>>97401263Why are you called Revelation?
>>97401894Because I made this character with 666xp lolBecause House Venus picked that nickname for me!While it's true that I was born in the Netherlands from a Catholic man and a Protestant woman, and he owned an occult book too many, and there were lots of religious tensions, but thankfully no open warfare, the real reason is that in these nights I have something of a cult.Don't worry, it's nothing spooky, opposed to Via Humanitas or against the Traditions and authorities of the Camarilla. It's just a bigger version of what Venus in Furs calls her "staff." You see, mortals have this need to serve something greater than themselves, once I finally learned this desire is greater than me, I stopped fighting it.Initially I thought myself unworthy of such worship - I still do - but what made me change is seeing how this motivates a mortal to give it their all. They say: "When I'm working, I'm working at 100%. When I'm cleaning, I'm cleaning at 100%. When I'm resting, I'm resting at 100%."That eye-opening moment was my "Revelation."Sometimes young kindred approach me saying they want to join my cult, I find it flattering and endearing. At my age, a name is as good as any. It's not like I could bring supercentenarian documents to a voting booth.

I always look at a physical store for what I want before I go online, and (regardless of store type, from hardware to hunting to LGS) I am often left with going online if I want variety or to not be gouged by big brand exclusivity (and the big brands are all made in china at the same production line as the cheap stuff, the difference is the logo sticker)

has anyone given though to the state of mathematics in fantasy settings and how it affects the setting and characters in it? e.g.>tribes in not!Africa struggle with trade because they can't count past 2>how traders to calculation to determine prices, risk, etc>how well astronomers understand the motion of the heavens>how the characters think (i.e. logically, or numerically, or in a poetic / non-mathematical way)
>>97391889Second time in a week I hear someone in adult life still using multiplication tables. Seems like it happens more than I thought it would.Common core gets shit on a lot (and it should be, the textbooks I've seen are tragic and feel intentionally confusing) but the whole principle of making round numbers seems a lot more natural than just rote memorization of tables.
>>97378340I'm not knowledgeable enough in mathematics to be able to go into that, and I want them to eventually be able to communicate so I'm not willing to take things that far. Besides which, if humans have multiple views on logic and multiple contradictory mathematical axioms extant at the same time that we argue over, then I don't see why alien species wouldn't as well.Other than the prime number thing they only mathematical problem they have is one species counts using base-8 and the other base-12, but that's trivial to account for and, anyway, the point of comparing math notes at all was because math is a universal language that can help them get around the fact that, physiologically, they can't actually speak each others' languages. But 1 is 1, 2 is 2, 3 is 3, no matter how your mouth parts and vocal chords are arranged. So they started with that as a base and are attempting to build a translator with basic math serving as an intermediary, rather than directly trying to translate one language into another.
>>97367640>How characters thinkFor me, this is the most interesting one. There’s the obvious cultural differences you’d see, like people being able to count but not knowing any mathematical symbols, or even just the different number systems we’d be unused to (like the 12 x 5 base 60 system). Even more than that though, most people today get at least a basic education in maths and science, which even if they forget, will adjust the way they think to break down an issue and look at it logically step by step. What does an entire society look like without this training?
>>97394195NTA, 53x10x2, I assume? My math teacher focused on speedrunning the curriculum which didn't bother with topics like these. I still vividly remember telling my friend how to simplify or approximate and he thought it was dark magic
It's not really for a tabletop game, but I'm fiddling with a magic system for a fantasy story where astronomy is crucial for magic. The planet's four moons and their relative position in the sky determine what spells can be cast when. The moons' associations are fire, ice, stone, and life, and which of the zodiac constellations each moon is in affects how spells work. For example, if the Stone moon is in the constellation of The Defender, that makes it possible to cast a spell that calls a stone wall up out of the earth, while if the Stone moon is in The Scribe, that allows the spell that immediately impresses words into stone. This leads to mathematics for tracking and predicting the movement of the moons crucial, and since the moons' orbits are more elliptical than circular and they affect each others' movement, there's a lot of math required to predict these things.

>>97394717My character respects authority, but has no illusions about it: Authority is a Great Bear on a narrow path. The wolf steps aside, head low but eyes sharp, granting the beast its space. Anons, what would you say has been your experience playing DnD with a local group from discord or Reddit? I have never played before and I'm thinking about going along, just am unsure what to expect / the type of people I should expect.
>>97401679I found a group through reddit. Nice people mostly, been having a lot of fun. My first time playing dnd too
>>97401679reddit is fine, it's the big hub that everyone uses so you'll get a lot of people who barely even use reddit.
>>97401679I found a group with strangers on Reddit and the game is going great.Sadly life happened and I had to leave the game.
>>97401679>ust am unsure what to expect / the type of people I should expect. You can get good games but it's pointless to expect anything. Pretty much every flavour of person exists there, so you'll always have the chance of running into flakes, argumentative people, people with polar opposite playstyles, culture warriors etc. The best thing to do is get into a game or games and wait for the group to filter people out. In my experiences good groups usually form after people leave/are kicked from the initial selection and some others rotate through through until there's a line up everyone likes.

