Writing General: 'festive' editionWelcome to /wg/, the thread for all /tg/ related writing. Whether you're plotting your campaign, trying to come up with a character backstory, or just trying to write some setting fluff, this is the place to post it. You don't even have a campaign, just an idea you want to develop? You're welcome here. While the rest of /tg/ is arguing over monstergirl mating and which way rivers are supposed to flow, we're here to help you turn your thoughts into an actual finished product. As the successor to the Storythreads, we're also open to /tg/ related fanfiction (D&D, Warhammer, Battletech, whatever). In fact, if you've written any vaguely /tg/-related short stories, you can try them out here. You guys ever just rip off a video game, or a TV show in its entirety because your players are to normie to know the material?
>>97354883I ran a dark fantasy D&D group using mostly dark souls bosses and dungeons for that reason. Through my own spin on things of course, but the general premise of them stayed intact.
>>97354883>to normieHonestly you could lift plots wholesale from older media since the current generation is too young to know what it is. You could crib Columbo for murder mysteries, X-Files for weird one-off encounters of the week, Seinfeld or Frasier or a billion other sitcoms for background characters at a bar or restaurant.

I went on patrol with Boy Toy, long story short, we were attacked by the abomination, we were able to overpower it with gunfire and silver weapons, ultimately he had to bite the monster and drain it from behind. He kept shouting- no, howling at me to stake him, with his fangs out so I complied, I swear I saw Boy Toy move his eyes after being staked so I put a second stake in the right ventricle. He's in the back of the car, I have my blade right here if there are any surprises, I'm having speech to text send this message, I'm taking him home.I hate NYC so much.
>>97357278There are two ways this story ends:1) if he is just drunk on werewolf-(like) blood, he told you to stake him so he doesn't frenzy, we'll take care of it;2) if he Diablerized an abomination, I kill Boy Toy myself.

What do you guys even do when you world build? How do you decide what to work on? Like, if someone asked me a question about my setting, I could probably come up with an answer, but I can't imagine myself sitting down to "world build" abstractly without any goal in mind.
>>97356697Worldbound is a bottomless well. If you put yourself to it, it is a never-ending endeavour. It feels like work, it is work, but you risk to never stop world-building instead of coming with stuff as necessary. The best philosophy is of thinking with the iceberg analogy.
>>97356697>What do you guys even do when you world build? You can either start small and go big, start big and go small, go layer by layer, go forward in time from a beginning, or just dick around in a particular field like ecology or theology. Doesn't really hurt to have a backlog of ideas even if you don't use them all at once and it's generally fun to do if you can get into it.Also you can get sorta checklisty with it and then throw in some fluff on top after you've got a decent skeleton for a setting. Think of it like building a wiki for something that doesn't exist.
>>97332491There are several. They range in size from a large beach ball to a small moon depending on how intimidating they want to be, they can grow much larger if they want to kill everything in a given area, which is... surprisingly often. Suns range in personality from "if you do anything that angers me I will vaporize you before you realize you made a mistake" to "I will vaporize you just because the thought of life angers me that much". The closest thing to a friendly sun is Corona the Radiant Sun who has agreements with almost every major civilization to show up periodically and blast their farmlands with energy in exchange for being worshiped (suns don't feed on worship, Corona is just a massive narcissist, even by sun standards). On the other end of the spectrum there's Scorch the Merciless Sun whose hobby of nuking random villages was so unpopular that the three major kingdoms in its orbit put aside their differences and pooled their resources to try and kill it (they failed to kill Scorch but succeeded in banishing it through a hole in reality, it hasn't been seen since). In general if you're in my setting and you see a ball of fire hurtling through the sky in your general direction you should probably bow just to be safe. They're extremely petty.

>>97357555yeah again I'm not going to sit there for your epic own about how humans suck because you hate yourself to instead focus on the actual topic of the thread, which is>Should an elven wizard be more powerful on average than a human one?why should the elven one be any noticably better then a human one unless the elves are all autistically grinding the arcane process that is represented by increased spell slots instead of just enjoying their psuedo immortality and beautiful nature and all the other typical elf things elves do.in settings where the elves are, for a lack of a better word, more autistic about this kinda thing. they are literally always better then human casters in lore (because these also tend to be settings where the elves job to superior human male fighters/space marines/ect instead of 1v1 caster supremacy)

