Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's first decade — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started.

Here's the timeline.

1974- OD&D published, Arneson joins TSR
1976- Arneson leaves TSR
1977-Basic Set is published, and Arneson discovers he's only getting 5% on the Basic D&D Rulebook which was sold separately, and not the rest of the Basic Set.
1979-Arneson sues TSR over this, with TSR arguing that Arneson should only get royalties from the rules he contributed to, and not for things like the In Search of the Unknown introductory module that came with the Basic set. Arneson argues that all D&D is built on his rules, he deserves a cut.
Arneson wins, and he gets royalties on all D&D works, including AD&D.
>>
>>96753227
>Arneson wins
Wasn't it a settlement?
>>
>>96753438
You're right. Sealed settlement, with Arneson getting royalties on AD&D and credit on all D&D products.

Aww, sorry kid, does the truth bomb that there would be no "the thread" because barely anyone in 2025 would be playing a 50 year old rpg unsupported for 40 years hurt your feelings?

Welcome to Warhammer Quest: Dark Water.
In this beer-and-pretzel adventure you control a handful of iconic heroes that wander the realm of Ghyran. This will be, for many casual players, their first taste the world of Age of Sigmar. Let's meet the poster boys.
...In particular, the guy in the helmet is the heavily armored tank that will be at the forefront in this introductory Age of Sigmar adventure, his name is Edmark Valoran, The Manticore Knight.

Now here's the question:

why is he not a Stormcast?
Is something changing at GW?

Cursed city had a fuck ton of production issues that really hampered the whole thing. Maybe they're trying to keep the box as 'simple' as possible, productionwise.

Some people are saying this is more like HeroQuest than WarhammerQuest. Im not really sure (its just 1 big room instead for hallways and many rooms), but i think we must wait and see.
Do you think they will change a lot of rules since Cursed City?

Tactical Feats
>a lot of them take several rounds to "set up" which already makes them worse than giga-power-attack one-shotting
>rely on a specific set of circumstances, including oftentimes giving up attacking
>usually the bonuses just aren't worth
>example: Einhander, you need to give up Power Attacking effectively, or two-weapon fighting, to get a +2 to AC you could have gotten from Two Weapon Defense, tumble ranks, and fighting defensively anyway.
>also Einhander: +2 on Tumble checks after you hit an enemy. Why are you doing that? Just hit him until he's dead. Or withdraw. If you need that measly +2 you're not a viable Tumble user anyway
>also Einhander: hit an enemy twice, and you get a free action feint attempt with sleight of hand.
None of these bonuses are very good, even taken together, and they don't synergize at all.
There's probably a better example for my initial point, but I don't want to clog up the post too much.

Ambush Feats
>gated behind specific levels of sneak attack, meaning certain levels, at which point a lot of such status conditions are less relevant
>also require you to give up ALL your sneak attack except 1d6, making them almost totally worthless
They're easier to fix by specifying you only give up 1d6 or maybe 2d6 of your sneak attack, for that condition.

I think we are in agreement on our sorrows of 3.X. We both see a lot of options that, while neat on paper, don't compete with the others. The power disparity of 3.X can very well be night & day, too.

What about Skill Tricks, though?
>>
>>96753540
I would not, no. I would specifically want a high degree of compatibility with the good stuff from 3.x and PF1. It would be a "What if PF1 had much better quality control and more carefully considered revisions, maybe also software style updates and bugfixes rather than paper + errata". Changing the whole math scaling would defeat the purpose.

>>96753557
>such as psionics and incarnum
No no those are more different class frameworks. I meant like:
Updating the base mass combat system (probably open mass combat by mongoose).
Ship to ship combat.
Elections.
Debates.
Trials.
A more fleshed out set of example builds and an update of the construction system of Strongholds & Dynasties, working in more magical options inspired by SBG.
Etc.

Stuff that expands the gameplay and does a good job of it.

Redone alchemy and herbalism could be good. And better considered spell level assignment rules maybe, and artifice (golem building), and the like as well. Theres the "occult lore" book by Lemmbridge that expands on this stuff a bit, but it's implementation leaves much to be desired too, and deep magic for PF1 is okay but incomplete.

