>>97244827Listen anon, when creating a form of media, an important part of the design process is considering the target audience. While different audiences respond to and empathise with different experiences, they identify most with things they have had personal experience in. Gamers will, generally speaking, like films about games more than the average jock. Now tie this in with the fact that humans are one species, and despite our many offshoots we all share universal behavioural patterns, like the feeling of being a higher rank than another, and racial experiences, such as admiring a female butt, or the joy of parenthood. Such experiences are unique to each species, and so to stray too far from the human experience and into the unknown is to destroy your audience's ability to connect to the media piece.

I would like to talk about the Chronicles of Darkness game line Deviant: The Renegades, or more specifically, one major upcoming supplement. Deviant was released in late 2021, and has had three additional sourcebooks since then. A new supplement, Black Vans, has been in playtesting for a while, and is currently being previewed.I am not being paid or sponsored to promote this book in any way. I am just very fascinated by it, and indeed, I already ran a mini-campaign using the playtest material.Deviant is, by default, a game about playing angsty, scarred superheroes who either fight world-manipulating conspiracies or work for them. Black Vans is a toolkit full of variant rules, quick NPC creation, variant character types, and variant genres. These variants range from the minor to the dramatic, completely overhauling what were once non-negotiable, foundational themes and mechanics. Maybe your character is not angsty or scarred at all, perhaps they are a """""regular human""""" like John Wick or Batman, or the campaign might have nothing to do with world-manipulating conspiracies. These variant genres include cyberpunk, high fantasy, post-apocalypse, space opera, and superhero emergence. This is a beefy supplement. For example, one chapter alone dedicates 38,000+ words to playing other monsters of the Chronicles of Darkness: Beasts, changelings, demons, Sin-Eaters, hunters (entirely separate from the variant rules for """natural""" superpowers), mages, mummies, Prometheans, vampires, and werewolves. No additional supplements beyond Deviant are necessary; the rules are self-contained, allowing the group to play a monster mash of an urban fantasy setting without needing a daunting 7+ books. And yes, they are supposed to be balanced against one another, so a vampire in the same group as a full-fledged mage is probably some older Kindred.(Continued.)
Thanks for the thread, I told my usual ST about it but I'm also interested in maybe running it myself.
>>97249036You have a lot of material to work with. Are you interested in running a vanilla Renegades game, the assumed default? A vanilla Devoted game? One of the Black Vans variant genres? Something else entirely? What starting Standing/Threat Level were you considering?

maps and mapmaking. more specifically, there's something that's been bothering me for a while now. There are endless skirmish-scale settlement-scale and topographic-scale square grid mapmaking tools online, and that's great. There's plenty of topography-scale hexgrid mapmakers too, presumably because of D&D's ancient use of hexgrids for overland travel. and that's great too. There arent many hexmakers ive found for settlement scale maps, but i've had some luck torturing them out of the battletech mapmaker in the megamek software, or other videogames that generously offer to print the outputbutfor the life of me i cannot find a decent skirmish-scale hexgrid mapmaker. i must have tried a dozen programs by now, but the ones that offer hexgrids are either borderline unuseable or just put a hexagonal overlay over a square grid. it's ridiculous that after decades of computer tools for TTRPGS the best i've found is GIMP where i have to draw the damn things by hand. Not to mention the endless enshitification of google makes it harder and harder to find niche programs to match what i need.what are you anons using to create your maps?do you know of any decent skirmish-scale hexmappers (that are free, or at least worth the price)?what do you think of maps in general, do you even use them?i'll share any spare maps i have within the size limit to get the ball rolling

i kinda wanted to make a dungeoneering thread thats about discussing level design that falls under the purview of /tg/. like who here know what the 5 room dungeon is or jayquasing or a nestled dungeons. Also I like looking at old dungeon/map designs in classic video games. maybe talk about what makes them great or memorable be it the layout or the enemies or puzzles or set dressing I think it could be interesting. I'll start with something alot of people are familiar with but never give it its flowers just because the fights were meh (even though it has the best mini boss in all of zelda) but honestly I really liked exploring this place. solving the water puzzles and finding hidden rooms was cool maybe a lot less back tracking but still very cool.

Maybe I'm not following. Why not just use Inkarnate, slap a grid on, then paint in the lines with whatever you please like so (about 2 mins in inkarnate).

Previous thread: >>97111514GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.If you're wondering where to start:- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.Thread question: How often do you use an official GURPS setting? Which are your favorites?
Just had my first gurps game that wasn't dungeon fantasy. Using GURPS action rules but point value lowered to 150pts instead of 250, with challenges toned down in turn. We're using lots of cinematic and extra effort rules too.So far, it's been pretty fun, and it didn't devolve into just sitting in one cover and shooting. The firefight had grappling, jumping through windows, shootdiving like max payne, and stealth kills. Even had the opportunity to use some tactical shooting extreme conditions rules due to the fight taking place in the extreme north of greenland.Only thing I'm iffy about when comparing melee combat and ranged combat is that with guns, you do nothing but aim for the vitals or torso, there's no reason to aim anywhere else outside of trying to avoid DR.-7 for the head is not worth considering the multiplier is just +1, and hitting legs and arms does too little damage with pi and pi- pistols.

