Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:>n00b DM's Guidehttps://pastebin.com/EVvt6P0B>n00b Player's Handbookhttps://pastebin.com/XALkXkV0>Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128Comment too long. Is there ANY miniature wargame that isn't insanely expensive? I'm talking about things you can buy in a box and play immediately, not "print your own minis" bullshit or things where you're forced to use proxies cause official models don't exist.

I always hear about the stir this caused, and recently about how bad or redeemable it is. I'm not certain about it myself because I dabbled with 3e and then got into 5e, never paid much attention to the scene during that entire era. What does /tg/ think of the system?

>>97826882The reality is no one who enjoys 4e will call it D&D. It's a constant complaint that tying it in with the D&D brand did more damage to it than aided it. It has its strengths, it has its weaknesses. One can either take it as it or leave it.>>97826889Such as?
>>97824276They're not. They're expanded on in the Rules Compendium, a few Dragon Magazine articles, and the Dark Sun material.
>>97826997nta The Rules Compendium came out in late 2010. Dark Sun campaign book came out in mid to late 2010, if that's even the book it's in. 4e came out in mid 2008. I found half a column in the 4e DMG, that was it. There were a couple f skills or something in the PHB that were good for wilderness.Having to wait more than two years for a book to be published, or regularly read a magazine in the hopes of stumbling across an article or two, or having to buy a setting book that also came out more than 2 years later, for something that was a core D&D feature is a dumb way of doing things. There's very little obvious wilderness rules material in the Dark Sun campaign book. There are two pages about travel and survival. Is there more?

Given that anime and anime inspired cartoon styles have become pretty much the norm or at least incredibly common in most other forms of indie entertainment (TTRPGs, videogames, comics, animation, even miniature wargames). How comes it remains a relatively rare style to find in board games, an industry that operates almost entirely in the form of independent creators and small studios? How comes it still carries associations of being an art-style of games "for kids"? It was so strange when pic related came out seeing people "warning" others that even tho "it looks like a game for kids, it's actually quite difficult and heavy".
>>97827255Maybe Japanese children are just more careful with their toys than you are.

>>97827141>that are definitely toy commercials and definitely(at least at first) were aimed at kidsthis is 90% of the reason that gundam was shortened to 40 episodes and would have been a footnote in japanese history if teenage girls werent writing letters to bring the show backgundam being aimed at kids was their biggest mistake because the teens who actually liked the show didnt buy the toyswhich is why when gundam came back with the compilation movies, the toys were gone and replaced with plastic model kits squarely aimed at older buyersthen when zeta gundam came out, the show was made from the ground up to cater to the seinen demographic, with silly elements like the gundam hammer removed, and with the mecha re-made to be more plamo friendly instead of toy friendly

>>97820147>>97826214I think that the core idea of God's Teeth is pretty good, and I really enjoyed the original actual plays that came out eons ago, but it's annoying that the game has been around for almost a decade now and the two campaigns that we have are both subversions of the "normal" Delta Green campaign that span the conspiracy and current eras and involve themes of agency, or lack thereof. The only other """*campaign"""" they've put forth is a series of 3 railroads and something I barely even remember in control group. It would have been nice to just take a single occult conspiracy, and then do an entire book about breaking that open. Instead it's just a constant stream of campaign frames for monster of the week games. DG needs its version of Masks.

>>97826527This one's good but frankly the most busted shit in that book are the benefits of the Order of the Chain. At 8th level they get a 2 action activity thats basically slam down but for grapple. Except if you use a flail or a spiked chain, you upgrade successes to crits on the grapple. And then at 12th for another feat they just get to ignore crit fails on all Grapple checks. Oh and also once you have someone grabbed, if they fail to Escape they actually crit fail instead (so they cant try again until their next turn) and if they crit succeed (which would let them move away for free) it gets downgraded to a pass.Paizo really arent beating the allegations of not playtesting this shit. And it stands out even more because the other hellknight options are meh, except the one that lets you be a peeping tom.

>>97826060>Any good ways to explain the difference between a mortal and a monster in your fantasy setting?I have three different types of soul, the aetheric soul of mortals, the elemental animus of elementals (elementals that have become self aware/distinct "races" essentially) and I forgot what I called the liminal/fae version. So "monsters" would be different from mortals on a fundamental level. Although mortals can become corrupted or otherwise changed into monstrous forms so I guess the distinction isn't so clear cut in all scenarios.
What are your in world slurs? Do elves call dwarfs diggers?
>>97827264Race based slurs aren't really impactful or all that insulting/offensive in my setting. Like the Blooded might refer to "lesser" peoples as stock (as in livestock, you know, because they literally feed off them or use them for their utility). But people are generally more concerned with what the blooded do, not what they say. There are still stories from before the Apex was revived, when powerful blooded did whatever they pleased in their domain, including horrific fleshcrafting and unethical experimentation. So just being referred to with dehumanizing language is basically nothing. Fera will refer to humans as hairless or baldies, since fera are covered in body hair. But it's generally seen as a childish insult with no real impact or venom behind it.Lizardmen will occasionally call the other races apes, but again there is no bite behind it.People got more serious shit to deal with then fantasy racism. Hell, to the people in Centennial, comments about piss and shit are FAR more offensive to them.Meanwhile to the people of Soul, blasphemy in general and especially blasphemy against their main god Sol, are fighting words that will get you killed. They have zero tolerance for it.