But yeah. Lots of subsystems could use an overhaul.

Even magic items. Why is there no dice rolling involved? Why does every magic item built come out exactly how you wanted it? (I houserule that one in my homebrew d20 system). But mine is a bit of a bigger departure from 3.5 in tone and gameplay loop - for starters it's point based rather than class based, and lacks combat XP and WBL.

I imagine people would appreciate something that's a bit less of a dramatic change. And I'm always happy about more good 3.x material I can use in my own games.

>>96753802
Not even. Sunk cost fallacy is when you don't like something but you're too afraid of the coat to start over. 3.X has lots of content I like, just not everything. I'm looking for new 3.X d20 parts I like to mix in with my other 3.X d20 parts.

>>96753540
But to answer your question, I'm looking for improved compatible parts. Some people might want a whole system to run, but that's not me. You could use ORC, or CC, or some custom license. And then as you build more content you can reference stuff in the license you want. If you do use OGL, you could make OGL replacements for non OGL WotC stuff, but just reference OGL stuff from whomever directly.

You could, but I think their total defeat really takes the narrative oomph out of them being a triumphant democracy that overthrew the Empire. Which if any of us care about any sort of thematic weight for the series is a bummer.

But I think there's room here to tell a compelling story. The New Republic fails against a First Order blitzkrieg, but the First Order over-extends its resources and declares victory too early without fully taking over regions they've deemed tactically insignificant while their forces are preoccupied with chasing down the Resistance. With their capital destroyed and chain of command in tatters, one can see how they assumed the New Republic 'capitulated'. But the vast amount of territory involved means the New Republic is trading space for time, rearming themselves enough to have joined in for the Battle of Exegol.

You could make some compelling characters here out of war hero's that keep up the fight, and rallying remaining New Order worlds. Show that they didn't show up to reinforce the Resistance in Last Jedi not because they gave up on the fight, but they made a tough decision about not splitting their resources.

And before anyone wants to poo-poo on the idea of trying to do anything cool because the sequels NEED to suck, Filoni already did elements of this with Resistance, the best part of the Sequels era that nobody has watched.
>>96754203
What happens in the Aftermath Trilogy I'm unfamiliar with it.

I think Operation Cinder can be salvaged by just reframing it as an overzealous scorched earth campaign that was meant to deprive resources to the advancing Rebel forces- they just miscalculated how necessary a lot of that was, blowing up a lot of their own forces when they didn't have to. Rather than just straight up razing the foundations of their own territory that the Rebels weren't at risk of taking.
>>
>>96753344
by the Kobo preview, the speculation is only 6 of the 38 chapters are post-TRoS, and it's all immediate aftermath of Exegol stuff. I'd believe it's going to be a Finn or Jannah or Stormtrooper sequel era backstory, before it being something that genuinely add post-TRoS lore.
>>
>>96755096
Wait really? I was half tempted to buy the book just so I could see what Disney's plans are past the sequels but guess that's a bust

>What happens in the Aftermath Trilogy I'm unfamiliar with it.
Here is comparison of well written novel in EU vs Chuck Wendigo. Not mentioning that he changes the time perspective at random times.
It has Battle of Jakku, so basically the key event of post Endor, and seem to have origins of the First Order, but apparently lot of it is in comic form, so not sure how good or bad the comic could be.
And Operation Cinder was in it as Emperor's plan of destroying the Empire after his apparent death.
>But the vast amount of territory involved means the New Republic is trading space for time, rearming themselves enough to have joined in for the Battle of Exegol.
The competent writing would have made it true in TLJ, but instead it was mere hours after TFA and it was by that point firmly established that NR was demilitarised, and nobody believed for a second that Resistance could afford services of the rich arms producers who supposedly sold to "both sides". Then again, TLJ suffers from "Tell, don't show" which is the bane of good storytelling.

Also, just because something has cogs and steam doesn't make it steampunk. Steampunk is an aesthetic, same as dark academia; whereas cyberpunk or high fantasy are frameworks for storybuilding.

Huh. I'd figure steampunk has been developed enough at this point to be able to be it's own framework, like its cousin cyberpunk.