I'm not married myself, for the record, but I am employed and have had a pretty busy year and a half at work. >>97250767DC32 is the high save for a Level 12 spellcaster. Both the level and the stat advantage here was against them. Even if they were something like a Cleric, best you gonna get there is +18 to the save (and auto-crit success), so 60%. I don't any real detail on what the full encounter was and it is technically correct to put such a solo fight in the game (if still a dick move on the GM's part), so there's not much you can say there other than unlucky. Sometimes you just get outclassed and left with a problem that lasts outside the encounter. That's just how d20 fantasy is.Again, we can talk about how the stupefied condition can be tweaked or nerfed, but complaining about the raw math ain't really going to change anything here.
>>9725086440%, bleh, got the numbers backwards.
>>97250864If the DCs on higher level monsters and how casters fail way too much (most of the time) are things that have been complained about since forever, it's not a question of "luck". Overall the math is designed to rather consistently screw over players and specifically casters.
>>97251022I just don't really enjoy that offensive caster gameplay when fighting higher level enemies is to basically waste a turn and a spell fishing for a 30% chance that your spell will actually do something besides mildly debuff an enemy for 1 turn or do nothing at all if they crit succeed. But this is why our usual GM likes PF2 more than PF1. He likes designing very challenging encounters and the idea of a player caster turning the tide of a difficult fight doesn't sit well with him.
>>97251022The equivalent situation, of a 9th-Level Witch vs. a 12th-Level Spellcaster, would not be that different in 1e. Even worse, as all arcane casters take a -4 penalty to the saving throw against Feeblemind. In a charitable situation, where the boss have no buffs and only 21 DC, vs. a Witch with Heroism and not using an arcane list and a +4 to WIS, still would be about a 65% chance of saving and not becoming a walking onahole (assuming no Spell Resistance)?I don't think you are wrong about the math being slanted towards the GM and this punishes casters. But normally this discussion is about FIGHTING the boss, not being hit by them. Especially someone that is supposed to be hard. If you don't like the game being hard, then ask the GM to tune down the foes numbers, slap the Weak tag and call it a day. Again, that DC32 is the HIGH, not *STANDARD* DC for a Level 12 creature anyway, it would be DC29 if it was moderate. So this is all an atypical scenario that any real math criticism wouldn't help.>>97251150I respect that stance, though I can say that using an Incap spell when you have a distinct advantage like that is still a dick move. Least with no real heads up in the dungeon, that curses and the like that can fuck you over are all ready. It is fair to not like PF2e for catering to that thinking, but you can at least tell him to knock it off, there are better challenges than making the caster permanently retarded.

>>97251255id consider dropping the MHI for a cleric and putting the Mechanized armor on the LT instead. But its not bad as it imo
>>97250254LT needs a melee weapon, give him a bayonet (SMGs have bayonet lugs). As SMGs have shield combo you should give him a trench shield too. You will get shrapnel more than gas. If you can’t afford a mask and helmet for a model, drop the mask. Both shocktroopers should have frag grenades.remember that grenades award guaranteed blood markers against people without helmets. >>97251255No need for a sword for your LT when a bayonet is half the price. Your sniper priest seems pretty well kitted out but once again you could field 2 well kitted out yeomen for a few ducats more, and gain a lot of flexibility. Not taking armour on your expensive shocktroopers is an interesting decision. I’d be interested to know what you have planned for the engineer. Satchel charges aren’t that great and he’s fabulously expensive for a starter warband. Having a yeoman without a rifle and bayonet is similarly perplexing. Your shocktroopers (the ones you want to get into melee asap) already get Dash bonuses so sacrificing a rifle for a musical instrument may not be the best choice.Medikits are a sick joke in a game that rarely exceeds 4 turnsYour list has a lot of fancy shiny stuff where in the opening game or two you should be focusing on core basics. You have mobility, good assault and fantastic grenades, anything not playing to those strengths is diluting your opportunities.
>>97251469>>97251490Thanks for the advice, I'll get tweakingAs for the Combat Engineer, the plan is to use with the Lt to either smack something with armour or generate blood markers for the Lt to bloodbath in his activation. Same detail for the MHI and Sniper Priest, get the priest somewhere high and generate a blood markers for the big fuck-off Shotgun to delete a warwolf or equivalent armour.Good point about the Shocktroopers already having bonuses, I obviously need to actual read shit sometimes

>>97251548Shotguns are not what you want against armour and is your opponent is dumb enough to include a war wolf in his staring lineup, simply kite/ignore it while you kill his chaff (it’s still only one model and with less other models, the 50% break point will come faster if you focus on killing his weaker units). Early campaign you want volume of fire to maximise the chances of a lucky shot killing an enemy. TC is a campaign game so maxing out on troops will make you harder to break, and that will lead to more victories, which will lead to affording luxury units sooner.
