Anyone play it yet? I like the "rustic fantasy" setting. The core rules seem interesting, it has more mechanics and gameplay than most other narrative games. I enjoy that it doesn't have moves or whatever to confine you, you can actually play your character and do whatever you want. It's got enough knobs and options in terms of resolution I feel like it's actually a real game despite having that more story focus vs simulation focus. And I like that the DM has all the traditional power of the DM and there's not like "Fate Points" or something else that gives players control to change stuff.Thinking I might try a short game for my table, just a few lower powered sessions. It also has good tools for a solo stuff which is interesting.

>gameplayFor Centaurs, you should be able to use them as mounts when not in combat if they're lightly armed & armored. I think you could ride into battle with them and fight on their back without overburdening them, depending on your loadout. Squeezing into dungeons and caves might be a bit of a bitch, and your centaur companion may find themselves too cumbersome to accompany you in certain locations. If people in wheelchairs can make do, I'm sure a transmog potion or a shrinking potion might solve the problem.>fantasy settingsThey're more at home here for sure, like having a horse. Some taverns may give you a hard "no" for your centaur companion, but I'm sure regions that are steeped in centaur culture or adjacent ones have accommodations for their unique anatomy. If nothing else, they could help carry your camp supplies and other provisions. >loadouts for fantasyIf you're not riding them, I think they can be pretty well armed and armored- think tower shield and a mace/flail. They also make good spearmen, so I think they'd be comfortable wielding a halbard and similar pike-style weapons. This would be with them wearing plate mail cuirass for the human portion and chainmail curtain over their horse hind quarters, or perhaps some specially fitted Gambeson. Other plate sections could be fitted to their horse body as needed. Archery and crossbows seem like they'd work for ranged options. I've not considered them using magic, but having a fairly mobile spellcaster seems cool as well.
>>97279219>logisticsThat's one of the main advantages I see with them. For adventuring, they can carry people and gear. For non-adventuring tasks, there's a lot of horsepower to spare for a number of tasks. I'd envisioned medical centaurs hauling a whole carriage of wounded or delivering supplies. This works for post-industrial worlds, but are pre-ubiquitous combustion engine worlds, where the tech for cars and planes is available, but horse-drawn stuff is still the mainstay. The WW2 and subsequent wars would have them doing more base construction and scouting, I think.>centaur style racesAll of the feats I listed up here >>97276510 should work with your tiger/komodo dragon/spider/whatever body, assuming your body is strong enough to act as a mount. I'm sure you could homebrew a few more feats if you wanted another effect.>>97279447I tend to have them a slave class with hand wave lore being "They used to be a tribal in the planes, but after losing several territorial wars, they became subjugated and restricted to reservations" akin to native american lore within the U.S. This also allows me to create muscular simple minded amazon style centaur women (this is my fetish), which is perfect for me. >>97279511At the very least, they have to find some stairs. There's some other bullshit you can do as well, but if transmog isn't an option, in some cases, centaur folk are just too big to navigate some dungeon sections.
>>97280717>I'd envisioned medical centaurs hauling a whole carriage of wounded or delivering supplies.This. I fail to see why EVERY race has to be able to occupy EVERY role in the military. This reeks of woke inclusivity bullshit. You don't want ork surgeons in the field hospital, unless they're dentists or something, maybe not even that. You don't let elves lug around boulder-sized hammers no matter how much they whine, bitch and moan. And you don't employ kobolds in heavily-armored shock troops.Everyone should play to their racial strengths, centaurs shouldn't be an exception to that simple rule.
>>97282271>military conscription and putting unsuited personnel to a position that needs to be filled is wokeI can assure you that despite all the propaganda, the military is not a well oiled machine where everyone can be their best selves.
>>97283238Try as you might, you won't be able to make a halfling wear the giant's armor and be an effective combatant.Throwing ill-equipped people at the enemy have never worked. You either outsmart or out-tech the opposition.>but muh Soviets…Were not fucking butchers, nor were they underequipped past the first couple of months.Outsmarting and McGyvering shit on the spot was happening left and right. If you don't have enough people to fill a certain role, you make do with replacement, i.e. using horses instead of centaurs where possible.Or you switch tactics entirely, such as resorting to sending saboteurs, and ambush or trap warfare when you've lost your orks and only have goblins on hand. You might get away by keeping a sizeable amount of people in reserve to even out the imbalances, but the expenses will add up quickly during a war.Either way, it would be rather silly to not take the mixed nature of one's army into account and set up contingency plans. This, by the way, highlights the difficulties associated with mixed race armies that rely on specific racial strengths.A less rigid structure would instead have a range of roles for races, or group races based on a set of common traits. It's gonna be a pain in the dick whatever you choose to do, but specialization has it's perks, namely higher potential of each specialized group.Comment too long. >>97283397They invested into space navy and asteroid mining. Plus they didn't religiously follow Hegemony building and grift practices. Just look at the shit Suns and Hegemony brought to Concordat during the war. Literally the only ship worth its money is New Syrtis - and there were only seven of them. Hegemony was around 50% Essexes and Lolas by mass. Plus FedSuns at the time were fucked after civil war and their ship crews and admirals were absolutely retarded. On the ground Taurians were lagging way harder.
>>97283433Shouldn't the other periphery states have been similarly overpowered relative to their size if the star league was so internally detrimental? All the others were total pushovers. For any great house to have matched their naval power it should have taken a fraction of their economy, asteroid mining returns would have also needed a relatively small investment to be similarly profitable for the great houses. It seems like the writers just made them really strong for the sake of giving the star league and actual opponent without providing reasonable justifications for their strength.
>>97283447The taurians were centuries more established as a state than the other periphery powers, I don't even think the outworlds were 50 at the time, so they effectively amounted to the old-established industrial core of any given SL member state, just without the big pile of minor colony worlds
>>97283397In the 2500's their worlds were densely populated, heavily industrialized supported by a booming mining industry. Having a lot of planets doesn't for shit if most of them are populated by a guy with a rake named Bob and his pet seagull named Alan.>>97283433>On the ground Taurians were lagging way harder.>>97283447In practice yes but its a lot more complicated. Rim Worlds was quite strong with a decent military and industry but it was aligned with the SLDF so it wasn't going to help out. When the Reunification War did happen they descended essentially into a civil war over it.Magistracy of Canopus were strong in medical science and had a very strong economy but that didn't translate to them having a strong industry to fall back on nor did they invest heavily on a strong military. So when the Reunification War did break out they did what they did best; spread their legs, welcome the invaders aboard and when the invaders guard was down gave them a pegging that fucked their economy up.Outworlds Alliance were an agrarian society essentially with a non existant military or industry. The best they had were a bunch of kids throwing snowballs at some Dracs. Ended up more as a proxy war between the Davions and Dracs with the Outworlders being caught in the middle.

