Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

use a paper and pencil to prep your games like the lord intended
>>
>>97256278
The lord intended us to make and use tools as we see fit.
Pregenerating characters and putting them on character sheets or printing them out so players can have them to keep is zoz.
>>
>>97256278
I like using generators to whip up quick NPCs when the players encounter a wandering party or what have you. Beyond that, rolling characters is fast and fun. I sometimes fill out character sheets to stick in my portable books just for lulz.

It was written for two sessions. The groups who did best in the upper caves were allowed to go on to the second round in the lower caves (if I recall the division correctly).

Most of my bits are 40K castoffs, window-screen patches for mesh, and chopped up sprues, backpacks and so-forth. >>97250047 specifically was a tank model I bought from a hobby store and just...half-built before slapping the car on top of it. It’s a fuckin blast, love playing this shit with the lads. Before this game we were strictly into Gloomhaven, House on the Hill, or D&D. Now Gaslands has totally taken over the rotation.

Gripping a random Hotwheels for $1 and totally destroying it for one night of dice rolling fun with the boys is shockingly satisfying. I don’t even paint my cars, I just kick em around the Meijer parking lot and call em ready. But my buddy is a massive talent with these, pic related, it’s Piss Drinker Pete’s war rig (we have a whole story campaign going on now)

Does Slime combo out as easily as it looks?
2 performance cars loaded up for it (fenderkiss, rear drive, side rams) can bounce off each other quite a few times. Not infinite, but you'll go further than anybody else can, even with shenanigans

Energy was one of the most hated Magic mechanics ever because it's just uninteractable goodstuff stapled onto cards. Why'd they just bring it back? How can this not be seen as a clear insult?
>>
>>97256972
Because we need to energize our shields or else the Borg Cube will blow right through us.
>>
>>97256972
>goodstuff stapled onto cards
I don't think you understand what these words mean
>>
>>97256972
Energy cards are the OPPOSITE of goodstuff you retard. That's the problem with them. Goodstuff means "generically good" like cards with draw or ramp stapled onto them. Energy meanwhile gives you counters that do literally nothing unless you use other energy cards. It's a mechanic that's too synergy-focused, which is the opposite of what goodstuff means.

...was also the first third-party one, with its first product released in 1976. Judges Guild's Wilderlands of High Fantasy is the only setting you'll ever need.
>18 hexmaps at 5-mile hex size, with a cool thing (ruin/relic, castle/keep, town, or monster lair) every 5th or 6th hex
>Covering an area the size of the Mediterranean Sea
>Crazy shit all over like a Balor running a town
>Huge aesthetic variety, lots of different flavor and creature types
>Home of the iconic City-State of the Invincible Overlord, a wonderfully dysfunctional city
>There is exactly ONE nation-state in the setting, and it's the size of Belgium. Everything else is city-states and fortified towns
>Life is grimdark as shit for regular people, think Bronze Age Collapse tier. Child mortality is high as shit, only the lucky strong or brilliant make it to the ripe old age of 35.
>No ancient conspiracies or secret societies puppeteering from the shadows--geopolitics are very primitive
>Tech is schizophrenic, with some towns having just invented the wheel to and some cities having discovered calculus
>But despite all that, you can make a real difference with your friends! Kill the asshole Overlord and see if you can do a better job.
WoHF is written for old-school D&D but easily adaptable to other editions. Necromancer Games updated the content to 3.5 in splendid style with their releases of it.

On the spectrum of rubber forehead aliens to complete starfish aliens that are made out of silica and breathe methane, where are YOU specificially comfortable with. Does there come a point where an alien becomes too weird for you to "relate" to in order to include them in your games as playable races?

Personally I am fond of aliens that look plausibly like they could have evolved in a different world and have no distinguishable lineage to earth life, even if they share some superficial features.

Transhuman diaspora is definitely the best take on SW/Trek rubber foreheads imo if you're too autistic to stomach it otherwise. It's nice when baselines from completely distinct evolutionary histories bump into each other and find they have more in common than ever more derived "cousins" (To'ul'h = best bros).

In my settings, all Oxygen breathing life forms are related, having been seeded by an Overgod figure. She also left behind spiritual organisms as well, which would evolve into Gods. Based upon whatever pattern they take, life begins to evolve destined to one day reach that pattern during ages of Sapience.

So all the worlds with life + oxygen atmospheres share a great deal in common. Several races are bipedal and humanoid, with limbs, eyes and mouths where you would expect them to be on a human. Their DNA would line up with life on Earth. There are monstrous races as well, but you can see parallels with Earth life in their design, however gruesome or cool that might be.

Being able to fuck an alien is an integral part of science fiction, from its very beginnings. It has always been with us, and it always will. A setting should always have at least one alien race that is sexually desirable. Sci-fi that deliberately tries to completely exclude fuckability is poor, tryhard, no-fun-allowed, and reminds me of the Virgin vs. Chad meme, where the Chad is having a blast creating hot aliens, and the Virgin is researching Tardigrades and Stygiomedusa.

You should ALWAYS cheese every encounter. If you EVER end up in a situation that even remotely resembles a fair fight, just run away and wait until you can rig the situation to your favor.

Use your fucking brain. Even if it is highly improbable for you to lose a given fight, statistically speaking, you'll still eventually croak if you keep taking those bets. Don't leave it up to chance. It's easier than you might think, you just need to use your noggin. It's not a video game. You can do whatever the fuck you want.

Just the other night my party ran into a melee monster in a narrow ass room that they for some reason decided to ram their dicks into until someone died. When I suggested that we retreat for a bit and lure it into the room with the big ass statues so we can all just climb them and shoot it to death, they looked at me like I just escaped from the looney bin. They all died of course.
