How are we feeling about the new 5.5e Artillerist in Forge of the Artificer?

I have been seeing one in play. It has been highly effective due to one key change: the Eldritch Cannon not being locked to one "mode" during creation. The same Eldritch Cannon can be used to spam temporary Hit Points before combat (just keep rolling again and again until the whole party has 8 + Intelligence modifier temporary Hit Points) and then use either Flamethrower or Force Ballista during the fight itself.

The Artillerist still has no Extra Attack at level 5, but cantrips can help it catch up... somewhat.

Absolutely not, I've already danced this dance before.
I've already DMed this campaign (and this setting) for another group, and I'm deeply unsatisfied with a lot of the elements of both the story and worldbuilding. And the problems with the story come from me not having things planned out properly from the start.
Some plot points emerged from nowhere, others disappeared into the nothingness after being established. NPCs and plotlines I've intended to be important fizzled out because I've created them and then didn't have any idea what to do with them next. The stories that we did end up doing didn't have any foreshadowing. The final dungeon of the arc started with the premise "Go to this place you've never heard about before, because the BBEG's master plan is unfolding there - thus speak I, the hastily slapped together exposition device".
Looking back, act 1 and act 3 were very solid, because I've had an idea of what to do with them right from the start, but act 2 is rancid garbage that makes me want to vomit, and it's the one where I just did stuff.

No more trying to improv the entire middle of the campaign.

So I have this idea in mind for a tiered environment that focuses on the center being the massive crater where the corpse of a farplanar entity fell and the surrounding areas up to a point are affected by the corpse's proximity.

What would be some good ways to represent the environment becoming more and more affected the closer the PCs get to it?

Had a deep romance between the adept lead acolyte and a scum recruit he initially picked up on Iocanthos when we were running the starter adventure in the core rules. She started as an obscura addict and he just hired her. The adept character ended up saving her during the final fight and the relationship bloomed in character from there. We were a group of all dudes so it was purely an "awww bless em" between the group. Had an assassin, a psyker and me GM. They both ended up dying later but ya know, dark heresy and all that.
>>
Why do the other departments trust the Ministorum to produce important individuals via the Schola Progenium? Shouldn't they be worried that these people who are often given a lot of power would be loyal to the Ecclesiarchy first, and their new department second? Every source goes to lengths to make it clear that the Imperium isn't one big happy family, so why are the Progena the exception?

This is why I like that Dark Heresy Genesys homebrew myself. You don't have as much crunch, but there's still a fair bit of weight to things. Genesys encumbrance I always felt struck a good balance between "number crunch" and "narrative".

Rolled a dread wraith from PF1 as a random encounter for a night time mission PCs are planning to take.
Trying to decide how start it off and how to fight
>Option 1
Wraith is smart: hides in the ground on the road, uses life sense to do spring attack as they get in range and hides back into the ground.
Keeps doing that, targets them one by one and PCs can only fight back with readied actions
>Option 2
Wraith is smart and bloodthirsty: like 1 except rather than hide it flies up above the group, uses its Sense Motive 23 and Spot 23 to id the weakest members of the group and than proceeds to spring attack going for the weakest, trying to generate more spawn
>Option 3
Wraith is confident and doesn't bother hiding in ambush because its the scariest thing in the area and it got no one to hide from and none can outrun it, so it hunts in the open. Comes at them fast, does spring attack from the air.
>Option 4
wraith is cocky, like 3 except it doesn't try go for the weakest first, goes at random to spread the misery around
>Option 5
wraith is confident but lazy, like 3 but goes after mounts first because it doesn't want the party to try and separate and run
>option 6
wraith is playful, like 1, only pick targets randomly each time

>earth is canon in D&D and you can't level up here

Where are you getting this from? Honestly curious.
>>
>>97287765
nta, but the core difference in leveling up in d&d vs real life is permanence. In d&d the skills and attributes you get at level up are permanent and stay with you even if you never use them again.
in real life everything degrades rather quickly and its a constant race to keep up which everyone loses with old age.
>>
>>97287636
Option 3 would feel the most "fair" to the players, with option 1 being a good step up in difficulty if it feels the need to step up it's game. The issue would mostly be trying to out-damage it before the CON loss does the party in, 184hp with incorporeal defenses is quite a lot to blast through, and once one guy is down it's a wipe
>should an incorporeal ghost be prevented from passing through tightly packed living people like that?
RAW, Creatures are not Objects, and as such incorporeal creatures do not get a free pass to pass through them. Of course there's several hundred years of fiction depicting such an occurrence, so YMMV
>>
what is the usual rule if you need to do two things at once that would each require a skill check? do you add the DCs, simply resolve them sequentially or, use largest and add some portion of the other?
this is in regards to that possibility of protecting a group with a tight blade barrier from a large flier >>97287636
>DC 20 to Turn 180° by spending 10 feet of movement
> DC20 to Fly up at a greater than 45° angle
If I am imagining how it would work out if one did a dive attack at a tight cylinder, I think the wraith would need to do both of those to regain altitude
I am wondering if that should be a DC 40 combined maneuver with a chance to clip the barrier on fail by more than 5.

