Gun to your head, you can only put 5 humanoid/demihuman races in your setting. After those five, you’re done. You chose humans, elves, dwarves, halflings, and ents? No gobbos and orcs for you.

What are you choosing?

Does anyone happen to have a scan of the new BB edition book? Have a game with a friend tomorrow and wanted to get across the new rules, unless people recommend not bothering. Even then, it would be good to have in case my group goes that way anyway.

Aight, someone in a previous thread said they were starting a campaign and had three enforcer players. I've got 2 Orlock, 2 Escher, 2 Squat, and 2 Enforcers (and me). Why do people do this...

Mid-Colonial Island Adventure Setup & System Help
Hello fa/tg/uys and a happy new year. I'm planning a new campaign and would appreciate your collective wisdom. I'll lay out the pitch and would like your thoughts, ideas, and especially system recommendations.
The year is roughly equivalent to the early 1700s. The players are new arrivals or long-term residents of an island colony. Mere weeks after their arrival it becomes apparent that no ships from the homeland arrive. Ships sent out for help or trade simply vanish. The colony is now utterly isolated. Resources are finite, society is beginning to crack, and the unexplored interior holds ancient secrets.

>Resource Scarcity
No contact with the outside world. Every nail, bolt of cloth, and ounce of gunpowder is precious. Gold is the main currency, and it matters—for buying scarce supplies, hiring help, bribing officials or mayby hiring trainers if gold can be tied to character advancement.
>Low-to-Mid Magic
Magic is rare. Players won't be casting spells at the start. It's something discovered in the forest ruins or bargained for with strange spirits mid-campaign. Church sanctioned magic is the exception with high ranking members of the faith having access to considerable magical power.
>Healers for Hire
There are a few lowly priests of the faiths that can perform rudimentary healing rituals but demand some gold or favors. This type of healing and warding, especially against diseases, is used by the church to maintain power and influence. They're NPCs, not party members, at least initially and the most common source of magic.
>Zero to Hero
I would really like for the player to start really low powered. More akin to semi-skilled commoners than competent adventures and it should take time for them to actually become strong and capable. I would like for them to eventually become big players in the island. Maybe even hold titles or positions of power.

You could homebrew that off of ReConquest very easily. The skill system would work and the magic may also (the magic is generally rooted in Scandinavian folklore and has usage conditions and restrictions associated with that, maybe alternate it so that natives have their own rules for casting magic, colonists also do, different gods and spirits respond to them, learning the other's magic would probably be an ordeal and require being accepted into the other culture as one of their own. It also natively has that divide between folk tradition magic and church magic, with sorcerers dealing with spirits and bards using divine magic)

It also has a system built in for terrain generation and exploration and very detailed rules for travel, survival, building frontier societies. The game is about resettling a 'lost' continent.

It's a completely different flavor, but that's easy to change up for your own use. Oh, and the system was made by an autistic white nationalist and convicted murderer, if that matters to you.
>>97271531
One thing to consider is that gunpowder does not need to be imported and can be made rather simply. Conquistadors made it after arriving in the new world. The ingredients are simply sulfur (found near volcanoes as mineral deposits), charcoal (burning wood), and potassium nitrate (saltpeter) which can be found in bat guano deposits (caves). Basically, even an isolated colony could likely produce their own gunpowder. Depending on the timeframe of your setting they may also be aware of the "French method", of isolating saltpeter from urine primarily from stables, that began in the late 1700s.
>>
>>97271332
so the colony of roanoke

well it sounds like a perfect fit for mythras to me. these low power, commoner to hero, low magic kinda realistic games are the type of games it excels at
>>
>>97280104
colonial gothic is also an underrated game that i ppreciate and would fit very well what you re trying to do
>>
you should probably use the Barbarians of Lemuria system to play this; with some of the added rules from Honor+ Intrigue, which explicitly is designed for games set in the 17th-18th century.
>>
Thanks you all kindly for your system recommendations. Currently I am leafing through the ones I could find.
>>97277226
I would like something less rigid that the class system offered in OSE. For starters I wouldn't like anyone starting as a magic-user. It's generally too high-fantasy/magic for my use case, I think.
SotDL Could kind of work. The path system and traditions are flexible enough and could be introduced later in the campaign. I would agree that D6s are swingy as boon/banes. D4s don't roll. D3 sound like a good compromise.
>>97279797
Couldn't get my hands on beyond the wall for free yet. I don't know If it's available in the share thread, I will look it up. Mythras indeed looks like something that could work for my use case but I will have to find whatever sourcebooks support a 1700s setting better because the core seems more focused in a fantasy bronze age.
>>97279904
I respect Varg for being a dedicated and professional LARPer but I have at least two players that would refuse to touch any game with his name on it. Good point on gunpowder though. I haven't thought about making the island volcanic but maybe I will. Colonial Gothic seems too into it own thing to be of use but I will add it to my reading list.
>>97282747
Barbarians of Lemuria/honor+intrigue seems like a good fit generally. The way careers and magic work is very fitting but I am afraid it will be far too pulpy for what I am going for. .