Fairly hot all around, though the game drops off slightly when it starts introducing monstergirls because you’re not getting enough time to really appreciate each character at that point. The ending is also just kind of nothing.

Owen's deck is confirmed for the obligatory Liberator support in BT24, and there just so happens to be a Dragonkin-type mega that plays a huge role in Time Stranger that will probably get a card. Additionally, although every level of Aegiomon's evo line besides Elecmon is a Shaman, I think there's a chance that the Aegiochusmon forms might have rule box type support, with Red likely being a Dragonkin. Mostly because there's only the one other Aegiomon card, which won't be enough to carry a proper Aegiomon deck.

But mostly, Owen's getting his direct support.

>Don't know how to properly reward nat20s
What system are you running? In My experience, there isn't really much of a need to "reward" lucky rolls like that anyway if it's something mundane like cracking a chest or forcing open a door.

>Hearing there's 7 bandits at the camp, barely surviving the first 4 and then deciding to take a long rest in the 7 beds before getting wiped by the remaining 3
I'm glad to know I'm not the only person this kind of thing has happened to. I don't think there's anything wrong with pointing out the flaws in this way of thinking, just as long as you aren't being a huge asshole about it y'know?

>Town guard refuses to budge on allowing the strangers into town with a tied up bandit
This makes sense. The guard has no evidence or reason to believe the bandit is guilty of anything. As far as he knows, these are just some thugs with a guy they assaulted and tied up. I think it'd make sense for the guard to want to be able to more accurately assess the situation.

Unless you're players are very reputable heroes, or there's a good-aligned champion/cleric in the party, pretty much nobody has any reason to trust or believe them in a situation like that.

Au contraire, the bandit was wearing the Local Lord's heraldry, looted off a slain guard. The guard, seeing this, did not let the players deliver the bandit to the church, assuming that as a man of the Local Lord it was his duty to enforce laws rather than strangers and the church.

>Dungeondraft and Texture Packs
Honestly? Or if you just want to print off an image, using Gimp and a grid template is fine. As far as professional maps, they are often behind expensive pay gates with a few free samples to sift through. If you can stomach it, doodle image searches might work for a bit.

What I'd really like to see is a good city map maker, a mix between Dungeondraft and Canvas of Kings would be perfect.

What makes a good convention game?

>What are your favorite games to run/play at conventions?
None. Convention games are always shit tier, because they have to cram a game in less than 180 minutes and they need to also promote some shitty new system that just came out in publisher's line-up
>What makes a good convention game?
Staying the fuck away from them makes good game. You can spend that time doing literally anything else.
Just fucking imagine how fucking loud it would be playing in that room, with entire space open, not separated by anything and with high ceiling.
>Any fun stories you'd like to share?
Not with TTRPGs, no. Board games are fun on cons, however, you will always find people ready to try something new without complaining about the length of game.

Hmm, how do I put this? Essentially, I meet and fuck sluts at ttrpg conventions.
If you ever why you don’t see an overabundance of decent gash at cons it’s because they’re in my room taking turns sucking my dick in between me pulling it out of their formerly tight, now gaped, assholes.
5E is unironically the easiest game to fall into at cons and then leave whenever you feel like. Better games merit playing at home with regular friends

>new discipline BS
Do not get me started on the Tzimisce and how they swapped Auspex for Dominate. Tzimisce are above such a pathetic discipline. If you want to break someone to your will then you torture the fuck out of them, scry their souls and use what you find to torment your captives until all that is left is an obedient husk.

feel like this all happened purely because of VTMB
and the funny/sad thing is Troika went out of business making that game

Got around to listening to the new HtP. You'd think with all the moaning about it in these threads that they had Fatigue recant his white heritage while flagellating and submitting himself to Filipino bulls. All that happened was he was forgiven his part in the expedition since he didn't know the full scope of it, and was told if he wants to be rid of the guilt and shame he felt because of the actions of his family he had to do good works and help those they harmed. It's a very basic WtA plot point, doing the honorable thing even when it's not the glorious thing. If someone killed your father, we can both agree the honorable thing is to seek vengeance/amends. But what if your father kills someone? What do you owe the victims? You can say you owe nothing, it just means you lack honor.