It's extra fucked up because early explorers really did encounter some of the most ridiculous culture shock and some peoples are genuinely completely alien and bizarre to us and they basically just don't want you to admit that.

If they wear a suit and a tie and get on a boat to your country, they become you, so they have to be very very normal. Even if they speak in clicks, don't comprehend personal property, mutilate their women and eat their elderly, it's all tabula rasa and their kids can go to your school and become just like you immediately. They need to believe this.

I'm trying to make a JITE build mostly for Liren to have a character to interact with who's just as new as him since I did say I'd try to pick it up again with him.
That's kind of it.
>>
>>97288024
I'd say, maybe go for someone that's a complete opposite, but with similar goals to him so that they work together, but there's a dynamic between the two? I know this sounds like very unspecific advice, but that's a good start, I'd say
>>
>>97288013
Competent chuuni is a fun idea. Not sure which competency to focus on though. It could be more of a social focused character so that Liren doesn't have to break in all the time, and that there's always a lead to follow based on the character's connection. At the same time, someone competent in athletics and fighting in the real world is also a nice contrast to have, especially if they can save Liren from trouble in the real world, while Liren can save their ass when it comes to anything supernatural.
>>97288044
We did kind of fall into having opposites in a way. Liren being a more serious mastermind more connected to the supernatural, while whatever this character is being more of a happy-go-lucky person interested in the supernatural but having no luck with it. Someone who can push Liren into more slice of life, or non-serious mysteries. How else can we push for more of a dynamic between them?

I do want to know more about the current state of affairs seeing as you've been part of the MP.
>>
Chuuni... DE... kino...
>>
>>97288100
>current state of affairs
Well, I'd say there's kind of a rising action period right now. A bunch of really big things happened back to back, but things seem to be building towards several big payoffs:

>the first coordinated Humanity Lost Alliance attack
>Kohaku and a few others working with the feds
>Fushihara and the Death Marks mission
>Kiro no Kawa becoming more active (ongoing)
>Several characters coming together to find and take down the Nightmare created after Nobuhiro Kirigawa, Marisa's dad (she's an NPC, but the characters are still relevant) was attacked by a Nightmare Eater (Spamton/Boss Nightmare mission)
>Fujiwara Senki getting stronger and Momofuku becoming a cultivator

And, if you ask me from my own character's standpoint, if I can crank out one more writefag, Kaoru's just on the cusp of telling the Student Council the truth about her being Scarlet Senshi.

There's a lot of moving pieces, honestly. There's also somewhat more minor stuff happening, but everyone's got something going on. Take your pick, or start something new, it's all cool

tell me you're not an educated young science fiction enthusiast in the early 20th century without telling me
>>

First of all, Conan IS scared of the supernatural. I don't mean the usual "barbarian healthy hate for sorcery", even: he IS scared of monsters. He doesn't faint, mind you.

Which is interesting because he's not terribly different from the reactions that many HPL protags have. Armitage and Willet come to mind. And both guys fight pretty high-level monsters and win, taking the usual RPG metrics. Certainly "higher level" than what Conan kills.

>>97288026

True. Kull is more prone to introspection than fucking Elric, all considered.
>>
>>97288129
The problem with this topic is that people hear "Lovecraft" and think of Derlethian Heresy pastiches, not the work by the actual man. There are some of his characters who go stark raving mad or kill themselves, but they're a minority, and the latter usually do it to escape far worse enemies (or their "suicide" was anything but).
>>
>>97288135

Hell, I'm not so sure Derleth's protags overall are even worse in this regard.

(Lovecraft used more cheap-ish fanting eariler in his writings, didn't he? Still less than his usual "everything ends up with a sort of eldritch explosion" thing)

Anyone play it yet? I like the "rustic fantasy" setting. The core rules seem interesting, it has more mechanics and gameplay than most other narrative games. I enjoy that it doesn't have moves or whatever to confine you, you can actually play your character and do whatever you want. It's got enough knobs and options in terms of resolution I feel like it's actually a real game despite having that more story focus vs simulation focus. And I like that the DM has all the traditional power of the DM and there's not like "Fate Points" or something else that gives players control to change stuff.
Thinking I might try a short game for my table, just a few lower powered sessions. It also has good tools for a solo stuff which is interesting.

>the shill accusations and the paranoia that comes with it are still worse for board quality.
Learn to discuss things like someone who isn't trying to advertise a product, then. Shill accusations are harmless and easily countered or ignored. Acting like a huge faggot because people are rightfully wary of shills only casts more doubt.

Nah, it means it's fantasy Appalachia. Moonshine, sisterfucking, and endemic cannibalism mixed with all kinds of fucked-up cryptids.

Rustic means following bilbo and Sam instead of legolas and gimli.
Rustic means the first part of a jrpg before it's revealed that God gets involved with the plot.
Rustic fantasy is the princess bride.

The Pro is somewhat better but fuck paying for this shit, I just need comprehensible reference images. Sometimes the Pro does think in troll logic though from what little I have tried, it will just make pic rel and not even apologize
