Hey there

I've decided to start a West Marches-style campaign on my LGS. It sounds the perfect style to run for a public setting w/ rotating players, but I myself have never DMed one

Any experiences, tips and advices regarding DM-ing/playing West Marches style games?

Or general tips for running games on LGS ?

For those unfamiliar with West Marches style, here is what google have to say about it:
>Player-Driven Exploration: Players decide where to go and what to explore, venturing into unknown territory from a safe starting town.
>Rotating Cast: A large pool of players participates, but different combinations of adventurers form parties for each session, preventing the need for a single regular group.
>Sandbox World: The world is a sandbox, with the map and plot emerging as players discover new locations and rumors, rather than being dictated by the GM.
>No Fixed Schedule: Sessions occur when players organize themselves, often on a voluntary basis.
>Low GM Prep: The Game Master (GM) focuses on creating a world and potential encounters, responding to player choices, rather than crafting complex plots.
>Self-Contained Sessions: Adventures are often designed to be resolved in a single session, with storylines evolving over time.

>I think you should abandon the idea and just start with the camp with some rumours
I'm leaning towards dropping it, because besides the arguments you made, I also try to remember myself TTRPG sessions are a scarce resource... and we never know how long a campaign is going to last. An introduction session out of a 50+ sessions campaign is fine, but out of a 4~6 sessions campaign is a bit waste of time. Especially given that the core concept is exploration, and that would effectively be 1 less session to explore

On the other hand, an upside would be that would be narratively fit and that would give players a more "guided" first session before letting them loose on the openness of the sandbox style

>give them very strong indicators that one direction likely has more shipwreck
Naturally. My idea for this would be that, since they took a longboat to escape the sinking ship, and the longboat is smaller/lighter, the waves carried it further away. Thus, if the main ship found land, it would be towards the direction they came (which is something I would point out upon any simple inquiry)

But then again, I might drop the idea entirely

>This feels a little strange to do. I could imagine a new player being put off
Yes, its unusual from the standard form of play, but I figured it could be healthy to introduce those early on since all those aspects are part of the West Marches style - players might not be on the same level, and not all people might meet. It would also push the discovery aspect further/faster. That would also put me around 10+ players right from the get-go

Having the 1 guy experience both groups was the way I found to tie the groups together - nevertheless, I'm still leaning heavily on having the first "official" session be the LGS one, so likely map discoveries from my test group (and perhaps even experience points) won't count during the test session. They could also all TPK, or simply not be that interested in keep playing

Having another parallel group can also lead to interesting things:
>More organic* rumors for players to investigate
>More eagerness to be the "first" to do things/discover places/etc
>The world would feel more alive/less centered on the players (again, a WM trademark)
At end of day, I feel like the concept of having a parallel group playing on the same world is in itself a different gimmick that can be tons of fun. To know there's more people out there experience that world, and that the things you do on your session affects the world even beyond your group

Though in my mind, the LGS group would be the "official" group, and I would probably limit my friends to a 1/month session, or 2 tops (LGS is scheduled to be every other week). I would also occasionally invite my friends to the LGS group to have more interconnection between the groups

But in the end of day, the aspect of having the LGS as the "official" group is important to me, which is why I might reset the map after the test session and start fresh for next week's first "official" session

Officially posted about the group on the LGS chat group for TTRPG, in less than 5 min we already got 5 players for first session :D

Hoping to keep the thread alive until then, or at least until tomorrow's test session

More card draw does help you not run out of gas when all your effects play from the hand, i.e. you aren't running much of the purple stuff, but if that's the case I don't think having all those bodies on the field does that much for you besides fueling Nyaaboot or EX11 Cendrillmon's -DP effects.

I also like how this can trigger your Emblem during an Overclock attack, but Nyaaboot and most of your 6s aren't designed to benefit from that unless you have a bunch of promo Arisas or, for some reason, ST6 Matts to gain enough memory to take back your turn and trigger a second Overclock.

