Previous Thread: >>96962908

The thread to talk about Super Heroes/Villains/Spies/Agents/Rogues be it in spandex or not.

Popular Choices for Games:

>Mutants & Masterminds
Currently the most played one, uses a d20 resolution for everything, has powers building and rules for tactical combat.

>Marvel TSR/ FASERIP
Classic Supers game from the 80s, still has a lot of fans and various retro-clones. Uses a d100 with an universal resolution table to decide the degree of success, has random character generation and abstract rules for powers and combat.

>Masks (PbtA)

>what’s the in-setting lore for how people get powers in your preferred/original supers settings?
I prefer the idea that anyone can be a super, it's just a random chance of luck via mutation or you go out and acquire the mutation by putting yourself in a risky exposure.

I also subscribe to escalating power. So no one is just naturally OP, if you never use your power and grind it with creativity, you will never be at the top.

Question of the Thread:
Should mecha have hands? Should the hands be humanlike? If they shouldn't have hands, what should they have? If no hands, why even have arms?

Suggesting an additional TQ for next thread:

"How do you do Ace Customs? Are there any? Do they have improved performance, or are the exact same as other mechs with a different finish?"

MECTech is my system for mech-based combat.

Link to the rules that I'm about 80-90% finished with.

Why make an entire thread?
>Have enough content and questions to warrant it
>Hope to get enough criticism/feedback to gain the inspiration to finish it within the next day or so
>Main goal is just to talk about design philosophy with people
>The board is slow

Feel free to participate with questions or additions to any element of my system, or answers to questions that I ask. If you have your own design questions for TTRPGs, I'd be happy to give my 2 cents as well.

First topic presented for review will be my take on general actions and action economy which I think is moderately unique

To illustrate the differences between quest grades, I made a quest line.

ADAM AND SONS: INFANCY Rank-D
>group of engineers are developing autonomous mechs and hire the party to fight them in a controlled environment
>scientists pay for any ammunition spent or damages suffered by the party’s mechs and only request that no explosives be used
>Battlefield is an arena with scattered pillars for cover similar to a paintball field
>autonomous mechs are equal in number to the players

AUTONOMOUS MECH STATS AND EQUIPMENT
Malt Coyote models(as in, Coyote core with Malt frame)
>HP: 52(extremely high HP, double the average)
>Damage avoidance: 9(one of the lowest, compared to 11 being around average)
>Head model is ‘Steam whistle Skull’. Leg model is ‘bare hydraulics’. Both arm models are ‘exposed arms’
>all parts are the cheap, more fragile, weaker versions of the standard parts
>no back part

ADAM AND SONS: CHILDHOOD Rank-C
>party is hired to launch an assault on an illegal warehouse operation
>client also hired a second team to engage in a pincher attack

>warehouse protected by long range snipers making approach difficult, dangerous and slow
>turrets have high physical armor, enemy mechs have strong energy shields
>sniper defenses are reduced drastically after 2 turns as the other unit begins their attack on the opposite side of the warehouse and splits their focus

Part 2 of combat
>once inside, more powerful mechs attack the party and join battle one at a time
>last few enemy mechs are using melee weapons and side arms because their ammunition was used up on the other unit
>other unit joins the battle and performs long range support, revealing that the unit is the autonomous mechs from before, now with slightly upgraded mechs

ADAM AND SONS: ADOLESCENCE B-rank
>the party is hired as protection by a CEO who is attending a massive business meeting
>all CEOs in attendance believe all other CEOs are trying to kill them for business reasons
>some event kicks it all off and the party needs to escort their CEO out of the city to safety
>all enemy mechs have at least standard grade(C) equipment

Combat part 2
>party leads CEO to a bridge that leads to safety
>autonomous mechs appear at the same time and won’t accept another party of mechs to go on the bridge before them or follow them after
>autonomous mechs are now designed and equipped to mirror the party and their tactics and have the advantage just from the party already having fought
>>
Merry Christmas anon
>>
>>97246790
ADAM AND SONS: SUCCESSION Rank-S

>party gets a tip that a convoy is transporting and S-rank piece of gear and they could take it
>turns out it was a setup and someone is using the autonomous mechs to ambush and kill them
>autonomous mechs are now equipped specifically to counter the party and the details of the mission is mostly detailing what counters what to encourage the DM to design an impossible challenge
>party still gets the s-rank part if they manage to win

I think you could chalk that one up to surprise if you wanted to. I mean, if you had been in their shoes, would you have expected the mild-mannered Chancellor from Naboo to react to your arrest attempt with a banshee wail and a 720 corkscrew jump in your direction?

Would KOTOR-era armies be a good addition to Legion?

Being honest, I just want it for a customizable Revan kit with "Savior. Conqueror. Hero. Villain." written in the little subtitle field on the datasheet.

You could definitely get enough heroes for enough operatives and commanders.

However, kotor games don't really feature anything heavier than some basic skimmers/heavy infantry. These armies would be severely lacking in any sort of vehicles.

You could probably get a coherent old republic/sith Empire faction if you splashed KOTOR and SWTOR together though.