>there are no "skills" for armor etc
Not in official material, no. But I did make some stuff like that. Some Kroot talents, for instance, are dependent on wearing light armor.
>narrative speeds
I use degrees of success based on Navigate and Survival tests to determine the days or hours a trip to a zone takes, and how many rations or food items it consumes / can be created or replenished on-site. Most of my teams tend to stay together, however, since separating means getting wrecked.
>Unnatural strength
Still good for melee damage
>It even impacts you jumping
Well, there was that one time everyone wall-kicked off the techpriest to jump over a forgepit. Usually, everyone just hookshots over with a grapnel if they're mortal. Last series, the deathmark just teleported everywhere and the cryptek and praetorian could fly, so it was just the royal warden who needed to worry about running.
>lifting shit
The only time I ever looked at the lifting rules was to play a prank on someone. Otherwise, I've done lifting and carrying as a Degree of Success extended challenge, since it's usually tied to an objective of some kind.

Black Crusade has complications to making weight matter since for space marines in power armour their carry weight is crazy. It's only came up so far with minions especially the serf and aspirant minions who were always encumbered like pic related.

I haven't limited how many weapons they could carry (currently they aren't carrying unreasonable numbers of weapons) but just houseruled that weapons they could actually draw in combat without using an action to fish them out was limited to whatever was in their hands plus 2 maglock points excluding grenades (obviously heavy weapons can't be put away or maglocked). I also kept track of ammo. It's been a very effective tension/risk reward mechanic as they currently are wandering homeless renegades with no resupply and legion ammo is hard to find in almost all places. Obviously that will become less of an important choice once they get shit like a ship or hideout.
>>
>>97272190
Well yeah there's that side to it, but also in general the whole point of having these rules is to provide a simulation of "reality" (as reality exists in that universe). If say, just for one example a regular human in only a bodysuit is tanking more damage than an ogryn, that weakens the simulation. The more this kind of thing is done the more it erodes this framework put in place to provide such a simulation, and nothing fucking matters right? You're all working to collaboratively make this big cool story, but if you're not following a cohesive set of rules your story is tantamount to toddlers in the sand pit bashing toys together and blowing raspberries. Like who cares if X character did something real epic and survived Y to pull off Z when this character is coated in plot armour and constantly rolling crazy high, nigh impossible to fail tests because we're all ignoring what's actually on the character sheet and the action/combat rules in the book? Just something to bring up to them and see what they say.
>>
>>97282674
Totally agree. If you don't want to use the system then don't use the system in my opinion.
>>97279937
The main thing is if your dudes are having fun at the end of the day and it sounds like they are. For me personally you're just not playing dark heresy, you've taken it and changed it into something else. It's funny to me because dark heresy is system I see being bastardized this way the most. You even see it on /tg/ where people recount epic tales but when you know the system you're like "they either were not following RAW by miles, or they're making it up."

Welcome to /un0/, an RP thread for playing a World of Darkness/Chronicles of Darkness Hunter. For any OOC questions about WoD/CofD, check the official general. >>97224887

Rules:
>We are acephale. There is no storyteller, we are not a quest.
>This thread is based primarily but not exclusively in the nWoD/CofD game Hunter: the Vigil. However, Vigil is defined by being highly setting agnostic, with a system for creating entirely custom monsters that do not exist in other WoD/CofD games. Thus, you have significant freedom in what you want to play and what you want to hunt. Feel free to play a member of the Society of Leopold, or a member of the Lucifuge hot on the tail of a Lasombra.
>Namefagging is encouraged but by no means mandatory.
>Keep in mind that even highly experienced Hunters typically only have fractured pieces of the puzzle, and every table has their own canon. The night is dark and full of misinformation.
>/un0/ is conceived of as an experimental end to end encrypted program that is very hard to compromise, retains very little data and purges that data regularly. Please play an actual Hunter.
>Spoiler any OOC discussion.