On the topic of swd6. One of my players wants power armor to help him switch his weapons to remove the action penalty for this specifically. Is this wise? Because if i give it to him they'll all want it i'm sure, but i'm not experienced enough with the rules to really see if this is going to be a problem. They generally seem to hate that -1D for this stuff, maybe they're just the dnd kind of crowd and need baby rules or something. I feel like a teacher trying to herd a bunch of babies somtimes.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help: >n00b DM's Guidehttps://pastebin.com/EVvt6P0B>n00b Player's Handbookhttps://pastebin.com/XALkXkV0 >Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128 >Need a starter dungeon? Fellas. I've taken anons advice. There'll be three challenging encounters, one easy fight and one patrol throughout the dungeon. But you see the small room at the top of the image? I am thinking of that room having a ladder up to a hatch right by the entrance of the dungeon - this being the lower level - to cut escaping players off. Is that a dickish thing to do? The players can break the ladder if they see it and connect the dots, but if they don't see it then they might wipe while trying to run away through the western stairway. Is that unfair?
>>97357375Welcome to the real /osrg/, Anon.>I am thinking of that room having a ladder up to a hatch right by the entrance of the dungeon - this being the lower level - to cut escaping players off.My main misgiving, if I understand correctly what you intend to do, is that I'm not sure it makes much sense for whoever inhabits the dungeon to have a ladder to cut off invaders who are inside and trying to escape. Generally speaking, the main goal of pretty much *anybody* with a home is to keep robbers from getting in, not to keep them from leaving. And, if anything, an extra ladder right by the entrance just makes the whole place more unsafe for the locals, so why would they leave a ladder there? In other words, it sounds like a gimmick. And gimmicks can feel like meta bullshit and unfair to players, whereas something that is justified by some sort of naturalism is more likely to be received with "ah, that makes perfect sense in hindsight".Of course, if there's extra information that you have omitted and makes it make sense, it might be better.
>>97357375cute map, anon. i didn't see your previous post but, couldn't that one go either way? that's an escape route for the players, or an opportunity to trap the MONSTERS down there?one of the first problems in Barrowmaze is that the (most likely) entrance has some previous adventurers' pulley system dropping into the dungeon, but some asshole has cut the rope. ez solution is to just attach some fresh rope. but a simple hole in the ground being the 'known' entrance creates a lot of opportunity for cleverness and dickery.
>>97357416I could post the whole lore, but basically, the people in the city above only believe that there's a few zombies down there. Instead, there's trapped, sapient, insane, scheming undead. They want to keep their existence a secret and to that purpose have dug out a shortcut to outmanouver anyone who might try to flee with knowledge of them.>>97357487>Some asshole has cut the ropeCue players about to leave, only to find that their own rope has been cut.

painted my first ever space marines. white was a hard choice and I probably went about it the worst way possible, but happy with how they came out. played them vs plague marines and it felt a lot more fun and balanced than my usual matchup with my buddy, Exaction vs Vespids. I wanna make space cops work but it just feels like an uphill battle compared to playing canoptek or even AoD.
>>97355851A tip for white is to not use white, instead aiming for a very light gray/off-white, so that you can then highlight with pure white. More usable as a tip I think is that painting the bases will probably help the models a lot. Currently they blend into the unpainted terrain and it makes the models look unfinished.
>>97355922>More usable as a tip I think is that painting the bases will probably help the models a lot. >>97355922>>97355942pretty easy fix. Noted for the future about grey-white progression. I learned a lot over the process. Would deffo airbrush grey to start next time, then white over top to get that gradient, leaving some room to edge highlight with the brightest white possible.

Might be a great way to get them in the paranoid "Innocence Proves Nothing" mindset of the inquisition.>>97352660So I've got ideas on how to let the villains show the more nobler aspects of themselves in the story but with consequences to each. The Khorne traitor guardsmen might spare civilians in places they conquer and actually offer chances for loyalist guards to surrender, which for the Inquisitor's retinue means they're gonna have to do purges of guys who were loyalist not too long ago or willing to surrender. For the Nurgle guy, maybe him and the Ecclesiarchy are both struggling over a pandemic and he "helpfully" tells the players that there are sick people trying to wash themselves in some "healing spring" that the Ecclesiarchy never bothers to clean and how he's worried its a vector for disease. Describe how it's all muck and slimy and the like (throwback to an anecdote Big E used in "The Last Church") and try to convince them to shut it down... only for it to turn out it really was a holy spring and by shutting it down the disease is ravaging even more people. With the Tzeentch guy, it might be that the planet he's on is a mess of political intrigue and Administratum bureaucracy. He helps them cut through red tape and backs them up against an entitled and obstinate nobility, only for it to turn out that he's using them to solidify his own power so he can finally institute the reforms he wanted. Finally for the Slaanesh guy I'm coming around to the idea of him maybe being a Griffith type that helps them throughout the story. There'll be a "fake out" Slaaneshi that's probably just a pirate while the real one is a Rogue Trader who'll probably wind up corrupted somehow, queue sacrificing his crew during a warp jump.
>>97356922>Might be a great way to get them in the paranoid "Innocence Proves Nothing" mindset of the inquisition.Seconding this. There's nothing that the inquisition likes more than someone taking a merciful or trusting option and getting instantly proven why the Inquisition does not do that shit. Very "constant vigilance!" type shit.
>>97335196As far as Jimmy Space was concerned, they were for the most part stopgap measures while he's priming his Perfect Rationalist Utopia What Don't Need No More Warp Travel N Shit to finally be ready. He was running a galactic conquest, and he was fine with anything that made that galactic conquest quicker and more efficient, because he alone could just change any of it later. None of it was intended to become calcified and continue for ten thousand years.
>>97339776It's mentioned in multiple places that Warp translation can hardly be done in a strong gravity well because going between dimensions while on one side your kilometers-long ship is being effected by the pull of a planet or a star may snap it in half, so I'd say either some sort of strong gravity generating device could dissuade and outright damage ships that try to enter or leave the Warp, or some equivalent of a Necron pylon or such that generates a null field could also act as a preventative measure. If you explain it with "xenos did it" or "archaeotech", anything can be plausible