>>97390482Dude, I'm so sorry. I got so busy with Christmas that I forgot to comment. Ironic, considering the message of the story. I read everything in these threads and rarely say anything. Lurking is my vice. I just reread it.It legitimately made me choke up a little and stuck with me. Reading it again only drove it back home, I actually remember the climax really well. Messages and stories about gratitude and the soppy stuff really stick with me. This was a particularly well-done version. A belated merry Christmas. May we all keep the season with us throughout the year.If you're looking for any issues, I don't know if I can dredge anything up really. The long beginning really just drove the ending home even harder.
Lads, I hate the editing phase.
Hello, I have a question (or two) that I hope you will answer.I want you to imagine you're in a library in a strange town. You're currently stuck here because your car is being worked on. The repairs are indefinite; you could be here for hours. So you take a book from a shelf and sit down to read:crownwhill.substack.com/p/pilotMy question is this: at what point did you decide to stop reading and reach for a different book? More importantly, what about that point convinced you that you didn't want to read anymore? That's it. No need to wrack your brain for any complex reasoning. No need to comb through the text with an editor's eye. Just read it for pleasure, and when you find you don't want to read anymore, a simple 'I stopped at X because of Y' will do.Thank you very much in advance, and don't let the picture color your expectations of the story. It's just an eye-catcher.
I want to start some sort of writing project, I think about it all day but I can't get myself to sit down and do it. As a result, the details are nebulous and I can't make up my mind about anything. I think it's because of unmedicated ADHD, do you guys have any suggestions aside from getting medicated (not an option)?
>>97401363Decide that there will be a specific time on a specific day when you will do writing stuff.Develop some kind of ritual and habit, and do it every time before writing.Decide on what you will be writing today BEFORE the session starts. Write this down. It can be notes, a small list, or just some random ideas. You shouldn't have to think what you want to write before writing.Get rid of as many distractions as possible.Even if you manage to focus only for a couple of minutes, it's important to keep doing this. Ideally every day.

>>97394682How do you define quick to resolve? Is 1d20 + Mod vs. Target AC quick and without unnecessary maths for example? And meaningful choice would be describing your character's action in the moment of roleplay, so I always assumed when roleplaying that there is meaningful choice at all times. Unless you are playing some weird anti game with a list of 'moves' or prescribed 'actions.' All in all it seems very feasible to accomplish with minimal game design effort.
>>97398683>Is 1d20 + Mod vs. Target AC quick and without unnecessary maths for example? The individual roll is quick to resolve. You could make all of combat roll 1d20+mod if you beat the target you win the fight, or you could make it so you're making dozens of attacks in a game designed to make you miss half the time and deal 2 damage on hit vs 200 hp. >And meaningful choice would be describing your character's action in the moment of roleplay, sThe choice is what action you're choosing to do, not how you describe it. If >I move behind him and aim for his head using my hiltand>I attack him head on, hoping to slice his chest open with my bladehave actual mechanical differences in how they're resolved and/or what they do on a hit, and both are at least somewhat reasonable options (ie worth doing with pros + cons) there's a meaningful choice. If both are actually the exact same action with the exact same effects but with different dressing you don't really have a choice. If attacking with your hilt inflicts a -10 hit penalty, deals -5 damage, and has a chance to make you drop your weapon on failure then you would never actually choose so the choice isn't meaningful. In narrative games these could be very, very different actions with the exact same resolution, but that relies on GMs personally ajudicating the outcome of every action which some don't consider a real choice for the player (I'm fine with it, personally). You can also add crunch but create no meaningful options. In some games there'll be elaborate rules for doing stunts, attempting unconvential actions, performing maneuvers, etc. But if they all have really high DCs or are too complex or provide no real advantage over saying "I attack again" no one's ever going to use them.
>>97283892My physical copies of Primrose arrived today and by Wednesday they'll all be off to their new homes. Had to deal with some tariff bullshit at the post office since Im Australia based but otherwise most of my sales are locals who are coming around to hang out and pick up a copy at a meet and greet. Having a lot of people enthusiastic about my game has been quite jarring since the game has always been only been known by my small local group. I ended up ordering about 12 copies and sold out, but theres already quite a few people who have been interested in a second run. I figured id write them all a thank you letter and finish it off with a wax seal as a show of gratitude too. Kinda weird being at the end of the road in all honesty.
>>97386873I think I mentioned this in a previous thread to the Disturbia anon, but I think "Active Abilities" on cards is the way to go, so you have an incentive for not using your successes to cancel the opponents successes/deal damage that resolves before the damage occurs. So something like "Spend 2 Successes: Give all allied units 1 free success for the rest of this turn," so you're trading damage in one situation for different bonus. Sure, you then risk this unit being killed or maybe not securing the objective it is targeting, but it could give you an edge somewhere else more important.
>>97402175While the new cover looks nice, I must admit I am fonder of the original cover. It felt like a dusty told time you'd find in an abbey library. If the game is becomes a huge hit, maybe you could make the old a collector's edition version.
The Paladin has been POISONED! He will instantly die with no antidote. A Thief holds out the antidote and pours it all on the floor. 'Drink if you wanna live.'The Paladin gets on his knees and licks the floor. He's feeling better already. But when he tries to kill the Thief, he finds out he has fallen. Remember it well.In Japan, there was once a poisoned Samurai in a similar situation. A Ninja poured the antidote on the floor. Do you know what the Samurai did?