Happy hunting.
Unless this thread somehow takes off like a rocket, this will be the last un0 thread for the foreseeable future. Towards the end of the thread, please give your feedback in regard to these shorter, limited run RP threads.

You mean before this? Had to duck out of Thanksgiving for an exorcism, because the spirit was gonna kill the host if we didn't do it then and now. I don't even bother with Halloween anymore, there's always some bullshit on Halloween. Before that I was at an open house where there was a haunting.

>Did he get a drink spilled on?
Not sure what you're asking here. I didn't see anyone throw a drink in his face. He was whooping my ass during the fight, hit me so hard I went staggering back and almost fell into the fireplace. He was hesitant to follow so I called him a pussy while I grabbed a fire poker as a weapon. That pissed him off enough to get back in my face, when he grabbed the poker I let it go, grabbed his beard, dropped to the ground to use his high center of mass against him, and managed to pull part of it into the fireplace. It burned my hand his beard went up so fast. His pals didn't wanna get close to him, and there wasn't much water for him to put himself out with, so he died screaming running out of the house.

>Have you ever checked to see if you're cursed?
I'm just bitching. I managed to have an uneventful Christmas.

>hopefully the others don't bother ya.
Now that definitely won't be happening. I'm no vampire expert, but I got a cellmate who knows them a bit better than usual. He says that vampires come in two flavors: Smart with a low profile and loud, aggressive, and stupid. The former basically never make it on Hunter's radar and if they do by bad luck, they prefer to just wipe our minds and move on. The latter make up a good 90% of the ones hunters actually fight, and trying to turn a whole New Years party sounds a lot like the latter. I'll be seeing them again.

That's good. One can never be too careful in our line of work. If it ever gets too rote in happening be sure to check for curses.

What’s the consensus on solo wargaming? With Battletech Aces I’ve considered trying to run a campaign or convert the rules to classic somehow. I know Killteam has co-op, but I’ve never tried it and idk if they have campaign mechanics. Are these rulesets ass? I want to be able to use my minis on those weeks I can’t meet with my friends.

Solo wargames are quite normal, though I mostly see them in historical themes.
Not sure about the BT Aces system or Kill Team.
>>

Playing with toy soldiers has been around as long as toy soldiers, so yes it's very normal.
I've found the main limitation is whether you're able and willing to play "fairly" - I for one always end up favouring one side or the other. And while I don't tend to fudge rolls or cheat, making better decisions for one side than the other makes for a pretty uneven game. Best thing I've found is to just lean into it straight away and play "your dudes" against enemy forces with the latter having more dudes but acting semi-randomly.
Also the solo RPG thread gets some solo wargame discussion.

>gameplay
For Centaurs, you should be able to use them as mounts when not in combat if they're lightly armed & armored. I think you could ride into battle with them and fight on their back without overburdening them, depending on your loadout. Squeezing into dungeons and caves might be a bit of a bitch, and your centaur companion may find themselves too cumbersome to accompany you in certain locations. If people in wheelchairs can make do, I'm sure a transmog potion or a shrinking potion might solve the problem.
>fantasy settings
They're more at home here for sure, like having a horse. Some taverns may give you a hard "no" for your centaur companion, but I'm sure regions that are steeped in centaur culture or adjacent ones have accommodations for their unique anatomy. If nothing else, they could help carry your camp supplies and other provisions.
>loadouts for fantasy
If you're not riding them, I think they can be pretty well armed and armored- think tower shield and a mace/flail. They also make good spearmen, so I think they'd be comfortable wielding a halbard and similar pike-style weapons. This would be with them wearing plate mail cuirass for the human portion and chainmail curtain over their horse hind quarters, or perhaps some specially fitted Gambeson. Other plate sections could be fitted to their horse body as needed. Archery and crossbows seem like they'd work for ranged options. I've not considered them using magic, but having a fairly mobile spellcaster seems cool as well.