How do you justify a "pest race" like goblins or rat people in your setting? Why wouldn't the dominant species make a concentrated effort to eradicate them if they were a problem?
>>97214004>(spartiates might have thought of helotes as "pests", but since it was literally illegal for a spartiate to work without losing citizenship...)The rest of your post got enough heat but this is also retarded.

It's fantasy dawg
In WEG' D6 Fantasy orcs, goblins, ogres and bugbears are created from other humanoid races. The most handy and large scale method is just burying humanoids to a cursed ground, which causes them to deform and rise again as mentioned evil races. They can also be created by corrupting humanoids through magical torture, and through evil races raping other humanoid women which results in offspring of evil race. This is all mostly done by evil wizards who want obedient minions who do their bidding as long as they are given something to hurt or smash on regular basis.

>>97281269
>>97281269It's a thread about ALL OSR games, hence the name "OSR General". The fact that you're bitter that your fave isn't old-school doesn't change that in any way.
>>97280846No young fren, I was there when osr was nascent. I had no real need for it. I had my old rule books so didn't need the reprints. Only reluctantly played 3e, even then our DMing and playing was old style in tone even with all those silly feats. Not sure why my friends adopted 3e rules, maybe cult of the new.I was here when people made the first osr generals. Outside of some trollish 4channers, and apparently outside of your blogger's head as he's wrongly conflating things, osr still means what it meant.Your opinionated little blogger hero doesn't get to redefine "osr" to suit his means. He's engaging in revisionism and I reject his attempt. Even if 2e was not, as in his opinion it isn't, "old school" it was and is part of osr and has been for 21 years or more. While it's nice to read him admit Cook wrote frames for modules, though unfortunately mistakenly trying to equate this with railroading, and that>such a thing isn't really different from several treasured modules released earlierhe has the rather poor and wrong opinion that>module tells you to place an encounter at a certain point in timeis bad. There's no real difference between a dm deciding to reschedule, omit or add an encounter all on his own, whether for a module or own adventure, and a dm deciding to do that based on advice from a module. It's called being clever, wise, adaptable. In a footnote he adds>I'm not arguing that the old-school method is the one true way to play D&D, though it's the one I prefer.but the trouble is he's talking about "the old school" when there wasn't a universal and monolithic "the old school" and old school isn't synonymous with old school renaissance.>>97281268Mine wasn't the first reply so you're being a bit choosy.Comment too long. It's been 2 weeks since I started playing sorcery with 2 booster boxes. Here are my thoughts> 1 booster box will give you 2 good decks and 1-2 mediocre at best> 2 booster boxes still only gave us 2 even better decks and 1 ok deck with high value cards> art is amazing. I'm feeling the same vibes when I played L5R ccg> multiplayer format will probably replace commander for us but the map I printed is 3mm thick and unfit for transport, on top of being huge> game has 2 flaws from being perfect> needs sleeves as picking the cards up and tokens is tricky>suffers from mid to late game card sandwich syndrome. Since all the cards need to be in a single space to bunker down yet they are in specific positions, they create an unwieldly card stack e.g.Tapped submerged unit with a ward tokenUntapped suberged unit with a stealth tokenSiteTapped avatarUntapped frog tokenuntapped minion with a tokenand so it goes. But any AoE spell in this stack results in game over so maybe its just our internal inexperienced meta that favours this late game tower of babel.Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.

