Previous thread: >>97111514GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.If you're wondering where to start:- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.Thread question: How often do you use an official GURPS setting? Which are your favorites?

How to represent realistic nerve strikes? The existing Pressure Points skill gets some of the effects; you can mess up a limb or stun someone for a few seconds and it usually takes a significant blow (i.e. 1+ HP of injury). 5d seconds is probably too generous. I'm pretty sure that you can't blind someone (optic nerve goes straight to the brain). Solar plexus might make you start suffocating, but is easily resisted with tensed muscles and doesn't last long.I don't think many nerve clusters can be reliably hit with normal levels of skill. Anatomy is messy and nerves are small, buried behind muscle, and prone to slipping around inside people, so there is always a chance of failure. On the other hand, sometimes people hit them accidentally. The most vulnerable one is probably the 'funny bone' behind the elbow, but its effects are minimal.
I want to write up a bunch of guns using Gun Stats, but (a) I don't want to re-do ones which have already been written up and (b) I don't really know enough about guns to name many obscure ones.Does anyone have a list of all the guns already published in 4th ed. supplements?Or any suggestions for cool guns?

>>97241675When I look at 4th and see the crazy lack of spells and few, if any, ways to customize your army, it just looks barren and boring.
>>97241898The main idea was to replace warcry with something that would sell more paints.
>>97241675>>97241717Galletian Champions warscroll standardizing combat ranges is a nice change, as well as fixing Look Out Sir. Combat ranges led to bullshit situations where base size did much more to determine the viability of a unit than it should have. Being on a 32mm with 1" combat range should not have been the massive liability that it was. Between that and having some kind of logical timing explicitly spelled out, 4e is better than 3e from a GHB perspective. Unfortunate that they changed every single warscroll to d3 mortals on a 2+.

Moloch's Fun Park Edition>What is Trench Crusade? An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.>What Trench Crusade is notTC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.>What's the QRD on the background? The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.>How do I get started? All the files are free online:https://www.trenchcrusade.com/rules/Comment too long. Wanted to talk about advice on GMing, settings you prefer, and styles or issues you as a GM have. I generally tend to prefer dark fantasy or sci-fi settings rather than trying something a little different. I also tend to have a style, depends on the system though, where i have a combat heavy session or two and then a more intrigue/exploration focused session. I have been working on how to better balance games I run, but trying to tie that to timing a game session gets tricky at times. Another issue I noticed is that puzzle solving or investigative games can be a lot harder for a player to get into the mindset for than the dm. It is easy to think everything you planned makes sense when you thought it out in your head but the players might not have the same line of thought.
>>97233945Not only was i clear about it, it was structured this way basically on their request.>>97236121I have one player who is playing an investigator, and has a built in "I'm stuck" mechanic. But he refuses to use it or gets frustrated when I just "give him the answer". Another player also did a few things to effectively put him in contact with a god-like entity with near omniscience, but he also only uses it if he's completely lost.I also do cut in as they're discussing something really wrong with something like "based on x, y, and z, your characters would not make that assumption but instead think something else" and they'll generally agree with this assessment.
>>97236294>I have one player who is playing an investigator, and has a built in "I'm stuck" mechanic. But he refuses to use it or gets frustrated when I just "give him the answer".*fanfare.wav* Congratulations, this situation is no longer your fault.
>>97218290That’s a really interesting style—I never even thought about that. I’ll have to try it sometime. I’m new to GMing, so I’m happy to take any tips.
>>97236294>Not only was i clear about it, it was structured this way basically on their request.Discuss with them why it's not working. Presumably what you're giving them isn't what they wanted, so either you misunderstood or they failed to describe it.
>>97236448OP here. The style thing is something I am trying to correct more so than anything else. While I leave thing open ended, I have noticed that the set ups tend to favor either combat or more thinking outside the box solutions. It tends to lean back and forth based on the game. As for advice I have learned:>Do not over plan your games. This can be bad and make you struggle if someone does something you do not expect.>This doesn't mean don't plan at least some possible solutions to an issue, but just keep an open mind.>Don't be dead set on certain events happening specifically at a certain location. Things can be moved around if needed and stuff ends up completely derailed.>If playing some pre-written adventure, you might have to adjust rewards to fit the party.>Actually map out and draw locations if it is important. Dungeons, combat arenas, etc. Some pots might not need it but even a basic map can be really useful. >Make encounters interesting. Some encounters might be basic, but it is a good idea to throw a curveball every once in a while. Spearman hiding behind shields or barricades, a lone caster buffing or healing enemies, etc.