I play lion, dragon and Xenos rampant with my 6-year old son. They are fun and simple wargames that allow me to use the models that I have and get a reasonably big game wrapped up in an hour or so without me having to leave the house. There is also less to memorize, as all rules for units are contained in the same volume, so there aren't really any "gotchas". However, these are not really tightly balanced games, but beer-and-pretzels affairs.
Another drawback is aesthetic, the game systems do not really support blocks of infantry and cavalry, the visual spectacle I expect from TOW. The playerbase is also tiny compared to TOW, which is a small game by GW standards.

the secret of the deathshroud is they're actually a bonkers shooting unit disguised as a melee unit. Assault means they 5 of them is shooting 10 templates per turn, wounding any toughness on 2+. If you hand his terminators 40-60 armor saves to roll, even if he passes on 2+ he's losing half his terminator squad.

They often did, in the past. With their empires being grander and bigger than whatever the humans have later. But these games do not happen during these times, instead way later after the downfall of the elves. Since humans always have to be the spoiled little protagonist-brats.

I've found from the grapevine that Jes Goodwin is soon to retire from Games Workshop

He really is the king. His concept sketches and absolutely timeless work on mk7 Space Marines and the Eldar particularly are worthy of the highest praise.

His influence will be sorely missed, though with how miniatures are often 3+ years in the pipeline before being seen on shelves, his legacy will continue.

Duelists are just normal cards that go in your deck, but once you play them, they stay on the field and can play something from your hyperspatial zone (extra deck that's always revealed) for free once per turn. They're basically MtG planeswalkers but instead of their abilities being printed on the card, the abilities are separate cards.
How good she is comes down to what cards she's allowed to play, which hasn't been revealed yet. We've seen the water and light Duelist so far, and they seem pretty good but not insane. But they're 2 cost, and this darkness one is 3 cost, so maybe she'll do something crazy.

If there's so much combat and you gain points even if you lose, is combat ever dramatic though, as it always is in TI?

It sounds like not much beyond combat. Is it similar to Kemet in that regard? Thats also constant warfare and upgrading your units. I know its deeper than that due to types of upgrades and so on, but still?

>>97357693
So would you say combat in TI is more tense and meaningful, while combat in Eclipse is smarter and more intricate?

What about exploration, is it fun in either game?

>>97357788
Mostly I'm just looking for interesting systems/customizability, and epic situations you'll talk about years later. The length of TI is a problem, but it seems like the more flavourful of the two games - 17 factions for example vs 6 in Eclipse (the expansions for eclipse are super expensive).
>>
>>97361001
>>97361316
My bad, I didnt see you replied, ignore that!

>>97361056
How would you compare it to TI:4, if you played that?

>>97361141
How exactly does explore work? Do you find planets to settle like in TI?

How many factions are actually in Eclipse? It seems like 6 alien factions, but you can also play as humans or something?
>>
>>97361141
>spade a spade
It's definitely optimisationmaxxing, but "euro" is not in my vernacular since I find the term a bit too fuzzy. Everything in Eclipse is so random that I have a hard time conceptualising it as a "euro", despite the management autism involved.

>>97361056
No clue what changed since 1E since I only started with 2E. There is definitely the aspect of potential defensive fleets, but in my games it's relatively rare and/or limited. Part of it is the fact that if you pass without building first, the reaction build is much less efficient so it will cost a fortune. Also, people tend to use up their resources proactively for both fleets and orbital spam, so there is seldom a lot of liquid resources floating around. If you have only one avenue of attack (no wormholes in the ass end of your base), it's usually safe to just build the ships for deterrence as well as the option to clear NPCs or attack someone else as needed rather than keep the resources pooled.

I did do this in my last game though, mounting a heroic defense against two pricks who decided to double penetrate me. So it's not a non-factor, but definitely somewhat rare in my games at least. We are dimwitted in general so YMMV.
>>
>>97361333
>How exactly does explore work? Do you find planets to settle like in TI?
I don't think TI4 even has exploration, unless an expansion added that.

