’ve still called themselves Christians, while committing rituals to summon and get boons from demons. Plenty of human cultures used to sacrifice humans to their gods, not to summon them to kill everyone or some shit, but to honor and/or appease them.Like to use another example from Warhammer, I think Nurgle and Khorne present more “approachable” evil cults. Nurgle is toxic positivity, and his love will take all the pain away. Khorne is wrapped up in enough language about honor to lure people in.Like to rework an evil deity, let’s pick Lamashtu. Instead of “We love ugliness and miscarriages and also you get to die in childbirth”, the cult targets vulnerable young women and lures them in with divine feminine language (“You have the power to bear and raise great beasts”), while promising the young men of monstrous races frustrated living among humans that what they’re scorned for is what makes them powerful (and also they get to have sex with pretty girls).
>>97201845>Now imagine being myopically, solipsistically evilNobody wants to see himself evil. There are many other reasons to join some evil cult. For example, that's what is told us by Willd Durant:The most terrible of the gods were under the earth. In caves and clefts and like nether chambers dwelt those chthonian or earthly deities whom the Greeks worshiped not by day with loving adoration, but at night with apotropaic rites of riddance and fear. These vague nonhuman powers were the real autochthonoi of Greece, older than the Hellenes, older perhaps than the Mycenaeans, who probably transmitted them to Greece; if we could trace them to their origin we might find that they were the vengeful spirits of the animals that had been driven into the forests or under the soil by the advance and multiplication of men. The greatest of these subterranean deities was called Zeus Chthonios; but Zeus here meant merely god. Or he was called Zeus Meilichios, the Benevolent God; but here again the words were deceptive and propitiatory, for this god was a fearful snake. Brother to Zeus was Hades, lord of the underworld that took his name. To placate him the Greeks called him Pluto, the giver of abundance, for he had it in his power to bless or blight the roots of all things that grew in the soil. Still more ghostly and terrible was Hecate, an evil spirit that came up from the lower world and brought misfortune, through her evil eye, to all whom she visited. The less learned Greeks sacrificed puppies to keep her away.
>>97207018>Nobody wants to see himself evilPlenty of theistic satanists openly acknowledge themselves to be evil and revel in it. I've personally met some.
>>97160877The thing about the Chaos gods is that they are supposed to embody all aspects of their particular theme not just the negatives.Like Khorne is the god of violence and destruction but he is also the god of martial prowess and warrior's honor, heck I'm not sure if it's still canon but it used to be that his followers killing defenseless innocents would piss off Khorne because there was no glory or skill in it.Slaanesh is the god of extreme degeneracy but he is also the god of things like romance so for example if some kindly couple in the universe falls in love and has a family he also draws strength from it despite it being an act of pure wholesomeness and him ostensibly being an "evil" god.Nurgle is the god not just of death and disease but rebirth and the cycle of life in general.Tzeentch is probably the least outright "bad" of the Chaos gods because he is simply the god of knowledge and wisdom and planning. Not to mention that unlike Khorne, who was born during a period of lots of wars amongst mankind, or Nurgle, who was born during the time of plague, or Slaanesh, who was born due to the Eldar having a galaxy-wide murder-orgy, Tzeentch was born during a time of great scientific advancement in human civilization which is relatively benign compared to the other three.
>>97173471People in real life find solace in all sorts of petty distractions, when you're dirt poor but still have food, shelter, and community, it's not that odd you wouldn't care that some people live better lives than you. Also, those people are distant and very rare, it's far more likely that the most powerful person you'll meet on a regular basis is a town elder or magistrate, or maybe a cleric at a local church. You might not ever even see adventurers pass by, and if you do it's more likely to be weak ones that are above a commoner but not absurdly so.I could see more of outlook like yours being a thing for superhero settings, where elite villains spring up every week and can only be thwarted by a powerful hero like Superman or Spiderman or whatever. Not only do people frequently come into contact with the supernaturally gifted, media coverage shoves it in their face every day. It's extremely hard to feel like you're in control of your destiny when the people of the city are just the playthings of demigods.