Either way, one problem remains - these make 0 sense to be fighting against the OT/PT era factions.

The fail condition of feeblemind is brutal. it's as if you blinded a martial and gave him enfeebled and clumsy 4 on top of it.
>>
>>97247847
Never Mind on the healer is hilarious. You force the party to witness several back to back attempts (which can last days) of Break Curse/Cleanse Affliction with a -4 on top of the check on a Failure. Very interactive, fun gameplay. 10/10 design.

Or just force retire the character if you have no settlement of the relevant level nearby on a Crit Fail.

>>97248065
And the "check" to get rid of it was on one of the affected stats.

Imagine if Enfeebled and Clumsy reduction were behind an Athletics/Acrobatics check respectively. With a previous 45% failure chance flat check before you can actually ROLL for the check.

On the spectrum of rubber forehead aliens to complete starfish aliens that are made out of silica and breathe methane, where are YOU specificially comfortable with. Does there come a point where an alien becomes too weird for you to "relate" to in order to include them in your games as playable races?

Personally I am fond of aliens that look plausibly like they could have evolved in a different world and have no distinguishable lineage to earth life, even if they share some superficial features.

>>
>>97240164
I've seen so many pseuds insist that intelligent aliens MUST be humanoid because of convergent evolution, that the human body is simply the most efficient means for an intelligent tool user to exist, and I disagree so heavily with this.
Once a creature is intelligent enough to come up with abstract concepts and ideas, and has appendages dexterous enough to craft and make them, it can simply invent and create tools that can circumvent its physiological shortcomings. You don't need much more than that, a large brain and the appendages that can bring its ideas to life.

I mean it's not like the human body doesn't have its own list of problems we've invented our ways around. An alien with the same train of thought might look at a human and go "how can a predator with no fangs or claws possibly acquire the caloric intake needed to feed such a large brain?"
the answer is they make their own with sharp rocks. simple as.

Meanwhile, Ordem Paranormal, a Brazilian RPG with its own 3D VTT and system, a map of a huge modeled region, animated characters on the VTT, cinematics for big moments like deaths and bosses, and at the end of the season, everyone cosplays as the characters.
Critical Role is just lazy. Once you realize that, you notice how sloppy their production is for the "biggest" RPG table.

Moloch's Fun Park Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

Bring a trench cleric, no reason not to. Both shocktroopers should have grenades or an assault gun. The whole system with shocktrooper fire teams involves you setting up blood markers with assault weapons, charging in and triggering a 3 dice bloodbath.

NA has a lot of trap options. They are not actually a gunline faction. They are a tactical faction that plays with activations and uses fireteams to eliminate threats in one go. They are very fragile (even an MHI can die to a single lucky shot due to no tough).
>>
>>97250350
I really enjoy their lore, but perhaps is there another army I should look into and also consider making a Warband of? I am new, so I'm trying to ease myself in.
>>
>>97250369
There's no reason you can't play NA as a new player, I did. The faction just works in practice differently than people imagine in their head/think from seeing the models/options.

And at the end of the day you should just play what looks cool/you like. This game is very swingy and much more narrative focused than a lot of other modern games.
>>
>>97250388
>>97250388
Oh no, all of the models are great. I am very content. I just want to make sure I'm not picking a too complex army to really get into the game.
>>
>>97250417
You could look at playing Prussia.
You bring lots of lightly armed (generally just clubs and grenades) shocktroopers. You get an extra fireteam, 12" range grenades, and +dice on dashing (helps you cover more ground) in exchange for no heavy weapons on shocktroops, and only being allowed 1 sniper priest and MHI (most people only take 1 of those anyway, so not really a loss).
They also have official plastic models if that interests you.

Trench Pilgrims and Heretic Legion are the commonly recommended newbie factions. Pilgrims are very hardy (3 tough models compared to NA's 1) and are melee focused, but have decent budget guns.

HL is one of the shooting focused factions, but they also have 2 ready built melee models (assault wolves and death commandos) so they can still run a few models in.

I have wanted to play RPGs for years and posted on /tg/ for like a decade, but have never found someone to play with. Finally my kids are old enough to play with me, but the problem is, I don't know HOW to play. Like, what is a game supposed to even look like?
All the rulebooks I've read go over in depth the character creation and mechanics, etc. but none really paint a picture of the structure and flow of the game and what it is supposed to look like.

Where do I start??

The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, SAGA, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void,
Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

I’ve read two of hers - empusion and drive your plough over the bones of the dead
Both were really cool

No tg related presents this year except my wife and I gifted each other the lotr cooperative card game, looking forward to try it out

I watched the stage adaptation for empusion, it was a bit too artsy to me, but the extreme misogyny and supernatural elements reminded me of From Hell, a comic that I really enjoyed. I got books of Jacob and drive your plough over the bones of the dead.

I know she is an odious shitlib, but I am willing to give her books a shot. I'm not polish and my favourite polish author is still Sienkiewicz, loved The Trilogy.

I mostly read old books, currently going through the world history series written by Carl Grimberg. I think the last time I read a book written by a woman was when I read Savitri Devi. Man she was crazy.