In Eclipse, you start off with only your home base and the galactic center revealed. Everything else is revealed with explore actions and involves drawing+placing random hex tiles. There are 3 sectors:
1) 1 distance to galactic center. Highest risk of NPCs, best reawards on average.
2) 2 distance to galactic center. Medium risk, medium reward.
3) 3+ distance. Lowest risk, lowest reward.

When you explore a tile, if there are no NPCs, you get to expand there, colonise the planets (if any), and take a discovery tile. Otherwise you have to clear away NPC ships first before you can do the same. It's more costly, but NPC-protected systems ALWAYS have a discovery tile and USUALLY have better planets for colonisation.

It's great fun and kind of necessary to spice up the game, but it's the biggest source of variance in the game. Someone might draw absolute garbage systems one after another, while someone else gets a bunch of free real estate in turn 1. Likewise with discovery tiles, all of them are be useful to some degree, but some will propel you massively forward and some are situational at best.

So the games tend to have a couple of clear leaders just based on the initial explorations and there can be little counterplay to directly contest them for the majority of the game.

cont.

>factions
7 in the base game: 6 aliums with one generic hoo-man faction on the flipside of each alium. I would say they all have a pretty good niche in their playstyle which is based in the core concepts of the game. These are good at expanding, these are good at research, these are good at fighting, these are good at building type of thing.

I have 4 expansion races, and kind of similar to Dune's expansions, they are interesting but trend in a more weird direction that doesn't flow quite as naturally from the core design or have as strong an identity. Unlike Dune at least, all factions are not inherently interlinked or balanced around each other being present, so it doesn't really matter as long as you like it. Just a small observation.

I'm pretty sure my friend is being a cunt but thought I'd check the room.
For the past few years, I've been massively into Warmaster and have been trying to get my friend to play with me. I've printed him a full army, done a demo game and even invited him to a local league which he dropped out of last-minute and made me look bad.
He is a NEET with no job and spends all day every day doing nothing. I have a full time job and 3 kids. I am lucky to get a couple hours a week to paint.
Anyway, he recently decided that he did want to start playing after all, but has asked me to paint his army for him. This is a full fucking 2000pts army that I've already printed and organised for him, but now he apparently needs me to paint it as well because having 16 free hours a day is not enough to put down some fucking contrast paint.
I have plenty of other local players so I thought I was doing him a favour by introducing him to a new game.

Thank you for the answers, the benefits of throatslittas was indeed obvious and it's seems kind of strong on paper now
How is the match up of Kasrkins vs Kommandos ? I plan to play with my wife and want to let her play the most "OP" team of the two to avoid discouraging her early

Kasrkin are in a pretty rough position, I still consider them the weakest team in the game despite the latest buffs. Their strength is in having a lot of special weapons but they also lack reliable ways to ensure those weapons get to fire and fire at enemies that are valuable. They sort of lack a frontline.
Against kommandos they're actually unusually badly set up by my reconning. They die in melee without being able to really fight back, the ranged specialists that orks do have will just delete them, and their regular guns are too weak to really hurt orks while their special weapons are too valuable to trade. They also have no answer to throat slittas and even when they do get an important shot off they can still get blocked by a good just a scratch at times.
It says a lot about kasrkin that the biggest buff the team has received was the addition of the (currently very overpowered) martyrs tac op. Now when they die in droves trying to take the objective, they can at least get points for it.

also to add. orks seem to be quite the popular army under woman, because of the less serious and more relaxed fun nature of them.

I see, I will play the Kasrkin and try to beat the Kommandos then. Ultimately she wants to play the Raveners but we were advised to start with more straightforward teams. I want to play chaos legionnaires or the Blooded once I'm bored of the karkin

also orcs (commandos and wreckas) are usually named as the most fun to play teams if you are not solely focused on winning.