I like the lore of D&D, I like the mechanics of Warhammer Fantasy, so just for fun I want to try and build functioning armies for Warhammer Fantasy based on D&D creatures or factions. Anyone interested in getting shit done?

>>97206311The tricky thing with dnd is that regardless of the setting, it is designed so that most creatures and races are able to ally with/dominate/be subjected by most other creatures and races, so there will be a lot of interchangeable units >>97211756>KoboldsWould basically just be a gnoblar swarm with a few gimmick units and a few weak heroes>MindflayerThe mindflayers themselves would be all be hero or lord tier, wide range of potential units to pick from representing mind controlled servants >BeholdersThe beholders themselves would all be heavy weight lords or monstrous creatures in the 130 to 240 point range, again a wide range of henchmen available to them >DrowBasically just Dark Elves with spiders, spider themed spells, and options for slave soldiers from other races Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>97211923The power scaling in D&D vs Warhammer is pretty wildly different once you get past like fourth level shit. The armies would have to reflect this.
>>97211948As a general rule of thumb I go with the equivalent of a level 1 character is a 10 point model, a level 2 character is a 20 point model, etc. But this only really works when you are converting a D&D PC, important NPC, or large monster into a hero, lord, or monstrous creature For D&D huge creatures I would go with 20 points per level equivalent, and 40 points per level equivalent for a gargantuan D&D creature Where things really fall apart though is all the level 2-8 humanoids that tend to crop up during a long D&D campaign. At lower levels these guys would be bosses of a dungeon and thus should be treated as unit champions or heroes in a Warhammer Fantasy game system, but at higher levels they are just 100% forgettable mooks that can often be found in large numbers and are more suited as elite infantry in a Warhammer Fantasy game system. For those kinds of situations I would recommend going with D&D level equivalent times two plus four for the number of points the model would be worth in a Warhammer Fantasy system So for example, the basic bugbear warrior, which is usually seen as the equivalent of a level 2 PC character in most D&D editions, would be the equivalent of a 2*2+4=8 point model in a Warhammer Fantasy system, probably a beastman Gor or some sort of basic skirmisher
>>97206311>I like the mechanics of Warhammer FantasyVery fake thread detected, the mechanics of WHFB are so notoriously bad that the game actually died.

Black people even use light-skinned to describe Black people who are simply a different shade, but this does not make them whiteThe one line in a random book does not make a good case like at all, its great you think it validates whatever someone does but if youre sitting there wondering why the rest of the community thinks its out of place or odd it kind of speaks like a lack of social intelligence on your end

https://files.catbox.moe/8v6fdk.pdfNew Plume UpdateReworked unpopular classes, removed most of the lore/art aside from the absolutely essential. Added a new 5th sexmove slot that covers instinctive lewd things. Most of my effort has just been deciding on the color of the new theme, and juggling the balance concerns of my more devoted GMs/players so I don't destroy their favorite playstyle in the process.added a TL;DR"This is a d12 system designed with PvP in mind, and uses sex DURING COMBAT whenever a grapple happens. "Sexmoves" deal massive damage and cannot miss, so combat is a tense match where both opponent are trying to "pick" their battles! Characters operate similar to "Pokemon" in knowing about 4 skills and 4 sexmoves in fights. Classes and Races only supplement your strategies, while your choice of Skill/Weapons matter MUCH more."I plan to release this book here for free, but will still charge money for the one on itch.io. I plan to write a solo module/gamebook and will be posting an HD version of the book on itch.io that I'll not release. The Lore stuff I took out will become a Lore Book of sorts, since people seemed to like it a lot.I'm posting this system here because I think it's good, and covers the fabled "sex combat" that's being discussed here so much. Plume's combat is like a dance between open combat, and initmate grapples. The reward for actually fighting is hitting your opponent's defense and maybe converting a stagger into a free grapple. Some enemies more focused on lewds will want to try to charm you or grab you without fighting, so there's a large degree of positioning in this lewd game.Since lewd gamers definitely have no issue role-playing and likely have experience, this book is MOSTLY crunch. It's pretty shallow, but swamped in various options. Just pick your moves, and build whatever character you want.
