If Gaia made everything, including the Garou and the spirits, surely she would have thought to maybe allow them some free thinking in the eventual case that all her children murder each other and an uppity cunt she also created decided to get cursed and create cursed offspring which then cursed her own offspring to forever lose access to their ancestors and ancestral home? Surely Owl can make an exception or something, it's not like Garou are actually immortal.

Need some advice, I'm starting my very first campaign in a few days. The DM has played with a different group for a few years but all players have little to no experience.
I built my dude and am now wondering how much effort I should put into backstory and the flavor side of things. I made him pretty a pretty generic sword and shield fighter on purpose to keep things simple. How can I make sure that I can roleplay a consistent and somewhat interesting character, without having to come up with a novel worth of backstory
>>
>>97367290
jesus christ that's excessive
>>
>>97391289
The simple answer is to ask your DM. Some DMs like to use backstories, some prefer not to. A good DM will workshop it with you and it's pretty hard to get one that's outright rejected.

Since you asked here, my advice is that there is a space between a 20 page novel backstory and John Baldur Human Fighter.
I like to give a few bullet points on my characters' past, incident incident, and how they got to the starting location while also including a few named characters and a backstory hook or two.
Character consistency is less about the backstory, but sticking to several traits you want to give your character. However a backstory can give you some ideas of what traits to give your character.

If it isn't obvious, as a player, I like making backstories. One of my favorite parts of DnD.
>>
>>97391289
If you want to keep it super simple, try to come up with some goals of differing terms for your character that are achievable, are fun to pursue, and have consequences for failure.

>John Fighterman was always enraptured by tales of the legendary Sword of Giant Slaying
>John finds out that the sword is real, and that it was recently wielded by the famous Sir Knightley the Brave, who was lost in parts unknown
>John also hears rumors of an impending Giant invasion that threatens the buvolic village in which he grew up
>John decides to set out to find the sword and become a warrior worthy of the weapon so that he can defend his homeland
>long term goal: get the sword
>medium term goal: find out where Sir Knightley went
>short term goal: get money to fund this search and skills with the sword by clearing this cave full of goblins

Talk to your DM what these goals would look like and how they'd be integrated into the world he's building.

>Black Legion no longer hard into Chaos worship, Abaddon sees himself as not a slave and is disdainful of the religious
That's how it originally was. The BL gave sacrifice and worship to the gods only because they were fucked otherwise, but personally hated the position they were in. They routinely crossed the god they were previously making offering go to be in better graces with the god they needed to get cozy next. They were also the only legion to figure out how to get out of possession, even if it left the body warped and mutated. Basically, they were the minmaxers of Chaos.
>>
>>97387422
Word Bearers don't worship Chaos gods, they worship the Warp itself.
>>
>>97387179
The point is, they're all wrong and deluded. The gods exist whether you believe them or not. All of the rest is cope.
The real-life explanation is that actual religious fanatics would probably come off as really disturbing. Even the Word-Bearers are very transactional in their worship, they do it to get bennies.
If they were like Muslims, that would probably be too far even by grim, dark standards.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

I am tinkering about altering the initiative. individual initiative but it's split in this way
1. Declarations
2. Morale
3. Movement & Shooting (PCs and Monsters in order of initiative, draws at the same time)
4. Melee & Magic (PCs and Monsters in order of initiative, draws at the same time)

Some can do 3 and 4 in this way which is the only thing that gives me pause.

Agreeing with this guy. The first thing that comes to my mind is that people with experience in other games can get precious about their characters and it takes a bit of experience as a GM to get past that hump, especially as clones might not even survive the mission briefing if everything goes as it should. The second thing is that Paranoia missions can go off the rails very fast, not in the "this module is a railroad" sense, in the unexpected and chaotic sense so you'd have to be comfortable with the rules and improvising.

I did look at the rules. I'm allowed to.

Mentzer Basic D&D
Fuck the HYTNPD&D crowd and fuck the Moldvay is better/Mentzer isn't even D&D crowd.
Mentzer has one of the best tutorials for a RPG so you can pick it up fast. It's core is nearly identical to all other forms of D&D through to 1999 and once you learn one you can pick up the others and adapt freely. You don't have to worry about that mystery stuff , especially at lower levels if you want to just dungeon crawl that's fine. You can use it for years. It expands nicely into domain play at higher levels if you want. Just be careful it anyone wants to play thief. Thieves do advance in skills a bit slowly, Mentzer himself came up with a better way years later and it would be worth looking that up. Don't even look at the Immortal rules.

