I feel like this edition has alot of objectively bad things about it and is absolutely where the alot of worst qualities of current editions showed up. But I feel like I prefer playing this edition compared to a lot of previous editions and 10th edition. Its a weird transitional period where there's still a lot of the old units that haven't been legended yet while still having the fucking Primaris lot. Its strange but I don't feel like I'm missing out on much staying on this edition and playing with friends casually instead of going back to playing the current edition.
I liked 8th edition because the few times I was able to have games I had fun. BUTI think the primary reason I was having fun was because the people I was playing games with are just good people to be around and thus we were genuinely enjoying each other's company and jokes over the rules we loosely obeyed as we rolled dice and moved minis around. So the quality of the wargaming rules did not matter. But with that said I think the wargaming rules are degrading with every edition because fewer people are remembering or able to learn or find out what makes wargaming rules fun to obey and easy to learn. And also GW being a victim of it's own success. There is also the problem of the life-cycles of rules being confined to a few years as everything must be updated and different from every edition which can smother motivation to learn rules as they'll be invalid with time. There will never be a definitive edition that will be genuinely fun and have a solid set of rules to the point where the only necessary updates are just balancing and new units added to rosters. Because execs demand change for profit and because the knowledge of making such rules is becoming less acquirable as time passes.
>>971861088th ed was pretty fun and I’d probably call it the last good edition.

>>97183989Yes, you are retarded.
This may be a stupid question, but can you run horror-centric games in systems that aren’t based on horror settings, like Dune, Conan the Barbarian, or The Lord of the Rings? As systems based on those settings, in my experience they tend to handle mechanics like sanity and mental breakdowns poorly.
>>97185814Not sure why sanity would be necessary for a horror RPG.Anyway, Conan 2d20 has the Resolve mechanic, Conan stories being in no small part horror. You (thankfully) don't become "mad" like in Coc, but you do get Traumas. You do become "mad" in The One Ring (another pretty scary IP, acually)... kinda, but the Shadow mechanic is a) not only caused by Dread and b) it's more of a thing that the GM calls on the players, making their rolls unfavoured and all.
>>97186165I primarily play World of Darkness, where sanity and mental or spiritual degradation are central themes. Because of that, I tend to think that sanity—or related concepts—is essential for a compelling horror experience, though I recognize that this is a somewhat narrow perspective.I know that Robert E. Howard was friends with Lovecraft, and enough elements of the Cthulhu Mythos appear in Howard’s stories that you could argue Conan exists in a sort of cosmic horror setting related to Cthulhu Mythos or Cthulhu Mythos itself. My knowledge of Lord of the Rings is more limited though, but from what I understand, the Shadow can corrupt someone to the point of turning them into a hollow, shallow version of themselves. There are also terrifying creatures, like the giant spiders, that seem descended from otherworldly evil. but this shadow corrupting influence ties back to World of Darkness’s focus on spiritual and mental degradation.

>>97182668Kill yourself slopfag
>>97183056>such a blunt video game outlookWhich is funny because usually video games do a decent job of explaining or evoking the feeling that "being an adventurer" is a legitimate job.
>>97182523I appreciate Arden Vul having a sprawling background for players to learn that principally comes from exploring the environment, stumbling upon all the contextual clues of events and the hidden books of lore and secrets
>>97182523Anybody else absolutely love non-dungeon dungeons? I'm genuinely obsessed. Not a single dungeon in my current campaign has actually been a "dungeon". at this point the only actual on-brand dungeons arent even gonna mechanically be dungeons.
How do you guys like this game? I’ve read a good chunck of the setting and there are some problems;> “Everything is fucked…except only the inner rim because the gay space communism in the rim is great”> consistent dark text on dark background > HEAVY crunchI’ve mitigated a bit by using the FATE system conversion and making the setting a bit more nuanced but outside of those the setting seems rather unique. And given it’s all basically free it’s a good deal even with the “in your face” nature of the politics. But what do you fa/tg/uys think?
>>97185462>Like in their society you won’t starve since the basic needs are met for freeAh no they would absolutely starve people to death, all it requires is being any ideology that isn't their own
>>97186187Based on everything said, I can't imagine it wouldn't be that easy. Especially if the people at the bottom of the social ladder get tons of extra "taxes" and shit that the populars don't, since nobody will give a shit what they have to say due to their social credit being so low.
>>97186209You mean just like reality? If I don't want to participate in the capitalist economy, I'll starve and be unable to pay bills. You seem to be getting worked up over the inherrent flaws in any form of currency; some people get it easy due to personality traits, some people struggle. Some people unfairly loose currency whilst those with currency find workarounds to never lose it. This already exists with capitalism. I'm not even a commie, but this is legit just how the world is, but in the Eclipse Phase version it's less obscure that the owners of the economy get preferential treatment.
>>97178268>Kobolds breaking up derelictsThat sounds fuckin awesome
>>97185711all you need to do to understand how that society works is imagine the worst of the most insane zealotry - witch burnings, reporting on neighbours, mass spying, shirking duties, general brazen incompetence. Nothing is anyone's fault, the few productive people taxed/enslaved into oblivion for the benefit of everyone who isn't productive, all authority is done through bureaucracy so nobody is culpable for any decisions, random people are ostracized/bullied as a means of social climbing, the nastiest peer group infightings humanly possible as cliques go to defcon 1 over the smallest slights and try to purge each otherIt would be an absolute shithole society to live in and would rapidly devolve into barbarism and despotism

>>97179141Based, keep us updated.
>>97177596The best games I discovered as a kid on the couple of old shovelware discs I found lying around were Mordor, early graphics Exile (now Avernum) 1 and 2, and Warpath97. I've been wanting to find another game like Mordor since - and have played a fair bit of the last one the guy made, Demise - but I've only really been able to be satisfied with a solo rpg amalgam
I got Riftbreakers 2e as a gift and I have to say, the combat is pretty damn fun. I have some gripes though and they have nothing to do with the system and lots with soloing it and the in game tables. So, hexcrawling is functional but the tables in the game eventually feel very repetitive. Same with the monsters. This and plenty of other mechanically heavy solo games often lack instructions and guidance on how to make your own content. How do you usually deal with this without breaking the system?
>>97183968My problem with Blackoath games is that they usually just have "You rolled a 1 through 5 in this table? You die, it's over. GG.". Across A Thousand Dead Worlds was full of shit. I haven't played 2e Riftbreakers yet.But to answer your question, the easiest way is to not look at any tables and just do what you roll. Then, if you rolled the same event twice and are getting sick of it, after you're done with it, alter it for the next time you roll it.For example, if it's the second time you rolled an event that had your weapons get magnetized into a ball at the center of the room and you had to fight unarmed and then grapple them out of the ball before leaving the area, then clearly this has happened enough times in your whole campaign by now.I'd now modify the event so that the next time you roll it, it's a room where swords are raining down.
Having said that, and speaking of Blackoath, I recently got Choir of Flesh. The setting is a bit too grimderp for me, so I'm probably gonna be making a few slight adjustments to make it just slightly less grim and more heroic (Turn my character into more of a special one or something), but I'm impressed with what I read of the core rules. I think this company is really improving with each iteration and I need to keep an eye on whatever it is they make next.
Dunk On 'Em Edition>What is Trench Crusade? An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.>What Trench Crusade is notTC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.>What's the QRD on the background? The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade.