>>97238800Well, that's how our Ref solved the problem of making CI distinct from the social skills.I agree on the main point, I don't think Roles should be balanced power-wise, but they should receive roughly equal attention from the devs and it's obvious they hadn't.Media's Credibility has miserably low numbers at first, but at least you can always use a high skill to gather actively Rumours.>>97234206Remember that you can use LUCK for the CI roll. This doesn't increase the scope of favours, but helps a low rank Rockerboy to ensure they get them.
>>97227867>Mike wouldn't stand for something like anti-grav in the game. They crossed that rubicon when edgerunners came out and revealed Arasaka's new mech suit had a gravity gun that could crush an entire platoon like a pancake.
>>97238800A starting level character having a 1 in 3 chance to get a major favor from an NPC seems like pretty good odds to me, dude, and as >>97239432 said, you can use luck to make it a sure thing.
>>97240830Always found it funny that Adam Smasher is a boogeyman because he targets basic level street punks when Arasaka has tech like this. And the body is supposed to go to Smasher, so Smasher will go back to unga bunga bullying babies again because he is a sore loser that cant get rid of his grudge of losing to a old coot with a stick.
>>97242019In my games I made Smasher the true boogeyman, all the stories of him jobbing are just fake copes and his stats are so bloated (beyond what the basic rules would allow) that he's basically "YOU FUCKING LOSE" statblock, unless the party's goal is to escape.

>>97241637Huh, I remembered the concept as way less interesting. Still not particularly interested in trying it, but for some reason I've not explored Friese designs in all my hobby time. Yes not even powergrid or fresh fish
>>97241592I see. Yeah that should very much be the approach. Sure, you can play it slightly more competitive whilst someone else just pushes levers to see what happens, but 10 minute minmax turns is nothing I want to see in our first game.
>>97241638I've always thought this was only a thing on the fringes of boardgaming; akin to a campfire horror story. But recently, others have begun to purchase more games and shit keeps happening>Anon before we set it up, do you know the rules?>Yeah I do, gotta have to look up some minutae but I'm good>Set it up, after 3 minutes of suttering we find out he doesn't know what half the actions do>End up watching a 30 minute rules videoThe boldness of bringing your game and not even knowing the fucking rules gets me. >>97241904If only it was the fringes, but I think some of the anons in here do sound like they have good groups and I'm happy for them. I just know that in my current city for instance, there are certain people constantly jumping into 'i want to play d&d' things that pop up on social media who I know are fucking terrible people and its like... you're a single mom to three kids from different dads, you're in a part time remote program at school to get free student loans when you get forgiveness, you're at home all day, learn fucking d&d yourself and stop trying to bum into games for the last 2 yearsI'm so exhausted by life that I just can't be bothered to drive a half hour after work to the board game cafe, hope to god the randos have basic social skills (most dont), realize i have had no fun for those 2 hours, drive a half hour home, go to bed
>>97241941I love boardgames. It's one of my few hobbies remaining after job and kids. But I don't think I'd bother if I didn't have my group(s) of regulars. Meant to post much earlier in the thread, but I suffered a Prometheus Virus outbreak and have only now rebuilt my base population to sufficient levels.Assuming anyone is still monitoring the thread, what are the best campaign premises to use when running an SMAC game, either in GURPS or some other system? Some of my ideas have been:>PCs are a probe team from a single faction or set of pact brothers, and the game plays out like a cyberpunk espionage thriller>PCs are division heads for their (possibly custom) faction, and must use social influence and connections to steer their faction or faction leader in the "correct" direction while also handling their official duties>goofy riff on the above using MAID(?!?), where PCs are vying for the affection of their faction leader>small-scale story about a group of terraformers in the early days after Planetfall, exploring this alien world, discovering its wonders, and trying to build a comfy homestead along the Pholus Ridge