Sharing useful wisdom that has helped me run more satisfying games. Trying to share some less common advice. These are my opinions and techniques that have helped me. I’d love to hear what has worked for other /tg/ DMs.1. Time pressure- adding time pressure through use of "clocks" including real life clocks is incredibly helpful to add pressure and tension to a scenario. Giving players choices but not enough time to make every choice adds meaning to those choices. Time pressure in combat is a contentious, but powerful tool to discuss with your players. Forcing a decision in seconds makes combat stressful and - when players are on board- fun (in anticipation of the common objection: if the players don’t make a choice in combat, I usually come back to them before round end, I never have them “just stand there”. Remember to assume character competency).2- The GM-ing engine- It's okay to front load content and prepare a few different rail-roady hooks in the first few sessions. Being a GM is like starting one of those old prop engines with a winch. It takes a while for the pistons (players) to kick into gear. Once they do, after a few sessions, all you need to do is apply gas. Solve the tavern problem by figuring out how characters know each other prior to the first session. 3- Immersion means impact- After a session, reflect on how the player choices affected the world (for good or ill), try to let the ripple of that effect emerge in the next session. Players that feel like they change the world around them invest in it.
>>97278798>9. OOC conversation Again, this is totally fine to do and necessary. Trying to get everyone to thespian it up all in character and do the dialogues all in character is a waste of everyone's time. Do not do this. Players and the GM can summarize a dialogue their character is making you do not have to nor should it be word-for-word in character dialogue. >I search my memory for blahblahbblah yeah fuck that. We don't have time for that shit and your immersion can't be that fragile or using a dice or a pen or reading in english or anything will snap it. You almost have it with characters basic knowledge, but you can just tell them that shit. Ties in with 7. >10. Fail forward meme Say what bluntly? >11. 3 sentence maximum Good. Less is more. Make it terse but evocative. >12. Reactive elaboration Yes, good. Make use of well tailored tables and background world thinking to make this more seamless. >13. Obstacles not solutions Again yes. Good. >14. Conflict Varies, too vague advice on your part to do much with. Generally always erring on xyz makes you predictable in ways your players are too polite to tell you they've figured out. Again, random tables are utility tools. Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>97282194>>97282249I hear your disagreements. It's interesting to see different approaches to GMing. I like your three bonus tips. Do you have any additional GM advice? I'm open to new ways of making the game better for my table.
>>97281895Railroading is using GM fiat to force a certain outcome. It's always a bad thing. Using the term railroading the way op does up there dilutes the meaning. You can have linearity in a scenario design without it being a railroad. You can have a five room dungeon, where each room leads into the next room, and there is a boss and a treasure in the last room. It is linear, but it's not a railroad unless the GM is using fiat to force specific outcomes in each room, for example making it so no matter how well you stealth roll is you always have to fight, there is no room for interesting strategy, whatever the case may be.I think that he was trying to say is a variation on what I believe for early in the campaign scenarios and one-shots, which is to start late. Don't start them in the tavern meeting the old man who gives them the map to the dungeon, start at the door to the dungeon saying "you're at the front door to the dungeon that the map you got from the old man in the tavern led to." Don't start in the briefing, start in the plane about to halo-drop into the hot zone. If possible, start in media res. This is a perfectly sensible way to start a campaign, and isn't "railroading."
I don't think there's anything wrong with your world having the internal consistency of a video game i.e. you only draw what the players need to see and make up shit from whole cloth when the unexpected happens (or you run out of prepped material). When I started out I thought statting up all the Shit That Nobody Cares About behind the scenes was important for consistency, but nobody cares about 90's style encounter tables where you roll a d100 and 80% of results are some boring mundane thing that bores people to tears. Players want to be entertained so break out the SUDDENLY if they start looking bored
OP has some good GM adviceI'm pretty sure it's a pasta or condensed into text GM advice video by some actually competent TTRPGtuber like Sethmaybe a compilation of several different videos>>97282194this post is bad GM advice

Why were so many of the "OG" game designers insufferable faggots? It seems like the vast majority of game designers from the 70s and 80s were self-obsessed dickheads who openly hated and looked down on their customer base. There were obviously exceptions, and some like Gygax would go on to regret and apologize for it, but still, what made so many "professionals" back then such fags?Pic related: WFRP author James Wallis's response to a letter criticizing how railroaded The Enemy Within campaign was.

There were maybe 4 or 5 clearly autistic members and only 1 of them was really insufferable to be around. It always makes me a bit sad when I see the old stereotypes getting flung around. I've only ever seen shopping carts full of pokemon boxes online. I've only ever heard about table flips online. I've only ever heard stories of hyper-sexual trans furbolg bard players online and usually from groups that generally sneer at our pastimes.