>logistics
That's one of the main advantages I see with them. For adventuring, they can carry people and gear. For non-adventuring tasks, there's a lot of horsepower to spare for a number of tasks. I'd envisioned medical centaurs hauling a whole carriage of wounded or delivering supplies. This works for post-industrial worlds, but are pre-ubiquitous combustion engine worlds, where the tech for cars and planes is available, but horse-drawn stuff is still the mainstay. The WW2 and subsequent wars would have them doing more base construction and scouting, I think.
>centaur style races
All of the feats I listed up here >>97276510 should work with your tiger/komodo dragon/spider/whatever body, assuming your body is strong enough to act as a mount. I'm sure you could homebrew a few more feats if you wanted another effect.
>>97279447
I tend to have them a slave class with hand wave lore being "They used to be a tribal in the planes, but after losing several territorial wars, they became subjugated and restricted to reservations" akin to native american lore within the U.S. This also allows me to create muscular simple minded amazon style centaur women (this is my fetish), which is perfect for me.
>>97279511
At the very least, they have to find some stairs. There's some other bullshit you can do as well, but if transmog isn't an option, in some cases, centaur folk are just too big to navigate some dungeon sections.
>>
>>97280717
>I'd envisioned medical centaurs hauling a whole carriage of wounded or delivering supplies.
This. I fail to see why EVERY race has to be able to occupy EVERY role in the military. This reeks of woke inclusivity bullshit.
You don't want ork surgeons in the field hospital, unless they're dentists or something, maybe not even that.
You don't let elves lug around boulder-sized hammers no matter how much they whine, bitch and moan.
And you don't employ kobolds in heavily-armored shock troops.

Everyone should play to their racial strengths, centaurs shouldn't be an exception to that simple rule.
>>
>>97282271
>military conscription and putting unsuited personnel to a position that needs to be filled is woke
I can assure you that despite all the propaganda, the military is not a well oiled machine where everyone can be their best selves.

You should ALWAYS cheese every encounter. If you EVER end up in a situation that even remotely resembles a fair fight, just run away and wait until you can rig the situation to your favor.

Use your fucking brain. Even if it is highly improbable for you to lose a given fight, statistically speaking, you'll still eventually croak if you keep taking those bets. Don't leave it up to chance. It's easier than you might think, you just need to use your noggin. It's not a video game. You can do whatever the fuck you want.

Just the other night my party ran into a melee monster in a narrow ass room that they for some reason decided to ram their dicks into until someone died. When I suggested that we retreat for a bit and lure it into the room with the big ass statues so we can all just climb them and shoot it to death, they looked at me like I just escaped from the looney bin. They all died of course.

eh, I make a character that's meant to die so I can gauge what kind of game we're playing. Always a front liner so I can really get a feel for the danger presented.

If they don't die, great. I find people like my simple characters more, or just the way I play them.

This is how I run WFRP2e.

The whole hobby is grateful for the fact that you don't play.

Question of the Thread:
Should mecha have hands? Should the hands be humanlike? If they shouldn't have hands, what should they have? If no hands, why even have arms?

>I get the feeling it's easier to play than it is to read.
This is very much true. The rulebook itself is needlessly bloated and written in a cumbersome manner, but the core system itself really is simple when it comes down to it.
The real tricky part is keeping track of various 'side' rules that are hidden away in various paragraphs.

Though I played it with some simplification to the damage system as well, since the default one is pants-on-head retarded.

> Also I'm itching for that St. Vincent material for HG 4e
Same. The new stuff they've added like the Oasis Depths module sounds awesome.

>Don't think so, but you might be able to just build Roadstrikers from scratch.
Easily!
>Or maybe use the ATs from the Votoms Fuzion book.
ATs, Gears... whazzadiffrence?
>I think Old SilCore is similar enough to Mektons Interlock that you could just consider using HG 2e.
Now that's an idea I've never heard before!

It does, but admittedly just taking infantry weapons and making them big does look slightly silly. But then again if you have a giant metal man, why purposefully reinvent the wheel in terms of the weapons? Ultimately I think aesthetics edge it out for me in this regard. The giant SPAS-12 in AC6 looks weird to me.

I have a soft spot for it. Stuff like MechWarrior and Earthsiege were my first taste of mecha. Even if 'mechs are more mobile than they are depicted in MechWarrior. I still have the itch to put weapon arms on reverse joint, quad, and tank leg ACs sometimes. (I.E. when I'm not getting my ass kicked by other ravens)