A Hochland rifle, or a group of dedicated handgunenrs, ought to be able to shoot this thing out of the sky. I don't care about balance or any of that garbage, this being a thing just does not make sense except as some kind of support unit for artillery in the way Bony used.

>>97391283
You'd be able to get a beautiful cannon shit if you got the opponent to veer their stack just right...

From my understanding WAAC-shit isn't as common in my area, but I'm still dreading the idea of having to go to tournaments. There's one held in the town next over that got sold out pretty quickly, so I'm hoping to snatch some players from that tourney for casual play if I can't find enough people to play with in my town or the other town next door. Living in a metropolitan region helps.

>>97391297
>tournamentfags will say "well its in the rules" instead of telling this asshole to take his models and get out of the tournament.
I think, as someone currently still looking into the tabletop tournament scene, this is also the fact that a lot of tourneygoers *and* non-GW organisers are socially awkward nerds that don't deal well with confrontation. Meanwhile WAAC-types in any sort of competition or game tend to be very dominant personalities (relatively speaking to the crowd atleast), so shit like this kind of rulebending, rulebreaking or genuine cheating don't get called out except for a few lone cases of actually socialised participants catching onto the cheating (who are probably also the least likely to know the rules by heart like the nerds).

GW just cares about money so I doubt 'official' organisers really care beyond gathering feedback for the guys at the top (especially after the failure of original Fantasy), and organisers might just be scared of getting into "trouble" with GW. That latter issue might be a genuine concern if TOW is going to have that points scoring system for official tournaments with the golden ticket crap and such.
>>
>>97391602
>I'm still dreading the idea of having to go to tournaments.
At the tournament I went to, there were a couple blatant waacfags, mostly a guy running a bunch of ushabti with bows, but overall, the 1.5 update made the game SO, SO, SO much better. I suppose it may vary by region but everyone who plays near me has been a good sport and not super tryhard.
And I've been winning with Lizardmen, which most tournament ranking says is one of the worst armies alongside Skaven. I think Lizards are only really bad if you try to take a Slann with them. Slann simply cannot be balanced at 2000 points and still be remotely as powerful as they're supposed to be in lore.
Also, it's fucking stupid that they can't sit in the middle of a unit of Temple Guard anymore.

It fucking sucks.
Long live V20.

Reasonable gentlemen.

It's a matter of opinion. There are a lot of gamers who are risk-averse and try to optimise the risk out of every scenario, which you simply can't do with Hunger. Every rouse check is a fifty-fifty, simple as. The only way to optimise the risk out of the Hunger is to minimise the number of rouse checks, in which case you're barely playing a vampire at all.

It's a mechanic that works best for people who are comfortable with risk and adapting to whatever the situation is and making a story out of it. As /tg/ has always been home to players who prefer tactical gaming and character optimisation, it makes sense that most people here dislike the Hunger system.
>>
>>97390564
I probably heard someone else say it, but it's an apt thing to say about the entire X of Darkness corona pretty broadly.
If you don't have to deal with any downsides to your splat, then you're just a guy with superpowers. If the player doesn't act like a vampire, isn't roleplaying like he's a vampire, no downsides, then yeah, the game is just about a bunch of superheroes. The vampire thing just becomes a vague aesthetic with no teeth, pun intended.

I yank gagglefucks of utterly unrelated morons together. These guys then usually coalesce into a team, but there's usually one or two who dip out from in-game or other disagreements, so I replace them with a new moron. I prefer new peeps because they bring new perspectives into things. After each series, some leave, and some stick around for future series. I've got a bunch of peeps now who are "regulars", from peeps I knew in college to veterans from multiple games, and they often help with mechanics, testing, and ideas. However, every new series is ALWAYS free-range clusterfuck recruitment with no favoritism. Just because I've known someone a long time doesn't mean they automatically get in.

The past few years though, since about 2022, it has been admittedly hard to find new players, since the entrenchment of what counts as "real" 40k has gotten REALLY bad, and the last two series were mostly my regulars.

>Dredging randos can work
Yeah, just gotta vet the group carefully and set clear expectations early on. My group of random joes has lasted for 101 sessions and counting. A few players came and went due to life getting in the way, but a consistent "core" group arose from the turnover. It's been a fun ride.

Seems I did get you confused. The guys not giving a shit about their world sounds like an issue with that specific group, good luck if you can fix wherever you're grabbing em from.

That could have been an issue with oldfags as well, as we see any time pre vs post rift shows up as a discussion in this thread.
